Die stock comparison 2026

The best die stocks, compared.

Top pick: Unifizz holder and 1/2-13 UNC die Best value: BGS 1891 pipe die stock set – Highest value-part score, at about £26.32, for six inch dies, if you confirm the thread form before a sealing joint. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A die stock is the handled holder that turns a threading die on an external thread. On amazon.co.uk that name covers a round bolt holder, a 20 mm and 25 mm conduit stock, and an inch pipe ratchet, and those three do not share dies. Match a round stock to the die's outside diameter. A water-pipe die is the wrong cutter for conduit, and none of these sets is for gas. A round die stock has handles and a socket for one circular die. You use it on bar, studding and bolts. A conduit stock is sold with guides and dies for steel electrical conduit, in Britain usually 20 mm and 25 mm. Prints 1.5 mm pitch on a 20 mm conduit die. How to choose is set out in the [die stock buying guide](/hub/workshop/die-stock/sub/die-stock-buying-guide).

The best die stocks in detail

Unifizz holder and 1/2-13 UNC die

Rank 1

Unifizz holder and 1/2-13 UNC die

∼£20

Our view

The Unifizz stock, listed at £19.56, includes one 1/2-13 UNC die of 38 mm outside diameter. The holder fit line says 26–38 mm and mentions M12–M16 as a range, not as a second die in the box. The rating line is 5.0 from 8. The file has three reviews: a short UK note that it is well built, a UK review that is only an emoji, and a US note about threading a barrel. No fault is named, and that thin file is not a workshop verdict. One bullet says five adjustable screws and another says four. The die is UNC, so it will not repair an ordinary metric bolt. The listed weight is 381 g.

Pros

  • 1/2-13 UNC die is in the box, at 38 mm outside diameter
  • Holder range printed as 26–38 mm
  • £19.56 on 19 October 2026
  • No fault named in the three short reviews

Cons

  • 5.0 from 8, with only three thin texts in the file
  • Screw count disagrees: five in one bullet, four in another
  • The UNC die will not cut a metric bolt
  • M12–M16 on the fit line is not a second die

Best for: You need a 1/2-13 UNC external thread and a die of about 38 mm outside diameter.

Less suitable: You need metric studding, a large review sample, or a conduit set.

Common questions

Is the included die metric?

No. The included die is 1/2-13 UNC with a 38 mm outside diameter. The fit line also says the holder takes a 26–38 mm OD die and mentions M12–M16. That M range is not a second die in the box.

How many clamping screws does the listing claim?

One bullet says five adjustable screws. The durable-design bullet says four. The file does not resolve that.

What do the reviews in the file actually say?

The line is 5.0 from 8. The file has three reviews: a short UK note that it is well built, a UK review that is only an emoji, and a US note about threading a barrel. No fault is named.

CoCud holder for 36–55 mm dies

Rank 2

CoCud holder for 36–55 mm dies

∼£19

Our view

The CoCud holder at £19.39 is a one-piece stock for a round die that is not included. The printed fit is M24–M27 or 36–55 mm outside diameter, the overall length is 480 mm, and the weight is 880 g, in zinc alloy and carbon steel. The rating line is 4.6 from 17, and the same two UK reviews appear on the larger CoCud listing, so those 17 should be counted once. One UK review says it does the job and that the screw threads are a little loose. The other says the threads were burred and otherwise fine. Neither review names M24–M27. A finish line says polished where the bullet says nickel plated. Buy it only when a die you already own sits in that outside-diameter band, and check the clamp screws before the first cut.

Pros

  • Outside-diameter band printed as 36–55 mm
  • 480 mm handles and 880 g
  • Two UK review texts, if the shared block is counted once
  • £19.39 on 19 October 2026

Cons

  • The die is not included
  • Same review block as the 47–65 mm listing
  • Loose screw threads and burrs in those two texts
  • Nickel plated in one line, polished in another

Best for: You already own a round die in the 36–55 mm band and you will check the screws before the first cut.

Less suitable: You need a die in the box, or you are counting 17 reviews as unique to this size.

Common questions

Is a round die in the box?

No. The listing is a one-piece die stock for a round die that is not included. The printed fit is M24–M27 or 36–55 mm outside diameter.

What did the UK reviews say?

Two UK reviews are in the file. One says it does the job and that the screw threads are a little loose. The other says the threads were burred and otherwise perfect. The same text appears on B0C2PX1WWR.

What is it made of?

Zinc alloy and carbon steel, described as nickel plated in the bullet. A later line says polished. Overall length is 480 mm and weight is 880 g.

CoCud holder for 47–65 mm dies

Rank 3

CoCud holder for 47–65 mm dies

∼£27

Our view

The CoCud holder at £26.59 is a one-piece stock for a round die that is not in the box. The printed fit is M30–M36 or 47–65 mm outside diameter, the overall length is 600 mm, and the weight is 1.32 kg, in zinc alloy and carbon steel. The rating line is 4.6 from 17, and the same two UK reviews are printed on the 36–55 mm CoCud listing, so those 17 are not a separate test of this size. Those reviews mention loose screw threads and burrs, and they do not name M30–M36. You pay more than the mid-size holder for a larger socket and the same evidence. A later line says polished where the bullet says nickel plated. It only makes sense if you already own a die in that outside-diameter band.

Pros

  • 47–65 mm outside-diameter band is printed
  • 600 mm overall and 1.32 kg
  • The bullet says the round die is not included
  • Zinc alloy and carbon steel stated

Cons

  • Same 17-review block as the cheaper 36–55 mm holder
  • Those reviews do not name this size
  • No die in the box
  • £26.59 for a holder only

Best for: You already have a 47–65 mm round die and you want the longer handles.

Less suitable: You are treating the 4.6 line as a separate test of this size, or you still need to buy the die.

Common questions

Is a die included?

No. The bullet says the round die is not included. The printed fit is M30–M36 or 47–65 mm outside diameter.

How long is the holder?

The listing prints 600 mm overall, a 65 mm by 25 mm head, and a weight of 1.32 kg. Material is zinc alloy and carbon steel, with nickel plate in the bullet.

Are the 17 reviews only about this size?

The same two UK reviews, the same 4.6 from 17, and the same rank are printed on B0C2PXMP8N. Those reviews mention loose screw threads and burrs. They do not name M30–M36.

ALETO 20 mm and 25 mm conduit stock

Rank 4

ALETO 20 mm and 25 mm conduit stock

∼£40

Our view

The ALETO set, listed at £39.99, is sold as a seven-piece stock, guide and die kit for 20 mm and 25 mm conduit. On amazon.co.uk it is 4.5 from 76 reviews, and the review texts in the file are the ones that describe cuts on metal conduit, which is why it is the top pick when that is the job. One account reports about fifty threads and a die that was still sharp. Others report a thread too small for the coupling, a 25 mm cut that only behaved once the tube was square, and hard effort even with cutting compound. The specification block does not print a pitch, and it does not list the seven parts one by one. A case is not in the spec, though UK reviews mention a strong case, and they also say you still need a separate pipe vice. It is the wrong tool for a water-pipe thread or a metric bolt.

Pros

  • Title names 20 mm and 25 mm conduit, with dies and guides
  • 4.5 from 76 amazon.co.uk reviews, with UK review text
  • One report of about fifty cuts still sharp
  • £39.99 on 19 October 2026

Cons

  • Pitch and the seven parts are not itemised
  • Some UK reviews say the thread is too small for the coupling
  • 25 mm needs a square cut, and effort stays high with compound
  • No pipe vice in the box

Best for: You are threading 20 mm or 25 mm steel conduit and you already have a pipe vice.

Less suitable: You need a printed pitch, a BSP water-pipe thread, or a metric bolt die.

Common questions

Does this set include dies for 20 mm and 25 mm conduit?

The title says a 20 mm and 25 mm conduit stock, guide and die set, in seven pieces. The specification block does not list those seven parts, and it does not print a pitch or a standard number.

Does the listing include a case and a pipe clamp?

A case is not in the specification block. UK reviews mention a strong case. They also say you need a separate pipe clamp or vice. The listing does not include that clamp.

What do the UK reviews say about the thread?

Reviewers report threads on 20 mm and 25 mm metal conduit, including one account of about fifty cuts still sharp. Others report a thread too small for the coupling, a cut that only worked when 25 mm tube was square, and hard effort even with cutting compound.

CoCud holder for 31–45 mm dies

Rank 5

CoCud holder for 31–45 mm dies

∼£15

Our view

The CoCud holder at £14.99 is a one-piece stock without a die, printed for M16–M20 or 31–45 mm outside diameter. Length is 425 mm and weight is 576 g, in zinc alloy and carbon steel, with the finish listed as powder coated rather than nickel plate. The rating line is 4.3 from 5. The only review body in the file is marked Germany: internal burrs had to be removed before the die would fit, and the holder was acceptable for the money after that. No United Kingdom review text is in the file. The rank line sits under adjustable wrenches, which does not change the tool, but it does show how thin the listing evidence is. It is the cheapest holder here that still prints an outside-diameter band, and it still needs a die you supply.

Pros

  • Outside-diameter band printed as 31–45 mm
  • 425 mm overall and 576 g
  • Lowest holder price in the set, at £14.99
  • Powder-coated finish is stated, so it is not sold as nickel plate

Cons

  • The die is not included
  • The only review in the file is marked Germany and describes burrs in the bore
  • Five ratings and no UK review body
  • Listed under adjustable wrenches rather than taps and dies

Best for: You already have a 31–45 mm round die and you will clear the bore before it seats.

Less suitable: You want UK review text, a die in the box, or a nickel-plated finish.

Common questions

Does it come with a die?

No. It is a one-piece holder. The printed fit is M16–M20 or 31–45 mm outside diameter. Length is 425 mm and weight is 576 g.

What is the only review in the file about?

One review, marked Germany, says internal burrs had to be removed before the die would fit, and that the holder was acceptable for the money once that was done. No United Kingdom review body is in the file. The rating line is 4.3 from 5.

Is it nickel plated?

This listing does not say nickel plated. The finish line says powder coated, and the colour line says silver. Material is zinc alloy and carbon steel.

BGS 1891 pipe die stock set

Rank 6

BGS 1891 pipe die stock set

∼£26

Our view

The BGS 1891, listed at £26.32, is a ratchet pipe set with one die each at 1/4 in, 3/8 in, 1/2 in, 3/4 in, 1 in and 1 1/4 in, plus an extension bar. The rating line is 4.2 from 228, the largest sample here, though the fifty review bodies in the file are not marked United Kingdom. Those texts describe occasional cuts on the smaller sizes, and broken teeth or a broken handle once the work reaches 1 in. The listing does not print BSPT, BSPP, NPT, R or G, so the inch sizes alone do not tell you which thread you will cut. The title says eight pieces and another line says one. At 5.66 kg it is a bench tool. It is the best value in this set only if you want several inch pipe dies for less than a named BSPT kit, and you will confirm the thread form before you cut a sealing joint.

Pros

  • Six inch sizes named, plus a ratchet and an extension bar
  • £26.32, against a named BSPT kit at £89.08 including VAT elsewhere
  • Largest rating sample in the set, 4.2 from 228
  • Alloy steel stated

Cons

  • BSPT, BSPP and NPT are not printed
  • Review bodies in the file are not marked United Kingdom
  • Broken teeth and a broken handle reported around 1 in
  • Piece count conflicts: the title says 8, another line says 1

Best for: You want a few small inch pipe threads and you will check R or G against the fitting before you start.

Less suitable: You need a printed BSPT standard, a reliable 1 in cut, or a metric stud.

Common questions

Which pipe sizes are in the BGS 1891 set?

The bullets list one die each at 1/4 in, 3/8 in, 1/2 in, 3/4 in, 1 in and 1 1/4 in, plus a pipe threading ratchet and an extension bar. The title says eight pieces. Another line says one piece.

Does the listing name BSPT or BSPP?

No. The sizes are inch pipe sizes. The file does not print BSPT, BSPP, NPT, R or G.

Are the 228 reviews from the United Kingdom?

The rating line is 4.2 from 228. The fifty review bodies in the raw file are not marked United Kingdom. They describe occasional cuts on smaller sizes and broken teeth or a broken handle on 1 in.

MACHSWON holder and 3/8-16 UNC die

Rank 7

MACHSWON holder and 3/8-16 UNC die

Our view

The MACHSWON stock, listed at £3.35, pairs a small round holder with a 3/8-16 UNC die. The fit line says 20–30 mm outside diameter and mentions M9–M11 as a holder range, not as a metric die in the box. The rating line is 3.4 from 8. Two UK reviews say it did the job. One UK review says that on first use the die came loose and that tightening the screws then stripped the threads. Several bullets describe a high speed steel tap, but the specification block does not list a tap among the components. The listed weight is 260 g. The price is the lowest in this comparison, and the stripped clamp screws are why it is not the best value.

Pros

  • 3/8-16 UNC die is named on the title
  • £3.35 on 19 October 2026
  • Two UK reviews say it completed a job
  • Listed weight 260 g

Cons

  • One UK review: the die came loose, then the screw threads stripped
  • 3.4 from 8 on amazon.co.uk
  • Bullets describe a tap the components line does not list
  • UNC, so it is not a metric bolt repair

Best for: You need one 3/8-16 UNC thread and you will stop if the die walks in the holder.

Less suitable: You want a holder that stays clamped, a tap you can confirm is in the box, or a metric bolt.

Common questions

Is a tap included?

The title is a round die stock and a 3/8-16 UNC die. Several bullets describe a high speed steel tap and female threads. The specification block does not list a tap as an included component.

Is the die metric?

The die on the title is 3/8-16 UNC. The fit line says the holder takes a 20–30 mm OD die and mentions M9–M11. That is a holder range, not a metric die in the box.

What failed in the UK reviews?

Two UK reviews say it did the job. One UK review says that on first use the die came loose and that tightening the screws then stripped the threads. The rating line is 3.4 from 8. No case is listed.

How we compared

Shelf prices, stars and review counts are the seven amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison, read on 19 October 2026. There is no laboratory test. The score runs from 0 to 100: stars, the review evidence, fit for the job, and value in this set. The highest score is the top pick, once. Best value is the highest value-part score, once, and it is not given to the top pick. A 5.0 from eight thin texts does not lead.

1

Stars

35%

Amazon stars divided by 5, then multiplied by 35, and rounded. A listing with no rating line scores 0 on this part.

2

Evidence

20%

50 to 199 reviews with UK text about the named job score 12. 200 or more ratings whose review bodies are not marked United Kingdom score 8. A shared UK review block counted once scores 6, and the duplicate listing of that block scores 2. Fewer than 50, with a named UK fault, score 4. A thin 5.0 file, or fewer than 10 with only a non-UK review body, scores 3.

3

Fit for the job

30%

A conduit set with both sizes, guides in the title, and UK reviews of real cuts scores 24. A six-die inch ratchet whose thread form is not printed scores 18. A named UNC die in the box, with a thin review file, scores 16. A holder only, in a large or mid outside-diameter band, scores 14. A holder only, in a small band, with burrs in the only review, scores 12. A named UNC die after a UK report of stripped clamp screws scores 8.

4

Value in this set

15%

Several inch dies under £30, in the largest sample, with the form unnamed, score 13. A named die under £20 with a thin 5.0 line scores 11. The cheapest holder that still prints a band, with no die, scores 10. A complete conduit set at the top of this price sample scores 9. A mid holder with no die, under £20, scores 8. The cheapest sticker, with stripped screws in a UK review, scores 7. A large holder with no die, priced near the six-die set, scores 6.

Die stock buying guide

Buy the job and the die, then the holder. A round stock, a conduit stock and a pipe ratchet do not share cutters. Match the outside diameter, and read whether a die is in the box. Prices in this amazon.co.uk set run from about £3.35 to about £39.99. Gas pipe is not a job for these sets. Cutting oil stays on the die and off your skin.

What is a die stock?

A die stock is the handled holder that turns a threading die so you can cut an external thread. UK shelves use that name for three different tools, and they do not share dies. A round die stock has handles and a socket for one circular die. You use it on bar, studding and bolts. A conduit stock is sold with guides and dies for steel electrical conduit, in Britain usually 20 mm and 25 mm. DETA prints 1.5 mm pitch on a 20 mm conduit die. A water-pipe die is the wrong cutter for that tube.

Best for

  • A mechanic cutting one external thread on mild steel or a UNC fastener
  • An electrician threading 20 mm or 25 mm galvanised conduit, with a pipe vice

Not ideal for

  • Any gas pipe, which needs a competent person under the gas safety regulations
  • An internal thread, which needs a tap, not a die stock

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying by the thread name

The outside diameter and the die type decide the fit. BS 1127 split dies and DIN 223 solid dies do not share a stock. A line that only says 1/2 inch has not told you whether the thread is R or G.

  2. 2

Assuming a die is in the box

Three CoCud listings are holders only. An M-range on the Unifizz or MACHSWON fit line is not a second die. A tap that appears only in the bullet text is not on the components line.

  3. 3

Putting a pipe die on conduit

Conduit in this set is 20 mm and 25 mm steel tube. A BSP water-pipe die is the wrong cutter. Hold the tube in a vice or pipe clamp, and keep cutting oil off your skin.

What to weigh up

Job and thread form

High

The first split is the job. A bolt or stud, steel conduit, and steel pipe need different tools. A round holder, a conduit stock and a pipe ratchet do not share dies. Round stocks turn one circular die on bar, studding or a bolt. Conduit stocks, in Britain, are for 20 mm and 25 mm steel electrical conduit. DETA prints 1.5 mm pitch on a 20 mm conduit die, and a water-pipe die is the wrong cutter. Pipe stocks use inch dies in a ratchet. The sealing series is R, or BSPT, to BS EN 10226.

Outside diameter and box contents

High

The holder has to match the die's outside diameter and the die type. BS 1127 split dies use inch outside diameters and three screws. The centre screw opens the die for the first cut. DIN 223 solid dies use metric outside diameters and four screws. Do not mix a split die with a solid stock. Accu's chart and Protool both tell you to match the outside diameter, and to prefer zinc for a small die and steel for a large one.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Steel conduit, 20 or 25 mm

You thread 20 mm or 25 mm galvanised conduit into boxes, and you already have a pipe vice and cutting compound. The ALETO set is the top pick at about £39.99. Both sizes are in the title, and the score is 77 from 4.5 across 76 reviews. Some UK reviews say the thread was small for the coupling. Pitch is not printed.

Inch water pipe, not gas

You want a few threads on heating or water pipe, and you will stop if the pipe is gas. The BGS 1891 is best value at about £26.32, with dies from 1/4 in to 1 1/4 in. The listing does not print R or G. The 4.2 from 228 is not marked as United Kingdom opinion, and texts in the file report broken teeth around 1 in.

One UNC thread, or a die you own

You need one external thread on mild-steel bar or a UNC fastener. The Unifizz stock includes a 1/2-13 UNC die at about £19.56. The line is 5.0 from 8, with three thin texts, so it does not lead. If you already own a round die, use a CoCud holder only when the outside diameter sits in the printed band, and count the shared 17 reviews once.

Common questions about die stocks

Which die stock is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the ALETO 20 mm and 25 mm conduit set at about £39.99. It scores 77, the highest of the seven amazon.co.uk listings read on 19 October 2026, with 4.5 from 76 reviews and UK text about cuts on metal conduit. The title names both sizes, with guides and dies. The listing does not print a pitch. Some UK reviews say the thread was too small for the coupling, and you still need a separate pipe vice.
How much does a die stock cost on amazon.co.uk?
On 19 October 2026 the seven amazon.co.uk listings ran from about £3.35 to about £39.99. MACHSWON, with a 3/8-16 UNC die, is about £3.35. CoCud holders without a die are about £14.99, about £19.39 and about £26.59. Unifizz, with a 1/2-13 UNC die, is about £19.56. The BGS pipe set is about £26.32. The ALETO conduit set is about £39.99. These figures are a snapshot, not a promise of the next shelf price.
What should you match before you buy a die stock?
Match the job first: a bolt or stud, steel conduit, or steel pipe. A round holder, a conduit stock and a pipe ratchet do not share dies. Then match the thread form: metric, UNC, BSP R to BS EN 10226, BSP G to BS EN ISO 228, or conduit. NPT is not a UK substitute. Match the die outside diameter, and do not mix a BS 1127 split die with a DIN 223 solid stock.
Is a die included with these die stocks?
Not always. ALETO is sold as a 20 mm and 25 mm conduit set, and the BGS 1891 lists six inch pipe dies. Unifizz includes one 1/2-13 UNC die, and MACHSWON includes one 3/8-16 UNC die. The three CoCud listings are holders only, for 31–45 mm, 36–55 mm and 47–65 mm outside diameter. An M-range on a fit line is the holder's range, not a second die. A tap named only in a bullet is not in the components line.
Can you thread gas pipe with these sets?
No. Gas work needs competence under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, regulation 3. If gastightness may change, regulation 22 requires a test and purge. Gas Safe Register says not to disturb gas-carrying parts. The BGS set does not print whether the dies are R (BSPT) or G (BSPP). A parallel G thread does not seal on the flanks. Stop if the pipe is gas, and use a competent person.
Why do two CoCud listings show the same reviews?
The CoCud 36–55 mm holder at about £19.39 and the 47–65 mm holder at about £26.59 both print 4.6 from 17, and the same two UK reviews. Those reviews mention loose screw threads and burrs, and they do not name M24–M27 or M30–M36. Count that block once. The 31–45 mm holder is a different listing, at 4.3 from 5, and the only review body in the file is marked Germany. It describes burrs in the bore.
Do you hold the pipe in your hand while you cut the thread?
No. A conduit guide and a vice or pipe clamp are part of the job. The tube is not held in the hand. For a bench clamp, see the machine vice comparison. That page is a vice, not a die stock. Call a professional for a large or stainless cut if you cannot clamp the work and name the die, and for conduit used as the earth once continuity is in doubt.

Our verdict

The top pick is the ALETO 20 mm and 25 mm conduit set at about £39.99. It scores 77, the highest here: 4.5 from 76 reviews, both sizes and guides in the title, and UK review text about cuts on metal conduit. Pitch is not printed, some UK reviews say the thread was too small for the coupling, and you still need a pipe vice. Best value is the BGS 1891 at about £26.32, the highest value-part score, with six inch dies under £30. The thread form is not printed, the 228 review bodies are not marked United Kingdom, and broken teeth are reported around 1 in. Confirm R or G before a sealing joint. Do not use either set on gas.
