Tap and die set comparison 2026

The best tap and die sets, compared.

Top pick: Zerone 110-piece Best value: Gunpla 20-piece M3–M12 – About £16.98, 4.2 from 1,831 independent reviews, and a printed coarse M3 to M12 list. One tap per size. Updated October 2026.

A tap and die set is a hand kit. The tap cuts an internal thread, and the die cuts or cleans an external thread. On amazon.co.uk the usual buyer is repairing a metric fastener, not cutting production threads. You can tell a usable set by the thread form and the pitch, a wrench that grips, cutters that cope with mild steel and aluminium, and a case that keeps the pieces. Everyday UK fasteners are ISO metric, with 60-degree flanks and the pitch in millimetres. BSW, BSF and BSP are 55-dfamily threads, and a metric die will not clean them. A printed tungsten or HSS line is a seller claim, not a measured result. Scores use stars, review volume, how complete the listing is, job fit and price, then deduct shared reviews and faults that recur. No hardness figure and no thread gauge were checked in a lab. BSW, BSF and BSP belong ttworth family and use 55-degree flanks. How to choose is set out in the [buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/tap-and-die-set/sub/tap-and-die-set-buying-guide).

The best tap and die sets in detail

Zerone 110-piece

Rank 1

Zerone 110-piece

∼£92

Our view

The title says a 110-piece carbon-steel set from M2 to M18, while the material field says high-speed steel, at £92.34 and 6.02 kg. A bullet claims five wrenches and names M18, and the individual pitches are not listed. The 4.8 from 13 ratings comes with two written reviews, both short praise, and neither describes a cut or a fault. That average is not a large sample, and it should not be read as a quality win over sets with thousands of reviews. There is no way to see from the page whether carbon steel or HSS will arrive, or which chamfers are in the case. At this price the missing pitch list and the two written reviews are the decision, not the 4.8.

Pros

  • The title range runs from M2 to M18
  • Five wrenches are claimed, plus a carry case
  • The two written reviews are positive and describe no fault
  • Package weight is listed at 6.02 kg

Cons

  • Carbon steel in the title and high-speed steel in the details
  • Pitches and taps per size are not listed
  • Only two written reviews under 13 ratings
  • £92.34 for a listing that does not resolve the steel

Best for: Only a buyer who can inspect the contents before relying on them, and who already knows the pitches required.

Less suitable: Anyone choosing by the 4.8 headline, or a buyer who wants a stated three-tap coarse set.

Common questions

Is it carbon steel or high-speed steel?

The title says heavy-duty carbon steel. The material field says high-speed steel. The listing does not resolve that.

Which sizes are in the case?

The title says M2–M18 and 110 pieces. Individual pitches are not listed.

How many written reviews are on the listing?

Two. Both are short praise. The star line is 4.8 from 13 ratings. Neither review describes a cut or a fault.

Mannesmann 32-piece M3–M12

Rank 2

Mannesmann 32-piece M3–M12

∼£19

Our view

The Mannesmann M53250-B puts 21 taps and 7 dies from M3 to M12 in a metal case, and reviewers treat that as three taps per size rather than a single chaser. Across 7,486 amazon.co.uk reviews at 4.4, people cut new threads in aluminium when they use oil, and they say the wrench grips the shank instead of spinning. The listing says CV steel, while the finish field says Wolframcarbid, so the material line is not one specification. The dies are not the split type one reviewer expected from the picture, and they do not stay clipped when the lid shuts. A 4 mm tap broke under what that reviewer called normal pressure, and another snapped in stainless. At £18.92 it is the set here with both a stated three-tap pattern and the largest review count, for occasional metric work in mild steel and aluminium rather than a daily professional driver.

Pros

  • 21 taps and 7 dies, read by reviewers as three per size
  • 4.4 from 7,486 reviews, the largest sample in this comparison
  • Metal case, and reviewers say the wrench grips under torque
  • Aluminium cuts cleanly when oil is used

Cons

  • Dies are not split and do not stay in the clips
  • A tap has snapped in a normal-pressure cut and in stainless
  • CV steel and a Wolframcarbid finish field do not agree
  • Reviewers treat it as a hobby set, not a daily driver

Best for: Occasional metric cuts and repairs from M3 to M12 in aluminium or mild steel, including a blind hole that needs more than one chamfer.

Less suitable: Daily professional use, Whitworth or British Standard Pipe, and regular stainless.

Common questions

Does it include three taps per size?

The included-components line says 21 taps and 7 dies from M3 to M12. Reviewers describe three taps per size. The seven diameters are not listed one by one.

Are the dies split?

A reviewer expected split dies from the picture and found they were not. The listing does not say they are adjustable.

What case does it come in?

The bullets say a strong metal case. The details weight is 1.25 kg. A bullet also says 1.5 kg.

Gunpla 40-piece OT569

Rank 3

Gunpla 40-piece OT569

∼£26

Our view

Sixteen taps and sixteen dies cover a coarse pitch and a finer pitch on the same diameters, from M3×0.5 and M3×0.6 through M12×1.5 and M12×1.75. At £25.60 the Gunpla OT569 carries 4.3 from 1,453 reviews, and people who rethread damaged parts call the cutters sharp for that job. A mechanic who needed the set the next day called it good for the money. The holders are the complaint that repeats: fairly poor, and enough only for occasional use. Sixteen plus sixteen is 32 pieces, and the listing does not itemise what makes the count 40 beyond the moulded case. Stainless is absent from the application list, which names aluminium, brass, carbon alloy steel, cast iron and bronze. You are paying the extra over a coarse-only set because a fine pitch is printed, and you should not expect the holders to outlast the taps.

Pros

  • Coarse and fine pitches listed in pairs
  • 4.3 from 1,453 reviews
  • Reviewers call the cutters sharp for rethreading
  • Moulded case, listed at 1.36 kg

Cons

  • Holders described as fairly poor
  • Several reviewers do not expect a long life at this price
  • The pieces that make the count 40 are not itemised
  • One tap per listed pitch, not a three-chamfer set

Best for: Occasional repairs where you already know you need a fine metric pitch as well as coarse.

Less suitable: A first set for someone who only meets coarse bolts, and anyone who wants a sturdy wrench.

Common questions

Does it include fine pitches?

Yes. The bullet lists pairs such as M6x0.75 and M6x1.0, M8x1.0 and M8x1.25, and M10x1.25 and M10x1.5, sixteen taps and sixteen dies.

What is missing from the 40-piece count?

Sixteen taps and sixteen dies are 32 pieces. The bullet adds a moulded case. The other accessories are not itemised.

What do reviews say about the holders?

Reviewers call the taps sharp for rethreading and call the holders fairly poor, and several do not expect a long life at this price.

GreeSuit 32-piece 32-SL

Rank 4

GreeSuit 32-piece 32-SL

∼£22

Our view

The GreeSuit 32-SL lists three taps on each of M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12 coarse, which is the pattern for starting a hole and then finishing it. A review names taper, intermediate and bottoming taps, and the case is described as a compact hard case with two wrenches. The 4.3 from 155 reviews is a real sample, and it is much smaller than the Mannesmann or Gunpla review counts. Reviewers call the metal cheap and soft, say the dies are not split, and one tells you to buy a Sealey set instead. The bullet claims tungsten alloy and 55 HRC bearing steel at the same time, and neither figure was measured here. At £21.86 and 990 g you are paying for the three chamfers, then treating the steel adjective as a claim. One reviewer also found no brand name on the cutters.

Pros

  • Three taps on seven coarse sizes, with pitches printed
  • A review names taper, intermediate and bottoming taps
  • 4.3 from 155 reviews
  • Compact case at 990 g, listed at £21.86

Cons

  • Metal described as soft
  • Dies are not split, so the diameter cannot be adjusted
  • Tungsten alloy and bearing steel are both claimed
  • Unbranded cutters in at least one review

Best for: A buyer who wants three chamfers on coarse M3 to M12 and will only use them occasionally.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs adjustable dies, or a named maker with thousands of reviews.

Common questions

How many taps are there per size?

The bullet says 21 taps, three of each of M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12 coarse. A review names taper, intermediate and bottoming taps.

Are the dies labelled in the size list?

The same seven sizes are repeated in the bullet and are not labelled as dies in that sentence. The title is a tap and die set.

What do reviews say about the steel?

Reviewers call the metal soft and say the dies are not split. One says to buy a Sealey set instead. The listing claims 55 HRC and tungsten alloy steel.

Gunpla 20-piece M3–M12

Rank 5

Gunpla 20-piece M3–M12

∼£17

Our view

Nine coarse taps and nine dies from M3 to M12, including M7 and M9, make this a one-cutter-per-size kit at £16.98. The 4.2 rating from 1,831 reviews is an independent sample, and occasional users describe window-handle repairs and light rethreading rather than production work. One buyer cut a thread in 20 mm unhardened gauge plate and reported no problem once the handles were tightened. The application list names aluminium, brass, carbon alloy steel, cast iron and bronze, and it does not name stainless. An M6 tap snapped while cleaning a thread, and the wrench jaws deformed on an M12 tap in steel. The case is repeatedly called thin plastic. You get a large review base for a chase set, with a real chance the holder gives up before the cutters do.

Pros

  • Named coarse pitches from M3×0.5 to M12×1.75, including M7 and M9
  • 4.2 from 1,831 reviews, a separate sample from the other Gunpla
  • £16.98 for a tap, a die, a wrench and a die holder
  • Light rethreading is what reviewers actually describe

Cons

  • One tap per size, so a blind hole has no second or plug tap
  • An M6 tap and an M12 wrench both snapped in reviews
  • Flimsy case, and handles needed tightening
  • One reviewer said it is not for steel

Best for: A one-off metric chase on a through thread in aluminium or another soft fitting.

Less suitable: New blind threads, stainless, and anyone who needs the holder to survive an M12 in steel.

Common questions

Which threads are included?

Nine taps and nine dies in the coarse sizes M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10 and M12, plus a die holder and a tap wrench.

Does the listing include stainless?

The application bullet names aluminium, brass, carbon alloy steel, cast iron and bronze. It does not name stainless.

What do reviews say about the wrench?

One review says the tap wrench snapped while using the M12 tap in steel, and another says an M6 tap snapped while cleaning a thread. Other reviewers used it for light rethreading.

Zerone 110-piece carbon steel

Rank 6

Zerone 110-piece carbon steel

∼£98

Our view

The Zerone title is a 110-piece carbon-steel set from M2 to M18 with a wrench handle and a case, at £98.12 and 6.04 kg, and the listing has no size table. Four written reviews sit under 4.2 from 22 ratings. One says it had every size they needed. One says the tap handle broke on first use. One had not really tried it, and one says all good with no detail. External and internal threads are in the title, not in a contents list you can check before you buy. This is the most expensive listing in the comparison and the one with the least specification. The broken handle is a single voice, and so is the praise, which is too little to justify the price against a specified M3 to M12 set.

Pros

  • Carbon steel is stated once, in the title, without a second steel name
  • A storage case and a wrench handle are in the title
  • One reviewer said the sizes they needed were present
  • Listed weight is 6.04 kg, so it is a full-size case

Cons

  • No pitch list and no taps-per-size line
  • The tap handle broke on first use in one of four reviews
  • £98.12, the highest price in this comparison
  • Two of the four reviews add almost no cutting detail

Best for: A buyer who already has a contents list from the seller and can return a broken handle.

Less suitable: A first metric kit, and anyone comparing it with a specified M3 to M12 set on the listing alone.

Common questions

What is actually listed in the box?

The title says a 110-piece carbon-steel metric set from M2 to M18 with a wrench handle and a storage case. There is no size table on the listing.

Can it cut external threads?

The title says external and internal threads. The listing asks the question and does not add a separate answer.

What do the four reviews say?

One calls it brilliant. One says the tap handle broke on first use. One had not really tried it. One says all good with no detail.

GreeSuit 32-piece

Rank 7

GreeSuit 32-piece

∼£23

Our view

This GreeSuit listing repeats the same seven coarse sizes with three taps each, in a heavier 1.19 kg package at £22.88. The 4.1 from 339 reviews is a larger sample than the 32-SL listing. Motor-trade sizes were used to refresh a gearbox mounting after a broken bolt, which is the occasional repair these sets are bought for. The same reviews say taps blunted after about three holes in aluminium, and that one shattered in the work. Hinge rivets were out of the holes, and the box fell apart on opening. A bullet says heat-treated to 55 HRC and another says tungsten alloy steel. You pay a little more than the 32-SL for a bigger review pile that includes a broken case and a short edge life.

Pros

  • Three taps on M3 to M12 coarse, with pitches printed
  • 4.1 from 339 reviews
  • Used to refresh gearbox threads after a broken bolt
  • A wrench is included, and a case is claimed

Cons

  • Taps blunted after about three aluminium holes, and one shattered
  • The box hinge failed, and bits fall out when the case is closed
  • Soft metal is a review theme
  • 55 HRC and tungsten alloy steel are both claimed

Best for: Occasional coarse metric repairs if you can accept a weak case.

Less suitable: Anyone cutting more than a few holes, or who needs the box to survive the first opening.

Common questions

Which sizes does the bullet list?

Three taps each of M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12 coarse. The same seven sizes are repeated without the word dies.

What happened in reviews?

One reviewer blunted taps after about three aluminium holes and shattered one. Another said the hinge rivets were out and the box fell apart. Others used it to refresh gearbox threads.

What hardness is claimed?

A bullet says heat-treated to Rockwell 55 HRC, and another bullet says tungsten alloy steel.

Faankiton 110-piece M2–M18

Rank 8

Faankiton 110-piece M2–M18

∼£84

Our view

The bullets list 35 taper taps, 35 plug taps and 35 dies from M2 to M18, including fine pitches, at £83.99 and 5.9 kg. That is two chamfers, not the UK taper, second and plug trio. Two tap wrenches, two die wrenches and a T-handle for M3 to M6 are named. Technical details say tungsten steel, a bullet says carbon steel, and the included-components field says carbide rotary burrs. The 4.1 from 303 reviews shares 33 openings with the 20-piece listing, so the rank of 5 in Taps and Dies is a catalogue line, not a test of this box. A flattened tap and a missing M4 in that text cannot be pinned on these 110 pieces. You would be paying large-box money for a size list the reviews do not confirm.

Pros

  • Wide listed range, M2 to M18, with fine pitches written out
  • Taper and plug taps are stated, plus several wrench sizes
  • Storage case, listed at 5.9 kg
  • The size list is more complete than the other 110-piece titles

Cons

  • No intermediate or second tap is listed
  • Carbon steel, tungsten steel and carbide rotary burrs all appear
  • 33 review openings match the 20-piece ASIN
  • £83.99 against a sample that is not clearly this box

Best for: Someone who has checked the printed size list against bolts they already own, and who accepts two chamfers.

Less suitable: A first kit, a Whitworth job, and anyone reading the star line as 303 tests of this case.

Common questions

Does it have three taps per size?

The bullet says 35 taper taps and 35 plug taps, plus 35 dies. It does not mention a second or intermediate tap.

Bullets say carbon steel, technical details say tungsten steel, and the included-components field says carbide rotary burrs.

Thirty-three review openings are the same text as the Faankiton 20-piece listing. Do not add the two counts.

Faankiton 20-piece M3–M12

Rank 9

Faankiton 20-piece M3–M12

∼£15

Our view

Nine taps and nine dies cover coarse M3 to M12, including M7 and M9, with a tap wrench and a 25 mm die wrench, at £14.99 and 660 g. The 4.1 from 298 reviews overlaps the 110-piece listing: 33 openings are the same text, so this is not a separate test of the blue 20-piece box. In that shared text an M10 thread was recut so a new bolt fitted, and a workshop buyer called it worth the money for a bike. The same text describes a tap flattened on a DPF job, a missing M4, a T-handle that snapped, and size stamps that are hard to read. Bullets say carbon steel and HRC 56, while the details say bearing steel, and a bullet claims thin stainless. At this price you are buying a one-tap coarse set whose reviews cannot be separated from another ASIN.

Pros

  • Coarse sizes named, including M7 and M9
  • Low listed price, £14.99, at 660 g
  • Shared reviews include a successful M10 repair
  • Case, tap wrench and die wrench are in the bullets

Cons

  • Review text is shared with the 110-piece ASIN
  • That text includes a missing M4, a flattened tap and a snapped T-handle
  • Carbon steel, bearing steel and HRC 56 do not agree
  • One tap per size, and the stamps are hard to read

Best for: A cheap coarse chase if you check that every listed size is in the case on arrival.

Less suitable: Anyone treating 298 reviews as proof of this exact box, or a stainless or DPF job.

QWORK 12-piece M6–M12

Rank 10

QWORK 12-piece M6–M12

∼£10

Our view

This 12-piece QWORK set stops at M6 to M12, so there is no M3, M4 or M5, at £9.99 and 410 g. The 4.0 from 282 reviews is the same text as the QWORK 40-piece ASIN, and a sentence in that text is not proven to describe this smaller box. The shared comments that can be read at all talk about M6 holes on a gate and an M8 thread on a copper tube. They also say the edges round off on hardened steel, while ordinary steel and aluminium were described as fine. A tap-holder thread failed in that text, and one set did one job and then fell apart. The title says bearing steel at HRC 53, which was not measured. You are looking at the cheapest listing here, limited to the larger coarse sizes, with no independent review sample.

Pros

  • Lowest price in the comparison, £9.99
  • Small case, 410 g, with a tap wrench and a die holder
  • Shared text includes light M6 and M8 work
  • The bearing-steel claim is a single line, not two steels

Cons

  • No M3, M4 or M5, and the pitches are not listed
  • The 282 reviews are the same block as the 40-piece QWORK
  • Shared text describes rounded edges and a failed holder thread
  • Taps per size are not stated

Best for: A first try at M6 to M12 only, if you already own the smaller taps.

Less suitable: A complete M3 to M12 kit, hardened steel, and anyone adding this review count to the other QWORK.

Common questions

Which sizes are in this set?

The listing says a 12-piece metric set from M6 to M12. It does not list each pitch, and it does not include M3, M4 or M5.

What is it made of?

The title says bearing steel and states HRC 53. That figure is a listing claim.

Yes. The bullets include a storage case, a die holder and a tap wrench.

QWORK 40-piece M3–M12

Rank 11

QWORK 40-piece M3–M12

∼£21

Our view

The 40-piece QWORK title covers M3 to M12 and adds a pitch gauge, a T-handle, a screwdriver and both holders, at £20.66 and 1.34 kg. It does not list each pitch, so you cannot see whether fine threads or three chamfers are inside. The title says bearing steel at HRC 53 and a bullet says hardened tungsten alloy steel. The 4.0 from 282 reviews is identical to the 12-piece QWORK, including the best-sellers line, so the two counts are one sample. That text says ordinary steel and aluminium were fine, hardened steel rounded the tool, and a holder thread stripped. At more than twice the 12-piece price you still cannot tell the contents from the reviews. The gauge is the only clear reason to pay the difference, and only if you check the pitches when the case arrives.

Pros

  • A pitch gauge and a T-handle are named
  • M3 to M12 is claimed, unlike the 12-piece QWORK
  • Case included, listed at 1.34 kg
  • Shared text says light steel and aluminium were usable

Cons

  • Pitches and taps per size are not listed
  • Bearing steel and tungsten alloy are both claimed
  • The review text is identical to B0CFLP28F9
  • Shared complaints include a stripped holder thread

Best for: A buyer who specifically wants a pitch gauge in the box and will check the pitches on arrival.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a published pitch list, or a review sample that belongs only to this ASIN.

Common questions

Which pitches are in the 40 pieces?

The title says M3–M12. The bullets name taps, dies, a pitch gauge, a T-handle, a screwdriver and both holders. They do not list each pitch.

What material is claimed?

The title says bearing steel at HRC 53. A bullet says hardened tungsten alloy steel.

Are the 282 reviews only for this set?

The saved review text and the 4.0 from 282 line are identical to the QWORK 12-piece ASIN B0CFLP28F9. They are not two separate samples.

Ejoyous 110-piece M2–M18

Rank 12

Ejoyous 110-piece M2–M18

∼£77

Our view

The Ejoyous title claims 110 pieces from M2 to M18 in high-speed steel, with five wrenches, at £77.19 and 5.9 kg. The bullets do not list each tap and die. Four written reviews sit under a 3.9 average from 29 ratings. One hobby user described thick handles, a tidy moulded tray and a new thread in a broken axle, and mentioned paying about £40, which is not today's listing price. Another said half the bits fell out on opening. One review is only the word Good. The HSS line is a listing claim, not a measured result. You are paying large-box money for a thin written sample and a case that did not hold its contents in one report.

Pros

  • One detailed review describes a successful axle thread and sturdy handles
  • High-speed steel is claimed in one voice, not two conflicting steels
  • Five wrenches are claimed
  • That same reviewer mentions a moulded tray

Cons

  • 3.9 from 29 ratings, with only four written reviews
  • Half the bits fell out in one report
  • Pitches are not listed
  • A comment about an older price does not match the £77.19 listing

Best for: A buyer who will open the case on arrival and return it if the pieces are loose.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a published size list or a large review sample at this price.

Common questions

Which pitches are included?

The title says M2–M18 and 110 pieces. The bullets do not list each tap and die.

Is it high-speed steel?

The bullets say high-speed steel. That is a listing claim. There is no separate material field in the technical details.

What do the four written reviews say?

One describes sturdy handles and a successful axle repair. One says half the bits fell out on opening. One is only the word Good. The average is 3.9 from 29 ratings.

How we compared

On 15 October 2026 each of the twelve amazon.co.uk listings was scored out of 100. Stars contribute up to 35, review volume up to 25, how complete the listing is up to 20, job fit up to 15, and price up to 5. Shared review blocks, snaps, poor holders and a thin written sample are then deducted. A tungsten, HSS or HRC line is a seller claim. There was no hardness test and no laboratory thread gauge.

1

Amazon stars

35%

Up to 35 points from the amazon.co.uk star line: round (stars divided by 5) times 35. The star line is not multiplied by 20, and it is not a hardness result.

2

Review volume

25%

Up to 25 points from the review count on that listing. A shared review block still receives the volume points, then a deduction. Two QWORK counts are one sample.

3

Listing completeness

20%

Up to 20 points for pitches named, taps per size stated, material lines that agree, and a case and wrench that are named.

4

Job fit

15%

Up to 15 points. Three chamfers on stated coarse M3 to M12 score highest. One tap on a named coarse list, or a title with no pitch list, scores lower.

5

Price

5%

Up to 5 points from the printed amazon.co.uk price: £9 to £20 scores 5, £20.01 to £30 scores 4, and a price over £70 scores 1.

Tap and die set buying guide

A usable set is the one whose thread form and pitch match the fastener in your hand. Piece count, a tungsten line and a 4.8 from a handful of ratings do not replace that check. The twelve listings below are metric only.

What is a tap and die set?

A tap cuts the thread inside a hole. A die cuts or cleans the thread on a bolt or a stud. Sold together, with a wrench and a holder, that is a tap and die set. On amazon.co.uk the usual buyer is repairing one metric fastener, not cutting threads all day. Thread form comes first. Everyday UK fasteners are ISO metric: 60-degree flanks, and the pitch is in millimetres, which is what BS 3643-1 and BS 3643-2:2007 describe. BSW, BSF and BSP belong to the Whitworth family and use 55-degree flanks.

Best for

  • Occasional metric repairs in mild steel or aluminium
  • A new or blind thread when you have three chamfers, a vice and cutting fluid

Not ideal for

  • BSW, BSF, BA, BSP, or regular stainless steel
  • Brakes, steering, suspension, gas or a pressure fitting

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Drilling the bolt diameter

An M6 hole is not drilled at 6 mm. FWB and Optimas charts give 5.0 mm for M6, 6.8 mm for M8, 8.5 mm for M10 and 10.2 mm for M12. A tap in an undersize hole is a common way to snap it.

  2. 2

    Mixing metric and Whitworth

These sets are metric, with 60-degree flanks. BSW, BSF and BSP are 55-degree threads. A metric die will not clean them. Identify the form before you buy, especially on a classic British vehicle or a pipe fitting.

  3. 3

    Trusting a tungsten line

Several listings claim tungsten, bearing steel, carbon steel and HSS inside one ASIN. HRC 53 to 56 was not measured. Read the steel adjective as a seller claim, and do not treat it as a result.

What to weigh up

Thread form and pitch

High

Thread form decides whether the cutter can follow the fastener you already have. Everyday UK bolts are ISO metric, with 60-degree flanks and the pitch in millimetres, which is the form in BS 3643-1 and BS 3643-2:2007. BSW, BSF and BSP are 55-degree Whitworth-family threads. A metric die will not clean them, and none of these twelve listings is a Whitworth, BSP, BA or UNC kit. If the tolerance class is unstated, RoyMech's reading of BS 3643 is 6H internal and 6g external.

Taps, material and the case

High

UK serial sets use three taps per size: taper to start, second, and plug for the bottom of a blind hole. American names swap the last two. One tap per size will chase a damaged through-thread. A blind hole wants the trio. The Mannesmann M53250-B and both GreeSuit 32-piece listings state three taps on coarse M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12. The Faankiton 110-piece listing says taper and plug only. The QWORK titles do not state taps per size. Material has to be read against contradictions.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

One crossed metric bolt

You chase one coarse metric thread a year in mild steel or aluminium, and the pitch matches. The Gunpla 20-piece is about £16.98 with 4.2 from 1,831 reviews and one tap per size. It is the best value for a through-thread, not a blind hole.

New or blind threads

You are cutting a new thread or finishing a blind hole, so you want taper, second and plug. The Mannesmann states 21 taps and 7 dies from M3 to M12, read as three per size, at about £18.92 with 4.4 from 7,486 reviews. The dies are not split.

Coarse and a fine pitch

You already know a fine metric pitch is on the fastener, not only coarse. The Gunpla OT569 lists sixteen taps and sixteen dies in coarse and fine pairs, at about £25.60 with 4.3 from 1,453 reviews. It is still one tap per pitch, and reviewers call the holders poor.

Common questions about tap and die sets

Which tap and die set is the top pick here?
The top pick in this comparison is the Mannesmann 32-piece M53250-B, about £18.92. The criterion is a stated three-tap coarse pattern and the largest amazon.co.uk review count in this capture, 4.4 from 7,486. Reviewers read the 21 taps and 7 dies as three taps per size. It is not a Whitworth, BSP or regular-stainless set, and a reviewer found the dies were not split. A 4.8 from 13 ratings on a large box does not outrank that sample.
Which set is the best value?
The best value is the Gunpla 20-piece, about £16.98, with 4.2 from 1,831 reviews. It is the lowest price among sets here with an independent review count over 1,000 and a printed coarse M3 to M12 list, including M7 and M9. You get one tap per size, so a blind hole has no second or plug tap. Reviews include a snapped M6 tap and a snapped M12 wrench. The Mannesmann already holds the top pick.
How much does a tap and die set cost on amazon.co.uk?
On the amazon.co.uk extracts for these twelve listings, prices run from about £9.99 to about £98.12. Entry sets sit at about £10 to £17, mid sets at about £19 to £26, and the large M2 to M18 boxes at about £77 to £98. A £15 to £26 coarse set is enough for one crossed metric bolt a year in mild steel or aluminium, if the pitch matches. Those figures are the printed listing prices, not a same-day re-check.
Do these sets cut Whitworth, BSP or BA?
No. These twelve listings are metric only. ISO metric threads have 60-degree flanks and a pitch in millimetres. BSW, BSF and BSP are 55-degree Whitworth-family threads, and a metric die will not clean them. BA and UNC are different forms again. FWB prints separate drill columns for Whitworth and BSP, which these sets do not cut. Identify the form on the fastener before you buy, especially on a classic British vehicle or a pipe fitting.
How many taps should a set include?
For a damaged through-thread, one tap per size can chase the existing thread. A blind hole, or a thread you are cutting new, wants the UK trio: taper to start, second, and plug to finish at the bottom. American names swap the last two. The Mannesmann and both GreeSuit 32-piece listings state three taps on coarse M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12. The Faankiton 110-piece listing states taper and plug only, not a second tap.
What size drill do you use before a new metric thread?
Drill the tapping size, not the bolt diameter. FWB and Optimas charts give M3 as 2.5 mm, M4 as 3.3 mm, M5 as 4.2 mm, M6 as 5.0 mm, M8 as 6.8 mm, M10 as 8.5 mm and M12 as 10.2 mm. An M6 hole is not drilled at 6 mm. If the tolerance class is unstated, RoyMech's reading of BS 3643 is 6H internal and 6g external. Start square, use a cutting fluid, and stop if the tap binds.
Can a budget set cut stainless steel?
Not as a regular job. Trade sellers specify cobalt for stainless, and these listings mix carbon steel, bearing steel, tungsten alloy and HSS inside one ASIN. A hardness figure such as HRC 53 to 56 was not measured. Dry tapping stainless or aluminium is a common way to snap a tap. One Mannesmann review describes a tap that snapped in stainless. Buy a tap specified for stainless if that metal is what you meet every week.
When should you stop and call a professional?
Stop if a tap has snapped and will not back out, if the thread is on brakes, steering, suspension, gas or a pressure fitting, or if you cannot tell metric from BSW, BSF, BA or BSP. A joint that should be replaced is not a job for a budget die. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a missing piece is a different complaint from a tap broken in an undersize hole. If the thread is sound, see the threadlocker comparison.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Mannesmann 32-piece M53250-B at about £18.92. The criterion is a three-tap coarse pattern and the largest amazon.co.uk review count in this capture, 4.4 from 7,486. It is not a Whitworth, BSP or regular-stainless set, and the dies are not split. The best value is the Gunpla 20-piece at about £16.98: the lowest price among sets with an independent review count over 1,000 and a printed coarse M3 to M12 list, 4.2 from 1,831, with one tap per size. The other ten have no award. A 4.8 from 13 ratings does not win one, and the two QWORK counts are one sample.
