A booster pump raises pressure in water that already reaches the inlet: a weak tap, a gravity-fed shower, or a hose limited by height and friction. It is not a surface pump for a water butt or a lake. You tell a suitable booster pump by the source, the plug and the voltage, not by the largest litre figure. Mains water, or a pipe fed from the mains, can need notice to the water undertaker above 12 litres per minute. A loft tank and a vented cylinder is a gravity job. Maximum flow and maximum head are two ends of a missing curve. UK mains are nominally 230 V with a BS 1363 plug, and a low-voltage body still has a mains adapter. Ignore a conflicting voltage or head line. Outdoors, use a 30 mA RCD. A temporary use ban can stop hosepipe watering. A pump is not an exemption. How to work through source, type and plug is in the [booster pump buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/booster-pump/sub/booster-pump-buying-guide).

A booster pump raises pressure in water that already reaches the inlet: a weak tap, a gravity-fed shower, or a hose limited by height and friction. It is not a surface pump for a water butt or a lake.

The best Booster pumps in detail

hzexun 220 V diaphragm

Rank 1

hzexun 220 V diaphragm

∼£108

Our view

The title sells the hzexun WDP24 as a 220 V garden-hose booster as well as a kitchen, bathroom, RV and marine pump, listed at £108.00 with 5.5 gallons per minute, 70 PSI and a claimed head of 160 feet. Self-priming is claimed up to 10 vertical feet, and the ports are half-inch threaded male fittings. The box list includes a water strainer and hose fittings. The rating line is 5.0 from one amazon.co.uk review, and the file has no review text, so that star does not describe noise, heat or how long the pump ran. On the stored score, which is that 5.0 multiplied by 20, it is the top pick in this table, and the sample is a single rating. A UK plug face is not stated, and hot water is not stated either.

Pros

  • Highest stored score in this table, from 5.0 and one rating
  • Title states 5.5 gallons per minute, 70 PSI and a garden hose
  • Self-priming claimed up to 10 vertical feet, head claimed at 160 feet
  • Strainer and hose fittings listed in the box

Cons

  • Only one amazon.co.uk rating, and no review text
  • UK plug face is not stated on a 220 V listing
  • Hot water is not stated
  • Gallon type on the 5.5 figure is not named

Best for: A 220 V garden-hose or RV washdown where the bullet’s half-inch male fittings and a strainer match the hose you already have.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants review text, a stated hot-water limit, or a confirmed BS 1363 plug.

What thread does the bullet state?

Half-inch threaded male fittings, with a built-in check valve.

Does the listing name a garden hose?

Yes, in the title, beside kitchen, bathroom, RV and marine uses.

Trident TP15-120Z

Rank 2

Trident TP15-120Z

∼£80

Our view

A trained plumber fitted the Trident TP15-120Z on a gravity-fed open-vented hot-water system in place of a Grundfos UPA 15-90, and describes a flow switch that starts when an outlet opens, writing the day after the job. The listing is a cast-iron central-heating booster at £79.99 claiming 30 litres per minute, 12 metres of head and 150 W, in a body of about 18 x 9 x 18 cm and 3 kg. The rating line is 4.8 from 11 amazon.co.uk reviews. Other UK texts mention strong pressure, quiet running and an easy install. No repeated fault is named in the five UK texts. Garden hose use is not in the listing, and voltage is not printed. An English instruction manual is named in a bullet.

Pros

  • 4.8 from 11 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Cast iron, 150 W, 30 L/min and 12 m claimed at £79.99
  • Plumber review on a gravity-fed open-vented hot-water system
  • English instruction manual named in a bullet
  • Six years EU spare-part availability on the specification line

Cons

  • Plumber review was written the day after fitting
  • Only 11 ratings, and no long-term fault is recorded
  • Voltage and a UK plug are not stated
  • Not sold as a garden hose pump

Best for: A gravity-fed open-vented hot-water circuit where you want a cast-iron booster around the UPA 15-90 size.

Less suitable: A garden hose, or a buyer who needs voltage printed and a review older than the day of install.

Common questions

Is the TP15-120Z a garden sprinkler pump?

No. The title is a large-capacity automatic central-heating water boosting pump. The usage line says home heating and residential use.

What did the plumber review compare it with?

An older Grundfos UPA 15-90 on a gravity-fed open-vented hot-water system. The review says this unit has a flow switch. The sample is 11 ratings.

Is a manual included?

The bullet says an English instruction manual. A full parts list is not in the file.

Ejoyous 24 V shower

Rank 3

Ejoyous 24 V shower

∼£42

Our view

Five UK texts include a useful top-floor faucet install and a hot kitchen tap where the buyer still thought a modest gain was worth £41.89 and easy to fit. The listing claims 25 litres per minute and 25 metres of head on this 24 V shower pump, and the rating line is 4.2 from only 8 amazon.co.uk reviews. Another text calls the result pretty ineffective, and the positive kitchen review says you should not expect a huge pressure increase. The bullet prints a boosting effect of 100 Pa beside a maximum of 1 MPa, and 100 Pa is stored as printed rather than as a shower result. A water-shortage shutoff is claimed when inlet flow is nearly zero. No UK plug is stated, and no broken part is named in those five texts.

Pros

  • 4.2 from 8 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK texts of a top-floor faucet and a hot kitchen tap
  • Claimed auto mode with the faucet and a low-pressure start
  • Water-shortage shutoff claimed in the bullet

Cons

  • Only eight ratings, and one UK text calls it pretty ineffective
  • Even a positive review warns against expecting a huge pressure rise
  • 100 Pa boosting line sits beside 1 MPa and is not a measured shower result
  • UK plug is not stated

Best for: A top-floor tap with weak flow, if a modest gain is enough and you can accept a sample of eight reviews.

Less suitable: A shower that needs a large pressure jump, or a buyer who wants a stated UK plug and a bigger review file.

Common questions

What does the 100 Pa figure mean on this listing?

The bullet prints a boosting effect of 100 Pa and a maximum pressure of 1 MPa. Both are stored as printed. 100 Pa is not used as a shower-pressure result.

Does the listing claim a water-shortage stop?

Yes. The bullet says the pump shuts off when inlet water is nearly zero.

How large is the review base?

The rating line is 4.2 from 8. Five UK texts were captured. One of them calls the pump ineffective.

Gugxiom 24 V inline

Rank 4

Gugxiom 24 V inline

∼£39

Our view

UK texts describe an easy fit under a sink on gravity feed, a clear gain on a weak hot tap and a washing machine, and a shut-off when the tap closes, on Gugxiom’s 24 V pump listed at £38.99. The title prints 25 litres per minute, 25 metres of head, 100 W and IP56, and the rating line is 4.1 from 32 amazon.co.uk reviews. Several of those texts call it quiet or only a little noisy. Two reviews record an early stop, one in under a month and one at about three months. One reviewer says the electrical connector sits too close to the outlet to treat the body as IP65. The box list includes a power supply, but the plug face is not described. It is the best value here because that 4.1 from 32 sits at £38.99, with a stated tap shut-off, below the cast-iron Trident prices and with a larger review file than the cheaper 3.7 Felenny line.

Pros

  • 4.1 from 32 amazon.co.uk reviews at £38.99
  • UK reviews of a clear gain on a weak hot tap and a washing machine
  • Switches off when the tap shuts, in the reviews and the bullets
  • Power supply, threaded hose and manual listed in the box
  • Dry-run stop claimed when inlet flow nears zero

Cons

  • Stopped in under a month in one review, and at about three months in another
  • Connector sits close to the outlet, so one reviewer rejected an IP65 reading
  • UK plug face is not described
  • One buyer had to replace a pipe that was too small

Best for: A gravity-fed hot tap or washing machine where you want a reviewed 24 V inline pump under £40.

Less suitable: A wet location where the connector must sit well clear of the outlet, or a job that needs a proven multi-year life.

Common questions

Does the Gugxiom listing include a power supply?

Yes. The included-components line lists a power supply with the pump, a threaded hose and a manual. The plug face is not described.

Does the listing claim a dry-run stop?

Yes. The bullet says the pump stops when inlet flow nears zero. That is a listing claim, not a test result in the file.

What ingress rating is printed?

The title prints IP56. A reviewer said the connector sits close to the outlet and they would not treat the pump as IP65.

Ruiqas 24 V inline

Rank 5

Ruiqas 24 V inline

∼£33

Our view

Buyers report a lift on a low-pressure shower, a kitchen sink and a gravity bathroom, and one mains-fed shower was still in use at two years in that account, on a pump listed at £32.99. The colour line reads Black - Uk Plug and the bullets claim 32 litres per minute, with a rating line of 4.0 from 23 amazon.co.uk reviews. One garden review notes more pressure and also says the pump is not mute. The specification line prints 879 volts and 22 feet, while the highlight says 22 metres, so you should treat those rows as conflicts rather than a second specification. A reviewer found a leak in streams after five days and no seal between the sections. Other texts say it stopped after an initially good period, or that the site description was not accurate.

Pros

  • Colour line states a UK plug
  • 4.0 from 23 amazon.co.uk reviews at £32.99
  • UK reviews of a shower, a kitchen sink and a washing-machine feed
  • One garden review that reports a pressure increase

Cons

  • Specification line prints 879 volts and 22 feet against 24 V and 22 m elsewhere
  • Leak after five days in one review, with no seal found between sections
  • Stopped pumping after a good start in more than one review
  • One buyer needed a 3/4 inch adapter the box did not supply

Best for: A low-pressure shower or kitchen tap where the colour line’s UK plug matters and you can ignore the 879 volt specification row.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs the printed voltage and head to agree, or a pump that must stay dry at the body joint.

Common questions

Which voltage should you trust on the Ruiqas listing?

The bullets say 24 V DC and the colour line says a UK plug. The specification line prints 879 volts. Both are stored. The 879 volt line is not a cleaned-up fact.

Is a UK plug stated?

Yes. The colour field reads Black - Uk Plug.

Did reviews mention leaks?

One reviewer said the pump leaked in streams after five days and found no seal between the sections.

Trident TP15-90Z

Rank 6

Trident TP15-90Z

∼£60

Our view

One review calls the Trident TP15-90Z quiet and states a flow improvement of about 70 percent on hot water or a shower, on a cast-iron booster listed at £59.99 with 25 litres per minute and an 8 metre head. It weighs 2.7 kg, and the rating line is 3.9 from 12 amazon.co.uk reviews, with four UK texts behind that count. The same small file includes a burn-out at about two weeks and a separate note that the item was not working. One reviewer mentions two speeds, while the specification line prints a single flow. Voltage and a UK plug are not stated. Garden use is not in the title, so a hose on the lawn is outside what this listing describes.

Pros

  • Cast iron, 2.7 kg, listed at £59.99
  • Claimed 25 L/min and 8 m for a heating circuit
  • One review of quiet running and about 70 percent more flow
  • 3.9 from 12 amazon.co.uk reviews

Cons

  • Burned out in about two weeks in one review
  • Another review says the item was not working
  • Voltage and UK plug are not stated
  • Garden use is not in the listing

Best for: A central-heating or shower circuit where 8 metres of claimed head matches the pipe run and you accept a 12-review sample.

Less suitable: A garden hose or sprinkler, or any install that needs a stated voltage and a longer proven life than two weeks.

Common questions

Is the TP15-90Z sold as a garden hose pump?

No. The title is an automatic central-heating water booster. Garden use is not stated.

What head does the listing print?

8 metres, with 25 litres per minute as the flow line. One review also mentions two speeds, which is not a second spec-line flow.

What failure is in the reviews?

One reviewer says it burned out in two weeks. Another says the item was not working. The rating line is 3.9 from 12.

Felenny 24 V inline

Rank 7

Felenny 24 V inline

∼£30

Our view

UK reviewers fit the Felenny on a kitchen hot feed or a shower, and one buyer put the gain at about three times the old flow, against a listing of 32 litres per minute and 22 metres at £29.99. The rating line behind those texts is 3.7 from 97 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest sample in this set. The same file includes a high-pitched squeal heard two floors down, a garden hose that did not improve, and a European plug that needed an adapter. Another unit arrived with a broken earth pin and still ran. Failures show up after about six weeks, and one park-home buyer said a previous unit lasted 18 months. The package-list bullet names an AC adapter, while the components line says the pump only.

Pros

  • Largest review file in this set, 3.7 from 97
  • Claimed 32 L/min and 22 m at £29.99
  • UK reviews of a kitchen hot feed and a shower that started with the tap
  • Package-list bullet names a pump, pipe, adapter, screw kit and manual

Cons

  • European plug in one review, and a broken earth pin in another
  • No useful pressure gain in more than one review, including a garden hose
  • Stops after weeks or months in more than one text
  • Package list and the components line disagree

Best for: You want the cheapest inline pump in this table and you can check the plug is BS 1363 before you fit it on a tap.

Less suitable: A garden hose that already has weak flow, or any install where a European plug or a short working life would be a problem.

Common questions

Does the Felenny listing state a UK plug?

No. One UK review says the unit came with a European plug. Another says the earth pin arrived broken.

Can the listing be read as a garden sprinkler pump?

Garden sprinklers are named on the compatible-devices line. One reviewer said a garden hose was no better after fitting it.

What flow and head does the listing print?

32 litres per minute and 22 metres. Those are separate maximums. The file has no curve.

YUCHENGTECH 220 V diaphragm

Rank 8

YUCHENGTECH 220 V diaphragm

∼£110

Our view

UK reviewers describe vacuum-cleaner noise, heavy vibration and early stops on this 220 V diaphragm pump, listed at £109.89 with an open flow of 11.3 litres per minute and a claimed head of 98 feet. The rating line is 2.8 from 23 amazon.co.uk reviews, and one buyer still says the pressure is really good. Stops are dated at about 10 days and at two months. One reviewer says two units lost their diaphragms while pumping water up to 60 °C, even though the highlight says hot and cold. Brass garden-hose fittings and a 50-mesh strainer are in the box list, and the open-flow bullet also prints 3.0 gallons per minute at 88 W. A UK plug is not stated. At this price the review file is the constraint, not the fitting kit.

Pros

  • Brass garden-hose fittings and a 50-mesh strainer in the box
  • Open flow printed as 11.3 L/min and 3.0 gallons per minute
  • One UK review that calls the pressure really good
  • Short-term dry running claimed in the bullet

Cons

  • 2.8 from 23 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Noise compared with a vacuum cleaner, plus heavy vibration
  • Stops at about 10 days and at two months in UK texts
  • Diaphragms failed on water up to 60 °C in one review of two pumps

Best for: Cold garden watering where you specifically want the brass hose fittings and you have read the 2.8 score first.

Less suitable: Hot water up to 60 °C, a quiet kitchen, or anyone paying £109.89 for a long service life.

Common questions

Why is the star rating low?

The line is 2.8 from 23. UK texts cite noise, vibration, a stop after about 10 days, a stop after two months, and diaphragms that failed on water up to 60 °C.

Are hose fittings included?

Yes. The box list includes two brass garden hose fittings and a 50-mesh strainer.

What open flow does the bullet print?

3.0 gallons per minute, converted in the same bullet to 11.3 litres per minute.

YUCHENGTECH 12 V diaphragm

Rank 9

YUCHENGTECH 12 V diaphragm

∼£59

Our view

The box list puts two brass garden-hose fittings, a strainer and hose fittings with this 12 V diaphragm pump, listed at £59.41 with an open flow of 11.3 litres per minute and 88 W. The specification line prints a maximum lift of 30 feet, while a bullet prints 98 feet (30 metres), so both head figures stay in the file and they do not agree. The power-source line says ac even though the title says 12 V. Bullets claim short-term dry running and a pressure switch that starts with the faucet, and they name a shower, an RV and irrigation. There is no customer-review line, so noise, a hot-water limit and a real 12 V install are not checked by buyers in this file. You need a 12 V feed; a UK 13 A socket is not what the title describes.

Pros

  • 12 V diaphragm with brass garden-hose fittings in the box
  • Open flow stated as 11.3 L/min and 88 W at £59.41
  • Strainer, hose fittings and a manual listed
  • Short-term dry running and a faucet pressure switch claimed

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk star line in the file
  • Head is 30 feet on the spec line and 30 metres in a bullet
  • Power-source line prints ac against a 12 V title
  • Hot-water limit is not stated as a number

Best for: A 12 V supply you already have, such as an RV or a battery feed, where brass hose fittings matter more than reviews.

Less suitable: A UK mains socket, or a buyer who needs one agreed head figure and a review score.

Topiky three-speed

Rank 10

Topiky three-speed

∼£64

Our view

Topiky’s bullet names a faucet, a shower, a garden nozzle and home irrigation, with automatic start when the tap opens, on a three-speed inline pump listed at £63.95. The title includes the words UK Plug. The same bullet pairs 100 W, 150 W and 200 W with 25, 30 and 35 litres per minute, while the specification line prints 35 litres per minute, 18 metres of head and 0.13 horsepower. A water-shortage stop is also claimed. The included-components line says no, so you should not assume fittings arrive with the pump. There is no customer-review line, which means the UK plug, the three speeds and any quiet running are untested in this file. A buyer question about pipe diameter is unanswered.

Pros

  • Title states a UK plug
  • Three claimed speeds, 100 / 150 / 200 W, up to 35 L/min
  • 18 m head on the specification line
  • Water-shortage stop and tap start claimed in the bullets

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk star line in the file
  • Included-components line says no
  • Spec line power is 0.13 horsepower against a 200 W bullet
  • Pipe diameter is not answered

Best for: A home tap or shower where you want a stated UK plug and three listed speeds, and you can buy on the bullets alone.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs review evidence, a parts list, or a stated pipe size before ordering.

Draper 27483

Rank 11

Draper 27483

∼£146

Our view

The Draper 27483 is the only tank-and-gauge set in this comparison, listed at £146.03 as a 230 V stainless booster claiming 50 litres per minute and 800 W, at 12.9 kg. The warranty line says 12 months parts and labour, and the bullets name a pressure control switch and a gauge. Head, a shower rating and a hot-water limit are not printed, and buyer questions on those points are unanswered in the file. Garden use is not stated. There is no customer-review line, so the quiet bullet and the stainless tank are listing text only. A UK plug face is not described, though the voltage is printed as 230 V. You are paying the highest price here for a surface-mounted set whose working head is still blank.

Pros

  • 230 V stainless pump and tank, with a pressure switch and gauge
  • 50 L/min and 800 W printed in the title
  • 12 months parts and labour on the warranty line
  • Only tank-and-gauge booster in this set

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk star line in the file
  • Maximum head is not printed
  • Shower use and hot water are not stated

Common questions

Does the Draper listing state a maximum head?

No. Flow is 50 litres per minute and power is 800 W. Head is not printed.

Is a tank included?

The bullets say a stainless steel pump and tank, plus a pressure control switch and a gauge.

Is there a review score?

No customer-review line was captured. The listing warranty line says 12 months parts and labour.

How we compared

Eleven amazon.co.uk listings are on this page. The headline score is the captured star line times 20, so 4.1 becomes 82. Listings with no star line score 0. The top pick is the hzexun 220 V diaphragm because that method gives it 100, from 5.0 and one rating. That is not a large sample and not a laboratory test. Best value is the Gugxiom 24 V inline pump: 4.1 from 32 reviews at about £38.99, with a stated shut-off when the tap closes. Where a listing prints feet only, the table shows metres at 0.3048 m per foot. Where two head figures conflict, both are shown in metres. The 5.5 gallon flow is not converted, because the gallon type is not named. Prices, stars and review counts are the amazon.co.uk lines captured for these listings. Public UK sources cover the 12 litre notice, plugs and hosepipe bans.

1

Water source

25%

Mains, or a pipe fed from the mains, can need notice above 12 litres per minute. A loft tank and a vented cylinder is a gravity job. A butt belongs with a surface pump, not this set.

2

Pump type for that source

20%

A small 24 V inline body suits one tap if water already flows. Cast-iron units are sold for heating and gravity hot water. Diaphragm units claim self-priming. A stainless 230 V set adds a tank and a gauge.

3

Flow and head, kept apart

20%

Maximum flow and maximum head are two ends of a curve these listings do not print. They are not added, and both are not expected at once. A conflicting second figure stays a conflict.

4

Plug and voltage

20%

UK mains are nominally 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. Rows that say 220 V, or 24 V via an adapter, are scored on what the listing actually prints. A 24 V pump still has a mains adapter.

5

Price, reviews and failures

15%

Shelf price, the amazon.co.uk review count and written failures come after the source and the plug. Early stops, noise, leaks and no pressure change stay in the assessment. A single 5.0 is not treated as a large sample.

Booster pump buying guide

Start with the source, then the machine, then the plug. A booster pump only helps water that already reaches the inlet. Above 12 litres per minute from a mains-fed pipe, tell the water undertaker before you fit it. Read flow and head as separate maximums. Check for a BS 1363 plug, or for the adapter on a 24 V body. Use the shelf price, the review count and the failure texts after those checks. This page does not add a laboratory score on top of the amazon.co.uk star line.

What is a booster pump?

A booster pump raises pressure in water that can already reach the inlet. The usual UK jobs are a weak tap, a gravity-fed shower, and a hose limited by height and friction. It is not a surface pump for a water butt or a lake, and it is not a shallow-well pump that has to suck from a standing store. Name the source before you compare headline litres. Mains water, or any pipe fed from the mains, can need notice and consent if the pump draws more than 12 litres per minute.

Best for

  • A gravity-fed hot tap or shower where water already reaches the pump
  • A garden hose on mains water, after you have checked the 12 litre notice
  • A 230 V surface install where you want a tank and a gauge and can accept a blank head

Not ideal for

  • Lifting water from a butt, a lake or any store the inlet cannot already see
  • A combi, unvented cylinder or sealed circuit fitted from a gravity-fed video
  • A buyer who needs a WRAS number or a printed pump curve from these listings

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Ranking on the maximum litres

The largest flow figure is one end of a curve the listing does not print. Head at that flow is not the maximum head. Adding the two numbers, or expecting both at once, overstates what the pump will do on your pipe.

  2. 2

    Trusting a conflicting figure

A stray voltage, a 100 Pa line beside a much higher pressure, or feet on one row and metres on another is a conflict. Keep both lines. Do not promote the tidier number into a cleaned specification.

  3. 3

Using an inline body as a suction pump

An inline booster does not lift from a butt. A gravity video is also the wrong guide for a combi, an unvented cylinder or a sealed circuit. Call a plumber for those jobs, and notify the water company before a notifiable pump is fitted.

What to weigh up

Water source and the 12 litre line

High

Name the source before you compare pumps. If the water is mains, or any pipe fed from the mains, a pump drawing more than 12 litres per minute can need notice and consent. In England and Wales that is regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Scotland’s 2014 byelaw 5 and Northern Ireland’s 2009 regulations, regulation 5, use the same line. Ten silent working days can deem consent in England and Wales.

Plug, voltage, flow and head

High

Match the machine to the source, then read the electrical line. About 1 kg 24 V inline bodies suit one tap if water already flows. Cast-iron units are sold as central-heating and gravity hot boosters. Diaphragm pumps claim self-priming and a pressure switch. A stainless 230 V set with a tank and a gauge is a different product. UK mains are nominally 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. A listing that says 220 V, or 24 V via an adapter, has not stated a UK 13 A plug unless those words are actually there.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A weak gravity hot tap

Water already reaches a loft-fed tap or shower and you want a reviewed 24 V inline body. The Gugxiom at about £38.99 is the best value: 4.1 from 32 amazon.co.uk reviews, with a stated shut-off when the tap closes. UK texts describe a gain on a weak hot tap. Two reviews record an early stop, and the plug face is not described.

A mains garden tap

Clear the hose and the washer first, then the 12 litre notice. These pumps do not suck from a butt. The Topiky three-speed listing is the one whose title states a UK plug and whose bullet names a garden nozzle, at about £63.95. There is no star line in the file, so you are buying the wording on the page.

A 230 V tank and gauge

You want a surface-mounted stainless set rather than a 1 kg inline body. The Draper 27483 is the only tank-and-gauge listing here, at about £146.03, printed as 230 V, 50 litres per minute and 800 W. Head is not stated, and there is no star line. A shower temperature is not printed either.

Common questions about Booster pumps

What is a booster pump, and what is it not?
A booster pump raises pressure in water that can already reach the inlet, such as a weak tap, a gravity shower, or a hose limited by height and friction. It is not a surface pump for a water butt or a lake, and it is not a shallow-well pump. If you need to lift stored rainwater, that is a different machine. See the rain barrel pump comparison for butts. Judge a booster by the source, the plug, and whether flow and head are printed as two separate maximums.
When must you notify the water company?
In England and Wales, regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 requires notice and consent before a pump drawing more than 12 litres per minute joins a supply pipe, directly or indirectly. A non-hand garden system is also notifiable. Ten silent working days can deem consent, and Schedule 2 still requires backflow protection. Scotland’s 2014 byelaw 5 and Northern Ireland’s 2009 regulations, regulation 5, use the same 12 litre line. A headline flow above 12 litres per minute is not permission to pump the rising main.
Can these pumps pull water from a water butt?
No. A booster pump in this comparison works on water that can already reach the inlet. A butt, a lake or any standing store needs a pump that can suck or sit in the water. Clearing a hose washer does not turn an inline body into a suction pump. Rainwater must also stay off the wholesome drinking-water pipe. If the job is a butt, leave this table. Most headline flows here are also above the 12 litre notice line, which is a separate mains-water point.
What plug and voltage should you expect in the UK?
UK mains are nominally 230 V, and the plug should be BS 1363. Read the voltage line and the plug face on the listing. Several booster pumps are sold as 220 V, or as 24 V with a mains adapter. A 24 V pump still plugs into the mains through that adapter. A colour line that says UK plug is a listing claim, not proof of what arrives. Reviews here include a European plug. Outdoors, use a 30 mA RCD and an outdoor lead.
Why should you not add maximum flow to maximum head?
Maximum flow and maximum head are the two ends of a pump curve. At the highest flow the head is at its lowest, and at the highest head the flow is at its lowest. Listings here print one number for each and do not include a curve, so you cannot expect both figures at the same time, and you should not add them. A second figure in different units is a conflict to keep, not a second performance. No row in this comparison includes a pump curve.
Which booster pump is the top pick here?
The top pick is the hzexun 220 V diaphragm at about £108. The stored score is the amazon.co.uk star line times 20, and that line is 5.0 from one review with no review text. The title names a garden hose. The bullets claim self-priming, a pressure switch, half-inch male fittings, a strainer and 160 feet of head. A UK plug face and hot water are not stated. It is not a large-sample test and not a laboratory result.
Which booster pump is the best value?
The best value is the Gugxiom 24 V inline pump at about £38.99. amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 from 32 reviews, and the bullets state a shut-off when the tap closes. UK texts describe a gain on a weak hot tap and a washing machine. Two reviews record an early stop, and the plug face is not described. The title’s IP56 mark is not a tested wet rating. The price sits below the cast-iron boosters.
Does a hosepipe ban stop you using a booster pump?
A temporary use ban under section 36 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 can stop hosepipe watering in the area of the water company that imposed it. A pump is not an exemption. The ban is not automatically UK-wide, so check your own undertaker. Stored rainwater is sometimes treated differently from mains water. That is a company rule, not a feature of the pump. Outdoors, keep the supply on a 30 mA RCD and an outdoor lead whether or not a ban is in force.

Our verdict

The top pick is the hzexun 220 V diaphragm, model WDP24, at about £108. The stored score is 5.0 from one amazon.co.uk rating, multiplied by 20, and the file has no review text. The title names a garden hose, with 5.5 gallons per minute, a claimed head of 160 feet, self-priming and a strainer in the box. A UK plug and hot water are not stated. That score leads this table. It is not a large-sample result. The best value is the Gugxiom 24 V inline pump at about £38.99, with 4.1 from 32 reviews, a stated tap shut-off, and UK texts of a gain on a weak hot tap. Two reviews record an early stop, and the plug face is not described. None of these figures is a laboratory test.
