Pond netting for a heron and for leaves

Updated: 22 October 2026

The maple behind a small garden pond is dropping, and a grey heron has already stood on the lawn at first light. Pond netting for a heron, and a cover that keeps leaves out of the water, are related jobs, though they are not one sheet left on all year. Which roll to buy for fruit or a bed is in the [bird protection net comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/bird-protection-net). Peter F. updated this on 19 October 2026 from FBAS, Thrive, Bow Garden Centre and those listings, not a lab trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Leaves or a heron

Thrive treats a winter leaf net and a longer predator cover as different jobs, because a net left over water can tangle wildlife. Fit the leaf net in autumn, before the heavy fall, and take it off once the trees are bare. A heron cover stays up for as long as the bird visits, and it has to remain taut the whole time. The shared failure is a sheet that dips into the water. Fish and frogs meet the mesh, and a heron can use the sag as a place to stand. If the heron is why you bought the net, keep the same taut span, not a loose blanket you forget until spring. How you hold a sheet tight is on how to fit bird netting.

Mesh and reach

FBAS says heron mesh should be smaller than 2.5 cm. Reach is about 60 cm from where the bird stands. If the mesh is coarser than that limit, Bow Garden Centre’s alternative is a span about 60 cm clear, or a floating net kept taut. The sheet has to land on the ground, not on the lip of the liner. Which roll suits fruit, rather than water, is on best bird netting in this set.

Overlap and sag

Thrive’s rule of thumb is at least 50 cm beyond the edge on every side, fitted before the heavy leaf fall, and pulled so the net does not sag into the water. On a pond 3 m by 2 m that means a sheet of at least 4 m by 3 m. If the listing size matches the water, you are already short. Pegs work in soil. On paving, use stones, because staples will not bite slabs. If a bird is caught, do not pull it. Call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 in England and Wales, the SSPCA on 03000 999 999 in Scotland, or the USPCA on 028 3025 1000 in Northern Ireland.

What in this set even claims a pond

None of these amazon.co.uk sheets was tested here as heron-proof. RIFNY, about £19.99 for a 15 mm sheet sold as 48 m², has UK reviews that mention a pond. One review says the holes were finger-sized and a heron did not reach the fish. That is one buyer’s report, not a trial. MAIYADUO, about £7.99, claims the net floats above the waterline, which is not the taut span Thrive and FBAS describe. Muzattwi is 4 × 6 m at about £7.59, with 10 pegs and no reviews in this capture. MEKKAPRO is fine white mesh, about 3 × 3 m at £9.99, with no pegs, so with 50 cm of overlap it only suits a very small pool. Hole size and fixings are in the bird netting buying guide.

Common questions

What mesh stops a heron putting its neck through?
FBAS recommends mesh smaller than 2.5 cm. A heron can pass its neck through holes of about 5 cm, so a wide anti-pigeon net is the wrong aperture. The mesh still has to stay taut, or a loose sheet can be pushed down to the fish. These listings were not lab-tested. About 15 mm sits inside that limit on paper. It is not proof the bird will leave, and not proof it cannot stand on the net.
How much larger than the pond must the sheet be?
Thrive’s rule of thumb is at least 50 cm past the water on every side. A pool 2 m by 1 m needs a sheet of at least 3 m by 2 m, and more if the bank slopes or you lift the net on a frame. A title that matches the water leaves no skirt to peg.
Can the net sit on the water?
Thrive says the net should not sag into the water. FBAS wants it taut so a heron cannot weigh it down. Bow allows a floating net, still kept so the bird cannot press it to the fish, or a span about 60 cm clear if the mesh is coarser than 2.5 cm. MAIYADUO’s claim that the net floats above the waterline is not that taut span. If the middle rests on the surface, lift it.
Will crop netting from this set work on a pond?
RIFNY, MAIYADUO and Muzattwi are about 15 mm, so the hole size can suit a heron if the net stays taut and overlapped. They are still crop mesh. RIFNY has a pond comment in reviews. MAIYADUO’s float claim conflicts with the taut-net advice. Muzattwi has no reviews here, and MEKKAPRO is a small square with no pegs. None of them is a tested heron-proof product.
Is a heron net a licence issue?
A heron is a wild bird. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects it in England, Wales and Scotland, and section 5 bans using a net to kill or take a bird. GOV.UK for England lists netting over a vulnerable area as non-lethal control that does not itself need a licence. Northern Ireland uses the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. If a bird is trapped, call the rescue line for your nation rather than cutting first.
