An air orbital sander is a pneumatic palm tool. Air drives a pad that both spins and orbits, which a bodyshop calls dual-action and a wood shop often calls random orbital. You separate them by pad, by orbit, and by whether the listing states air use and a 1/4 inch inlet. Free air delivery at about 90 psi matters more than tank litres. A corded or 18 V random orbit sander is a different product. Nothing was sanded in a lab, and no tool is scored as the quietest or the safest. A 150 mm pad is for panels and doors. How to choose is set out in the [air orbital sander buying guide](/hub/sanders/air-orbital-sander/sub/air-orbital-sander-buying-guide).

The best air orbital sanders in detail

Draper Storm Force 150 mm air sander

Rank 1

Draper Storm Force 150 mm air sander

∼£51

Our view

The Draper Storm Force 65084 is a composite 150 mm dual-action air sander at £51.35, rated 4.5 from 68 amazon.co.uk reviews, listed at 10,000 rpm and 1.17 kg. Thirteen UK review blocks praise lower vibration than other air sanders those buyers know, a comfortable composite body, and car sanding, including one panel beater who used it hard. The same file includes a speed valve that passes air while the pad stays still unless the tool is struck, a seal leak after about two months of light use, and short runs on a compressor the buyer rates at 5 cfm at 90 psi. The amazon table does not state orbit, air consumption or the inlet, discs are not listed, and the printed dimensions of 10 × 10 × 10 mm are not plausible for a 150 mm pad. The manufacturer page, not the listing, states about 3 cfm average at 90 psi, 1/4 inch BSP and 6.3 m/s². It is the top pick here for an ordinary 150 mm palm with a UK review sample that describes real use. Skip it if you need a vacuum-ready pad or an orbit printed on the amazon title.

Pros

  • 4.5 from 68 ratings, with 13 UK review blocks on car sanding and comfort
  • Composite 150 mm body at 1.17 kg and 10,000 rpm on the listing
  • Centralised extraction claimed on the listing
  • Manufacturer page states about 3 cfm average, 90 psi, 1/4 inch BSP and 6.3 m/s²

Cons

  • UK reviews describe a valve that passes air without turning the pad, and a seal leak
  • Amazon table omits orbit, CFM and the inlet; discs are not in the box
  • A buyer on a compressor they rate at 5 cfm at 90 psi reports short runs
  • Printed dimensions of 10 × 10 × 10 mm do not fit a 150 mm pad

Best for: You want a named 150 mm composite palm for ordinary panel work and you will read the manufacturer air figure, not only the amazon table.

Less suitable: You need vacuum-ready extraction, discs in the box, or an orbit stated on the amazon title.

Common questions

Does the Draper listing include sanding pads?

The included-components line names the sander. Pads are not listed. You buy discs separately for the 150 mm pad.

What do UK reviews say about the speed valve?

One review says air passes through but the pad does not spin unless the tool is struck. Another reports a seal leak after about two months of light use.

Is air consumption printed on the amazon specification table?

No. A UK reviewer says they bought it against a 3 cfm claim and that a compressor they rate at 5 cfm at 90 psi only ran it briefly. Draper’s own page, not the amazon table, states about 3 cfm average at 90 psi.

Proster 150 mm air orbital sander

Rank 2

Proster 150 mm air orbital sander

∼£33

Our view

The Proster is listed at £32.99 as a 6 inch pneumatic palm, rated 4.5 from 46 amazon.co.uk reviews, with a bullet range of 8,000–12,000 rpm, a 1/4 inch inlet and 20 sandpapers from 80 to 320 grit. Two short UK reviews call it a well built hand machine that is easy to use once a compressor is connected, and neither review records a complaint. The specification line on the same page says Corded Electric. The title, the inlet and the 0.6–0.8 MPa bullet say pneumatic, so treat the corded line as a listing conflict and check the box before you assume a hose or a plug. Orbit and CFM are not stated. Weight is 1.3 kg and the warranty line is 18 months. Forty-six ratings and two comments are a thinner file than the Anesty’s 431, which is why the higher star does not make this the best value.

Pros

  • 150 mm pad, variable 8,000–12,000 rpm in the bullet, 1/4 inch inlet
  • 20 sandpapers in the box, five each of 80, 120, 240 and 320 grit
  • 4.5 from 46 ratings; the two saved UK reviews are positive
  • 18-month warranty line and a stated 0.6–0.8 MPa range

Cons

  • Specification line says Corded Electric while the title says pneumatic
  • Orbit and CFM are not stated
  • Only two short UK reviews in the raw sample
  • You still need your own compressor; the papers do not change that

Best for: You want a 150 mm air palm with discs in the box and a stated speed range, and you will confirm it is pneumatic before you pay.

Less suitable: You need one agreed power source on the listing, or a review file large enough to show faults as well as praise.

Common questions

Is the Proster sander electric?

The specification line says corded electric. The title, the 1/4 inch air inlet and the 0.6–0.8 MPa bullet say pneumatic. Treat the corded line as a listing error and check the box before you buy.

What pressure does the bullet state?

0.6–0.8 MPa, with a water separator. CFM is not stated, so the pressure range does not tell you the free air delivery you need.

Are discs included?

Yes. The listing says 20 sandpapers, five each of 80, 120, 240 and 320 grit, plus a wrench and a 1/4 inch interface.

SPTA 25/50/80 mm air polisher set

Rank 3

SPTA 25/50/80 mm air polisher set

∼£31

Our view

The SPTA ARPS3SET is a 25, 50 and 80 mm air sander and polisher set at £31.48, rated 4.4 from 2,445 amazon.co.uk reviews, with 15,000 rpm in the bullet and a listed weight of 1.08 kg. UK-dated reviews use it on headlamps, motorcycle parts and tight areas, and several say it draws less air than a full-size palm and does not burn paint as readily as they expected. The same reviews describe a speed control that goes flaky, a shaft that sticks so the tool only exhausts air, and one buyer who says 6 CFM is not enough. One 1 inch pad was missing, and a replacement arrived with the wrong fitting. Orbit is not stated, and the listing does not print an air-use figure even though reviewers quote about 4 CFM and 6 CFM. The review count is the largest in this set, and it belongs to a detail kit. A 150 mm door is the wrong job for these pads.

Pros

  • 4.4 from 2,445 ratings, the largest sample in this set
  • 25, 50 and 80 mm pads with polishing accessories claimed
  • UK reviews of headlamps, motorcycle parts and tight spots
  • Several buyers say it uses less air than a full-size palm

Cons

  • Speed control described as flaky, and the shaft can stick while air still flows
  • A 1 inch pad was missing for one buyer
  • One reviewer says 6 CFM is not enough; the listing states no CFM
  • Not a substitute for a 150 mm panel sander

Best for: You detail cars or bikes and you want the mini set with the largest UK review file, knowing the shaft needs oil and a working valve.

Less suitable: You are sanding full panels, or you want a speed control the reviews describe as reliable.

Common questions

Is this a full-size palm sander?

No. The listing is a 25, 50 and 80 mm set. A bullet also mentions 2-inch and 3-inch discs. It is a detail kit, not a 150 mm panel sander.

Do reviewers mention oil?

Yes. One UK review says the shaft sticks, that oil is needed, and that it can still jam. The listing does not print a daily oil dose.

Does the box include a case?

The raw file asks the question and does not answer it. Included components are listed as one air sander and accessories.

SPTA mini air orbital set

Rank 4

SPTA mini air orbital set

∼£25

Our view

The SPTA OASOSS3SET is a 25, 50 and 80 mm random-orbit air set at £25.20, rated 4.4 from 1,989 amazon.co.uk reviews, listed at 15,000 rpm and 780 g. UK-dated reviews use it in tight areas that would otherwise be hand-sanded, and they call the build decent for the price once the compressor and the fitting are sorted. Disc changes with the supplied pin work for small jobs after the spindle lock is understood. Those reviews also say the instructions are weak, the tool is noisy, and the airline tail often does not match, so you need a male 1/4 inch BSP fitting. The title claims 36 mixed grit pads and three backing plates, while a bullet says 12 grinding wheels. Air use is not on the listing; a UK reviewer treats about 4 CFM as a minimum and wants headroom. The pads will not flat a car panel, which is the job a 150 mm palm is for.

Pros

  • 4.4 from 1,989 amazon.co.uk ratings, with UK-dated reviews of tight-area work
  • Three pads at 25, 50 and 80 mm, listed at 15,000 rpm and 780 g
  • Reviewers got small jobs done once a 1/4 inch BSP fitting was fitted
  • £25.20 is near the bottom of this set

Cons

  • Title says 36 discs; a bullet says 12 grinding wheels
  • Supplied airline tail often does not match the compressor coupling
  • Instructions are weak and the spindle lock is fiddly
  • Not a panel sander; air use is unstated on the listing

Best for: You already have air and you want a light kit for spots, edges and work a 150 mm pad cannot enter.

Less suitable: You need to flat a door or a bonnet, or you want a listing that agrees with itself on the disc count.

Common questions

Will the SPTA mini flat a car panel?

The pads are 25, 50 and 80 mm. The listing presents it for tight areas, not as a 150 mm palm sander. A door or a bonnet needs a 150 mm pad.

How many discs are included?

The title says 36 mixed grit pads and three backing plates. A bullet says 12 grinding wheels. The raw file does not settle the count.

Which air fitting do reviewers mention?

A UK review says you need a male 1/4 inch BSP fitting and that the supplied tail may not match the compressor coupling. The listing itself does not print a CFM figure.

Anesty 150 mm air orbital sander

Rank 5

Anesty 150 mm air orbital sander

∼£28

Our view

The Anesty is a 150 mm dual-action air palm at £27.90, rated 4.4 from 431 amazon.co.uk reviews, the best value in this set for a full-size pad. The specification lists 10,500 rpm and a bullet says adjustable up to 10,000 rpm, so the page does not settle one free speed. The highlight claims an exhaust siphon, a dust hose, a bag and sandpapers, without a piece count, and orbit and air consumption are both missing. The raw review text is not from the United Kingdom, so it is not British shopper opinion; those comments describe bodywork and wood, one unit still effective after about six years, and one off-centre disc that vibrated. The star line itself is the amazon.co.uk figure. At 1.48 kg it is the heaviest palm here. You pay the least for a 150 mm pad in this comparison, and you cannot match a compressor from a figure the listing never printed.

Pros

  • 150 mm pad at £27.90, with 4.4 from 431 amazon.co.uk ratings
  • Highlight claims a dust hose, a bag and sandpapers
  • Variable speed is claimed, even though the rpm lines do not match
  • Non-UK comments describe bodywork use, which is not a UK quote

Cons

  • No orbit and no CFM on the listing
  • 10,500 rpm in the table and up to 10,000 rpm in a bullet
  • Heaviest palm in the set at 1.48 kg
  • Saved review text is not from the United Kingdom

Best for: You want the lowest spend on a 150 mm air palm and you will check compressor capacity yourself because the listing states none.

Less suitable: You need a stated orbit, a stated air-use figure, or review comments you can read as UK shoppers.

Common questions

Is the Anesty sander cordless?

No. The power source line says air powered. You need a compressor. The listing does not state how much air it uses.

Does the listing state air consumption?

No CFM figure is in the specification table or the bullets. You cannot match a compressor from a number this listing never printed.

Are the written reviews in the raw file from the UK?

The star line is the amazon.co.uk figure, 4.4 from 431. The review text saved in the raw file is from other countries, so it is not British shopper opinion.

RUNQIN AT-980 125 mm air sander

Rank 6

RUNQIN AT-980 125 mm air sander

∼£24

Our view

The RUNQIN AT-980 is a 125 mm pneumatic palm at £23.88, rated 4.3 from 38 amazon.co.uk reviews, listed at 10,000 rpm. A bullet gives a 3/16 inch eccentricity and 8 cfm, and the specification table does not repeat the air figure. Reviewers in that small file used it for flatting paint, and one calls it a good little sander that has run for a long time. The same file says it fades after about a minute and a half on that buyer’s compressor, and they want a large compressor for more than a very small job. The box is the sander, an air inlet and a wrench, with no discs listed and no dust extraction stated. Weight is 1.16 kg on the table and about 1,200 g in a bullet. You are at the bottom of the price list for a 125 mm pad, and the fade report is the limit on treating 8 cfm as a settled workshop figure.

Pros

  • 125 mm pad at £23.88, the lowest shelf price in this set
  • Bullet states 10,000 rpm, a 3/16 inch eccentricity and 8 cfm
  • Reviewers used it for flatting paint and one reports long running
  • Air inlet and a wrench are listed in the box

Cons

  • Fades after about a minute and a half on one reviewer’s compressor
  • 8 cfm is a bullet, not a specification-table line
  • No discs and no dust extraction stated
  • 38 reviews is a small sample beside the mini kits

Best for: You want a cheap 125 mm air palm for small paint-flatting jobs and you already have a compressor that can hold the air the bullet claims.

Less suitable: You need discs in the box, a stated dust path, or a long run on a small compressor.

Common questions

Does the RUNQIN AT-980 need a compressor?

Yes. The listing power source is air powered. One UK review says it fades after about a minute and a half on that buyer’s compressor, and they want a larger compressor for more than a very small job.

Are sanding discs in the box?

The included-components line lists the sander, an air inlet and a wrench. It does not list discs. The title says the tool comes with a pad.

What air use does the listing state?

A bullet states 8 cfm. There is no separate consumption line in the specification table, so treat 8 cfm as a bullet claim, not a settled workshop figure.

Ingersoll Rand 4151-HL

Rank 7

Ingersoll Rand 4151-HL

∼£203

Our view

The Ingersoll Rand 4151-HL is a 6 inch vacuum-ready random orbital air sander at £202.54, rated 4.2 from 45 amazon.co.uk reviews, listed at 12,000 rpm and 870 g. The title includes a hook-and-loop pad and does not state the orbit. The manufacturer UK table lists this model at 5 mm; that is the manufacturer table, not the amazon row. One UK review says it might do for polishing but lacks power for sanding. Other reviews in the file are not from the United Kingdom and mention high air use, noise, vibration on long sessions, a missing pad, and a speed adjuster that cracked after long service on an earlier tool. The included-components line says mechanical ratchets and pawls, which conflicts with the sander title. It is the highest price in this set, and the amazon page does not tell you the orbit you are paying for.

Pros

  • 6 inch vacuum-ready hook-and-loop palm at 12,000 rpm and 870 g
  • Manufacturer UK table lists a 5 mm orbit for this model
  • 4.2 from 45 amazon.co.uk ratings and a one-year warranty with receipt
  • One non-UK owner reports an earlier example lasting about 10 years in a bodyshop

Cons

  • Highest price here at £202.54, and the amazon title does not state the orbit
  • The only UK review in the file says it lacks power for sanding
  • Included-components line says mechanical ratchets and pawls; a review says the pad was missing
  • Non-UK reviews cite high air use, noise and vibration on long sessions

Best for: You want Ingersoll Rand’s general-purpose orbit from the manufacturer table and you will verify the pad is in the box.

Less suitable: You need the orbit printed on the amazon title, or the UK review’s sanding power is the job you are buying for.

Common questions

Does the amazon title state the orbit?

No. It states a 6 inch vacuum-ready random orbital sander at 12,000 rpm. Orbit is not in the title or bullets. The manufacturer UK table lists this model at 5 mm. That figure is not an amazon line.

Is a pad included?

The title says with a hook-and-loop pad. The included-components line says mechanical ratchets and pawls. One review says the pad was missing. Check the box.

What does the UK review in the raw file say?

One UK review says it might do for polishing but lacks power for sanding. Other reviews in the file are not from the UK.

Ingersoll Rand 4152-HL

Rank 8

Ingersoll Rand 4152-HL

∼£158

Our view

The Ingersoll Rand 4152-HL is a 6 inch vacuum-ready air sander at £158.17, rated 4.2 from 37 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the title states a 2.5 mm orbit, 12,000 rpm, a hook-and-loop pad and a lube-free motor, at 870 g. No United Kingdom review is in the raw sample, so the comments are not British shopper quotes. Buyers who wanted the smaller orbit for polishing or prep say it does that job, which is why some chose it over a standard orbit. The same sample says a vacuum port plug was not included, and one reviewer found air use under load higher than the figure they had been quoted. The amazon listing does not print CFM. The manufacturer UK table states about 8 cfm average for this family, which is not the same as writing that figure onto the amazon specification line. You pay for a title that names the fine orbit and lube-free, and you still need an external vacuum plus air delivery the listing itself does not state.

Pros

  • Title states 2.5 mm orbit, 12,000 rpm, hook-and-loop and a lube-free motor
  • Vacuum-ready 6 inch pad at 870 g
  • Buyers in the non-UK sample chose it for fine prep and polishing
  • One-year warranty line; manufacturer table states about 8 cfm average

Cons

  • £158.17, and the raw review sample is not from the United Kingdom
  • Vacuum port plug reported missing
  • Amazon listing does not print CFM
  • Air use under load was higher than one buyer expected

Best for: You want the fine 2.5 mm orbit named on the amazon title, a vacuum-ready pad, and a motor the title tells you not to oil.

Less suitable: You have no extractor, no compressor near 8 cfm average, or you wanted UK review text for this model.

Common questions

What orbit does the 4152-HL title state?

2.5 mm, with a 6 inch hook-and-loop pad and 12,000 rpm. That is the finer scratch, not the general-purpose 5 mm orbit.

Does the title say to oil it?

The title says lube-free motor. The listing does not give a daily oil dose. Do not oil a motor the title tells you not to oil.

Are the saved reviews from the UK?

The star line is 4.2 from 37 on amazon.co.uk. The review text in the raw file is not from the United Kingdom, so those comments are not British shopper quotes.

LithiCraft 125 mm air sander

Rank 9

LithiCraft 125 mm air sander

∼£27

Our view

The LithiCraft is a 125 mm hook-and-loop air palm at £26.99, rated 3.2 from five amazon.co.uk reviews, listed at 10,000 rpm. A bullet states a 5 mm eccentric orbit and an adjustable regulator, and the specification table does not repeat the orbit. Four short UK comments call it acceptable as a budget dual-action tool if you already have a compressor, and one buyer says it is solid and works. The same comments note a little vibration, a rough housing and a valve that does not feel well made. Weight is 1.12 kg in the table and 0.89 kg in a bullet, and the included line is the sander only. Five ratings are too small a sample to separate the value comments from the rough housing, and air use, the inlet and dust extraction are all unstated.

Pros

  • 125 mm hook-and-loop pad with a bullet 5 mm orbit
  • 10,000 rpm and an adjustable regulator claimed in the bullets
  • Short UK comments call it workable if a compressor is already connected
  • Shelf price £26.99

Cons

  • 3.2 from five reviews, including vibration and a rough housing
  • Weight printed as 1.12 kg and as 0.89 kg
  • Sander only; no discs, no CFM, no inlet thread, no dust path
  • Orbit appears in a bullet and not in the specification table

Best for: You want a low-priced 125 mm hook-and-loop palm and you will accept a five-review file and a blank air-use line.

Less suitable: You want a UK review sample large enough to judge the valve, or a single agreed weight.

Common questions

Does it include sanding discs?

The included-components line is one 125 mm air sander. Discs are not listed. You supply your own hook-and-loop discs.

What orbit does the listing claim?

A bullet says a 5 mm eccentric orbit. The specification table does not repeat that figure, so it stays a bullet claim.

How many UK reviews are on the listing?

The amazon.co.uk line is 3.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews. The raw file has four short UK comments, including vibration and a rough housing.

How we compared

Nine amazon.co.uk listings were scored on 19 October 2026. Weights sum to 100. Stars and review counts are the amazon.co.uk figures. A UK-dated review sample counts for more than a star line whose saved text is not from the United Kingdom. There was no lab test, and no tool is called the quietest or the safest. Shelf prices run from £23.88 to £202.54.

1

Amazon evidence

35%

Star rating scaled, then review count. A UK-dated sample scores higher than a star line whose saved review text is not from the United Kingdom. A repeated defect, such as a stuck shaft, a valve that passes air, a missing pad or a leak, comes off this block. A file of five reviews cannot carry the same weight as hundreds.

2

Listing clarity

40%

Pneumatic identity that agrees with the title, a stated pad size, an orbit that does not contradict the table, stated air use, a stated inlet or pressure, a stated dust path, and a weight that does not contradict itself. A corded line on an air tool, a components line for the wrong product, or a second conflicting figure costs points.

Air orbital sander buying guide

The checks run in this order: confirm it is pneumatic, match the pad, read the orbit, then match free air delivery, the inlet and the dust path. The table is nine amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026. A corded random orbit sander is a different comparison. No tool was timed in a lab.

What is an air orbital sander?

An air orbital sander is a pneumatic palm tool. Compressed air drives a pad that both spins and orbits. A bodyshop often calls that dual-action. A wood shop often calls the same motion random orbital. This page compares nine amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026. Prices run from £23.88 to £202.54. Nothing was sanded in a lab, and no tool is scored as the quietest or the safest. The pad is the first split. A 150 mm pad is for panels and doors.

Best for

  • A garage that already has air and sands panels now and then on a 125 mm or 150 mm palm
  • Detail work on headlights, edges and spots with a 25–80 mm kit

Not ideal for

  • A weekend woodworker with no compressor, who should buy electric
  • Hours of sanding if the listing states no air use and you have no extractor

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Sizing the compressor on tank litres

Free air delivery at about 90 psi is the figure that matters. Average CFM is not free-speed consumption, and a large tank does not replace delivery the tool can actually draw.

  2. 2

Using a mini kit as a panel sander

Pads of 25, 50 and 80 mm are for spots, edges and headlights. They do not flat a door or a bonnet. That job is a 150 mm palm.

  3. 3

    Oiling the wrong motor

The 4152-HL title says lube-free. Do not oil that motor. Other vane tools in the stored UK reviews seize when they are run dry. Do not start the pad off the surface and stop it on the surface.

What to weigh up

Pad and orbit

High

Confirm the tool is pneumatic, then match the pad to the job. A 150 mm pad is for panels and doors. A 125 mm pad is for furniture. Pads of 25–80 mm are for spots and headlights only. The Draper, Anesty, Proster and both Ingersoll Rand models are 150 mm. The RUNQIN AT-980 and the LithiCraft are 125 mm. Both SPTA sets are 25, 50 and 80 mm. Read the orbit next. A 5 mm orbit, also sold as 3/16 inch, is general purpose. A 2.5 mm orbit is the finer scratch. The 4152-HL title states 2.5 mm.

Air, inlet and dust

High

Match free air delivery at about 90 psi, not tank litres. Draper’s page states about 3 cfm average for the 65084. Ingersoll Rand’s UK table states about 8 cfm average for this family. The RUNQIN bullet states 8 cfm and the specification table does not. The other listings print no CFM. A reviewer who quotes 4 CFM or 6 CFM is not a specification line.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Occasional panel sanding

You already have air and you want a named 150 mm composite palm. The Draper Storm Force 65084 is the top pick at £51.35, rated 4.5 from 68 reviews. UK reviews describe panel work and a comfortable body, and also a valve that can pass air without turning the pad. The amazon table does not state CFM.

Lowest spend on a 150 mm pad

You want the lowest price here for a full-size pad. The Anesty is the best value at £27.90, with 4.4 from 431 reviews. The highlight claims a hose, a bag and sandpapers. Orbit and air use are not on the listing, so you check compressor capacity yourself.

Spots, edges and headlights

You want pads a 150 mm palm cannot enter. The SPTA ARPS3SET is 25, 50 and 80 mm at £31.48, rated 4.4 from 2,445 reviews, the largest file in this set. UK reviews cover headlamps and tight areas. The shaft can stick, and it will not flat a door.

Common questions about air orbital sanders

Which air orbital sander is the top pick for 2026?
The top pick is the Draper Storm Force 65084, a composite 150 mm air sander at £51.35. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 68 reviews, and the listing is air-powered at 10,000 rpm and 1.17 kg. Thirteen UK review blocks describe panel sanding, and they also describe a valve that passes air without turning the pad and a seal leak. The amazon table does not state orbit or CFM. Draper’s own page states about 3 cfm average at 90 psi. Skip it if you need discs in the box.
Which air orbital sander is the best value?
The best value is the Anesty 150 mm palm at £27.90, with 4.4 from 431 amazon.co.uk reviews. It is the lowest price in this set for a 150 mm pad. The highlight claims a dust hose, a bag and sandpapers, without a piece count. The specification lists 10,500 rpm and a bullet says up to 10,000 rpm. Orbit and air consumption are not on the listing. The saved review text is not from the United Kingdom, so those comments are not British shopper quotes.
Do I need a compressor for an air orbital sander?
Yes. Every tool on this page is pneumatic. A weekend woodworker with no compressor should buy an electric random orbit sander instead. Free air delivery at about 90 psi matters more than tank litres, and average CFM is not the air the tool uses at free speed. Several listings state no CFM. A UK review of the Draper says a compressor the buyer rates at 5 cfm at 90 psi only ran it briefly. Do not assume any compressor will run these sanders.
What orbit should I look for on an air orbital sander?
Read the orbit before the free-speed number. A 5 mm orbit, also sold as 3/16 inch, is the general-purpose cut. A 2.5 mm orbit, or 3/32 inch, is the finer scratch. Ingersoll Rand’s UK table lists the 4152-HL at 2.5 mm and the 4151-HL at 5 mm. The amazon title states 2.5 mm only on the 4152-HL. The 4151-HL title does not state an orbit, so that 5 mm figure stays a manufacturer table, not an amazon line. Several budget palms in this set print no orbit at all.
How much air does an air orbital sander use?
Match free air delivery at about 90 psi, not the size of the tank. Draper’s page for the 65084 states about 3 cfm average at 90 psi and 1/4 inch BSP. Ingersoll Rand’s UK table states about 8 cfm average for the 4151-HL and 4152-HL family. The RUNQIN bullet states 8 cfm, and that figure is not repeated in the specification table. The Anesty, LithiCraft, Proster and both SPTA listings do not print CFM. Average CFM is not a promise of a long run on a small compressor.
Does the air fitting have to be BSP?
Check 1/4 inch BSP against NPT before you connect the hose. A UK review of the SPTA mini set says you need a male 1/4 inch BSP fitting and that the supplied tail may not match the compressor coupling. The Proster listing states a 1/4 inch inlet. Draper’s own page states 1/4 inch BSP for the 65084. Trade sheets often specify a 3/8 inch (10 mm) hose bore. Mixing BSP and NPT is a common leak, and the thread is often missing on the amazon specification line.
What dust protection applies when sanding wood with an air orbital sander?
A bag, an exhaust siphon or a vacuum-ready pad is a product choice, not a measured exposure. For wood, HSE guidance on cutting and sanding wants extraction, and respiratory protection of at least APF 20 for most enclosed powered sanding. HSE sheet WD7 points to Class M or H extraction and holes in the abrasive that line up. The Draper listing claims centralised extraction. The Ingersoll Rand HL models are vacuum-ready and still need an external vacuum. This page did not measure exposure.
Is a corded orbital sander the same as an air orbital sander?
No. An air orbital sander needs a compressor. A corded or 18 V random orbit sander is a different product, and those models are not scored here. A straight-line air sander is a different stroke again. If you are choosing among air sanders that are not dual-action palms, start with the air sander comparison. On this page the Proster specification line says Corded Electric while the title, the 1/4 inch inlet and the 0.6–0.8 MPa bullet say pneumatic. Treat that corded line as a listing conflict and check the box.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Draper Storm Force 65084 at £51.35. It ties the Proster on score, and it takes the award because the listing is consistently air-powered and 13 UK review blocks describe panel use, comfort, a failed valve and a seal leak. The best value is the Anesty at £27.90, the lowest price here for a 150 mm pad, with 4.4 from 431 amazon.co.uk reviews. The Proster stays off the top pick because its specification line says Corded Electric while the title says pneumatic, and the saved sample is two short positive reviews.
