Empty a pond with a submersible pump

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are planning a seasonal pond cleanout or a hot-tub drain, the filter pump is still in the water, and it is tempting to aim that same unit at a full empty. Circulation pumps and drainage pumps are different tools. To empty a pond with a submersible pump, use a dirty-water drainage pump at the deepest point after fish and plants are secured, not a fountain kit run until it sucks air. This page covers that split, the prep, the placement and which rows in this comparison fit. The ASIN table is on the [submersible pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/submersible-pump). Drainage pump versus the pump that lives in the pond

A pond filter or fountain pump circulates through filters, UV or nozzles. It expects continuous immersion and managed debris. A dirty-water drainage pump pushes volume out through a hose for a cleanout, a flood or a hot-tub change. Using the filter pump to drain the pond dry risks a dry run, a sludge clog, and no proper discharge hose. Most FOTING, Einhell and KATSU rows here are drainage pumps. The 300 W pond-feature listing with nozzles is circulation hardware, wrong as the hero of a full empty. Turn the filter off before it runs dry, or keep it wet in a holding tub. Dirty versus clean is on dirty water vs clean water.

Prepare fish, plants and a safe discharge path

Move fish and sensitive plants into their own pond water before the level drops. This is husbandry common sense, not veterinary advice, and protected species or local rules may apply. Keep holding water aerated on a long job. Do not leave livestock in a sludge puddle. Switch fountain and filter circuits off so they do not dry-run. A lawn soakaway, an allowed foul drain, or a tank are typical outlets. A storm drain is not a free sink, and a neighbour’s drive is not a dump. Follow local rules. This page is not legal advice. Power the drainage pump only through a tested outdoor RCD and an outdoor-rated lead. The first-run hose and float are on how to use a submersible pump.

Placement, float behaviour and the sludge

Place the pump at the deepest point on a stable base so it stays immersed as the level falls. A slab can keep sludge out of the intake. Gentle bends matter: lay-flat pipe that creases looks like a failed pump. Auto float mode cuts out while water remains. UK notes on FOTING models often describe early cut-out. For a full empty, lock continuous mode and stay until you stop it, before the liner shows and the pump sucks air. A few centimetres left is normal on a dirty-water base. Sludge is finished by hand. The pump moves bulk water, not every gram of silt. Rinse and store it dry, then refill with dechlorinated water on a schedule that suits the livestock. A hot tub is the same bulk drain with fewer fish concerns. A 5 cm minimum on some KATSU kits still means a hand finish.

Which pumps in this comparison fit

Prefer mains dirty-water rows: the Einhell GC-DP 3325 for a smaller empty on a budget, the FOTING 900 W 14,000 L/h listing as the review-heavy pick, and the KATSU kit when you want 10 m of hose in the box. A higher-flow FOTING variant fits a larger volume if you accept a thinner sample and buy hose. Skip the pond-feature listing as a drainage hero, and skip the cordless 18 V body for a full garden pond. About 30 L/min will not empty it in an afternoon. Common questions

Can I use my pond filter pump to empty the pond?
Not as the main drainage tool. Filter and fountain pumps are for circulation. Use a dirty-water drainage submersible for the empty, and keep the filter wet or powered down so it does not run dry. A feature pump run until it sucks air is a dry-run risk, and it still may not give you a usable discharge hose.
Where do I place the drainage pump?
At the deepest point, stable and upright, with the float free to swing and the hose unkinked toward a discharge point you are allowed to use. A slab under the base can keep a sludge blanket out of the grill. As the level falls, the pump has to stay immersed until you choose to stop.
How do I protect fish during a cleanout?
Move them to holding water from the pond before the level collapses, keep that water suitable for the length of the job, and avoid leaving them in sludge puddles. Aerate the holding water if the empty will take hours. Seek specialist advice for valuable or sensitive stock. This is common-sense husbandry, not veterinary advice.
Where can the water go?
Only where you are allowed to discharge it: a lawn, an approved drain or a tank. Do not assume a storm drain or a neighbour’s land is acceptable. Check local rules for muddy water and for treated hot-tub water. Oily or heavily soiled water is a different discharge from clear pond water.
Will it remove the sludge at the bottom?
Bulk water, yes. Thick sludge usually needs finishing by hand. A dirty-water solids claim helps the pump survive grit. It does not vacuum the liner clean. Clear the grill if flow drops, then bucket and soft tools for what the pump leaves behind.
