Bird protection net comparison 2026

The best bird protection nets, compared.

Top pick: MYPURECORE 15 mm net with pegs Best value: Straame nylon net, 4 m × 10 m – Among scores of 80 or above, the lower shelf price: about £5.99, a stated 4 m by 10 m, 2 × 2 cm mesh, and 4.2 from 4,133 reviews. Updated October 2026.

A bird protection net is mesh that keeps pigeons, blackbirds and similar birds off UK fruit, vegetables, new grass seed or a pond. Covering a crop is not a licence to kill wild birds. On amazon.co.uk this set is a cut sheet, a zip bag, a drawstring bed cover, a low hooped tunnel, or fine insect mesh. A hawk kite is a scarer, not a net. The split is the hole size in millimetres, whether you can hold the sheet taut, and whether pegs or ties are in the pack. The Royal Horticultural Society says raise blueberry netting on supports and keep it taut. A drape on the fruit lets birds peck through. Mesh and fixings are set out in the [bird protection net buying guide](/hub/garden-supplies/bird-protection-net/sub/bird-protection-net-buying-guide). Section 5 prohibits using a net to kill or take wild birds. Northern Ireland is covered by the (Northern Ireland) 1985. For England, lists netting over vulnerable areas as non-lethal control that does not itself need a licence.

A bird protection net is mesh that keeps pigeons, blackbirds and similar birds off UK fruit, vegetables, new grass seed or a pond. Covering a crop is not a licence to kill wild birds.

The best bird protection nets in detail

MYPURECORE 15 mm net with pegs

Rank 1

MYPURECORE 15 mm net with pegs

∼£13

Our view

The MYPURECORE listing is a black knitted sheet with a 15 mm diamond mesh, about 20 g/m², at about £12.99, sold with plastic pegs. The title says 2 m by 10 m and the dimension line says 2 m by 5 m. It is 5.0 from 1 amazon.co.uk review. That review received 20 hooked plastic pegs, says the net looks as the listing described, and the buyer has not fitted it. The plan is to cover blueberries next season, after birds took the crop. There is no report of birds kept off, of the true length, or of a season outdoors. The material field also names polypropylene beside the HDPE bullet. The bullet says the peg count runs from 20 to 50 depending on size.

Pros

  • 15 mm diamond mesh and about 20 g/m² stated at about £12.99
  • The only UK review received 20 hooked plastic pegs
  • Reviewer says it matches the listing description

Cons

  • Title says 2 m × 10 m and the dimension line says 2 m × 5 m
  • One review, and the net has not been fitted
  • Material field also names polypropylene
  • Peg count on the listing is a range, 20 to 50

Best for: You want a 15 mm knitted sheet with pegs in the box, and you can measure it before the fruit season.

Less suitable: You are treating 5.0 from one unused review as proof it stops birds.

Mystery Code zip covers, pack of 4

Rank 2

Mystery Code zip covers, pack of 4

Our view

The Mystery Code pack is four white covers at about £8.99, each titled 100 cm by 80 cm, with a double-sided zip and a drawstring base. It is 4.6 from 13 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK texts use the zip to pick blueberries or a small cherry without pulling the whole cover off, and the drawstring to close the gap around the trunk. The mesh is stated as 0.033 inch. One cover took about ten minutes because the two zip pulls were hard to align, and a review calls the plastic zip the weak point, with uneven stitching around it. A detailed UK review describes covers around 150 cm by 120 cm, which is not the 100 cm by 80 cm title. A Vine review mentioned £20 at that time, while the shelf price on the listing is about £8.99. One pack contained small flakes of plant debris.

Pros

  • Four zip-and-drawstring covers at about £8.99
  • 4.6 from 13 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Mesh stated as 0.033 inch
  • UK reviews report birds kept off a bush or small cherry while light and rain passed
  • Zip used to pick without removing the cover

Cons

  • Zip pulls are slow to align and can snag
  • Plastic zip called the weak point, with uneven stitching in one review
  • One review describes about 150 × 120 cm rather than the 100 × 80 cm title
  • Only 13 reviews, including a Vine text

Best for: You want a small zip cover for a blueberry bush or dwarf tree, and you can spend time aligning the zip.

Less suitable: You need a large sheet, or a zip you will open every day without fuss.

DIVCHI net tunnels, pack of 2

Rank 3

DIVCHI net tunnels, pack of 2

∼£15

Our view

The DIVCHI pack is two black net tunnels at about £14.99. The dimension line says 3 m by 0.45 m, and a UK review puts the fitted size at about 3 m long, 30 cm high and 30 cm wide once the legs are pushed in. It is 4.5 from 728 amazon.co.uk reviews. The net arrives already on the metal arches, which push into the soil. Reviewers used the tunnels on seedlings, new grass seed, garlic and strawberries, and say water and light pass. After three months the same detailed review found the net coming off the frame in places, spikes sliding back into the sleeve, and lettuce hitting the roof. The middle is hard to weed without lifting an edge, and drawstring ends can sit loose in the wind, so it is not a seal against slugs. The mesh size in millimetres is not stated.

Pros

  • Two hooped tunnels at about £14.99, net already on the arches
  • 4.5 from 728 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews report birds kept off seedlings, grass seed and strawberries
  • Water and light pass through

Cons

  • Fitted height about 30 cm, so tall crops hit the roof
  • Net comes off the frame and spikes slip into the sleeve
  • Awkward to reach the middle
  • Mesh size in millimetres is not stated

Best for: You want a low tunnel for seed, strawberries or other short crops, and you can push the hoops in with a second person.

Less suitable: You are growing beans, peas or tall brassicas, or you need a slug-proof edge.

A UK review says about 30 cm high and 30 cm wide after the legs are pushed in, and about 3 m long.

Is the net already on the frame?

That review says the net arrives on the metal arches, which push into the soil. Ends use a drawstring.

What failed over three months?

The same review says the net came off the frame in places and that tall crops hit the roof.

RIFNY 15 mm net, 4 m × 12 m

Rank 4

RIFNY 15 mm net, 4 m × 12 m

∼£20

Our view

The RIFNY sheet is listed as 4 m by 12 m of HDPE at about 22 g/m², with a 15 × 15 mm mesh, at about £19.99, and the box includes 6 steel landscape staples and 100 cable ties. It is 4.5 from 81 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK texts describe it over a pond, a fruit cage, veg beds, a morello cherry against a wall, and a strawberry bed. One review says the holes are about a finger wide and stopped a heron reaching the fish. A verified review says the 4 m width only appears when the sheet is stretched hard and is closer to 3 m. On bees, one buyer says the mesh blocked them on strawberries, and another expected the holes to let bees in while keeping birds out. A separate review describes an 8 m by 15 m roll, which is not this title. UV resistance and rot resistance are listing claims.

Pros

  • Stated 4 m × 12 m HDPE, about 22 g/m², 15 × 15 mm, at about £19.99
  • 6 steel staples and 100 cable ties
  • 4.5 from 81 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews report pond, fruit-cage and heron use
  • Cuts with scissors

Cons

  • One verified review says the 4 m width is closer to 3 m unless stretched hard
  • Reviews disagree on whether bees can pass
  • One review describes an 8 × 15 m size that is not this title
  • Six staples for a sheet of this stated size

Best for: You want a heavier 15 mm sheet with ties for a pond edge or a fruit cage, and you will measure the width before you cut it.

Less suitable: You need the full 4 m width without a hard stretch, or a mesh you know will admit bees.

Six steel landscape staples and 100 cable ties, plus one net stated as 4 × 12 m.

What mesh and weight are stated?

15 × 15 mm and about 22 g/m² of HDPE. UV and rot resistance are claims, not a test result.

One verified review says the 4 m width only appears when stretched hard and is closer to 3 m. Another review says bees could not pass; a different review expected them to.

XIDEAN raised-bed cover

Rank 5

XIDEAN raised-bed cover

∼£12

Our view

The XIDEAN cover is one drawstring net for a raised bed at about £12.39. The title says 150 × 80 × 45 cm, the dimension line says 150 × 150 cm, and a bullet also says a 4 × 2 ft bed. It is 4.5 from 2 amazon.co.uk reviews. Those two texts say it fitted a raised planter, covered strawberries, and that a toggle or drawstring pulls the hem tight. One buyer found it fiddly in the wind and called about £12.99 pricey for the quality, against the £12.39 listing price. The title says nylon and the material field says HDPE. The mesh is described as ultra-fine, with no size in millimetres, and the bed is not in the box.

Pros

  • Drawstring raised-bed cover at about £12.39
  • Two UK reviews say it fitted a planter and covered strawberries
  • Toggle or drawstring holds the hem
  • Easy to take off for watering in those reviews

Cons

  • Title, dimension line and 4 × 2 ft bullet do not agree
  • Nylon in the title, HDPE in the material field
  • Only two reviews
  • Fiddly in wind, and one buyer called the quality pricey

Best for: You have a small raised bed close to the 4 × 2 ft line, and you can check the three size statements before you order.

Less suitable: You need one agreed size, a mesh stated in millimetres, or more than two reviews.

It fitted a raised bed and strawberries. One buyer found it fiddly in wind and pricey for the quality.

MEKKAPRO fine mesh, about 3 m × 3 m

Rank 6

MEKKAPRO fine mesh, about 3 m × 3 m

∼£10

Our view

The MEKKAPRO cover is fine white polyester mosquito mesh, about 3 m by 3 m, at about £9.99, and the dimension line says 3.05 m by 3.05 m while the title also says 10 ft by 10 ft. It is 4.4 from 850 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK reviewers fixed it to a frame over vegetables and strawberries, and two say water goes straight through with no run-off. Millimetres are not stated, so this is not a 15 mm bird sheet. A UK review says the cloth is slippery, will not drape, and slides off a bush unless you fix it to a frame. Cut edges fray into long strands. Pegs are not listed. One buyer had not checked it through a summer.

Pros

  • Fine polyester mesh, about 3 m × 3 m, at about £9.99
  • 4.4 from 850 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews report pests kept off veg and strawberries on a frame
  • Water goes through with no run-off in two UK reviews

Cons

  • Will not drape or stay without a frame
  • Cut edges fray
  • Mesh size in millimetres is not stated
  • No pegs listed

Best for: You already have a frame and you want fine insect mesh that also keeps birds off low veg.

Less suitable: You want to throw a sheet over a bush, or a stated 15 mm or 20 mm bird mesh.

UK reviews say water goes straight through with no run-off. The bullet claims air and water pass.

SOL green net, 2 m × 10 m

Rank 7

SOL green net, 2 m × 10 m

Our view

The SOL polyethylene sheet is sold as 2 m by 10 m at about £4.99, and UK reviewers have laid that narrow width over strawberries, pots, bulbs and new grass seed. It is 4.3 from 199 amazon.co.uk reviews. Buyers say it kept blackbirds off strawberries, and one used offcuts along a sweet-pea fence. A review puts the sheet closer to 6 m by 1 m, and another had to join two lengths. It tears if you stretch it tight, and one buyer who asked about squirrels said the stretch ripped it and it did not stop them. No pegs or ties are in the pack, and it arrives shrink-wrapped rather than on a roll. One person binned it unused because the wrap was too hard to open.

Pros

  • Stated 2 m × 10 m polyethylene sheet at about £4.99
  • 4.3 from 199 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews report blackbirds kept off strawberries
  • Narrow width used on pots, bulbs and grass seed

Cons

  • One review measured it closer to 6 m × 1 m
  • Tears if stretched tight
  • No pegs or ties in the pack
  • Did not stop a determined squirrel in one review

Best for: You want a cheap narrow sheet for strawberries, pots or seed, and you can pin it without stretching it hard.

Less suitable: You need a stated mesh in millimetres, pegs in the box, or a cover that holds squirrels off.

Straame nylon net, 4 m × 10 m

Rank 8

Straame nylon net, 4 m × 10 m

Our view

The Straame nylon sheet is listed as 4 m by 10 m with a 2 × 2 cm mesh, at about £5.99, and UK reviewers pin it over strawberries, tomatoes, beetroot and fresh seed. It is 4.2 from 4,133 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest count in this set. Buyers say it stops pigeons on fruit, and that you can cut it with scissors and staple or zip-tie it to a cane frame. An allotment review used it against rabbits and pheasants without an early rip. It is thin and springy, tangles, and several people say you want two pairs of hands to spread it. It tears if you pull it, and one review says it will not stretch out to the titled 4 m by 10 m. Pegs are not in the pack. At this price and review count it is the best value in the set for a large 2 cm sheet.

Pros

  • 2 × 2 cm nylon mesh, stated 4 m × 10 m, at about £5.99
  • 4.2 from 4,133 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews report pigeons kept off strawberries and tomatoes
  • Cuts with scissors and is stapled or zip-tied to frames
  • Allotment use against rabbits and pheasants

Cons

  • Tears if pulled
  • Tangles and is awkward to spread alone
  • One review says it will not reach 4 m × 10 m
  • No pegs or ties in the pack

Best for: You want a large 2 cm nylon sheet for a short fruit season and you can fix it to canes or a fence yourself.

Less suitable: You want pegs in the box, or a net you can tension hard without a tear.

MAIYADUO green net, 4 m × 5 m

Rank 9

MAIYADUO green net, 4 m × 5 m

Our view

The MAIYADUO polyethylene sheet is listed as 4 m by 5 m with a 15 × 15 mm mesh at about £7.99, and UK reviewers peg it over crops, new lawn seed and in one case a gazebo roof. It is 4.2 from 2,787 amazon.co.uk reviews. Reviewers say it keeps birds off plants and seed, stretches around obstacles, and one buyer reports a couple of seasons with no damage. Pegs are included, but the bullets do not state how many, and UK reviews put the count at 12 and say that is not enough for the sheet. One review measured a 5 × 4 m net at 5 × 3 m. It arrives in a tight pack rather than on a roll. One buyer called it wispy and sent it back unopened, and another expects it to tangle after the first use. With that review count, the stated 15 mm mesh and pegs in the box, it is the top pick here for a general fruit and seed sheet.

Pros

  • 15 × 15 mm polyethylene, stated 4 m × 5 m, at about £7.99
  • 4.2 from 2,787 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews report birds kept off plants and new seed
  • Plastic pegs included
  • One review reports a couple of seasons with no damage

Cons

  • Reviews say about 12 pegs, and that this is not enough
  • One review measured a 5 × 4 m sheet at 5 × 3 m
  • Arrives tightly packed, not on a roll, and is called wispy
  • Expected to tangle after the first use

Best for: You want a 15 mm green sheet with pegs for veg, fruit or new seed, and you can add fixings if the supplied pegs run out.

Less suitable: You want a heavy net on a roll, or a peg count printed in the bullets.

Solkraes zip bags, pack of 4

Rank 10

Solkraes zip bags, pack of 4

∼£14

Our view

The Solkraes pack is four zip bags, each stated as 80 cm by 100 cm, at about £13.99. It is 3.4 from 3 amazon.co.uk reviews. One review says the side zip is easier to get onto an established plant than a pull-over bag, and a toggle closes the drawstring. The mesh is called strong, with tiny holes, and water and light pass. The listing says 60-mesh and does not give a size in millimetres, while the material field says polyester and the bullets say HDPE. One of the three reviews calls the bags quite little. Another says you should not cover plants while they are flowering, because the holes are tiny. There is no long wear report, and no review tests the squirrel claim.

Pros

  • Four zip bags, stated 80 cm × 100 cm, at about £13.99
  • Zip described as easier on an established plant than a pull-over bag
  • Drawstring and toggle close the base
  • Mesh lets water and light through in the reviews

Cons

  • 3.4 from 3 reviews
  • One buyer called them quite little
  • Fine mesh flagged as blocking pollinators if used in flower
  • Polyester in the field, HDPE in the bullets

Best for: You want four small zip bags for bushes that are already past flowering.

Less suitable: You need a large sheet, or a cover you can leave on while the flowers need bees.

Muzattwi black net, 4 m × 6 m

Rank 11

Muzattwi black net, 4 m × 6 m

Our view

The Muzattwi listing is a black 4 m by 6 m sheet at about £7.59, with a stated 15 mm mesh, 10 barbed plastic pegs of 16 cm and 50 cable ties. The listing has no star line and no review text, so there is no UK report of it on fruit, seed or a pond. The material field says polyethylene and the title says nylon. The packed weight is 96 g, and the UV and pond lines are seller claims with no season of use on the listing. You cannot tell from the listing whether the sheet holds birds off or still measures 4 m by 6 m once it is opened.

Pros

  • Stated 4 m × 6 m with a 15 mm mesh at about £7.59
  • 10 pegs of 16 cm and 50 cable ties listed
  • Polyethylene named in the material field

Cons

  • No customer-review line and no review text
  • Title says nylon while the material field says polyethylene
  • 96 g for a 4 m × 6 m sheet, with no UK use report

Best for: You are buying the stated kit of pegs and ties, and you accept that the listing has no reviews.

Less suitable: You want UK reviews of birds kept off a crop before you pay.

How we compared

Eleven amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the shelf prices, star lines and UK review notes on those pages, dated 19 October 2026. There is no laboratory test. A bullet that says UV resistant, squirrel-proof or rot resistant is not scored as a measured result. Which?, the RHS and the Wildlife and Countryside Act explain the job. They are not a score for any ASIN. The highest score is the top pick, once. Among the other products scored 80 or above, the lower shelf price is best value, once. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Amazon evidence

30%

Star rating on amazon.co.uk, scaled to 20, then reduced when the count is small, plus a count band up to 10. No review line scores 0. The count multiplier on the star part is full at 100 reviews or more, 0.8 from 50 to 99, 0.4 from 3 to 19, 0.2 for one or two, and zero when there is no rating. The two parts are added and capped at 30.

2

Listing fit

35%

A mesh size in millimetres or a printed inch figure, size lines that agree, a material field that matches the title, and fixings with a count, hoops, or a built-in zip. Conflicting size lines and a fibre named two ways score lower.

3

Review outcome

20%

UK texts that describe birds kept off a named crop score higher than a listing with no reviews, or a single review that has not fitted the net. A 5.0 from one unused review is not treated as the strongest result in the set.

4

Value

15%

Shelf price in GBP against a sheet or cover that reviews say did the bird job. The lowest price does not score when the mesh is unstated and a review calls the sheet short. Straame at about £5.99 is the best value on price and review count.

Bird protection net buying guide

Choose the job before the price. A bed needs a sheet in metres. One shrub needs a bag. A pond needs overlap past the water. A low tunnel suits crops that stay near 30 cm. Stars do not replace a mesh size in millimetres, size lines that agree, or pegs you can count. Light sheets under £10 often tear if you stretch them to make up a short measure. The eleven rows are amazon.co.uk listings. None of the scores is a laboratory test.

What is a bird protection net?

A bird protection net is mesh you put over fruit, vegetables, new grass seed or a pond so pigeons, blackbirds and similar birds cannot reach the crop or the water. It is not a licence to kill or take wild birds. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds, nests in use and eggs in England, Wales and Scotland. Section 5 prohibits using a net to kill or take wild birds. Northern Ireland is covered by the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.

Best for

  • Allotment growers covering soft fruit or brassicas for a season
  • A pond edge where you can keep the net off the water

Not ideal for

  • A hawk kite, or a net you mean to use to kill birds
  • Fine mesh left on strawberries while they are in flower

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Trusting the title width

Add overlap, then use the smaller size line if the listing prints two. Reviews here put one 2 m by 10 m sheet closer to 6 m by 1 m, one 4 m width closer to 3 m, and one 5 by 4 m sheet at 5 by 3 m. Stretching a short net until it tears is the same mistake.

  2. 2

Too few pegs, or mesh on the fruit

MAIYADUO reviews say about 12 pegs is not enough. Straame and SOL list no pegs. The RHS says raise blueberry netting on canes or poles and keep it taut. A drape on the berries lets birds peck through and can tangle wildlife.

  3. 3

Fine mesh in flower, or a scarer instead of a net

The RHS says do not use insect-proof mesh on strawberries while they flower. A 15 mm hole is not proof that bees can pass: reviews on one sheet disagree. A hawk kite is a scarer, not a net. A light sheet is not a squirrel barrier because a bullet says so.

What to weigh up

Job and mesh

High

Start with the job. A bed needs a sheet in metres. One shrub needs a bag you can open to pick. A pond needs overlap past the water, and the sheet must stay off the water. A low tunnel suits crops that stay near 30 cm: one UK review of the DIVCHI tunnels puts the fitted height at about 30 cm, so tall crops hit the roof. Then read the hole. Which? points to about 2 cm to exclude small birds. In this set that is the Straame nylon sheet, listed as 2 × 2 cm.

Support, size and fixings

High

The RHS says raise blueberry netting on canes or poles and keep it taut. A drape on the fruit lets birds peck through and can tangle wildlife. Which? says check garden netting at least twice a day. Pegs, ties, hoops or a zip are part of that job. MAIYADUO includes plastic pegs and does not print a count; reviews say about 12, and that this is not enough. Straame and SOL list none. RIFNY includes 6 steel staples and 100 cable ties. Muzattwi lists 10 pegs and 50 ties and has no review line.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Soft fruit or new seed

You want a 15 mm green sheet with pegs for veg, fruit or a new lawn, and you can add fixings if the supplied pegs run out. The MAIYADUO sheet is about £7.99, stated as 4 m by 5 m, with 4.2 from 2,787 reviews. Reviews say about 12 pegs, and that this is not enough.

A pond edge or a fruit cage

You want a heavier 15 mm sheet with ties, and you will measure the width before you cut. The RIFNY HDPE sheet is about £19.99, stated as 4 m by 12 m at about 22 g/m², with 6 steel staples and 100 cable ties, and 4.5 from 81 reviews. One verified review says the 4 m width is closer to 3 m unless stretched hard.

One patio bush

You want a small zip cover for a blueberry bush or a dwarf tree, and you can spend time aligning the zip. The Mystery Code pack is four covers at about £8.99, titled 100 cm by 80 cm, with 4.6 from 13 reviews. One review describes about 150 cm by 120 cm, and the plastic zip is called the weak point.

Common questions about bird protection nets

Which bird protection net is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the MAIYADUO polyethylene sheet, stated as 4 m by 5 m with a 15 × 15 mm mesh, at about £7.99. amazon.co.uk shows 4.2 from 2,787 reviews, and UK reviews report birds kept off plants and new seed. Plastic pegs are included. Reviews put the count near 12 and say that is not enough, and one review measured a sheet short of a 5 by 4 m claim. It leads this set on score, not on a proven year of life.
Which bird protection net is the best value?
The best value is the Straame nylon sheet at about £5.99, stated as 4 m by 10 m with a 2 × 2 cm mesh. It is 4.2 from 4,133 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest count here, and UK reviews report pigeons kept off strawberries and tomatoes. Pegs are not in the pack. It tears if pulled, it tangles, and one review says it will not stretch to the titled size. The cheaper £4.99 sheet has no millimetre mesh, and a review calls it short.
How much does a bird protection net cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this set the shelf prices run from about £4.99 to about £19.99. Entry sheets, about £5 to £8, are SOL, Straame, Muzattwi and MAIYADUO: a large area of light cloth, with fixings often scarce. Mid prices, about £9 to £15, cover fine insect mesh, both zip-bag packs, the raised-bed cover, the hooped tunnels and the MYPURECORE sheet. The upper end here is the RIFNY sheet at about £19.99. Knowle PN2, a cage net off Amazon at £82.50, is a different class. These are the captured shelf prices, not a later re-check.
What mesh size should a bird net have?
Which? points to about 2 cm to exclude small birds. This set states about 15 mm, 20 mm (listed as 2 × 2 cm), or a fine insect weave. The RHS describes insect-proof mesh at about 1.3–1.4 mm or 0.8 mm, and that also blocks bees if it covers open flowers. Do not put that fine mesh on strawberries while they flower. A 15 mm hole does not, on its own, prove bees can pass: reviews on one 15 mm sheet in this set disagree. Keep the mesh taut on supports. A drape on the fruit lets birds peck through.
Is it legal to net wild birds in the UK?
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds, nests in use and eggs in England, Wales and Scotland. Section 5 prohibits using a net to kill or take wild birds, with narrow exceptions that are not a fruit cover. Northern Ireland is the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. GOV.UK, for England, lists netting over vulnerable areas as non-lethal control that does not itself need a licence. Do not net a nest that is already in use. If your aim is to kill or take birds, that needs a licence, not a product from this page.
How do you cover a pond against a heron?
The Federation of British Aquatic Societies says heron mesh should be smaller than 2.5 cm, because a neck can fit about 5 cm mesh, with a reach of about 60 cm, and the net should stay taut. Thrive's rule of thumb is at least 50 cm of overlap past the edge, and the sheet should not sag into the water. In this set the RIFNY HDPE sheet, about £19.99, is the one UK reviews describe over a pond, and one review says a heron could not reach the fish. Measure the width before you cut: one verified review says the stated 4 m is closer to 3 m unless the sheet is stretched hard.
Is horticultural fleece a bird net?
No. Fleece is a cover for cold, not a mesh with a stated hole for pigeons or a heron. A bird net in this set is a sheet, a zip bag, a bed cover, a low tunnel or fine insect mesh, chosen by hole size and fixings. If the job is frost on tender plants rather than birds on fruit, that is a separate buy: the frost protection fleece comparison. Do not treat a UV bullet, or a squirrel line on a listing, as a measured year of life or as proof the net stops squirrels.
How often should you check garden netting?
Which? says check garden netting at least twice a day. The RSPB's at-least-daily check, ideally three times, is written for netting put up to stop nesting, and the same habit matters if wildlife can tangle in a crop cover. Keep the mesh taut and off the fruit. If a bird is injured in the mesh, call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 in England and Wales, the SSPCA on 03000 999 999, or the USPCA on 028 3025 1000. Do not leave a pond net sagging in the water.

Our verdict

The top pick is the MAIYADUO polyethylene sheet at about £7.99, stated as 4 m by 5 m with a 15 × 15 mm mesh. It leads on score: 4.2 from 2,787 amazon.co.uk reviews, pegs in the pack, and UK reviews that report birds kept off plants and new seed. Reviews put the peg count near 12 and say that is not enough, and one review measured a sheet short of the title. The best value is the Straame nylon sheet at about £5.99, stated as 4 m by 10 m with a 2 × 2 cm mesh and 4.2 from 4,133 reviews. It has no pegs, it tears if pulled, and one review says it will not reach the titled size. The £4.99 sheet is not best value: its mesh has no millimetre size, and a review calls it short.
