Top pick: CRMCC weed membrane, 2 m × 50 m Best value: iropro weed membrane, 3 m × 25 m – Among scores of 70 or above, the lower price per stated square metre with no hard size or weight conflict: about £33.47 for 3 m by 25 m, 4.5 from 6,328 reviews. Updated October 2026.
A ground cover for a UK garden is a weed-control sheet, almost always black woven polypropylene, sold as weed membrane or weed barrier fabric. Judge a roll by a width and length you can check, a weight in grams per square metre, and a weave that lets rain through. Heavy duty, on its own, is not a weight.
The Royal Horticultural Society advises a permeable sheet. A waterproof layer can send water off the bed. Allow about 100 to 150 mm of overlap on every join, pin the sheet, and cover it. Pegs are often sold separately. Solid polythene blocks water as well as light, and a root barrier for bamboo or knotweed is a different product.
In England, a hard surface between the front of the house and a highway, over 5 square metres, must be porous or drain to a permeable area. An impermeable sheet under gravel can work against that. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland need a local check. Size, weight and pegs are explained in the [ground cover buying guide](/hub/garden-supplies/ground-cover/sub/ground-cover-buying-guide).

The CRMCC title says 2 m × 50 m, about 100 m², at £36.99, and the item-weight field says 500 g. Those two figures do not describe a heavy woven fabric. The bullet says woven polypropylene, that rain passes unlike a plastic sheet, and that you overlap by 15 cm, then peg, then cover with bark, gravel or stones. Pegs are not included, green guide lines are stated, and no UV year is in the file. The listing line is 4.8 from 14 amazon.co.uk reviews. One review calls it a 100 m roll and another says their piece is 1 m × 100 m, so the stars are not a settled description of a 2 m × 50 m sheet. In this file it ranks 4,744 in Garden and 31 in Weed Barrier Fabric.
Pros
Title says 2 m × 50 m at £36.99
Bullet says rain passes, unlike a plastic sheet, with a 15 cm overlap
Green guide lines are stated
Cons
500 g listed against about 100 m²
4.8 from 14 reviews
One review calls it a 100 m roll and another says 1 m × 100 m
Pegs are not included, and no UV year is stated
Best for: You only consider it after you weigh the parcel, because 500 g cannot be the fabric of a 100 m² heavy sheet.
Less suitable: You need a weight that matches the title area, or reviews that agree the piece is 2 m × 50 m.
The Vivo CM250 title is a woven 2 m × 50 m roll at £39.99, with an item weight of 10.26 kg. On the stated 100 m² that is about 100 g on each square metre. The bullet also says 8oz and 350 N, with no test method, and those words do not match the kilogram. The 4.7 from 1,067 reviews, the rank and the review texts are the same pool as Vivo 1 m × 10 m, B0DQ7KMBQF. One review in the pool does name 2 m × 50 m. Pegs are not included. The bullets claim water drainage and do not state a UV year. In this file it ranks 111 in Garden and 3 in Weed Barrier Fabric, the same rank as the short Vivo roll.
Pros
Title says 2 m × 50 m, item weight 10.26 kg
About £0.40 on each stated square metre if the title area is what arrives
One review in the shared pool names 2 m × 50 m
Bullets claim water drainage
Cons
8oz and 350 N have no test method and do not match about 100 g/m² from the kilogram
The 1,067 reviews and the Garden rank are shared with the 1 m × 10 m listing
Pegs are not included
No UV year
Best for: You want a long Vivo roll at £39.99 and you will treat 8oz as a slogan, not as the weight of this sheet.
Less suitable: You need a review file that is only this ASIN, or an ounce claim that matches 10.26 kg.
Item weight is 10.26 kg. The bullet also says 8oz and 350 N, with no test method. Those claims do not match about 100 g/m² from the kilogram and the stated area.
Are the 1,067 reviews only for this roll?
The same count, rank and review texts are on Vivo 1 m × 10 m, B0DQ7KMBQF. One review in the pool does name 2 m × 50 m.
Does the file name a UV life?
No. The bullets claim water drainage and do not state a UV year.
The Vivo CM110 title is a 1 m × 10 m roll at £12.99, about £1.30 on each stated square metre. A bullet says 8oz tough density and 350 N, with no test method. Item weight is 1.3 kg on the stated 10 m², which is not the same as 8 ounces per square yard. The 4.7 from 1,067 reviews, the Garden rank of 111 and the first 50 texts match Vivo 2 m × 50 m, B0CR1DRHGJ, and some of that text names the 50 m size. A review in the shared text says you need weights or pegs. The title says woven. No UV year is stated. The pack size in the file is 105 × 6.5 × 6.5 cm.
Pros
Title says 1 m × 10 m woven membrane
Bullet claims drainage and air
Pack size 105 × 6.5 × 6.5 cm is a real parcel line, not 1 × 1 × 1 cm
Cons
8oz and 350 N have no test method, beside 1.3 kg on 10 m²
Stars, rank and review texts are shared with the 50 m Vivo listing
About £1.30 on each stated square metre
Pegs are not included
Best for: You want a 1 m × 10 m Vivo roll and you will ignore the shared 50 m review texts when you judge this length.
Less suitable: You need an 8oz figure that matches the kilogram, or a review file that is only this ASIN.
The bullet says 8oz tough density and 350 N, with no test method. The item weight is 1.3 kg on a stated 10 m², which is not the same as 8 ounces per square yard.
Can you use the reviews for this 10 m roll only?
No. The star count, Garden rank and first 50 review texts match Vivo 2 m × 50 m, B0CR1DRHGJ. Some of that text names the 50 m size.
Are pegs included?
No. A review in the shared text says you need weights or pegs.
The VOUNOT 2 m × 10 m roll is the 20 m² sheet that states 100 gsm woven polypropylene and 30 U-pegs, at £11.90. Item weight is 2.27 kg, and 20 m² at 100 gsm is 2.0 kg, so the kilogram and the gsm line sit close. The bullets say air, water and nutrients pass, and guide lines are stated. Across 4.6 from 4,562 amazon.co.uk reviews, one UK review says the parcel had no pegs, and another says the pins would not go through the fabric. Several reviews say it arrived folded and that you need space to open it. Country of origin is China, and UV stabilised is stated with no year. It is the top pick in this set because the gsm, the weight and the peg line are all on the listing, with the missing-pegs review left in view.
Pros
100 gsm woven polypropylene, and 2.27 kg is close to 2.0 kg for 20 m²
30 U-pegs stated, with guide lines
4.6 from 4,562 amazon.co.uk reviews
Bullets say air, water and nutrients pass
Cons
One UK review received no pegs
Another review says the pins would not go through the fabric
Several reviews say it arrived folded and needs space to open
No UV year
Best for: You want a 2 m × 10 m border roll with a stated 100 gsm and pegs named in the bullet, and you will count the pegs on arrival.
Less suitable: You need a guarantee the 30 pegs are in the parcel, or a 25 m length.
The ACCURATE 2 m × 10 m sheet is £13.73 for a stated 20 m². The material field says polypropylene fabric, gsm is not stated, and the item weight is 1.78 kg. The bullets say it is UV stabilised and that water, air and nutrients pass. Pegs are not in the bullets or the technical block, and the title and the bullets do not clash on size. The listing line is 4.6 from 17 amazon.co.uk reviews. Eight UK reviews are recorded, mostly one line long, which is too small a sample to judge a season in the ground. Pack size is 32 × 26 × 7 cm.
Pros
Title and bullets agree on 2 m × 10 m
Bullets say UV stabilised and that water, air and nutrients pass
Item weight 1.78 kg on the stated 20 m²
Cons
No gsm
4.6 from 17 reviews, eight of them mostly one line
Pegs are not included
£13.73 is more than other 2 m × 10 m rolls in this set that state a gsm or a much larger review file
Best for: You want a 2 m × 10 m polypropylene sheet whose title and bullet name the same size, and you can accept 17 reviews.
Less suitable: You need a stated gsm, or a review sample large enough to judge weeds after a year.
The ANSIO 2 m × 10 m roll is a stated 20 m² at £9.45, and the bullets say air, water and nutrients pass. There is no grams-per-square-metre figure. Item weight is 1.6 kg. Across 4.5 from 11,833 amazon.co.uk reviews, one note in the first 50 says it was still stopping weeds after about four years, with the odd weed at the edge. Another says a few weeds came through after a year, and one says the sheet broke into plastic strands. Reviews say the cut edge frays, and the bullet says you can cut it with scissors or a knife. Pegs are not included, UV stabilised has no year, and the dimensions field says 1 × 1 × 1 cm.
Pros
2 m × 10 m at £9.45, about £0.47 on each stated square metre
4.5 from 11,833 amazon.co.uk reviews on this listing
Bullets say air, water and nutrients pass
One review in the first 50 still reported weed control after about four years
Cons
No gsm
Weeds at the edge, weeds after about a year, and a sheet that broke into plastic strands
Cut edge frays
Pegs not included, and the dimensions field says 1 × 1 × 1 cm
Best for: You want a 2 m × 10 m roll with a large amazon.co.uk review file and you can cover the sheet so the sun does not finish it.
Less suitable: You need a stated gsm, pegs in the box, or a sheet the reviews do not describe as breaking into strands.
No. The title is 2 m × 10 m and the item weight is 1.6 kg. There is no grams-per-square-metre figure.
What do the UK reviews say after a year?
In the first 50, one review says it was still stopping weeds after about four years, with the odd weed at the edge. Another says a few weeds came through after a year, and one says the sheet broke into plastic strands.
Can you cut it with scissors?
The bullet says scissors or a knife. Reviews say the cut edge frays.
The iropro roll is 3 m × 25 m, a stated 75 m², at £33.47, about £0.45 on each stated square metre. Item weight is 6.4 kg, and gsm is not stated. The bullet says black woven polypropylene, permeable, with bright green guide lines, and that 2 m, 3 m and 4 m cloths are folded, then rolled, and should be unrolled fully. Across 4.5 from 6,328 amazon.co.uk reviews, one note in the first 50 says rain did not pass and that they would not use it in a flower bed. Others in that sample used it under gravel and bark. Pegs are not included, and UV resistant is stated with no year. On price per stated square metre, with that review count and a width the listing gives, it is the best value in the set, and the rain note stays attached.
Pros
3 m × 25 m at £33.47, about £0.45 on each stated square metre
4.5 from 6,328 amazon.co.uk reviews
Woven polypropylene, a permeable claim, and bright green guide lines
Others in the first 50 used it under gravel and bark
Cons
No gsm
One review says rain did not pass and they would not use it in a flower bed
Wide cloths are folded in the pack and need to be unrolled fully
Pegs are not included
Best for: You want a 3 m width for a long run and you will cover it, after reading the review that says rain sat on it.
Less suitable: You need a stated gsm, or a flower bed where every review says water went through.
The title and the dimensions field say 3 m by 25 m. The bullet says 2 m, 3 m and 4 m cloths are folded, then rolled, and should be unrolled fully.
Does the listing state gsm?
No. Item weight is 6.4 kg. The bullet says black woven polypropylene with guide lines.
Do UK reviews agree that water passes?
The bullet says it does. One review in the first 50 says rain did not pass and that they would not use it in a flower bed. Others used it under gravel and bark.
The Ram 2 m × 5 m roll is the short sheet in this set, £6.87 for a stated 10 m² if the title is the piece that arrives. The listing line is 4.5 from 3,653 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the same texts, the same count and the same Garden rank sit on Ram 2 m × 10 m, B0BLZ4T2H3, so a sentence in that pool is not a record of the 5 m length alone. The title says UV stabilised. Grams per square metre, the fibre and a water line are not in this file's bullets. Item weight is 920 g, and the dimensions field says 1 × 1 × 1 cm, which does not describe a roll. Shared reviews mention a grid. Pegs are not included.
Pros
Stated 2 m × 5 m at £6.87
Title says UV stabilised
Item weight 920 g on the stated 10 m²
Shared reviews mention a grid
Cons
The 3,653 reviews and Garden rank are shared with the 10 m Ram listing
No gsm, fibre or water line in this file’s bullets
Pegs are not included
Dimensions field says 1 × 1 × 1 cm
Best for: You want a short 2 m × 5 m sheet at £6.87 and you will not read the shared review pool as proof about this length.
Less suitable: You need a stated gsm, a water line in the bullets, or pegs in the box.
The Ram title says 2 m × 10 m, a stated 20 m², at £8.99, and a bullet in the same file says it is supplied as a 2 m × 5 m roll. The coverage field says 20 m². The title says 1.5 kg and the item-weight field says 1.79 kg. A unit-count field says 1.0 gram, which is not the fabric, and the item-form field says Powder. The bullet calls it woven and says water, air and nutrients pass. Pegs are not included. The 4.5 from 3,653 reviews, the Garden rank of 41 and the first review texts match B0BLZ8WMG6, so they are not a record of this length only. UV stabilised is stated with no year.
Pros
Title and coverage field say 2 m × 10 m, 20 m², at £8.99
Bullet says woven, and that water, air and nutrients pass
Item-weight field says 1.79 kg
Cons
A bullet in the same file says 2 m × 5 m
Title says 1.5 kg, the field says 1.79 kg, and a unit-count field says 1.0 gram
Reviews, count and Garden rank are shared with the 5 m Ram listing
Pegs are not included, and the item-form field says Powder
Best for: You want the £8.99 Ram listing and you will measure the roll when it arrives, because the bullet and the title disagree.
Less suitable: You need one agreed length in the file, or review texts that belong only to 2 m × 10 m.
The Zuvo 1 m × 10 m sheet is a narrow 10 m² strip at £8.99. The bullet says woven polypropylene, 110 gsm, and that water and air pass, with a 10-15 cm overlap. The same file lists 910 g, and a UK review weighed about 900 g. Ten square metres at 110 gsm would be about 1.1 kg of fabric, so the gsm line and the kilogram do not meet. Pegs are sold separately. One UK review received two 5 m pieces instead of one 10 m length. UV stabilised is stated with no year. The listing line is 4.5 from 288 amazon.co.uk reviews.
Pros
Bullet states woven polypropylene and that water and air pass
10–15 cm overlap is written in the bullet
4.5 from 288 reviews on this ASIN, not a shared pool
£8.99 for a stated 1 m × 10 m
Cons
110 gsm against 910 g listed, and a review weighed about 900 g
Pegs are sold separately
One UK review received two 5 m pieces
No UV year
Best for: You want a 1 m wide strip and you will check the parcel weight against the 110 gsm line before you lay it.
Less suitable: You need the gsm and the kilogram to agree, or pegs in the same box.
The VOUNOT 2 m × 25 m roll is 50 m² of stated 100 gsm woven polypropylene at £23.99, and it does not include the 30 pegs named on the shorter VOUNOT listing. Item weight is 4.17 kg. Fifty square metres at 100 gsm would be 5.0 kg, so the kilogram is light against the gsm line. The bullets say air, water and nutrients pass, and guide lines are stated. Country of origin is China, and UV stabilised has no year. The listing line is 4.4 from 3,293 amazon.co.uk reviews. The file does not add a UK note on weeds or water for this length, so the star line is not a record of how this 25 m roll lay.
Pros
Stated 100 gsm woven polypropylene on 2 m × 25 m
Guide lines, and a water, air and nutrients claim
4.4 from 3,293 amazon.co.uk reviews
£23.99 is about £0.48 on each stated square metre
Cons
4.17 kg against about 5.0 kg if the sheet were 100 gsm over 50 m²
Pegs are not included
No UK note in the file on weeds or water for this length
No UV year
Best for: You want 50 m² of VOUNOT with a stated 100 gsm and you will buy pegs separately.
Less suitable: You need the 30 pegs from the 10 m VOUNOT listing, or a kilogram that matches 100 gsm.
The jxgzyy roll is the long sheet in this set, 2 m × 100 m, a stated 200 m², at £79.99. The bullet says 92 g/m². Two hundred square metres at that figure is about 18.4 kg, and the item weight is 18.85 kg, which is close. A UK review says it is folded, so it looks like 1 m until it is opened, and that it is 2 m by 100 m. The material field says polypropylene, while a bullet also says degradable materials, and there is no home-compost certificate in the file. Drainage and breathability are claimed, with green dimension lines and a UV line that has no year. Pegs are not included. The listing line is 4.4 from 31 amazon.co.uk reviews.
Pros
2 m × 100 m at £79.99, about £0.40 on each stated square metre
92 g/m² in the bullet, close to the 18.85 kg item weight
A UK review confirms the folded sheet opens to 2 m × 100 m
Green dimension lines and a drainage claim
Cons
A degradable bullet sits next to polypropylene, with no home-compost certificate
4.4 from 31 reviews
Pegs are not included
Ranked 31,970 in Garden in this file
Best for: You want about 200 m² in one roll and you will not put a polypropylene sheet in the garden-waste bin.
Less suitable: You need a compostable sheet with a certificate, or a large review sample.
The bullet says 92 g/m². 200 m² at that figure is about 18.4 kg. The item weight is 18.85 kg, which is close.
Is it degradable?
A bullet says degradable materials. The material field says polypropylene. There is no home-compost certificate in the file.
Why does the roll look 1 m wide?
A UK review says it is folded, so it looks like 1 m until it is opened, and it is 2 m by 100 m.
How we compared
Twelve amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the shelf prices, star lines and review notes already on those pages, dated 19 October 2026. There is no laboratory test. A bullet that says heavy duty, UV stabilised, 8oz or 350 N is not scored as a measured result. Grams per square metre count only when the listing states them. A shared review block is not treated as proof about one length. The highest score is the top pick, once. Among the other products scored 70 or above, the lower price per stated square metre, with no hard size or weight conflict, is best value, once. The weights below sum to 100.
1
Amazon evidence
25%
Star rating on amazon.co.uk, scaled to 15, then reduced when the count is small, plus a count band up to 10. If the same review texts and the same count sit on two ASINs in this set, that block is multiplied by 0.6. The count multiplier on the star part is full at 100 reviews or more, 0.75 from 30 to 99, and 0.45 from 10 to 29. The count band is 10 at 2,000 or more, 8 at 500, 6 at 100, 4 at 30 and 2 at 10. The two parts are added, the shared-pool cut is applied, and the result is capped at 25.
2
Listing fit
40%
An agreed size, a stated gsm that sits within about 15 per cent of item weight divided by the title area, a named weave, a permeable line in the bullets, and pegs named in the pack. A junk dimensions field, a bullet that names a different size, an 8oz line beside a kilogram, or 500 g on about 100 m² scores lower.
3
Review outcome
20%
UK notes that describe this roll in use score higher than a shared pool or a file of one-line reviews. A repeated failure in those notes, such as no pegs, rain that did not pass, a sheet that broke into strands, or a different cut received, lowers this block.
4
Value
15%
Shelf price in GBP divided by the title area. The lowest price per square metre does not take the points when the size or the weight is in hard conflict. A 4.8 from 14 reviews is not the top pick when the kilogram cannot be the fabric. The £6.87 roll is not best value when its reviews are shared and the file states no gsm.

Ground cover buying guide
Choose the area before the price. Width times length is the sheet, then take off overlap. A stated grams-per-square-metre figure is the weight that matters. Heavy duty is not a weight, and a star rating is not a laboratory test. The twelve rows are amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026.
What is ground cover?
Ground cover in this category is a weed-control sheet you buy to block light under bark, gravel, decking or on an allotment. On these amazon.co.uk listings it is almost always black woven polypropylene, sold as weed membrane or weed barrier fabric. It is not a drainage geotextile, and it is not a root barrier for bamboo or knotweed.
The checks that stay useful when the listings change are size, grams per square metre, a permeable weave, and pegs. Width times length is the area.
Best for
A border or gravel path where you can state the area and cover the sheet
An allotment bed where you want a permeable woven roll, not solid polythene
Not ideal for
A vehicle base, a soakaway, or a root barrier for bamboo or knotweed
Anyone who will leave polypropylene bare in the sun or in the garden-waste bin
Mistakes to avoid
1
Trusting heavy duty
Grams per square metre count only when the listing states them. A 110 gsm line beside 910 g, an 8oz line beside a kilogram, or 500 g on about 100 m² is a conflict, not a weight you can lay by.
2
No overlap, and a bare sheet
Add 100 to 150 mm on every join. Hy-Tex Covertex uses about 150 mm and about one pin per square metre. Cover the plastic. Bare polypropylene goes brittle in the sun, and persistent weeds may still come through.
3
The wrong product, or the garden bin
A weed membrane is not a root barrier and not a drainage geotextile. One season will not finish couch grass. Garden-waste collections in England do not have to take plastic. A shared review pool is not proof about one length.
What to weigh up
Size, gsm and weave
High
Start with the area. Width times length is the roll, then subtract overlap of about 100 to 150 mm on every join. A 2 m by 10 m sheet is the usual border. A 1 m width is a strip. A 3 m width covers a path in fewer joins. A 25 m, 50 m or 100 m length is an allotment or a long run, and you still have to get the roll home.
Then read the weight. A stated gsm is the figure. Twenty square metres at 100 gsm is 2.0 kg. Fifty square metres at 100 gsm is 5.0 kg.
Pegs, cover and drainage
High
Pegs hold the overlap. In this set only the 2 m by 10 m VOUNOT bullet states a count, 30 U-pegs, and one UK review says the parcel had none. Other listings say pegs are separate. Hy-Tex Covertex, a trade fabric, uses about one pin per square metre. Guide lines help you keep the joins straight. They do not add weight.
Cover the sheet with bark, gravel or stone. A UV line with no year is not a life in the sun.
Which option suits you?
Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.
🌿
A border or gravel path
You want a 2 m by 10 m roll with a stated gsm and pegs named in the bullet, and you will count the pegs on arrival. The VOUNOT sheet is about £11.90, stated as 100 gsm woven polypropylene with 30 U-pegs, and 4.6 from 4,562 reviews. Item weight is 2.27 kg, close to 2.0 kg for 20 m². One UK review received no pegs.
You want a 3 m width for a long bed or path, and you will cover the sheet after reading the review that says rain sat on it. The iropro roll is about £33.47, stated as 3 m by 25 m, about £0.45 on each stated square metre, with 4.5 from 6,328 reviews. Gsm is not stated. Pegs are not included.
You want one long roll and you will not put polypropylene in the garden-waste bin. The jxgzyy sheet is about £79.99, stated as 2 m by 100 m, with a 92 g/m² bullet close to the 18.85 kg item weight, and 4.4 from 31 reviews. A bullet also says degradable, beside polypropylene, with no home-compost certificate in the file.
The top pick is the VOUNOT woven polypropylene sheet, stated as 2 m by 10 m at 100 gsm, with 30 U-pegs in the bullet, at about £11.90. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 4,562 reviews. Item weight is 2.27 kg, close to 2.0 kg for 20 m² at that gsm. One UK review received no pegs, and another says the pins would not pierce the fabric. It leads this set because the gsm, the weight and the peg line are all on the listing. It is not a laboratory test.
Which ground cover is the best value?
The best value is the iropro roll, stated as 3 m by 25 m, at about £33.47, about £0.45 on each stated square metre. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 6,328 reviews. Gsm is not stated. The bullet says the sheet is permeable. One review says rain did not pass. Others in that sample used it under gravel and bark. Pegs are not included. Among scores of 70 or above, apart from the top pick, it has the lower price per stated square metre and no hard size or weight conflict.

These are the captured shelf prices, not a later re-check.
What weight of weed membrane should you buy?
Buy on a stated grams-per-square-metre figure, not on the words heavy duty. Compare it with item weight divided by the title area. Twenty square metres at 100 gsm is 2.0 kg, and one listing at 2.27 kg sits close. A 110 gsm line beside 910 g does not. An 8oz line beside a kilogram is not a measured weight, and 500 g cannot be a heavy sheet of about 100 m². If gsm is missing, you only have the parcel weight. Persistent weeds may come through a 100 g/m² sheet.
Should ground cover let water through?
Choose a permeable woven fabric if rain or plants must reach the soil. The Royal Horticultural Society says to use a permeable sheet, because a waterproof layer can cause runoff. Solid black polythene blocks water as well as light. Non-woven felt is used more often under aggregate, and it is not what these titles are. Which? also lists paper, wool and jute, which are shorter lived. A water bullet is not a laboratory result. One review says rain sat on a sheet the listing called permeable.
Can you put weed membrane under gravel in a front garden?
A permeable sheet under gravel is what the Royal Horticultural Society suggests if you do not want plants to self-seed. In England, a hard surface between the house and a highway, over 5 square metres, must be porous or drain to a permeable area. Gravel can meet that. An impermeable sheet under the gravel can work against it. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland need a local check. Overlap the joins, pin the sheet, and cover it. This is not advice for a listed building or a new drive.
Is weed membrane the same as a root barrier?
A weed membrane blocks light. A root barrier is meant to stop bamboo, knotweed or tree roots, and it is a different product. None of the rolls here is sold as that barrier. If the problem is roots rather than weeds, start with the root barrier comparison. Do not expect one season of weed membrane to finish couch grass. A compacted base, a listed building or a soakaway is work for a professional.
Can old ground cover go in the garden waste?
Do not put a polypropylene sheet in the garden-waste bin. GOV.UK simpler recycling says garden-waste collections in England do not have to take plastic. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the roll must match its description, so check width, length and weight on arrival. Woven tape frays when cut. A bare sheet goes brittle in the sun, so cover it with bark, gravel or stone. Overlap every join by about 100 to 150 mm, then pin it. Pegs are often a separate buy.
Our verdict
The top pick is the VOUNOT woven polypropylene sheet at about £11.90, stated as 2 m by 10 m at 100 gsm, with 30 U-pegs in the bullet. It leads on score: item weight 2.27 kg sits close to 2.0 kg for 20 m², guide lines are stated, and amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 4,562 reviews. One UK review received no pegs, and another says the pins would not go through the fabric. The best value is the iropro roll at about £33.47, stated as 3 m by 25 m, about £0.45 on each stated square metre, with 4.5 from 6,328 reviews. Gsm is not stated, pegs are not included, and one review says rain did not pass. The £6.87 Ram roll is not best value: its reviews are shared with the longer Ram listing, and the file states no gsm.
Among scores of 70 or above, the lower price per stated square metre with no hard size or weight conflict: about £33.47 for 3 m by 25 m, 4.5 from 6,328 reviews.
