How to check a sacrificial anode safely

Updated: 17.10.2026

Knowing how to check a sacrificial anode starts with where it is fitted. A magnesium rod inside an unvented hot-water cylinder has a maker’s service interval. A boat anode is usually judged by visible loss. A pool-skimmer plate may carry its own replacement claim. There is no universal replace-after-three-years rule. The [sacrificial anode comparison](/hub/hot-water/sacrificial-anode) contains examples of all these jobs, so use only the guidance for your equipment. Record the installation date, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and stop before opening an unvented cylinder if you are not competent to service it. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are looking for

A sacrificial anode is supposed to corrode instead of the protected metal. Look for erosion, deep pitting, an uneven shape, loose sections and poor contact. Photograph it beside a ruler and compare that with an earlier service image. Paint, scale or a loose fixing can isolate a boat anode even when metal remains. Mercury Marine’s UK guidance says to clean the mounting face so a new outboard anode contacts metal. Do not judge a cylinder rod from an amazon.co.uk photograph. The working surface is inside the vessel, and removal means isolation, draining, sealing and recommissioning. The hot water cylinder anode guide keeps those rods apart from marine and pool parts.

Cylinder intervals belong to the manufacturer

Use the interval in that vessel’s manual. Vaillant’s UK uniSTOR instructions check the magnesium anode first after two years, then annually, and give about five years as the average life in that manual. That is not a life for every rod. The same manual describes a chain anode where the ceiling blocks a rigid rod. Joule’s Cyclone warranty text requires inspection within three months of installation, replacement if corroded, then intervals no longer than 12 months. The Hot Water Association sets no wear percentage: where an anode is fitted, a suitably qualified person checks it to the maker’s instructions. Do not merge those two schedules. If the manual is missing, read the data plate before anyone removes the anode.

A clean rod can be a warning

A heavily eroded anode has been active. A tidy rod is not automatically healthy. Hamworthy warns that in soft, low-conductivity water a magnesium anode can look sound because too little current flows to protect the vessel. That threshold is for its own products, not every UK cylinder. If a rod barely changes between dated inspections, ask the cylinder maker or a competent engineer whether the water suits that protection system. A powered anode is a controller and a non-sacrificial electrode, not a magnesium rod on the mains. Rust-coloured water needs diagnosis, not a blind swap. The magnesium or zinc guide covers why the metal follows the water.

Boat and pool wear rules differ

A common marine trigger is about half the original metal lost. Mercury Marine’s UK outboard guidance uses approximately half lost. Practical Boat Owner sources also contain lines around 50%, 40% remaining and 75% of original size, depending on the article. Use the engine, drive or anode maker’s figure. Check linked external anodes together. Uneven wear can mean one part is working harder, contact is poor, or the alloy does not suit the water. MG Duff says to change all external zincs together when a direct aluminium replacement exists, and to change anodes if the boat stays in different water for more than two weeks. Deargooday says to replace its plate at about half eroded and estimates roughly three years. That is a seller line, not a UK interval. A plate that has lost its tie protects nothing.

When to stop and call a professional

Do not improvise on an unvented cylinder. UK servicing guidance gives this work to a suitably qualified person, and competent-person schemes cover unvented hot water. The anode limits corrosion. It is not the temperature, pressure or discharge device. Stop if you cannot isolate or drain safely, the manual is missing, the cap is seized, the thread is uncertain, or there is too little headroom. A discharging safety valve, very hot water, a leak or rusty water needs a professional. Do not disable a safety control to reach the anode. On a boat, stop if the fixing is damaged, the bonding is unclear, corrosion is severe at the mount, or the alloy conflicts with the hull. Magnesium must not go on a wooden hull.

Common questions

How often should a UK cylinder anode be checked?
Follow the cylinder manual. Vaillant’s cited uniSTOR instructions say first after two years and annually afterwards, while Joule’s cited warranty requires an inspection within three months and then at no more than 12-month intervals. Those are product-specific schedules, not interchangeable rules.
What does a worn cylinder anode look like?
It may be pitted, narrowed, uneven or visibly consumed compared with a new rod. The manufacturer decides when that condition requires replacement. A service photograph beside a ruler provides a useful comparison. Removal and assessment of an unvented-cylinder rod should be left to a competent person.
Is a clean anode a good sign?
Not necessarily. In soft, low-conductivity water, a sacrificial anode can look intact because it is not working effectively. If it shows unexpectedly little change, ask the cylinder manufacturer or service engineer whether the water and protection system suit that vessel.
When is a boat anode finished?
About half lost is a common maker rule, including Mercury’s cited UK guidance, but published thresholds vary. Use the engine, drive or anode manufacturer’s criterion. Replace a loose, isolated or unsuitable anode even if a large amount of metal remains.
Who should open an unvented cylinder?
A suitably qualified person who can follow the manufacturer’s service procedure and safely isolate, drain, reseal and recommission the system. The Hot Water Association places the anode check within competent servicing. An online rod listing is not an installation instruction.
Does the anode replace the cylinder safety valves?
No. A sacrificial anode limits corrosion of the protected vessel. Temperature, pressure and discharge controls do separate safety jobs. Never disable or obstruct them while you are checking an anode, and get professional help if a safety valve is discharging.
