Water lilies comparison 2026

The best water lilies, compared.

Top pick: Blagdon Floating Lily 8859 – One 14 cm foam flower at about £3.49, with an underside loop and 4.1 from 267 reviews, the largest review count in this set. It is a decorative float, not a living plant. Best value: DYSWTUE 9-piece foam set – Nine EVA pieces at about £5.99, with three pad sizes and hooks on the flowers. The 4.1 average comes from 15 reviews, and the string is not included. Updated 17.10.2026.

A search for water lilies on amazon.co.uk mixes artificial EVA or floats, unnamed seed packets and named live plants. If you want a living water lily, look for a named hardy cultivar with a stated depth, spread and basket size, which is how the Royal Horticultural Society groups them. If you want colour on a barrel, bird bath, fountain or container today, choose an EVA or float with an underside hook. Foam does not oxygenate water, and it can fade in the sun. Depth bands, foam against a living plant, and the UK rules are in the [water lilies buying guide](/hub/hot-water/water-lilies/sub/water-lilies-buying-guide). Dried blue-lotus petals, sets and stem bouquets were left out.

The best water lilies in detail

Blagdon Floating Lily 8859

Rank 1

Blagdon Floating Lily 8859

Our view

The Blagdon 8859 adds one 14 cm floating flower to a barrel pond, bowl or compact water feature without requiring planting or a minimum water depth. Its underside loop lets you tether it away from a fountain intake, although you must provide the line and weight yourself. The 4.1-star rating from 267 Amazon UK reviews is the strongest review-volume signal in this set, and the £3.49 price keeps a single-container project inexpensive. Despite the listing's plastic wording, the specifications and buyer comments indicate a lightweight EVA-foam construction rather than a rigid ornament. Foam can fade or collect algae outdoors, so it should not be treated as a permanent substitute for a living plant. One reviewer also reported tiny clown killifish entering a seam, making careful inspection essential before aquarium use. It is our top pick for a simple decorative float, not for growing a genuine water lily.

Pros

  • Compact 14 cm diameter suits bowls and barrel ponds
  • Underside loop allows tethering
  • Strongest review volume in the comparison
  • Low £3.49 purchase price

Cons

  • Tethering line and weight are not included
  • Foam may fade or gather algae
  • Seams require checking around nano fish

Best for: Adding one anchored decorative flower to a barrel pond, patio bowl or small water feature.

Less suitable: Anyone seeking a living plant, biological pond benefits or an unchecked float for a nano-fish aquarium.

Common questions

Does the Blagdon Floating Lily have a hook underneath for anchoring?

Yes, it includes an integrated loop on the underside so you can attach your own fishing line or small weight to stop wind or birds moving it.

Is the Blagdon Floating Lily made of hard plastic or foam?

Although the listing title states Plastic Plant, the specifications list EVA foam for the container material and multiple UK reviewers note that the flower and pad are made of lightweight foam.

Can it be used in an indoor aquarium with very small nano fish?

Inspect the seams carefully before aquarium use. One UK reviewer reported that two tiny clown killifish swam into a seam gap and became trapped.

DYSWTUE 9-piece foam set

Rank 2

DYSWTUE 9-piece foam set

Our view

This nine-piece set spreads six EVA pads and three white flowers across a small pond rather than concentrating the decoration in one float. The 10, 15 and 18 cm leaf sizes let you vary the layout, while rear hooks on the flowers provide a way to tether them near moving water. At £5.99, it supplies substantially more surface pieces than the single Blagdon and is our best-value choice. UK buyers have also used the pads as temporary spring shelter while living water lilies establish, but the foam does not oxygenate water or replace a healthy planting scheme. Its 4.1-star rating is based on only 15 reviews, so the evidence is much thinner than for Blagdon or ZHIQIN. The light 20 g pack may move readily in wind or around a pump unless secured. Choose it for inexpensive temporary cover and decoration, provided you accept that string is not supplied.

Pros

  • Nine pieces for £5.99
  • Three leaf diameters suit varied layouts
  • Flower hooks allow tethering
  • Useful as temporary surface cover

Cons

  • Only 15 Amazon UK ratings
  • Very light pieces can drift
  • String and weights are not included

Best for: Budget decoration and temporary surface shelter in mini ponds, barrels and small water features.

Less suitable: Buyers expecting a live plant, durable ecological cover or a complete anchoring kit.

Common questions

What leaf sizes are included in the DYSWTUE 9-piece set?

The pack contains six dark-green EVA lily pads split into two 10 cm leaves, two 15 cm leaves and two 18 cm leaves, plus three white lotus flowers.

Does the DYSWTUE set include string for the flower hooks?

No. Each lotus flower has a small rear hook for tethering or linking flowers together, but you must supply your own nylon line or string.

Can these foam pads shelter pond fish while real water lilies grow?

UK buyers report using the floating EVA pads to give fish surface cover and shade early in the season while live pond plants establish. The foam does not oxygenate the water.

ZHIQIN 26-piece pond set

Rank 3

ZHIQIN 26-piece pond set

∼£11

Our view

The ZHIQIN bundle fills a family garden feature with 10 leaves, four coloured flowers, six frogs and six dragonflies in one 26-piece pack. Its 18 cm maximum pad size and £10.99 price suit a broader decorative scene better than a restrained bowl arrangement. A 4.0-star rating from 168 reviews gives it a meaningful UK feedback base, and reviewers report that flattened foam flowers can recover after floating on water. The numerous lightweight parts still need selective placement or tethering near a fountain because spray and pump suction can gather them together. Buyer feedback also indicates that algae and cleaning can damage the coloured finish, so the set is not maintenance-free. Frog colours and poses are random, which limits control over the final appearance. It works best where playful variety matters more than botanical realism or long-term colour retention.

Pros

  • Large 26-piece decorative bundle
  • Includes four flower colours and wildlife figures
  • Substantial 168-review feedback base
  • Flattened foam can recover on water

Cons

  • Many light pieces can crowd pumps
  • Finish may suffer when algae is scrubbed away
  • Frog colours and poses are random

Best for: Playful family pond displays, larger tubs and water features with room to spread selected pieces.

Less suitable: Minimalist small bowls, realistic planting schemes or untethered use beside a pump intake.

Common questions

What if the ZHIQIN lotus flowers arrive flat from the box?

Several UK reviewers note that although the foam flowers arrive flattened in transit, placing them on the water surface allows them to absorb moisture and puff back into shape.

Can the ZHIQIN lily pads be used next to an active fountain jet?

Only if weighted or strung away from the pump. Untethered pads are light enough to be drawn into fountain intakes or pushed under the spray.

Are the frog colours and shapes fixed in every pack?

No. The manufacturer states that the six soft plastic frog figurines are sent in random colours and poses.

QUOZUO 10-piece foam flowers

Rank 4

QUOZUO 10-piece foam flowers

∼£12

Our view

QUOZUO provides 10 complete flowers on attached pads, giving you more blooms and fewer loose leaf-only pieces than the ZHIQIN or DYSWTUE sets. Diameters of 11, 12 and 15 cm make the pack flexible enough for several small containers or one colourful display. Every flower has a rear hook, but line and weights must be bought separately if wind or a fountain could move them. The listing advises a 40–60°C warm-water soak for creases, and UK feedback suggests minor transit bends can relax even though badly distorted pads may remain uneven. At £11.99, it is the most expensive artificial listing here and has a middling 3.9-star rating from 88 reviews. Styrofoam and hand-glued construction can fade or look less natural at close range. This is the strongest fit for a flower-heavy event or fountain display, rather than durable year-round pond planting.

Pros

  • Ten flower-and-pad pieces in four colours
  • Three compact diameters
  • Rear hook on every flower
  • Warm water can ease minor transit creases

Cons

  • Highest artificial-set price in the comparison
  • String and weights are not included
  • Styrofoam may fade or remain creased

Best for: Colourful multi-flower displays across fountains, pools or several patio containers.

Less suitable: Natural-looking permanent ponds or buyers who want loose pads, wildlife figures or live growth.

Common questions

How do you flatten QUOZUO foam flowers that arrive creased in the post?

The manufacturer advises soaking deformed flowers in 40–60°C warm water. UK buyers confirm warm water relaxes minor petal creases, though heavily bent pads may not fully flatten.

What sizes and colours come in the QUOZUO 10-piece bag?

You get two 15 cm white flowers, two 12 cm hot pink flowers, and six 11 cm flowers across pink, rose red and white.

Does the QUOZUO pack come with string or weights?

No. Each flower has a small hook on the back, but string and weights are not included.

KJHGDFG water lily seeds, variant B

Rank 5

KJHGDFG water lily seeds, variant B

Our view

Variant B supplies 10 unnamed aquatic seeds for an indoor germination experiment rather than an established water lily ready for a pond. The seller specifies water above 16°C, so a cold outdoor container is not a dependable year-round starting environment in the UK. At £6.86, this is 4p cheaper than Variants A and E while sharing their 3.4-star rating from only four reviews. The listing does not identify a species, cultivar, mature spread or final planting depth, which makes it impossible to match the eventual plant confidently to a small pond. UK feedback also says printed instructions are absent, leaving you to research scarification and early care independently. A seedling may take substantial time and still not deliver the named hardy characteristics a nursery plant provides. Choose Variant B only as the least expensive speculative seed packet, not as a reliable shortcut to a flowering Nymphaea.

Pros

  • Ten seeds for a low-cost growing experiment
  • Cheapest of the three variants
  • Seller states a minimum sowing temperature

Cons

  • Species and cultivar are not named
  • Only four ratings at 3.4 stars
  • No printed instructions reported
  • Mature depth and spread are unknown

Best for: Hobbyists prepared to research and monitor an experimental warm-water germination project.

Less suitable: Anyone needing a named hardy cultivar, predictable dimensions or an immediate pond display.

Common questions

Do the KJHGDFG Variant B seeds come with printed planting instructions?

According to UK customer feedback, no printed instructions are included in the packet, so buyers need to look up aquatic seed scarification and sprouting steps separately.

What water temperature does the listing state for sowing these seeds?

The listing states that the seeds have no dormancy period and can be sown year-round provided water temperature is kept above 16°C.

Does the listing name the exact water lily species or final pond depth?

No. The botanical species, cultivar name and mature water depth are not stated in the product specifications.

KJHGDFG water lily seeds, variant E

Rank 6

KJHGDFG water lily seeds, variant E

Our view

Variant E is another 10-seed cultivation packet that requires water above 16°C before it offers any prospect of a pond plant. Its colour code distinguishes the listing option, but the captured details do not name the botanical species or explain the eventual flower, spread or depth requirement. The £6.90 price is only 4p above Variant B, while both carry the same 3.4-star score from four ratings. UK feedback on the shared listing reports no printed growing instructions, so beginners receive little guidance for germination or transplanting. Without provenance, you cannot assume the seeds will produce a hardy British outdoor Nymphaea. The low review count also provides no dependable germination-rate evidence. Variant E is therefore a speculative hobby purchase, with no clear practical advantage over the slightly cheaper Variant B.

Pros

  • Ten seeds for experimental cultivation
  • Seller states sowing water above 16°C
  • Low initial purchase cost

Cons

  • No named species or cultivar
  • No printed instructions reported
  • Only four ratings
  • No stated mature depth or spread

Best for: Experienced hobbyists specifically choosing the seller's Variant E and accepting uncertain results.

Less suitable: Beginners, cold outdoor sowing or a pond plan requiring a known hardy size and flower.

Common questions

How does Variant E differ from the other KJHGDFG seed packets?

Variant E is priced at £6.90, 4p more than Variant B, and carries colour code E on the listing, while sharing the same 10-seed count and 3.4-star rating from four UK reviews.

Can you sow KJHGDFG Variant E seeds directly into a cold UK pond in winter?

No. The listing specifies that water temperature must remain above 16°C for sowing.

Are printed growing instructions included in the Variant E packet?

No. UK reviewer feedback on the shared listing notes that no instructions are provided in the box.

KJHGDFG water lily seeds, variant A

Rank 7

KJHGDFG water lily seeds, variant A

Our view

Variant A contains 10 aquatic seeds and demands the same above-16°C sowing conditions as the other KJHGDFG packets. It costs £6.90 and shares their 3.4-star rating from four reviews, so there is little evidence separating it on performance or value. One UK buyer reported success only after seeking instructions elsewhere, while the packet itself reportedly includes no printed guide. More importantly, the listing omits the species, cultivar, mature spread and maximum pond depth. Those gaps matter because a vigorous plant can overwhelm a barrel while a tropical type may not survive a British winter outdoors. The colour code A is not enough to establish what flower or growth habit you will receive. Buy it only if you deliberately want this variant for an experiment; otherwise a named nursery plant is the more predictable route.

Pros

  • Ten seeds at a modest price
  • One buyer reported success after outside research
  • Seller states a sowing-temperature threshold

Cons

  • Botanical identity is missing
  • Instructions reportedly not included
  • Very small review base
  • Final size and hardiness are unknown

Best for: A controlled indoor seed experiment where uncertain identity and outcome are acceptable.

Less suitable: Small-pond planning, novice growers or anyone wanting predictable hardy blooms.

Common questions

What is included in the KJHGDFG Variant A packet?

It supplies 10 aquatic seeds labelled Colour A for cultivation. No aquatic basket, compost or printed instruction leaflet is included.

Does Variant A state a maximum pond depth?

No. The listing does not specify a botanical species or a mature planting depth, only that sowing water should be above 16°C.

What do UK buyers say about these seeds?

Across four ratings (3.4 out of 5), one UK pond keeper reported success after checking YouTube for instructions, one had not yet tested them, and one left a negative two-word review.

How we compared

Seven amazon.co.uk listings are on this page: four foam ornaments and three unnamed 10-seed packs. They are compared on product type, stated size, anchoring, durability notes and whether a cultivar or instructions are named. Scores use those listing facts and the amazon.co.uk star line. There is no laboratory test. The top pick and the best value follow the awards already on the product rows.

1

Product type

25%

A living plant, an unnamed seed pack and an artificial float are different purchases. Four rows are foam ornaments. Three are KJHGDFG 10-seed packs. A named nursery Nymphaea is not in this scored set.

2

Depth, spread and diameter

20%

The RHS groups live waterlilies by planting depth and spread. Foam pads in this set run from 10 cm to 18 cm, so the disc has to fit the container. Seed packs state no mature depth.

3

Anchoring and moving water

20%

Real waterlilies want still water in full sun. Foam drifts into a pump or blows out of a bowl unless a hook or loop is tethered. String is not included.

4

Durability and fish safety

20%

Foam can arrive creased, fade or gather algae. QUOZUO advises a 40–60°C soak. One UK review of the Blagdon reported clown killifish trapped in a seam.

5

Cultivar and instructions

15%

A genuine nursery plant names the cultivar and the hardy status. These three seed packs claim sowing above 16°C and do not name a species. UK reviews say printed instructions are missing.

Water lilies buying guide

These seven rows are what an amazon.co.uk search for water lilies still contains once dried petals, LEGO and cut-flower bouquets are removed. Prices are the shelf figures from 16 October 2026, from about £3.49 to about £11.99. Four rows are foam floats. Three are unnamed 10-seed packs. A named live Nymphaea is a different purchase and is not scored here. None of these seven was laboratory-tested.

What is a water lily on these listings?

On amazon.co.uk, a search for water lilies returns three different things: artificial EVA or Styrofoam floating ornaments, unnamed 10-seed packets, and named live Nymphaea pond plants from UK nurseries. This comparison keeps seven listings. Four are foam ornaments from £3.49 to £11.99. Three are unnamed KJHGDFG 10-seed packs from £6.86 to £6.90. Dried blue-lotus petals, LEGO sets and stem bouquets were left out.

Best for

  • A barrel, bird bath or bowl that needs colour today
  • A family water feature with room for several foam pieces

Not ideal for

  • A living hardy water lily with a known depth and spread
  • A nano-fish aquarium unless every seam has been checked

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Lowering a new basket to full depth

A living water lily is not dropped straight to its final depth. RHS notes start the crown under about 15–25 cm of water and lower it in stages. These seven listings do not include a basket or a named cultivar, so the depth still has to come from the plant you actually buy.

  2. 2

Expecting foam to oxygenate the pond

EVA and Styrofoam floats do not oxygenate water and do not control algae. Pads can give temporary shade while a living plant establishes. They can also fade, crease or collect algae, and they are not a substitute for a hardy Nymphaea.

  3. 3

Leaving foam loose beside a fountain

The hooks and the Blagdon loop need your own line. Untethered pieces blow out of bowls or get drawn into a pump. Real waterlilies want still water in full sun, not spray.

What to weigh up

Product type, depth and spread

High

The first split is what you are actually buying. Four listings are artificial floats: the Blagdon single flower, the DYSWTUE nine-piece EVA set, the ZHIQIN 26-piece bundle and the QUOZUO 10-piece Styrofoam flowers. Three listings are unnamed KJHGDFG 10-seed packs. A named live Nymphaea from a UK nursery is a third kind of product, and it is not in this scored set. Wider amazon.co.uk prices for those plants sat around £18.69 to £21.99 on 16 October 2026.

Anchoring, durability and the name on the listing

High

Moving water is the next check. Real waterlilies want still water. Foam drifts into a pump or blows out of a bowl unless you tether it. The Blagdon has an underside loop. The DYSWTUE and QUOZUO flowers have a rear hook. The ZHIQIN pieces can be strung and weighted. None of the packs includes the line. In a nano-fish tank, inspect seams before the float goes in: one UK review of the Blagdon reported two clown killifish trapped in a seam. Foam is not a permanent plant. It can arrive creased.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Barrel, bowl or fountain

You want one flower on a patio barrel, bird bath or small feature today, and you can tether it. The Blagdon Floating Lily is a 14 cm foam flower at about £3.49, with an underside loop and 4.1 from 267 reviews. The line and weight are not in the box, and it is not a living plant.

Family garden display

You want several colours, leaves and small figures rather than one restrained flower. The ZHIQIN set has 10 leaves, four flowers, six frogs and six dragonflies at about £10.99, with 4.0 from 168 reviews. Keep the light pieces away from a pump intake.

Warm-water seed experiment

You are prepared to germinate unnamed seeds in water above 16°C and you do not need a known hardy cultivar. Variant B is the cheapest of the three KJHGDFG packs, at about £6.86, with 3.4 from four reviews. Species, depth and printed instructions are not stated.

Common questions about water lilies

Which water lily is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick in this set is the Blagdon Floating Lily, model 8859, at about £3.49. It is one 14 cm white flower on a green pad, with an underside loop, and it weighs 20 g. amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 out of 5 from 267 reviews, the largest review count here. The listing title says plastic, while the specifications and buyer comments indicate EVA foam. It is a decorative float, not a living water lily, and the tether line is not included. Foam can fade outdoors.
Which listing is the best value?
The best value is the DYSWTUE nine-piece set at about £5.99. You get six EVA pads at 10, 15 and 18 cm, plus three white flowers with rear hooks. That is more surface than the single Blagdon, at a price still in the entry band. The 4.1 average comes from only 15 reviews, so the evidence is thinner than for Blagdon or ZHIQIN. String and weights are not included, and the foam does not oxygenate the water or replace a planting scheme.
How much do these water lilies cost?
Shelf prices in this amazon.co.uk set, captured on 16 October 2026, run from about £3.49 to about £11.99. The Blagdon single flower is £3.49. The DYSWTUE nine-piece set is £5.99. The three KJHGDFG 10-seed packs are £6.86 to £6.90. The ZHIQIN 26-piece bundle is £10.99 and the QUOZUO 10-piece Styrofoam flowers are £11.99. Named live nursery plants appeared in a wider snapshot at about £18.69 to £21.99 and are not scored on this page.
Do artificial water lilies oxygenate a pond?
No. The EVA and Styrofoam floats in this set are ornaments. They do not oxygenate water and they do not control algae. UK buyers have used the DYSWTUE pads as temporary surface cover while living plants establish, which is shade, not a biological treatment. Foam can also fade or gather algae, and scrubbing the colour is a complaint on the larger sets. A living Nymphaea is a different purchase, and about 50% surface cover is an RHS rule of thumb, not a result these foam listings deliver.
Are the KJHGDFG seed packs a hardy water lily?
The listings do not say so. Variants B, E and A are 10-seed packs at about £6.86 to £6.90, with a shared 3.4 average from four reviews. They claim year-round sowing when water stays above 16°C and state no dormancy period. They do not name a species, a cultivar, a mature spread or a planting depth, and UK reviews say printed instructions are missing. That is not a verified germination rate and not a guaranteed hardy Nymphaea. A nursery plant that names the cultivar is the predictable route.
Are water lilies banned in the UK?
Ordinary Nymphaea cultivars are legal to buy. In England and Wales it is illegal to plant listed invasive species in the wild, including floating pennywort, parrot’s feather, water-primrose, water hyacinth and curly waterweed, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In Northern Ireland, Nymphoides peltata is on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, so wild planting there is an offence. Be Plant Wise says keep pond plants in the pond, empty rinse water onto soil away from drains, and compost trimmings away from water.
How do you stop foam lilies entering a fountain?
Tether them. The Blagdon has an underside loop, and the DYSWTUE and QUOZUO flowers have a rear hook. The ZHIQIN pieces can be strung and weighted. None of these packs includes the line. Untethered foam is light enough to blow out of a bowl or to be drawn into a pump. Keep floats clear of the jet and the intake. Choosing that pump is a separate decision, covered in the water feature pump comparison. Real waterlilies want still water, not a fountain.
What water depth does a live water lily need?
The RHS groups live waterlilies by depth and spread: miniature 10–30 cm, dwarf or small 30–45 cm (spread 30–60 cm), medium 45–75 cm (spread 60–120 cm), and large 75–120 cm (spread up to 2.4 m). They want full sun and still water. None of these seven listings names a cultivar or a depth. Foam pads here are 10–18 cm and have no minimum depth. A new basket starts under about 15–25 cm of water over the crown, then is lowered in stages.

Our verdict

The Blagdon Floating Lily is the top pick: one 14 cm foam flower at about £3.49, an underside loop, and 4.1 from 267 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest review count in this set. It is a decorative float for a barrel, bowl or small feature, not a living plant, and you supply the tether.
