Submersible pump comparison 2026

The best Submersible pumps, compared.

Top pick: 300W pond feature pump Best value: Einhell GC-DP 3325 – About £37.97 with 4.4 from 1,050 reviews, 25 mm solids and adapters in the box. Strongest star line among the entry-priced mains dirty-water pumps once the top pick is set aside. The 120 V line is flagged, not corrected. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A submersible pump sits in the water and pushes it out through a hose. In a UK garden you use one to empty a pond, a pool, a hot tub, a water butt or a flooded cellar. A surface pump has to suck from above, so it is a different tool. You match it to the water, not to a watt figure alone. Dirty water needs a stated solids size. Clean-water and flat-suction pumps leave less behind and block sooner in mud. Delivery head has to cover the real lift and hose friction. A listed maximum flow is the figure at zero head, not the flow at the top of a rise. The float has to fit the pit, with room for the tether, so it does not dry-run or stop too early. Cable length, adapters, and a hose in the box decide if it runs on the day it arrives. Mains models need 230 V, a BS 1363 plug, and an RCD of not more than 30 mA. Those checks are in the [submersible pump buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/submersible-pump/sub/submersible-pump-buying-guide).

The best Submersible pumps in detail

300W pond feature pump

Rank 1

300W pond feature pump

∼£150

Our view

This 300 W listing is sold as a pond water-feature pump with fountain nozzles at about £149.99, claiming 11,000 L/h on 230 V. The head table says 2.5 m while a bullet also states 3.5 m — both are left as printed. The listing presents it for circulation and waterfalls, not dirty-water drainage or sump emptying, and the box claims include a filter and three fountain options rather than a float-switch drain kit. The amazon.co.uk line is 5.0 from a single review, which is not enough to aggregate themes. At this price it is the dearest row in the set for a different job. Choose it only if you want a feature pump with nozzles — not if you came here to empty a flooded cellar or drain a pond for cleaning.

Pros

  • 230 V pond-feature pump with claimed fountain nozzles
  • 11,000 L/h circulation claim and dry-run shut-off claimed
  • Adapters for G 1-1/2 stated on the bullets

Cons

  • Not a dirty-water drainage or sump pump
  • Only one review — score held down
  • Head figure conflicts between table (2.5 m) and bullet (3.5 m); about £149.99 for the wrong job if you need drainage

Best for: A decorative pond fountain or waterfall circulation setup with nozzles

Less suitable: Pond cleanouts, hot-tub empties, flooded cellars, or any job that needs a float-switch drainage pump

Common questions

Is this a dirty-water drainage pump?

No. The listing presents it as a pond water-feature pump with fountain nozzles, not a sump or drainage pump.

What head does the listing print?

The technical table says 2.5 metres. A bullet also states 3.5 metres. Both figures are left as listed.

What comes in the box according to the bullets?

Pump, filter and three fountain options are claimed. An exact packed-parts list beyond that is n/a.

FOTING 550W 17000 L/h

Rank 2

FOTING 550W 17000 L/h

∼£43

Our view

The FOTING 550 W listing is about £42.99 and claims 17,000 L/h, 9 m head and residual water as low as 1 mm, with a 10 m cable and IPX8 on the bullets. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.8 from only 25 reviews, so the stars are not a settled sample next to the thousand-plus drainage rows. UK reviewers praise drain rate and the long cable, and say you clip the float cord into handle slots to change cut-in depth, though instructions and diagrams are called confusing. Solids size claims conflict between the manual and the web copy in at least one UK note, so treat particle handling as unclear. A hose is not included. It fits a mid-flow dirty/clean empty when you will learn the float clips — not when you need a thick review trail or a stated solids millimetre you can trust.

Pros

  • 17,000 L/h and 9 m head claimed with a 10 m cable
  • 1 mm residual claim when the float is set low
  • UK reviews report a UK plug despite some US-style photos

Cons

  • Only 25 reviews — thin evidence
  • Confusing instructions and float learning curve
  • Solids passage unclear (manual vs web conflict); hose not included

Best for: A mid-size pool or ditch empty if you accept a small review file and will set the float clips carefully

Less suitable: Buyers who need a clear solids millimetre, a thick UK complaint file, or a hose in the box

Common questions

Does this listing ship with a UK plug?

A UK review says the unit arrived with a UK plug, even when the photo shows a US-style plug.

How do you set the float height?

UK reviewers say you clip the float cord into slots on the handle to change the cut-in depth. The printed instructions are criticised as confusing.

How low can it drain according to the bullets?

The lower-depth bullet claims residual water as low as 1 mm. The float still needs enough depth to stay on unless you lock it for manual running.

Einhell GC-DP 3325

Rank 3

Einhell GC-DP 3325

∼£38

Our view

The Einhell GC-DP 3325 is a 330 W dirty-water pump at about £37.97, listed at 9,500 L/h and 6 m head with solids up to 25 mm. On amazon.co.uk it carries 4.4 from 1,050 reviews, and UK buyers repeatedly empty hot tubs and ponds quickly with a compact body and an adjustable float for tight pits. The box includes a 90° elbow and a universal adapter, but not a full discharge hose. Reviewers also say the float holder can feel flimsy, stick, or need readjusting, and that silt in dug pits can block the intake because there is no filter. A technical line prints 120 V, which conflicts with typical UK 230 V mains — check the plate before you rely on a garden socket. It is the best value here for occasional dirty-water drainage when adapters matter more than maximum claimed litres.

Pros

  • 4.4 from 1,050 reviews at an entry shelf price
  • Adjustable float for auto or manual use
  • Elbow and universal hose adapters in the box
  • 25 mm solids claim for pond and hot-tub debris

Cons

  • Float holder can feel flimsy or stick
  • No hose and no intake filter for muddy pits
  • Listing voltage line shows 120 V — verify the plate

Best for: Occasional pond, hot-tub or cellar empties on a budget when you will buy hose separately

Less suitable: High-head lifts beyond the 6 m claim, silt-heavy excavations without a pre-filter, or buyers who need a confirmed 230 V plate sight-unseen

Common questions

How large a particle does the GC-DP 3325 listing allow?

The item highlight says foreign objects up to 25 mm for the GC-DP 3325.

Does the price include a discharge hose?

No. The product data lists the pump, a 90° elbow and a universal adapter. Reviewers buy hose separately.

What voltage does this amazon.co.uk listing state?

The technical line prints 120 volts. That conflicts with typical UK 230 V mains, so check the plate before you rely on it.

FOTING 900W 28000 L/h

Rank 4

FOTING 900W 28000 L/h

∼£57

Our view

The FOTING 900 W high-flow listing sits at about £56.99 on amazon.co.uk and claims 28,000 L/h with an 11 m head, solids to 3.8 cm and residual water down to 3.8 cm. Across 80 reviews the line is 4.4; the UK sample praises large volume once a hose and clips are sorted, and notes that a hose is not in the box. Auto mode is said to cut in around 17.5 cm of water, with a 10 m cable and multi-size adapters on the bullets. Related listings warn about dry-running if the float is misunderstood, so continuous mode still needs watching. At 7.51 kg it is a heavier garden drain pump than the entry Einhell. It suits a deep pond or ditch empty when you already own discharge hose — not a wipe-dry floor job or a buy that ships ready to run.

Pros

  • 28,000 L/h and 11 m head claimed for large empties
  • Solids to 3.8 cm with float switch and 10 m cable
  • Adapters for 33 mm, 1 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 26 mm listed

Cons

  • Hose not included — buy pipe and clips separately
  • Only 80 reviews; thinner UK sample than the high-volume FOTING and KATSU rows
  • Residual claim of 3.8 cm still leaves water to finish by hand

Best for: A deep pond, ditch or basement empty where you already have hose and want the highest claimed flow in this set

Less suitable: Near-dry floors, first-time buyers without hose, or anyone treating the thin review file as settled proof

Common questions

Does this FOTING listing include a hose?

No. The included-components line names the sump pump. A UK review says to order hoses or pipes and circlips separately.

What solids size does the listing claim?

Up to 3.8 cm solids, with residual water down to 3.8 cm, on the product bullets.

How long is the power cable?

The easy-to-use bullet states a 10 m power cord and multi-hose adapters for 33 mm, 1 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 26 mm.

URUN 18 V cordless

Rank 5

URUN 18 V cordless

∼£26

Our view

The URUN cordless body is about £25.99 without a battery and claims compatibility with named Einhell Power X-Change 18 V packs, at about 30 L/min (1,800 L/h) and 15 ft of lift (about 4.6 m) with a 120 W class motor. That flow is far below the multi-thousand L/h mains drainage pumps in this comparison. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.4 from 11 reviews; the thin UK sample includes early failure after only a few uses. The product note says the pump must stay immersed and must never run idle. The model string prints 12 V while the title sells 18 V compatibility — both are left as listed. It suits a small camping or kiddie-pool transfer away from a socket if you already own a matching battery — not a flood, pond cleanout or cellar empty.

Pros

  • Cordless convenience when an Einhell 18 V battery is already owned
  • Low shelf price for the pump body alone
  • Small garden and camping transfer jobs named on the listing

Cons

  • Battery not included; only 11 reviews
  • 30 L/min — not a flood or large-pond pump
  • UK note of early failure after a few uses; must stay immersed

Best for: Tiny cordless water moves (camping, kiddie pool, gutter bucket) with an existing Einhell 18 V battery

Less suitable: Flooded cellars, seasonal pond empties, or anyone treating it as a mains dirty-water substitute

The product note says the pump must never idle and must always be immersed in water.

How does the flow compare with mains drainage pumps in this set?

The listing prints 30 litres per minute (1,800 L/h), which is far below the multi-thousand L/h mains drainage pumps here.

KATSU 400W 7500 L/h

Rank 6

KATSU 400W 7500 L/h

∼£37

Our view

The KATSU 400 W portable submersible is about £36.99 and claims 7,500 L/h, 5 m head and solids up to 35 mm on 230 V. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.3 from 2,739 reviews — the largest count in this set — and UK buyers use it for ponds, pits and water-butt transfers when the hose run is managed. The product data does not list a hose in the box, and reviews that add lay-flat hose report heavy kinking over rises, which kills flow until the run is straightened. Cable length is blank in the extract. At 3.8 kg it is lighter than the 900 W FOTING units. It suits temporary dirty-water transfer on a tight budget when you already own hose — not a high-head lift beyond 5 m or a kit that ships ready to attach.

Pros

  • 4.3 from 2,739 reviews — thickest count in the set
  • 35 mm solids and 230 V at an entry price
  • Praised for pond and temporary transfer jobs

Cons

  • Hose not listed in the box
  • Lay-flat hose kinks badly over rises in UK use notes
  • Maximum head only 5 m on the listing

Best for: Budget dirty-water pond or pit transfer when you already have hose and the lift stays modest

Less suitable: High patio rises, hose-in-box shoppers, or jobs that need more than 5 m of claimed head

Pools, ponds, pits, sumps, ditches and footings, plus hot-tub and construction uses on the usage line.

FOTING 900W 14000 L/h

Rank 7

FOTING 900W 14000 L/h

∼£47

Our view

The FOTING 900 W drainage listing at about £46.99 claims 14,000 L/h, 8.5 m head and solids up to 35 mm, with residual water down to 3 cm and a 10 m cable. Across 2,607 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.2 — the thickest mains dirty-water file among the high-flow FOTING rows here — and UK buyers often empty hot tubs and ponds quickly with a unit that feels heavy and robust. Hose is not included; reviewers buy lay-flat pipe separately, including 32 mm runs around 10 m. The float switch is a recurring complaint: it can cut out early or need holding upright, so many people switch to manual mode for a full pool empty. Some returns mention cracked casings on arrival, and low pressure over slight rises with sticky hose appears in the sample. It is the top pick in this set for review-backed dirty-water drainage when you will buy hose and manage the float — not a wipe-dry or set-and-forget cellar pump.

Pros

  • Largest high-volume dirty-water review file in this FOTING band (4.2 from 2,607)
  • 35 mm solids, 8.5 m head claim and 10 m cable
  • Fast hot-tub and pond empties in UK reviews
  • 230 V clearly stated on the listing

Cons

  • Hose not included
  • Float cuts out early or needs holding upright
  • Cracked casing on arrival and early stop after short runs in some reviews

Best for: Seasonal pond, pool or hot-tub drainage when you want a thick UK review trail and will fit your own hose

Less suitable: Near-dry floors, unattended pits with a defeated float, or buyers who refuse to order hose separately

The durable bullet says the base filter allows solids up to 35 mm and residual water down to 3 cm.

Does the float cut out early?

Several UK reviews say the float needs to stay upright and can stop the pump while water remains. Manual mode is used for pool empties.

KATSU 400W with 10 m hose

Rank 8

KATSU 400W with 10 m hose

∼£49

Our view

This KATSU 400 W kit at about £48.98 adds a claimed 10 m PVC hose of 25 mm diameter and a quick coupler with clips, with 8,000 L/h, 5 m head and 35 mm solids on 230 V. Across 860 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.2; UK buyers like the ready-to-run pond drain and easy setup. The same sample says the blue hose creases flat on bends and stops flow until straightened, and that shallow water needs the float suspended or cable-tied for continuous running. The listing states a 5 cm minimum depth and says it is not suitable for a complete hot-tub drain without manual finishing. Instructions are called useless by several reviewers. It is the hose-included pick when you accept kink management — not a wipe-dry hot-tub empty.

Pros

  • 10 m PVC hose and coupler in the box
  • 35 mm solids and automatic float switch
  • Fast pond drains praised when the hose run is straight

Cons

  • Supplied hose creases flat on bends
  • Weak flow in shallow water; float needs rigging
  • Not for complete hot-tub drain (5 cm minimum depth note)

Best for: A pond or pit empty when you want hose in the box and will keep the run unkinked

Less suitable: Complete hot-tub wipe-downs, tangled hose routes, or buyers who need clear manuals

Can it empty a hot tub completely?

The listing note says a minimum water depth of 5 cm is required and it is not suitable for complete hot-tub drainage without manual finishing.

Do reviewers like the supplied hose?

Several UK reviews say the blue hose creases flat on bends, which stops flow until the run is straightened.

How we compared

Eight amazon.co.uk listings are on this page. The 21 October 2026 score uses stars up to 45, review count up to 25, drainage fit up to 18, and cable or hose up to 8. Penalties then apply for a thin sample, a single review, a voltage conflict, early failure, or a kit hose that kinks. Price sits outside the score. A 5.0 from one review is not treated as stronger evidence than a lower star line from thousands. There is no laboratory test. The weights below are those four positive shares rounded so they add to 100. They are not a second score. The top pick is the FOTING 900W 14000 L/h, score 86. The best value is the Einhell GC-DP 3325, score 80.

1

Stars

47%

Up to 45 points from the amazon.co.uk star line: the rating divided by 5, then multiplied by 45, rounded to a whole number. The weight here is that share rounded so the four weights add to 100.

2

Review count

26%

Up to 25 points from review volume: 8 times the log of the review count plus one, capped at 25. A single five-star review does not outrank a large sample.

3

Drainage fit

19%

Up to 18 points when the listing is dirty or clean drainage with a solids figure. Residual water without a solids size scores lower. A cordless transfer and a pond-feature pump score lower still, because they are not drainage medals.

4

Cable and hose

8%

Up to 8 points for a hose in the box, a listed cable of 10 m or more, or adapters only. A kink on the supplied hose is a penalty, not part of this weight.

Submersible pump buying guide

A submersible pump is the usual tool when the water is already around the pump: a pond, a pool, a hot tub, a water butt or a flooded cellar. Match solids, head, residual water and the float before you compare watts. Outdoor mains need a BS 1363 plug and an RCD. A fountain kit and a cordless transfer pump are in the table so you can see they are different jobs.

What is a submersible pump?

A submersible pump sits in the water and pushes it out through a hose. That is why it is the usual tool for emptying a pond, pool, hot tub, water butt or flooded cellar. A surface garden pump has to suck. A deep-well borehole pump, a fuel transfer pump, or a tiny aquarium circulator is a different product. Quality is not a watt figure on its own. Start with the water you actually have.

Best for

  • Homeowners emptying a pond, pool or hot tub a few times a year
  • A portable dirty-water pump for an occasional cellar, garage or garden flood
  • Pond keepers who need a drainage pump for maintenance, separate from a filter pump

Not ideal for

  • A deep-well borehole, fuel transfer, or a tiny aquarium circulator
  • Sewage or foul water beyond a domestic dirty-water kit
  • A permanent outdoor socket, buried supply, or recurring structural flooding

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying clean water for a muddy pit

A clean-water or flat-suction intake blocks sooner in grit. Dirty water needs a stated solids size. A fountain pump is a third mistake: it circulates, it does not drain a pond for cleaning.

  2. 2

    Trusting maximum litres per hour

The maximum flow on a listing is at zero head. A rise and a bent hose take flow away. Read the delivery head against the real lift before you treat the largest number as the result.

  3. 3

A snagged float, a dry run, or the wrong lead

The float needs room, or it stops early or the pump runs dry. Lock it only when you mean to run manually, and keep the pump immersed. Use an outdoor RCD socket, not an indoor extension lead.

What to weigh up

Water type, solids and residual water

High

The first check is the water you have, not the watt figure. Dirty-water drainage pumps are for grit and debris. On portable home models the passage is often around 20–35 mm, which is the match for a pond, a flooded basement or an excavation. Clean-water and flat-suction pumps use a finer intake. They can leave less water on a floor, and they block sooner in mud. A dual body switches between a dirty mode and a residual around 1 mm.

Head, float, hose and outdoor electrics

High

Delivery head has to cover the real lift and the friction in a hose that rises and bends. The maximum litres per hour on a listing is the figure at zero head, so it is not the flow you will see at the top of a rise. Read the two numbers separately. The float switch needs an auto or manual mode, enough tether space, and a low-level lock. If it snags, the pump dry-runs or stops while water remains.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Pond, pool or hot tub a few times a year

You empty a pond, pool or hot tub a few times a year and you will buy hose yourself. The FOTING 900W 14000 L/h is the top pick at about £46.99, with 35 mm solids, an 8.5 m head claim, a 10 m cable and 4.2 from 2,607 amazon.co.uk reviews. The float can cut out early, so many people switch to manual mode for a full empty.

An occasional cellar or garage flood

You want a portable dirty-water pump for an occasional cellar, garage or garden flood, and adapters matter more than the highest claimed flow. The Einhell GC-DP 3325 is the best value at about £37.97, with 25 mm solids, an adjustable float and 4.4 from 1,050 reviews. The listing prints 120 V, so check the plate before you rely on a 230 V socket. Hose is not in the box.

A pond cleanout, not a fountain

You keep a pond and need a drainage pump for maintenance, separate from a permanent filter pump. The KATSU 400W with 10 m hose is about £48.98 and includes a 25 mm hose and coupler. UK reviews say that hose creases flat on bends. The 300 W row in this set is a fountain kit, so skip it if the job is to empty the pond.

Common questions about Submersible pumps

Which submersible pump is the top pick in this set?
The top pick is the FOTING 900W 14000 L/h at about £46.99. The score is 86, from amazon.co.uk stars, review volume, drainage fit and the kit, not a laboratory test. The listing shows 4.2 from 2,607 reviews, solids to 35 mm, an 8.5 m head claim and a 10 m cable. The hose is not included, and UK reviews say the float can cut out early. The best value is the Einhell GC-DP 3325 at about £37.97.
How much does a submersible pump cost on amazon.co.uk?
Portable dirty-water pumps for home use commonly sit around £35–£60 on amazon.co.uk. That band is a rule of thumb from current listings, not a lab ranking. In this set the cordless body is about £25.99 without a battery, and the 400 W kit with hose is about £48.98. The mid dirty-water rows are about £46.99 and about £56.99. The pond-feature listing is about £149.99, and it is a fountain pump, not a drain pump.
What should you check before you buy a submersible pump?
Match the water first: dirty, clean, or a dual body, and read the solids size if the pit is muddy. Then read delivery head against the real lift, because a maximum litres-per-hour figure is at zero head. Check residual water if you need a near-dry finish. Check the float, the cable, and whether a hose is in the box. On mains, look for 230 V, a BS 1363 plug and an RCD on the outdoor socket.
Should you buy a dirty-water or a clean-water submersible pump?
Dirty-water models are for grit and debris, often with a solids passage around 20–35 mm, which suits a pond, a flooded basement or an excavation. Clean-water and flat-suction models have a finer intake, get closer to a dry floor, and block sooner in mud. A dual body can switch modes. Buying a clean-water pump for a muddy pit is a common mistake. A fountain pump is a third job: circulation, not drainage. The trade-off is in the dirty water and clean water guide.
Do you need an RCD for a submersible pump outdoors?
Yes for outdoor mains use. Electrical Safety First advises RCD protection for garden tools and pumps, and a regular test. HSE describes an RCD of not more than 30 mA as the usual secondary protection against shock. The pump should be a household or garden kit under BS EN IEC 60335-2-41, with a BS 1363 plug. A listing that prints 120 V conflicts with typical UK 230 V mains, so check the plate. Do not use an indoor extension lead outdoors.
When should you call a professional instead of using a submersible pump?
Call a professional for a permanent outdoor socket or a buried SWA supply, for recurring structural flooding, and for sewage beyond a domestic dirty-water kit. A damaged cable, or RCD trips you cannot explain, is the same stop. A surface pump that sucks from above is a different tool, covered in the garden pump comparison. In England, taking more than 20 cubic metres a day from a pond or river can need an Environment Agency licence.
Is a pond fountain pump the same as a drainage submersible pump?
No. A pond feature pump is for circulation, fountains and waterfalls. In this set that row claims fountain nozzles and prints a head of 2.5 m in the table and 3.5 m in a bullet. Both figures are left as listed. It has one amazon.co.uk review, so the 5.0 star line is not a drainage result. If you are emptying a pond for cleaning, you want a dirty-water drainage pump with a float switch, not a feature kit.

Our verdict

The top pick is the FOTING 900W 14000 L/h at about £46.99. The score is 86, from 4.2 and 2,607 amazon.co.uk reviews, a 35 mm solids claim, an 8.5 m head and a 10 m cable. The hose is not in the box, and the float can cut out early. The best value is the Einhell GC-DP 3325 at about £37.97, score 80, with 4.4 from 1,050 reviews, 25 mm solids and adapters in the box. Its technical line prints 120 V, so check the plate against 230 V mains. Price sits outside the score, and this is not a laboratory test.
