Sacrificial anode comparison 2026

The best sacrificial anodes, compared.

Top pick: Dairrr Fuuu 4-pack Best value: DOJA Barcelona M8 250 × 22 mm – A single magnesium rod at about £12.99 that states M8 and 250 × 22 mm, with more fit detail than the cheaper threadless rod. Updated 17.10.2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

A sacrificial anode corrodes on purpose so the steel, shaft or fitting it is bonded to does not. In a UK home the usual part is the magnesium rod in an enamelled hot-water cylinder. On a boat it is zinc or aluminium in salt or brackish water, or magnesium in fresh water. In a salt pool it is a small zinc plate in the skimmer. A boat zinc does not protect a [hot water cylinder](/hub/hot-water/hot-water-cylinder). This page keeps eleven amazon.co.uk listings read: three magnesium heater rods, six marine zinc listings and two pool plates. Only the five-pack has reviews labelled United Kingdom.

The best sacrificial anodes in detail

Dairrr Fuuu 4-pack

Rank 1

Dairrr Fuuu 4-pack

∼£23

Our view

This Dairrr Fuuu set contains four zinc skimmer plates and eight plastic ties for a salt-system pool. The bullet says the plates are 2.9 inches across and 0.24 inches thick, but the product-dimensions line is far smaller and therefore unreliable for planning fit. Its 5.0 rating from 50 reviews looks strong until you note that the twelve extracted texts are all labelled United States. Those comments include practical reminders to secure the plate, yet they do not establish performance in a UK pool. At £23.28, the four-pack offers a lower listed cost per plate than the two-pack if the bullet size is correct. It remains a pool-skimmer weight and sacrificial plate, not a universal anode for tanks or boats.

Pros

  • Four zinc plates supplied
  • Eight mounting ties included
  • Lower listed cost per plate than the two-pack

Cons

  • Dimension lines conflict sharply
  • No UK-labelled review text
  • Star rating does not prove corrosion protection

Best for: A salt-system pool owner who wants four skimmer plates and can confirm the 2.9 inch bullet size.

Less suitable: Any cylinder or marine fitting, or a basket that requires precise dimensions from the product line.

Common questions

What is in the pack?

Four zinc plates with mounting holes and eight plastic ties. The bullet says each plate is 2.9 inches across and 0.24 inches thick.

Why do the sizes disagree?

The product-dimensions line says 2.54 × 2.54 × 0.05 cm and 762 g. That is not the same as the 2.9 inch bullet.

What do the reviews cover?

Twelve texts are labelled United States. They describe salt pools, well water, and a plate lost when it was not tied in. None is labelled United Kingdom.

ZEPFJHE 16 × 200 mm

Rank 2

ZEPFJHE 16 × 200 mm

Our view

The ZEPFJHE is a short 16 × 200 mm magnesium rod listed for a hot-water tank, but the page does not state its thread size. That omission matters more than its low £8.39 price because diameter and length alone cannot confirm a cylinder fit. The colour field says “2 Pack”, while the title does not confirm that two rods are supplied. Its 5.0 rating comes from one review, and no review text is available to check installation or wear. Treat it as a possible replacement only after the seller confirms the thread and pack contents. It is not evidence of compatibility with a named UK cylinder.

Pros

  • Low £8.39 listed price
  • 16 × 200 mm dimensions stated in the title
  • Magnesium construction for a cylinder application

Cons

  • Thread size is not stated
  • Pack quantity conflicts between the title and colour field
  • Only one rating and no readable review text

Best for: A 16 × 200 mm cylinder replacement when you can confirm the thread and pack quantity before ordering.

Less suitable: Buying by dimensions alone, or replacing a maker-specific rod without checking the cylinder manual.

Common questions

What size is this rod?

The title and a bullet say 16 mm diameter and 200 mm length. No thread size, such as M8, is stated.

Is it a pack of two?

The colour field says 2 Pack. The title does not say two rods.

What do the reviews say?

The listing line is 5.0 from 1 review. This extract has no review text.

Deargooday 2-pack

Rank 3

Deargooday 2-pack

∼£20

Our view

The Deargooday pack supplies two zinc plates with ties and bolts for fitting in a salt-water pool skimmer basket. Its bullet describes each plate as 3 inches across and 1/4 inch thick, although the separate product dimensions do not agree. The listing says to replace a plate at around half worn and estimates about three years, but that lifespan is a seller claim rather than UK service evidence. All four extracted review texts are from the United States, and one reviewer had not yet established whether it worked. At £19.82, the pair is cheaper than the four-pack but should be judged by fit and actual erosion, not by the 4.9 star line alone. It is a skimmer accessory, not a hot-water cylinder anode.

Pros

  • Two plates with ties and bolts included
  • Clear skimmer-basket application
  • Replacement point described as about half worn

Cons

  • Bullet and product dimensions conflict
  • No UK-labelled review text
  • Three-year life is only a listing estimate

Best for: A salt-water pool skimmer where a zinc basket plate of the stated size is suitable.

Less suitable: Cylinder, boat-shaft or sterndrive protection, or buyers relying on a guaranteed three-year life.

Common questions

How do you fix it in the basket?

The bullet says use the supplied zip tie or bolt, inside or outside the skimmer basket, and replace the plate after about half of it has eroded, stated as about 3 years.

Which size should you trust?

The bullets say 0.35 pounds, 3 inches across, and 1/4 inch thick. The product-dimensions line says 13 × 10.49 × 3 cm and 308.44 g.

Do the reviews confirm it in a UK pool?

Four texts are in the file, all labelled United States. One says the weight looked right and they do not yet know if it works. One names a salt system and staining.

AB Tools AQ051

Rank 4

AB Tools AQ051

∼£28

Our view

The AB Tools AQ051 is a zinc shaft anode listed for a 25 mm shaft on Beneteau and Jeanneau boats. The page gives a 38 mm length, 32 mm maximum diameter and 4 oz bullet, so you have useful dimensions to compare before ordering. Its 4.7 rating is based on eight reviews, but the only extracted text is from Spain and merely calls it a good product. That means the rating does not confirm fit on a named UK boat or show how evenly the zinc wears. At £27.64 it is a fit-specific marine component rather than a general-purpose zinc. It makes sense when AQ051, the shaft diameter and the boat’s anode schedule all agree.

Pros

  • 25 mm shaft size clearly stated
  • AQ051 reference with useful dimensions
  • Beneteau and Jeanneau named in the title

Cons

  • No UK-labelled review text
  • Readable review does not confirm fit or wear
  • Not suitable for other shaft diameters

Best for: A Beneteau or Jeanneau installation that specifies AQ051 for a measured 25 mm shaft.

Less suitable: Choosing by boat brand alone without checking shaft size and the original anode reference.

Common questions

Which boats does the title name?

Beneteau and Jeanneau. The size field says a 25 mm shaft. Length is 38 mm and maximum diameter 32 mm.

What does the review say?

One text, labelled Spain, says it is a good product. It does not confirm the shaft size or describe wear. The star line is 4.7 from 8.

AB Tools AQ044 at about £5.19

Rank 5

AB Tools AQ044 at about £5.19

Our view

This AB Tools AQ044 is a clamp-on zinc listed for a 1-1/8 inch (28.6 mm) shaft, with a 57 mm length and 58 mm diameter. At £5.19, this URL appears inexpensive, but the page’s technical-details ASIN differs from the URL. The same AQ044 description also appears on another URL at £26.86, so price alone is not enough to identify the supplied part. Its 4.7 rating is based on five reviews, while the one readable comment is from Canada and only confirms that a diver fitted it. There is no UK wear evidence in the extract. It is a plausible shaft collar only when AQ044 and the measured shaft diameter both match.

Pros

  • Specific 1-1/8 inch (28.6 mm) shaft claim
  • Clamp-on zinc format
  • Low listed price on this URL

Cons

  • Technical-details ASIN does not match the product URL
  • Duplicate AQ044 description appears at a very different price
  • No UK-labelled review text

Best for: A measured 28.6 mm shaft where AQ044 is the required reference and the live listing is verified.

Less suitable: Choosing from the star line or low price without checking the URL, reference and shaft diameter.

Common questions

Which shaft does the listing claim?

The bullets say a 1-1/8 inch shaft, which they also write as 28.6 mm. Length is 57 mm and diameter 58 mm.

Why is there another ASIN on the page?

The product URL is B08XZMMD3L. The technical-details line says B08XZQGJ7P. B08XZMQSF6 carries the same table at £26.86.

Is the review from the UK?

The one review text is labelled Canada. It says a diver fitted it and it fitted. It does not discuss wear.

AB Tools AQ044 at about £26.86

Rank 6

AB Tools AQ044 at about £26.86

∼£27

Our view

This £26.86 AB Tools page carries the same AQ044 clamp-on zinc description, image and 1-1/8 inch (28.6 mm) shaft claim as the £5.19 URL. Its 57 mm length, 58 mm diameter and 15 oz bullet are specific enough to measure against an old collar. However, the technical-details ASIN differs from this URL, and the duplicated page makes it unclear why the listed price is more than five times higher. The 4.7-from-five rating adds little confidence because the sole extracted comment is Canadian and says only that a diver fitted it. No UK text discusses wear or long-term contact. Unless the live page resolves the identity and supply difference, this is difficult to justify over the cheaper AQ044 URL.

Pros

  • Specific 28.6 mm shaft claim
  • AQ044 reference and dimensions stated
  • Clamp-on zinc format

Cons

  • Much dearer than a duplicate AQ044 URL
  • Technical-details ASIN does not match this URL
  • No UK-labelled performance review

Best for: A verified AQ044 order when this exact URL is required and its contents have been confirmed.

Less suitable: Value-led buying while the cheaper duplicate and mismatched ASIN remain unresolved.

Common questions

How does this differ from the other AQ044 URL?

The title, image, sizes, reference AQ044, rank, and the one review text match B08XZMMD3L. This extract is priced at £26.86 and that one at £5.19.

Which shaft does it claim?

1-1/8 inch, also written 28.6 mm, with a clamp. Length 57 mm and diameter 58 mm.

Is the review from the UK?

No. The only text is labelled Canada and says a diver fitted it with no product issue named.

holama hanging zinc

Rank 7

holama hanging zinc

∼£125

Our view

The holama is a hanging zinc-alloy anode supplied with a stainless cable and three crimps for a boat lift or dock. This format avoids matching a shaft diameter, but effective protection still depends on electrical connection and the installation it is meant to protect. The title promises a 20 ft cable, while one extracted US review says only 16 ft arrived and had to be extended. Weight is also inconsistent: the title says 2.4 lb, the size field 2.2 lb and the product line 1.11 kg. None of the ten extracted reviews is from the UK, and one reviewer questioned the alloy after seeing no wear over two months. At £125, it needs much stronger fit and material confirmation than the listing currently provides.

Pros

  • Hanging format for a dock or boat lift
  • Stainless cable and three crimps included
  • No shaft-diameter match required

Cons

  • Cable-length and weight lines conflict
  • No UK-labelled review text
  • High £125 price with unresolved alloy concerns

Best for: A dock or boat-lift installation designed for a hanging zinc, after cable length and bonding are confirmed.

Less suitable: A shaft, cylinder or pool-skimmer replacement, or buying without checking the electrical connection.

DOJA Barcelona M8 250 × 22 mm

Rank 8

DOJA Barcelona M8 250 × 22 mm

∼£13

Our view

The single DOJA Barcelona rod is listed as magnesium, M8 and 250 × 22 mm, which gives you more fit information than the cheapest cylinder rod here. M8 still does not establish compatibility: reviews in the shared block mention M5 and M6 heaters and studs that were too short for some installations. The page also says both “Corded Electric” and “Is Electric No”, which looks like inconsistent catalogue data rather than a powered-anode specification. Its 4.5 rating from 384 reviews is not a UK sample; the extracted texts come from several European countries. Those same texts are duplicated on the two-pack listing. Consider it only after matching the complete dimensions and stud arrangement to the old rod.

Pros

  • M8 and 250 × 22 mm stated in the title
  • Single rod avoids buying a spare unnecessarily
  • Magnesium material clearly identified

Cons

  • No confirmed fit with a named UK cylinder
  • Review block is non-UK and duplicated on another ASIN
  • Electrical fields conflict

Best for: A cylinder that specifically requires an M8, 250 × 22 mm magnesium rod with a matching stud arrangement.

Less suitable: Assuming any M8 rod will fit, or treating the catalogue power field as a powered-anode feature.

Common questions

What thread and length does the title state?

The title says M8 and 250 × 22 mm. Reviews in this extract also describe M5 and M6 heaters, and studs too short to clamp the plate.

Is this a powered anode?

The power-source line says Corded Electric and Is Electric says No. This file has no wattage. It is titled as a magnesium rod.

DOJA Barcelona M8 pair

Rank 9

DOJA Barcelona M8 pair

∼£13

Our view

This DOJA listing offers two magnesium rods titled M8 and 250 × 22 mm for £13.43, only slightly more than the single-rod URL. The 360 g listed weight is consistent with a pair relative to the single version’s 180 g, but fit still depends on the cylinder and stud geometry. Its 1500 W, heat-output and electric fields do not turn these rods into a powered-anode system; the title and included-components line describe sacrificial magnesium rods. The 4.5-from-384 review block is identical to the single listing and contains no UK-labelled text in the extract. Reviews also report fit and quantity problems across that shared block, so they cannot be assigned confidently to this ASIN alone. The pair is sensible only if you have confirmed the exact rod and genuinely need two.

Pros

  • Two M8, 250 × 22 mm rods listed
  • Small price increase over the single listing
  • Pack count and 360 g weight support a pair

Cons

  • 1500 W and electric fields are misleading catalogue data
  • Shared non-UK review block is not product-specific
  • No named UK cylinder compatibility

Best for: Two matching replacements for a cylinder installation already confirmed to use this exact M8 rod.

Less suitable: Anyone seeking a powered anode, or buying a pair before measuring the existing part.

XRmarine Volvo Penta 5-pack

Rank 10

XRmarine Volvo Penta 5-pack

∼£30

Our view

The XRmarine pack contains five zinc anodes listed against several Volvo Penta and cross-reference part numbers for £29.99. It is the only row in this set with UK-labelled review text: both comments support the fit or value, although neither names the drive model. One reviewer also notes male and female threaded ends and sea-water use, which is more practical evidence than most listings here provide. Confidence is still limited by a product bullet that mistakenly describes an ignition coil and engine overheating. The 4.5 rating is based on only two reviews, so it is not a broad durability sample. This is the strongest-evidenced marine option in the extract only when your old parts match the listed references.

Pros

  • Five zinc anodes for £29.99
  • Two UK-labelled reviews
  • Multiple Volvo Penta cross-reference numbers listed

Cons

  • Only two reviews
  • Neither review names a drive model
  • One bullet incorrectly describes an ignition coil

Best for: A Volvo Penta drive whose removed anodes and part numbers match this five-piece set.

Less suitable: Treating the broad part-number list as proof of fit without comparing every old anode.

Common questions

Which drives does the listing name?

A bullet says most Volvo Penta drives and lists part numbers 3838499, 800476, 804107, 838929, 858501, 18-6001, CM838929Z, 12789, and 00714. Neither UK review names a drive model.

Why does a bullet mention an ignition coil?

One product-introduction bullet calls this an ignition coil and talks about engine overheating. The included-components line says five male and female hollow end anodes.

What do the UK reviews say?

Both texts are labelled United Kingdom. One says the fit and the price for five pieces were good. The other says the boat needs more active anodes and that this would suit sea water, and notes male and female screws.

Hrtyvhin 55321-87J01

Rank 11

Hrtyvhin 55321-87J01

∼£16

Our view

The Hrtyvhin is presented as an outboard anode against part number 55321-87J01, but the extract does not provide its alloy or dimensions. A bullet makes broad salt-water and fresh-water claims and refers to engines from 9.9L to 300HP, without repeating that compatibility in the model fields. There is no Amazon star line or review text to confirm fit, finish or wear. The listing also claims performance against standard aluminium anodes while leaving its own metal unnamed. At £16.19 it is not costly, but the missing material and fit evidence are more important than price. Buy only if the original part reference and seller-confirmed dimensions match your specific outboard.

Pros

  • Title provides reference 55321-87J01
  • Listed for marine outboards
  • Moderate £16.19 price

Cons

  • Alloy and dimensions are not stated
  • No star rating or review evidence
  • Compatibility claims are broad and internally weak

Best for: An outboard whose original documentation calls for 55321-87J01, after dimensions and alloy are confirmed.

Less suitable: Selecting by horsepower range or water claim without a verified part-number match.

No customer-review line and no review text are in this extract.

How we compared

Eleven sacrificial-anode listings on amazon.co.uk were kept from a wider set of 38, using the lines stored on 16 October 2026. Prices, stars and review counts are those UK lines. There was no laboratory corrosion test. The 1–10 score uses the five weights below, which sum to 100. The amazon star line is shown separately and is not that score. The top pick is the only listing with UK-labelled review text, and only for a matching Volvo Penta part list. The best value is the single magnesium rod that states M8 and 250 × 22 mm at about £12.99.

1

Job

25%

A cylinder rod, shaft collar, sterndrive kit, outboard anode, hanging zinc and skimmer plate are scored as different jobs. They are not substitutes.

Sacrificial anode buying guide

Choose the job, the alloy and the old part before you compare prices. Magnesium and zinc are not interchangeable, and the water decides which one belongs. The split is in the [magnesium or zinc guide](/hub/hot-water/sacrificial-anode/sub/sacrificial-anode-magnesium-or-zinc).

What is a sacrificial anode?

A sacrificial anode corrodes on purpose so the steel, shaft or fitting it is bonded to does not. In a UK home the usual part is the magnesium rod in an enamelled hot-water cylinder. On a boat it is zinc or aluminium in salt or brackish water, or magnesium in fresh water. In a salt pool it is a small zinc plate in the skimmer. This amazon.co.uk extract, read on 16 October 2026, mixes those jobs: three magnesium heater rods, six marine zinc listings and two pool plates. Fit comes before price.

Best for

  • A cylinder owner who can match the maker’s magnesium rod
  • A boat owner matching zinc to a measured shaft or a Volvo Penta part list
  • A salt-pool owner fitting a zinc plate in the skimmer basket

Not ideal for

  • Buying on the word anode when the job is a cylinder, a shaft or a pool
  • An unvented cylinder when the maker’s steps are unclear
  • A wooden hull, or a magnesium rod you intend to wire to the mains

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying on the word anode

A cylinder rod, a shaft collar, a sterndrive kit, a hanging dock zinc and a skimmer plate are different parts. Price does not turn one into another.

  2. 2

Reading non-UK stars as British opinion

The DOJA 4.5 from 384 is the same block on two ASINs, from several European countries. Only the XRmarine five-pack has review text labelled United Kingdom, and there are two of those reviews.

  3. 3

Treating catalogue power lines as a powered anode

Corded Electric and 1500 W on the DOJA rods disagree with a magnesium-rod title. Do not wire the rod. A powered titanium anode, such as Lochinvar Correx, is a different part on specified vessels.

What to weigh up

Job, alloy and fit

High

A sacrificial anode only works on the metal it is bonded to, in the water it was chosen for. A cylinder rod, a shaft collar, a sterndrive anode, a hanging dock zinc and a skimmer plate are not substitutes. In a UK home the usual part is the magnesium rod in an enamelled hot-water cylinder. Vaillant’s uniSTOR manual specifies magnesium for that vessel, with an external-current anode as the alternative.

Listing evidence and price

Medium

Prefer a named thread, a mass and a part number over a star line. Stars on this page are the amazon.co.uk figures, and most of them are not British opinion. The DOJA 4.5 from 384 is repeated on the single and the pair. The extracted texts are from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Italy. The holama 4.6 from 46 and the pool stars are United States or Canada texts in this file. Only two UK-labelled reviews appear, both on the XRmarine five-pack, and neither names a drive model.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Cylinder owner

You need the maker’s magnesium rod, not a boat zinc. The DOJA single states M8 and 250 × 22 mm at about £12.99. Match the old rod, including the stud, before you order. If the cylinder is unvented and the steps are unclear, use a competent person.

Volvo Penta drive

You need zinc anodes whose part numbers match the pieces you removed. The XRmarine five-pack is about £29.99 and is the only row here with UK-labelled reviews. Neither review names a drive model, so compare every old anode with the list.

Salt-pool skimmer

You are looking at a zinc plate tied into the skimmer basket, which these listings also sell as a basket weight. The Deargooday two-pack includes ties and bolts at about £19.82. It does not protect a hot-water cylinder, and the review texts here are from the United States.

Common questions about sacrificial anodes

Which sacrificial anode is the top pick in this set?
The top pick is the XRmarine Volvo Penta five-pack, about £29.99, rated 4.5 from 2 reviews. It is the only listing in this extract with review text labelled United Kingdom. One comment says the fit and the price for five pieces were good. The other mentions male and female screws and sea water. Neither names a drive model, and one bullet wrongly calls the part an ignition coil. Buy it only when the old anodes match the listed part numbers. It is not a cylinder rod.
Which listing is the best value?
The best value is the DOJA Barcelona single magnesium rod at about £12.99. The title states M8 and 250 × 22 mm, and the page weight is 180 g. That is more fit information than the ZEPFJHE rod at about £8.39, which does not state a thread. The pair is about £13.43 and makes sense only if you need two of that exact rod. The 4.5 from 384 reviews is not a UK sample. The £5.19 shaft URL is a different job.
How much does a sacrificial anode cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this extract, heater rods are about £8.39 to £13.43. Most marine and pool anodes are about £16.19 to £29.99. One AB Tools AQ044 URL is about £5.19 and another about £26.86 for the same described 15 oz, 1-1/8 inch shaft part. That low price is not a clean budget grade until the live page is checked. The holama hanging zinc is about £125. These are the amazon.co.uk lines read on 16 October 2026.
Should the anode be magnesium or zinc?
Match the alloy to the water and the job. Vaillant’s uniSTOR manual specifies magnesium for that cylinder, with an external-current anode as the alternative. MG Duff says zinc or aluminium in salt water, aluminium in brackish water, and magnesium in fresh water, and never magnesium on a wooden hull. The marine rows in this set are zinc. A skimmer plate is a pool part, not a cylinder rod. Do not leave zinc in fresh water and expect the same behaviour as in salt water.
Is a magnesium rod a powered anode?
No. Do not wire a magnesium rod. BS EN 12499:2003 separates a galvanic anode from a soluble impressed-current anode. Lochinvar’s Correx is the powered type: 230 V in, a titanium anode and a green LED, on specified vessels. The DOJA single page says both Corded Electric and Is Electric No. The pair lists 1500 W and Is Electric Yes. Those lines disagree with a title that sells magnesium rods. They are not a reason to connect the rod to the mains.
Will a generic M8 rod fit a UK hot-water cylinder?
Not from the title alone. The DOJA rods are titled M8 and 250 × 22 mm. Reviews in that shared block mention M5 and M6 heaters and studs too short to clamp the plate. Those texts are from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Italy, and the same block is on both DOJA listings. Measure the old rod, including the stud, and follow the cylinder maker. If the vessel is unvented and the steps are unclear, use a competent person.
When should the anode be checked?
The Hot Water Association says an anode, if fitted, is checked to the maker’s instructions by a qualified person. Vaillant’s uniSTOR manual puts the first magnesium check after two years, then yearly, and about five years as that manual’s average life. A chain anode is for a low ceiling. That figure is not a life for every cylinder. Stop if the water is rusty, a safety valve is discharging, or the thread needs modification. What worn looks like is in how to check a sacrificial anode.
Does a skimmer plate protect a hot-water tank?
No. The Deargooday and Dairrr Fuuu plates are zinc pieces for a salt-pool skimmer basket. The listings also sell them as a basket weight. A bullet on each says the plate neutralises salt. That line is not treated here as water treatment. These plates do not replace the magnesium rod in a cylinder, or a shaft or sterndrive anode. The review texts kept for both plates are labelled United States. Deargooday’s about 3 years is a listing estimate for half worn.

Our verdict

Across these eleven amazon.co.uk listings, the jobs do not interchange. The top pick is DOJA Barcelona M8 250 × 22 mm, with the highest score in this comparison (8.2 out of 10, from 384 amazon.co.uk reviews). The best value is the DOJA Barcelona single rod at about £12.99, titled M8 and 250 × 22 mm. The cheaper ZEPFJHE rod does not state a thread, and the £5.19 AQ044 URL is the same described part as a £26.86 URL.
