How to choose a submersible pump in the UK

Updated: 23 October 2026

If you need to know how to choose a submersible pump in the UK, start with the water and the real lift, not the watt figure on the title. You have standing water in a pond, hot tub, water butt or flooded garage, and the pump has to sit in the water. Listings still shout litres per hour as if that number alone picks the tool. This page walks water type, residual depth, the float, the hose and outdoor electrics for garden drainage, not borehole wells or fountain ornaments. Match models on the [submersible pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/submersible-pump). A purchase through our links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the water, not the watts

Match the muck before you match the motor. Dirty-water pumps claim a free-passage solids size, often around 20–35 mm, so grit, leaves and pond sludge can pass. Clean-water and flat-suction designs use a finer intake. They drain closer to dry, and they block sooner in mud. A fountain pump circulates. A cordless 18 V body is a small transfer, not a flood substitute. Ask what enters the intake on the worst day. Hair and light debris on a hot-tub empty sit near dirty water. Silt needs the solids figure, not a fountain kit. A puddle you want almost dry points to flat suction or dual mode, if the water is relatively clean. The fuller split is in dirty water vs clean water.

Delivery head and why the hose steals flow

Delivery head is the vertical lift the pump can push against, usually a maximum. Listing flow is almost always quoted near zero head. As the hose rises over a step, a butt rim or a basement window, flow falls. A long run, tight bends and a kinked lay-flat hose steal more. A claim of 14,000 L/h and 8.5 m head is two separate maxima, not one point you will see together. Measure the rise from the water to the highest hose point, then allow for friction. Pumps in this band often claim about 5–11 m of head. A two-metre rise with a 10 m hose and sharp bends makes the printed litres per hour optimistic, not a stopwatch promise.

Residual water, the float and what is in the box

Residual height decides whether you finish with a mop, a wet-vac or a bucket. Dirty-water bases often leave a few centimetres. Flat suction and some dual modes claim about a millimetre, if the float allows continuous running. A float also stops the pump while water remains unless you lock it. Auto mode suits an unattended pit with swing space. Continuous mode is a watched mode for a full empty. Many listings ship the pump and adapters only. Hose, clips and a longer lead are separate. A 10 m kit hose saves an order, though some lay-flat runs crease shut on bends. Cables around 10 m are common, and adapters for 25–33 mm and G1 or G1-1/2 appear often. The first run sits on how to use a submersible pump.

Power, RCD and when to walk away

UK garden pumps are 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. Electrical Safety First advises RCD protection for garden tools and pumps. HSE frames secondary protection around an RCD of not more than 30 mA. Use an outdoor-rated lead, not an indoor extension across wet paving. Household pump safety sits under BS EN IEC 60335-2-41. If a table prints 120 V, check the plate. Walk away from a deep-well pump, buried foul sewage, or an aquarium circulator. In England, taking more than 20 cubic metres a day from a river or pond can need an Environment Agency licence. A flooded garage into a drain is a different job. Recurring structural flooding, sewage beyond a domestic dirty-water kit, or unexplained RCD trips belong with a professional. Prices on the listings move.

Common questions

Dirty or clean water pump for my job?
Choose dirty water when grit, leaves or sludge will pass the intake. Garden drainage listings often claim solids around 25–35 mm. Choose clean water or flat suction when the water is relatively clear and you need a near-dry finish. Dual bases cover both if you will switch modes. A fountain pump circulates. It is not a drainage answer.
What delivery head do I need?
Measure the vertical rise from the water to the highest hose point, then allow for hose length and bends. Listing head is a maximum, not a guarantee at full flow. If the rise approaches the printed maximum, expect a slow trickle. A higher-head model or a shorter discharge path is the next check.
Do I need a float switch?
A float switch is useful for automatic cut-out and dry-run protection in a pit with room for the float to swing. For a full empty below the auto cut-in depth, you need a continuous or manual lock, and you must watch the pump so it does not run dry. Auto mode and a full empty are different jobs.
What residual water height is acceptable?
A few centimetres is normal for many dirty-water bases, and it is fine if you will mop or wet-vac the last pool. Millimetre residual claims matter for floors and liners you want almost dry, provided the water stays clean enough for that intake. The float still has to allow the pump to run that low.
Should the hose be in the box?
A hose-in-box kit is convenient for a first drain. Many drainage pumps still ship without hose. Budget for the correct diameter, clips and an unkinked route either way. A hose that creases shut does not give you free flow, even when it arrived in the same carton as the pump.
