How to use a submersible pump float switch

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have unboxed a portable dirty-water or clean-water pump, the hose is still coiled, and the float looks like a dangling afterthought. That float is the on/off control that either saves the motor or cuts power while half a pond remains. This page is how to use a submersible pump float switch for UK garden setup: placement, hose path, float modes, outdoor RCD power and shutdown. Ranking stays on the [best submersible dirty water pump](/hub/garden-watering/submersible-pump/sub/submersible-pump-best) page. If you still need a model, start from the [submersible pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/submersible-pump). A purchase through our links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Place the pump and fit the hose

Put the pump at the deepest water you can reach, intake clear of soft silt when you can. A slab under a dirty-water base cuts sludge into the grill. Keep the cable and float free. Do not trap the float under the hose. Fit adapters that match the hose. Many listings include 25–33 mm and G1 or G1-1/2. Run the hose to a drain, lawn soakaway or tank with few sharp bends. Lay-flat PVC often creases shut on rises, which looks like a weak pump until you straighten it. Support the hose over rims and steps. If the box has no hose, buy diameter and clips before the wet test. Aim the outlet where the water may go. Do not assume a storm drain will take oily hot-tub water or slurry.

Float switch: auto, clip height and continuous mode

In automatic mode the float rises to switch the pump on and drops to switch it off. That limits dry running, and it stops the motor while water remains if cut-out sits above the intake. UK notes on FOTING drainage pumps say the float must stay upright or it cuts out early. Clip slots, or an adjustable holder as on the Einhell, change the height. Give the float room to swing. Continuous or manual mode locks the float for a full pool or hot-tub empty. Stay with it and shut down before the intake sucks air. It is a watched mode, not a set-and-forget cellar system. Never leave a defeated float on an empty sump. If you need drier than the base can reach, finish by hand or with a wet-vac. Water type is in dirty water vs clean water.

Power, RCD and the first run

Power only through a tested outdoor RCD. Electrical Safety First treats garden pumps as outdoor kit behind RCD protection. HSE frames secondary protection around an RCD of not more than 30 mA. Use an outdoor-rated lead and a BS 1363 plug on 230 V. Do not trail an indoor extension across wet paving. If the photo shows a foreign plug, or the table prints 120 V, check the plate first. Watch the first cycle. Water should leave the hose, and the float should swing without the motor surging every few seconds. A kink is the usual weak-flow false alarm. Straighten the run before you blame the impeller. Hot plastic, repeated unexplained trips, or a damaged cable are stop conditions. Pond and hot-tub prep is on emptying a pond or pool.

Shutdown, rinsing and when to call a professional

Power off at the RCD, lift by the handle, and rinse grit from the intake and float hinge. Drain the hose so it does not freeze in storage. Coil the cable loosely and store the pump dry. A portable pump is for episodic empties, not a buried foul-water install. Call an electrician for a permanent outdoor socket or a buried SWA supply. Call a drainage professional for recurring structural flooding, sewage beyond domestic dirty-water solids, or cable damage you cannot explain. If the pump trips a known-good outdoor RCD every time, stop and get the lead checked.

Common questions

How do I set up the hose and adapters?
Match the adapter to your hose diameter, clamp or clip the joint, and run the discharge with gentle bends to a legal outlet. Support lay-flat hose over edges so it cannot crease shut. Buy hose separately if the box only lists the pump. Clips matter as much as the pipe on the first wet test.
How does the float switch work?
The float rises to switch the pump on and falls to switch it off in automatic mode. That prevents dry running, and it can leave residual water. Clip height, or an adjustable holder, changes when that happens. The float needs free swing, or it snags and the pump stops early or keeps running.
How do I pump lower than the float allows?
Use continuous or manual lock, or temporarily hold the float in the on position, and stay present so you can stop before the pump runs dry. Finish the last centimetres by hand if you need a drier floor than the base will reach. Do not leave a locked float unattended.
What happens if it runs dry?
Seals and the motor can overheat quickly. Many listings warn against dry running, and some claim a thermal cut-out. Treat dry running as a failure to avoid, not as a normal way to finish the job. If the pump has already run dry, let it cool before you restart, and only after the intake is clear.
When should I stop and call an electrician?
Stop for a damaged cable, repeated unexplained RCD trips, a burning smell, or any plan for a permanent outdoor supply. Episodic portable use on a known-good RCD outlet is the DIY lane. Fixed wiring, a buried supply, and a fault you cannot explain are not. Do not keep resetting a trip to finish the empty.
