How to plant water lilies in a UK pond

Updated: 17.10.2026

Planting a live water lily is not a matter of dropping its pot onto the deepest shelf. The crown needs the right compost, basket and first water depth, while an artificial foam lily needs a different job: reshape it, inspect it and tether it away from the pump. This guide keeps those two tasks separate. If you have not chosen a product, start with the [water lilies comparison](/hub/hot-water/water-lilies), then identify whether you hold a live rhizome, unnamed seeds or an ornament before you follow a step. Timing, position and pond hygiene

April to September is the practical UK window. Choose full sun and still water, away from a fountain or waterfall. A living Nymphaea dislikes constant turbulence. Prepare a mesh aquatic basket, hessian, peat-free aquatic compost or heavy clay loam, washed lime-free pea shingle and bricks. A dwarf cultivar generally needs a 2-litre basket. Most standard lilies use 5–10 litres. Ordinary peat compost can float out, cloud the water and feed algae. Rinse a new plant in a separate bucket and pour that water onto soil away from drains. If you still need to match a named plant to its depth, use the water lily buying guide.

Plant a live water lily and lower it in stages

Line the mesh basket with hessian. Add peat-free aquatic compost or heavy loam, and trim damaged leaves and old roots. Set the rhizome at a slight angle, growing point towards the centre, with the crown at the compost surface. Add washed pea shingle without covering the crown. Soak the basket in a separate tub until the bubbles stop. Lower it onto bricks with about 15–25 cm of water over the crown. Nymphaea ‘Pygmaea Helvola’ may start around 8–10 cm if its instructions say so. When leaves reach the surface, remove a brick. Repeat until the cultivar is at its depth: about 10–30 cm for miniature, 30–45 cm for dwarf or small, 45–75 cm for medium and 75–120 cm for large. Do not drop a dwarf plant to the bottom because the pond is deep. Shallow barrels are in the small-pond water lilies guide.

If you bought unnamed water lily seeds

The KJHGDFG Variants B, E and A in this comparison are not ready-to-plant lilies. Each packet contains 10 unnamed seeds, and the seller specifies water above 16°C. UK feedback says printed instructions are not included. The listings omit species, germination detail, mature spread and eventual pond depth. Do not scatter them into a cold outdoor pond. If you accept the uncertainty, start them indoors above 16°C and remove any that rot. The packets name no species, so do not guess at scarification. Never release surplus growth into natural water. If you need a hardy flower, buy a named nursery cultivar.

Reshape and anchor artificial foam lilies

Blagdon, DYSWTUE, ZHIQIN and QUOZUO lilies are not planted in compost. Unpack each piece, remove loose glue and inspect seams and hooks. Let compressed ZHIQIN foam sit on the water before you decide it is permanently flat. For creased QUOZUO flowers, the manufacturer advises a 40–60°C soak. Use warm water, not boiling water, and keep plants and animals out of that container. Do not pull glued joints. A severely bent pad may stay uneven. Blagdon and DYSWTUE usually need only a gentle shape and time afloat. Tie nylon line to the loop or rear hook, add a small pond-safe weight, and leave slack for the water level. Keep the line too short to reach the pump, then run the fountain at full flow. Hooks are on the Blagdon, the DYSWTUE flowers and every QUOZUO flower. Line and weights are not supplied. The wider choice is in artificial or live water lilies.

Autumn, winter and when to call a specialist

On a hardy live lily, remove yellow and dead leaves before they decay into the water. Keep the crown at a depth where the container will not freeze solid, following the named cultivar. Divide an overcrowded rhizome when flowering declines. Tropical water lilies need protected winter care. RHS guidance refers to keeping tropical tubers at a minimum of about 10°C in damp sand. If you cannot provide that, choose a hardy plant at purchase. Lift artificial floats, rinse them and dry them before frost. Avoid hard scrubbing, because it can lift colour from foam. Call a pond specialist for a leaking liner, unsafe access, persistent fish illness or a plant you suspect is invasive.

Common questions

How deep should a newly planted water lily be?
Start with about 15–25 cm of water over the crown, on bricks or a pond shelf, then lower the basket as leaves reach the surface. Miniature cultivars can begin shallower, so follow the instructions that came with the named plant.
Can I use ordinary potting compost?
No. Use peat-free aquatic compost or heavy clay loam in a lined aquatic basket. Ordinary compost can float, cloud the pond and release excess nutrients. Top the aquatic compost with washed lime-free pea shingle, and keep the crown uncovered.
Why does a water lily need still water?
Live Nymphaea establish and flower best in sunny, still water. Fountain jets and waterfalls buffet the leaves and disturb the crown. Place the basket away from moving water, or choose a calmer planting zone in the same pond.
Can I rescue a crushed foam lotus?
Minor flattening often improves after the foam floats, or after the 40–60°C soak that QUOZUO recommends. Do not use boiling water, do not pull glued petals, and do not apply that soak to any living plant.
How do I stop an artificial lily reaching the pump?
Tie nylon line to the underside hook, add a small pond-safe weight and limit the travel so the float cannot reach the intake. Run the pump at full flow and watch the position for several minutes before you leave it.
When should I get professional help?
Get help for unsafe deep-water access, electrical concerns, a leaking liner, unexplained fish illness or a plant you suspect is invasive. A specialist can also move a heavy basket without damaging the liner or the crown.
