Tap and die set buying guide

Updated: 17.10.2026

A crossed M8 on a gate bracket is what usually sends you to amazon.co.uk, where a 12-piece box at £9.99 sits beside a 110-piece box near £98. The larger number is not safer until the cutters match the bolt. This tap and die set buying guide is the checklist for the twelve metric kits in our [tap and die set comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/tap-and-die-set). It settles form, pitch and chamfers before the steel word on the title. The cutting sequence is on the [how to use a tap and die set](/hub/diy-supplies/tap-and-die-set/sub/tap-and-die-set-how-to-use) page. Peter F., DIY & tools editor, read the listings and review notes from 15 October 2026, and did not laboratory-test hardness.

Start with the thread you already have

Modern UK brackets and recent cars use ISO metric: 60-degree flanks, and a pitch in millimetres, as in M8 × 1.25. British Standard Whitworth, British Standard Fine and British Standard Pipe are 55-degree threads, with the pitch in threads per inch. A metric die will not clean a Whitworth stud, even when the diameter looks close. Protool states that split, and FWB prints separate drill tables. All twelve sets here are metric. None names BSW, BSF, BA, UNC or BSP. If the bolt is unmarked, or it came off a classic British machine or a radiator, use the metric or Whitworth page before you buy. If no tolerance is stated, RoyMech's reading of BS 3643 is a medium fit, 6H internal and 6g external.

Coarse pitch, fine pitch, and how many taps

Coarse metric covers most home jobs, from M3 × 0.5 to M12 × 1.75. A fine pitch such as M6 × 0.75 needs its own cutter, and a coarse die will not fit it. The Gunpla 40-piece at £25.60 prints both pitches. The QWORK 40-piece says M3–M12 and does not list them, so forty pieces are not a fine-thread promise. UK names are taper to start, second to follow, and plug to finish a blind hole. A US plug is often the UK second. Mannesmann M53250-B states 21 taps and 7 dies at £18.92, which reviewers read as three per size. The 20-piece sets are one tap and one die. The Faankiton 110-piece bullets say taper and plug, which is two chamfers, not the trio. The best tap and die set page applies that test to the review counts.

Read the material line twice

Trade sellers say high-speed steel for mild steel, and cobalt for stainless. These listings mix the words on one page. The QWORK 40-piece title says bearing steel at HRC 53, and a bullet says tungsten alloy. The Zerone at £92.34 says carbon steel in the title and high-speed steel in the details. HRC 53 to 56 was not measured. Tungsten on these pages is not a certificate. The Gunpla 20-piece line does not name stainless. Faankiton's bullets do say thin stainless, and a shared review describes a tap flattened on a diesel particulate filter. None of the twelve states a cobalt or HSS-E tap. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, quality is judged against the description and the price.

Case, stamps, and what £10 to £98 is buying

About £10 to £17 buys the QWORK 12-piece at £9.99, the Faankiton 20-piece at £14.99, and the Gunpla 20-piece at £16.98. About £19 to £26 holds the Mannesmann at £18.92 with 4.4 from 7,486 reviews. About £77 to £98 is the large boxes. A bigger case is not a better thread. On the GreeSuit at £22.88, reviewers found the hinge rivets out. Mannesmann dies do not stay clipped, and Faankiton stamps are hard to read. Open the case on arrival. Do not add the two QWORK counts, one shared 4.0 from 282, or the Faankiton files, where 33 openings match. For one metric bolt a year, £15 to £26 matches the job. Common questions

Do I need a metric tap and die set?
You need metric when the bolt is stamped with an M size, or when a millimetre pitch gauge seats in the thread. You need another set when the pitch is in threads per inch, including Whitworth and British Standard Pipe. All twelve boxes here are metric.
Is one tap per size enough?
One tap per size is enough to chase a damaged through-thread. It is a weak choice for a new blind hole, which wants a taper to start, a second to follow and a plug near the bottom. Match the count to the hole you actually have.
What is a taper, a second and a plug tap?
In UK naming, the taper has the longest lead and starts the thread, the second continues it, and the plug has the shortest lead so it can finish a blind hole. American catalogues often call the middle tap a plug, so a US plug is not the UK plug. A listing that only says taper and plug is not claiming the full trio.
Should I buy coarse only, or coarse and fine?
Buy coarse for ordinary bolts: M6 × 1.0, M8 × 1.25, M10 × 1.5 and M12 × 1.75. Add a fine pitch only when a gauge shows a smaller figure, such as M8 × 1.0. A coarse die will not repair a fine bolt.
Does tungsten steel mean the set is HSS?
No. On these listings tungsten, bearing steel and HSS are seller words, and more than one can appear on the same ASIN. None of that was measured. If you need a known high-speed-steel or cobalt tap, buy one that states the grade rather than a mixed adjective on the title.
Is a 110-piece box better than a 32-piece box?
Only if you can name the extra pitches. A 32-piece Mannesmann or GreeSuit pattern is three chamfers on coarse M3 to M12. A 110-piece title from M2 to M18 can hide an unlisted pitch table and two chamfers instead of three.
