The best flux core wire welders, compared.

Top pick: SSimder MIG-250 combo Best value: SSimder MIG-140 – About £79.99 with 4.4 from 270 ratings, for short gasless repairs where price and the review record matter. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A flux core wire welder feeds self-shielded tubular wire, so that process does not use a shielding-gas cylinder. These five amazon.co.uk listings are sold as gasless MIG welders, usually with stick and lift TIG as well. A 200 A title is not a 13 A promise. A typical listing does not state input current or plug type. Lift TIG on the four cheaper machines does not include a torch, so it is not a TIG kit. Mild-steel welding fume, including flux core, is an HSE health risk: use local exhaust indoors and respiratory protection outdoors. Supply, duty cycle and what is actually in the box are set out in the [flux core wire welder buying guide](/hub/soldering-and-welding/flux-core-wire-welder/sub/flux-core-wire-welder-buying-guide). The flux inside the wire provides the shield, so you do not connect a gas cylinder for that process.

Question 1 of 2

What job are you buying for?

The best flux core wire welders in detail

SSimder MIG-250 combo

Rank 1

SSimder MIG-250 combo

∼£280

Our view

The SSimder MIG-250 combo is the only machine in this set that claims both gas MIG and flux-core welding, and it also adds stick, lift TIG and plasma cutting. Its included TIG and plasma torches make the £279.99 package more complete for multi-process work than the cheaper gasless units. However, the 5.0-star rating comes from only six amazon.co.uk ratings, so it carries far less evidence than the headline score suggests. The listing also gives conflicting plasma figures and does not state a welding duty cycle or thickness range. No flux-cored wire is named in the box, and the seller explicitly says the DC machine does not weld aluminium. It is a specialist choice when gas MIG and plasma cutting are both genuinely required, rather than the best general flux-core purchase.

Pros

  • Only compared listing claiming both gas MIG and flux-core welding
  • Plasma, lift TIG and stick functions included
  • TIG and plasma torches listed in the box
  • Manual and synergic MIG control claimed

Cons

  • Only six amazon.co.uk ratings
  • Conflicting plasma-cut claims and no stated duty cycle
  • Flux-cored wire is not listed as included
  • Seller says it does not weld aluminium

Best for: A buyer who specifically needs gas MIG, flux core and plasma cutting in one portable unit.

Less suitable: A first gasless welder, aluminium work or anyone choosing mainly by review evidence and value.

Common questions

Does the seller say it welds aluminium?

No. The seller says the machine is DC only, does not weld aluminium, and does not have high-frequency TIG.

Is flux-core wire included?

No spool is named in the included-components line. The list names the welder, MIG torch, electrode holder and ground clamp, plasma cutting torch and TIG torch, plus an air regulator and gas fitting in the bullets.

What plasma cut does the seller claim?

One bullet says slicing up to 10 mm. Another says a clean cut of 1/2 inch (12 mm) and a severance cut of 5/8 inch (16 mm). Both figures are stored. Welding thickness and duty cycle are not stated.

HITBOX HBM200

Rank 2

HITBOX HBM200

∼£100

Our view

The HITBOX HBM200 is our conditional top pick for occasional gasless mild-steel work, with 4.4 stars from 573 amazon.co.uk ratings and a one-knob synergic control. Unlike several rivals with a 200 A name, its listing also states an effective welding current of 140 A, which gives a more realistic basis for comparison. The printed duty-cycle line reads 60%-140A at 40 °C; that wording is not especially polished, but it is still more disclosure than the other gasless-only listings provide. At 3.56 kg and 28 × 15 × 19 cm, it is easy to move between a bench and a repair site. A 0.5 kg spool of 0.8 mm wire is included, although the TIG torch and UK plug specification are not clearly stated. Choose it for portable, short-session work, not because the title alone promises 200 A or because it can run gas MIG.

Pros

  • 4.4 stars from 573 amazon.co.uk ratings
  • Effective 140 A figure stated alongside the 200 A title
  • Printed duty-cycle line at 40 °C
  • Light 3.56 kg body with 0.8 mm wire included

Cons

  • No gas MIG capability claimed
  • UK plug type is not stated
  • Lift TIG torch is not named in the included list

Best for: Portable, occasional gasless welding on mild steel where simple synergic adjustment is useful.

Less suitable: Gas-shielded MIG, aluminium work or buyers who require a clearly documented 13 A input.

Common questions

What current does the seller actually state?

The title says 200 A and the range is 30–200 A. The same bullets say the actual effective welding current is 140 A, with a duty-cycle line printed as 60%-140A at 40 °C.

How much does the listing say it weighs, and is it a gasless machine?

Item weight is 3.56 kg and dimensions are 28 x 15 x 19 cm. The seller describes it as a gasless flux-core welder and includes 0.5 kg of 0.8 mm wire.

Does the seller say it welds aluminium?

No. Aluminium appears only as a question heading. The use line names thin steel, stainless steel or thicker materials. One UK review claims aluminium is possible; that is a review, not the specification.

SSimder MIG-140

Rank 3

SSimder MIG-140

∼£80

Our view

The SSimder MIG-140 is the best-value option here for occasional gasless work, combining a £79.99 price with 4.4 stars from 270 amazon.co.uk ratings. UK reviewers mention practical jobs including sills and exhaust brackets, which is more useful evidence than a large amperage number on its own. The seller states 140 A, 240 V and a 5.68 kg weight, while the supplied E71T-GS spool lets you begin with flux-cored wire once you have suitable PPE. There is no gas port claim, so this is a gasless machine rather than a route into conventional gas MIG. The listing does not publish a duty cycle or plug specification, and the TIG torch is sold separately. It suits short repair sessions where price and a broader review record matter more than documented continuous output.

Pros

  • 4.4 stars from 270 amazon.co.uk ratings
  • Competitive £79.99 listed price
  • Flux-cored wire supplied
  • Reviewers report use on sills and exhaust brackets

Cons

  • No stated duty cycle or plug specification
  • No gas MIG capability claimed
  • Lift TIG torch and helmet are not listed as included

Best for: Occasional home and vehicle repair where a low purchase price and established review record are priorities.

Less suitable: Long high-output runs, gas-shielded MIG or buyers who need a documented 13 A supply requirement.

Common questions

Does the seller say it needs a gas cylinder?

No. The seller says gasless flux core means no gas cylinder, and the kit includes a spool described as 1 lb of E71T-GS wire.

Is a TIG torch or a helmet in the box?

The seller says the TIG torch is purchased separately. A helmet is not in the included-components line, and UK reviews say none was in the box.

What output and weight are stated?

The seller states 140 A and 240 V. Item weight is 5.68 kg and dimensions are 28 x 18 x 35.6 cm. Wattage is stated as 3 kW. Duty cycle is not stated.

HITBOX HBM1200

Rank 4

HITBOX HBM1200

∼£150

Our view

The HITBOX HBM1200 offers gasless MIG, ARC and optional lift TIG in a larger 6.84 kg package, with seller-stated MIG capacity from 0.8 to 5 mm. Its synergic control may reduce the amount of initial adjustment, and the kit includes 0.8 mm flux-cored wire, tips and five rods. The 4.2-star average from 157 amazon.co.uk ratings gives it a meaningful review base, but the feedback is less consistent than for the HBM200. Buyers repeatedly criticise the supplied wire and sparse manual, both of which matter when you are learning to feed wire cleanly. The listing does not label a duty cycle, and the TIG torch, helmet and plug type are not stated as included. At £149.99, it needs its wider stated thickness range to matter to you; otherwise the cheaper gasless machines present a clearer value case.

Pros

  • Gasless MIG, ARC and lift TIG modes
  • Seller states a 0.8–5 mm MIG range
  • Synergic control claimed
  • Wire, tips and five rods included

Cons

  • Included wire and manual attract repeated criticism
  • No clearly labelled duty cycle
  • TIG torch, helmet and plug type are not stated as included

Best for: Buyers who want a gasless three-process machine and value the seller's wider stated thickness range.

Less suitable: First-time users expecting detailed instructions, gas MIG or strong value at the listed £149.99 price.

Common questions

Which metals and thicknesses does the seller list?

The seller lists carbon steel, iron, galvanised steel and copper, and stainless only in TIG with a torch that is not included. Stated ranges are MIG 0.8–5 mm, ARC 1–6 mm and TIG 1–4 mm.

Is the duty cycle stated?

No. A technical field prints 92@60% under Performance description and does not label it as duty cycle. The title says 200 A without a numeric range in the technical table.

What is in the box?

The seller lists a MIG torch, ground clamp, welding clamp, brush, four nozzles, 0.8 mm flux-cored wire, five rods and a manual. A helmet is not listed. One review mentions an American plug; the listing does not state the plug.

PLASMARGON MIG-200

Rank 5

PLASMARGON MIG-200

∼£70

Our view

At £69.99, the PLASMARGON MIG-200 puts gasless MIG, stick and optional lift TIG into a compact 230 V package for occasional repair work. The seller states a 0.8–4 mm MIG range and includes a small spool of 0.8 mm flux-cored wire, so the basic MIG setup is present. Its 4.1-star average from 58 amazon.co.uk reviews is respectable for the price, but it is the weakest review signal in the gasless-only group here. Wire feeding is the recurring concern, and some reviewers also report that the supplied mask was absent or unusable; no mask appears in the listed box contents. The TIG function also needs a separately purchased torch, while the duty cycle and UK plug type are not stated. This is therefore a low-cost route into short gasless jobs, rather than a machine to choose on the strength of its 200 A name alone.

Pros

  • Lowest listed price in this comparison
  • Gasless MIG, stick and lift TIG capability
  • 0.8 mm flux-cored wire included
  • Seller states a 0.8–4 mm MIG range

Cons

  • Wire feeding is a recurring review criticism
  • Duty cycle and plug type are not stated
  • Lift TIG torch and welding helmet are not listed as included

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers doing short, occasional mild-steel repairs with gasless wire.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs documented duty-cycle performance, gas MIG or dependable wire feeding from the outset.

Common questions

Does this listing include a lift TIG torch?

No. The seller says lift TIG can be added separately. The included parts are the welder, earth clamp, MIG torch, electrode holder, 0.8 mm flux-cored wire, brush and a users guide.

What welding thickness does the seller state?

The seller states 0.8–4 mm for the gasless MIG description, 1–5 mm for MMA at 20–200 A, and 1–3 mm for lift TIG. No duty cycle is stated.

Is a welding mask listed in the box?

No. The included-components line does not name a mask. Several UK reviews say a mask was missing or not usable.

How we compared

We compared five flux core wire welder listings on amazon.co.uk. Scores use the listing data and review signals captured for this set. They are editorial comparison scores, not laboratory weld tests, and title amperage is not treated as measured output. A 5.0 from six ratings does not outrank a 4.4 from several hundred. None of the five states input current or plug type, so no machine is scored as safe on a 13 A socket. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Amazon rating and review depth

35%

Star rating is read with the number of ratings. A 5.0 from six ratings does not outrank a 4.4 from several hundred.

2

Stated process, current and duty cycle

25%

The score rewards a clear gasless claim, a stated effective current, and a duty-cycle line that is actually labelled. An unlabelled field is not converted into a percentage. Lift TIG without a torch is not scored as a TIG kit.

3

Value at the listed price

20%

Value is judged inside this set, from about £69.99 to £279.99. A low price helps only when the review record and the stated job still hold up.

4

Review sentiment

20%

Reports of usable mild-steel repairs help. Repeated wire-feed faults, a poor included spool, a missing helmet, or conflicting cut figures reduce the score.

Flux core wire welder buying guide

Choose the supply and the duty cycle before the star rating. Then check which process is actually in the box, which wire the feeder can take, and whether a helmet is included. Mild-steel fume control comes before any amperage on the title.

What is a flux core wire welder?

A flux core wire welder, in the way UK shoppers search for it, is a mains inverter that feeds self-shielded tubular wire. The flux inside the wire provides the shield, so you do not connect a gas cylinder for that process. Four of the five listings here are gasless three-process inverters: flux core, stick and lift TIG.

Best for

  • Short gasless repairs on mild steel, brackets and gates
  • A buyer who will add a helmet, gloves and suitable fume control

Not ideal for

  • Full output on an ordinary 13 A socket, which these listings do not document
  • Aluminium, or a tidy thin car panel where gas MIG is the usual process

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying a 110 V listing

UK mains are 230 V. A 110 V title on amazon.co.uk is the wrong supply for a house socket. Check the voltage on the listing before you treat the amperage as usable.

  2. 2

    Reading 200 A as a 13 A input

A 200 A figure is output wording, not the current the plug draws, and it is not continuous output. None of these five states input current or plug type. Sealey’s comparable MIG140i needs at least 16 A and a 32 A supply for full output.

  3. 3

    Wrong polarity and crushed wire

Most self-shielded wire runs DCEN, electrode negative, and the packet overrides that habit. The wire is a soft tube, so tight rolls crush it. Welding over slag hides the next bead. A new 16 A or 32 A circuit, and structural MOT repairs, are jobs for a professional.

What to weigh up

Supply and duty cycle

High

UK mains are 230 V and an ordinary plug is BS 1363. None of the five listings states input current or plug type, so none is scored as safe on a 13 A socket. A 200 A output figure is not a 13 A promise. Sealey’s MIG140i, a comparable flux-cored-only inverter outside this set, requires at least 16 A and a 32 A fused supply for full output. If a machine arrives with the wrong plug, or you need a new 16 A or 32 A circuit, that is an electrician’s job.

Process, wire and fume

High

Gasless flux core is the job this page is for. Stick is claimed on all five. Lift TIG without a torch, which is the case on the four cheaper machines, is not a TIG kit. The TIG torch on those listings is a separate purchase, and a helmet is not reliably in the box. Only the SSimder MIG-250 claims gas MIG and plasma cutting, and it lists TIG and plasma torches. It also says the machine is DC only and does not weld aluminium. A 5.0 from six ratings does not outrank a 4.4 from several hundred.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Home and farm repairs

You want a light 240 V gasless inverter for brackets and gates, and you should budget for a helmet and gloves because these kits do not reliably include them. The HITBOX HBM200 weighs 3.56 kg, states an effective 140 A, and has the only printed duty-cycle line in the set. It is the wrong machine if you need gas MIG.

Our recommendation

View offer

Thicker vehicle repairs

UK reviewers mention sills and exhaust brackets on the SSimder MIG-140. At about £79.99, with 4.4 from 270 ratings, it suits short repairs where price and a review record matter. Panels around 0.7–0.8 mm are a burn-through risk, and a tidy panel is usually a gas MIG job. The listing states no duty cycle and no plug.

Our recommendation

Gas MIG and cutting together

You specifically want gas MIG, flux core and plasma cutting in one box. The SSimder MIG-250 is the only listing here that claims that mix, and it includes TIG and plasma torches, at about £279.99. Six ratings and conflicting plasma-cut figures limit confidence. The seller says it does not weld aluminium.

Common questions about flux core wire welders

Which flux core wire welder is the top pick in this set?
For occasional gasless mild-steel work in this set, the top pick is the HITBOX HBM200 at about £99.99. It has 4.4 from 573 amazon.co.uk ratings, a one-knob synergic control, and the seller states an effective current of 140 A beside a duty-cycle line printed as 60%-140A at 40 °C. It does not claim gas MIG, and the UK plug is not stated. Skip it if you need a gas-shielded process or a documented 13 A input.
How much does a flux core wire welder cost on amazon.co.uk?
Shelf prices on these five amazon.co.uk listings run from about £69.99 to £279.99. The entry band in the file is about £69.99 to £99.99. The HITBOX HBM1200 is about £149.99 in that file; a 16 October 2026 snippet showed the same ASIN at £122.99, so the shelf moves. The SSimder MIG-250 is about £279.99. Outside the set, Sealey’s MIG140i was listed by dealers that day from about £107 including VAT. These are listing prices, not a market average.
What should you check before you buy a flux core wire welder?
Check the supply first. UK mains are 230 V, and none of these five listings states input current or plug type. Then read the duty cycle at a stated current and temperature. Only the HITBOX HBM200 prints one, as 60%-140A at 40 °C. Next, see which process is actually in the box: gasless wire is the point of this page, stick is claimed on all five, and lift TIG without a torch is not a TIG kit. Wire size and a helmet you buy separately come before the star rating.
Does a flux core wire welder need a gas cylinder?
For the gasless process, no. These machines feed self-shielded flux-cored wire, so that process does not use a shielding-gas cylinder. Four of the five listings do not claim gas MIG. Only the SSimder MIG-250 claims both gas MIG and flux core, plus plasma cutting, at about £279.99 and with six ratings. Wind, fume and the look of the bead are covered in gasless wire or a gas bottle.
Will these welders run at full output on a 13 A socket?
None of these listings states that the machine runs at full output on a 13 A socket. None states input current or plug type, so none is scored as safe on an ordinary BS 1363 circuit. A 200 A figure on the title is output wording, not the current the plug draws. Sealey’s MIG140i, a comparable flux-cored inverter outside this set, needs at least 16 A and a 32 A fused supply for full output. A new circuit is work for an electrician.
What flux-cored wire do these machines take?
These bullets specify 0.8 mm flux-core wire, and often 1.0 mm as well. The PLASMARGON MIG-200, SSimder MIG-140, HITBOX HBM200 and HITBOX HBM1200 include a spool. The MIG-250 does not name a spool in the box. Most self-shielded wire runs DCEN, electrode negative, and the packet overrides that habit. Use knurled rolls and light tension, because the wire is a soft tube. Grades and spool sizes are a separate buy in the flux-cored wire comparison.
Can you use a flux core wire welder on car bodywork?
Flux core can be used on thicker mild-steel patches. Practice on UK forums treats 0.7–0.8 mm panels as a burn-through risk and prefers gas MIG for a tidy panel. An MOT structural repair has to reach sound metal. GOV.UK says plug welds can replace original spot welds only when the old flange is removed, and other patches need a continuous seam. A flux-core bead does not automatically pass an MOT. Call a professional for structure you cannot match to those rules.
Do these flux core wire welders weld aluminium?
Do not assume these machines weld aluminium. The SSimder MIG-250 seller says the machine is DC only and does not weld aluminium. On the HITBOX HBM200, aluminium appears as a question heading, not as a specification. One UK review claims it is possible, and that review is not the specification. The other listings do not state aluminium. Lift TIG is also not included on the four cheaper machines, so a TIG claim on the title is not a TIG kit.

Our verdict

For occasional gasless mild steel, the top pick is the HITBOX HBM200 at about £99.99. It has the highest comparison score, 4.4 from 573 ratings, a stated effective current of 140 A, and the only printed duty-cycle line in the set. The best value is the SSimder MIG-140 at about £79.99, with 4.4 from 270 ratings and review mentions of sills and exhaust brackets. The MIG-250 is for a buyer who needs gas MIG and plasma in one box. None of these scores is a laboratory weld test, and none of the five states a 13 A plug.
