Frost protection fleece comparison 2026

The best frost protection fleeces, compared.

Top pick: P dot Wolf 18 gsm fleece, stated 2 m × 20 m Best value: Ambassador 17 g/m² fleece, 20 m × 1 m – Lowest shelf price with a large UK file: about £5.86 for 20 m by 1 m at 17 g/m², 4.4 from 1,904 reviews. Updated October 2026.

Frost protection fleece is light non-woven cloth for a forecast frost. In a UK garden you buy a sheet for a bed, a row or a new lawn, or a jacket for one pot. Judge it by the grams per square metre in the title, by a width you can peg with spare at the edges, and by whether rain and air still reach the plants. About 17 to 18 g/m² is the light grade. About 30 g/m² is the heavier grade. Porous cloth lets rain and air through. Pegs, soil or a drawstring hold the edges. An air frost is air at or below 0°C about a metre up, and a ground frost is a cold surface even if the air is milder. Fleece does not move tender bedding from early May in the south to June in Scotland. Lift it off flowers by day. Heavier fleece is about 2°C, 17 g sits just below freezing, and 30 g is around −3°C. Choose gsm, width and sheet or jacket in the [frost protection fleece buying guide](/hub/garden-supplies/frost-protection-fleece/sub/frost-protection-fleece-buying-guide).

The best frost protection fleeces in detail

P dot Wolf 18 gsm fleece, stated 2 m × 20 m

Rank 1

P dot Wolf 18 gsm fleece, stated 2 m × 20 m

∼£20

Our view

P dot Wolf lists an 18 gsm sheet as 2 m by 20 m at £20. amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 68 reviews, with 25 UK texts in the file. Buyers call the quality excellent and say it does the job, including over an overseeded lawn. A bullet claims protection down to −5/−6 and says the fleece is thicker than standard fleece, while the title weight is 18 gsm. One UK buyer says the 2 m width arrived as 1 m folded in half and felt thin, so they kept it doubled. That review also says it did not come on a roll, and a bullet says the fleece is folded to 1 m. Some reviews had not used the sheet yet.

Pros

  • Stated 2 m × 20 m of 18 gsm fleece
  • 4.7 from 68 reviews, with “does the job” recurring
  • Bought for an overseeded lawn
  • Pegs, soil or staples are named as anchors

Cons

  • £20, and one buyer kept it doubled because it seemed thin
  • Not on a roll; a bullet says it is folded to 1 m
  • A −5/−6 claim and “thicker than standard” sit on an 18 gsm title

Best for: You want a long light sheet for a lawn or rows, and you will unfold the width before you peg it.

Less suitable: You want 30 gsm or heavier, a roll, or a frost figure that matches the stated weight.

Common questions

What weight is on the title?

18 gsm. A bullet also says the fleece is thicker than standard fleece and protects to −5/−6. A UK review calls it thin.

Is it 2 m wide?

The title says 2 m by 20 m. The bullet says folded to 1 m. A UK review says it arrived 1 m wide, folded in half, and not on a roll.

How does the listing say to hold it down?

With pegs, soil or staples. It says light, air and rain are admitted.

Halatool 30 gsm fleece, stated 3 m × 10 m

Rank 2

Halatool 30 gsm fleece, stated 3 m × 10 m

∼£18

Our view

Halatool’s title says a 30 gsm sheet, 3 m by 10 m, at £18.29. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 11 reviews, with 10 UK texts in the file. Buyers call it good quality and simple protection for seedlings, and one bought it for an early-flowering pear and frosts into May. Several UK buyers describe 2 m by 5 m, not the 3 m by 10 m title, and one says the piece is 3 m by 5 m. The cloth is called quite thin because a hand shows through. One review says pegs or fixings are still needed if you put it on hoops. A bullet claims cold winds down to −5 to −6°C, which is listing text, and the size conflict is what repeats in the UK texts.

Pros

  • 30 gsm is stated in the title and a bullet
  • Used for seedlings and an early-flowering pear
  • One review calls it tear-resistant against rats and birds

Cons

  • Several UK reviews describe 2 m × 5 m, not 3 m × 10 m
  • Called thin because a hand shows through
  • 11 reviews in total, and pegs are still needed on hoops

Best for: You can measure the sheet when it arrives and you only need a modest piece for seedlings.

Less suitable: You are buying it as a guaranteed 3 m by 10 m cover.

Common questions

What size is on the title?

The title and the model number say 3 m by 10 m at 30 gsm. Several UK reviews describe a 2 m by 5 m piece.

What frost figure does the bullet use?

A bullet says cold winds down to −5 to −6°C. That is the listing claim.

Does it need pegs?

The bullets do not name a closure. One UK review says pegs or fixings are needed to attach it to hoops.

MIXC fleece jackets, two 120 cm × 180 cm

Rank 3

MIXC fleece jackets, two 120 cm × 180 cm

∼£17

Our view

Across 1,031 amazon.co.uk reviews, rated 4.5, this pair of MIXC jackets is listed at 120 cm by 180 cm and £16.99. United Kingdom reviewers describe a zip as well as the pull cord, and one shorter gardener found that easier than a drawstring-only cover. The fabric is called thick next to other covers they had used. One buyer left a cover on a young eucalyptus through frosts, and another found the covers still in good condition the following winter. A buyer also unzipped the two covers to span more than one plant. The listing does not give a gsm figure: a bullet says 1.77 oz per square yard and recommends 3–8°F of freeze protection, which is the seller’s wording. On these scores it is the top pick in this set. Specific faults are scarce in the UK texts, though a few reviews are only a word or two.

Pros

  • Two 120 cm × 180 cm covers at £16.99
  • UK reviews praise a zip and a pull cord
  • One cover stayed on a young eucalyptus through frosts
  • A review reports the covers still sound the following winter

Cons

  • No gsm; weight is given as 1.77 oz per square yard
  • The 3–8°F freeze line is the seller’s wording
  • The zip is in UK reviews; the extracted bullets name the drawstring

Best for: You want a tall jacket for a shrub or young tree, with a cord and, in the UK reviews, a zip.

Less suitable: You need a stated gsm, a sheet for a bed, or a freeze line printed in Celsius.

The bullets name a drawstring. UK reviews also describe a zip and a pull cord.

Is the weight in gsm?

No. A bullet says 1.77 oz per square yard and 40–60% light transmission. It does not print gsm.

What frost figure is in the bullet?

The bullet says 3–8°F of freeze protection. That figure is in Fahrenheit on the UK listing.

GardenGloss 17 g/m² fleece, 1.5 m × 10 m

Rank 4

GardenGloss 17 g/m² fleece, 1.5 m × 10 m

Our view

GardenGloss lists a 17 g/m² sheet, 1.5 m by 10 m, at £7.99. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.5 from 330 reviews. In the stored file only six texts are marked United Kingdom, against 17 from Germany, so the notes here use the UK lines only. Those call 10 m by 1.5 m an ample amount at the price. One UK review calls it thin but strong and breathable, and so far keeping birds off, and says a winter had not yet been seen on it. Other UK lines are short praise or say the fleece was unused. A bullet says it is breathable and water-permeable and that you can cut it with scissors. No UK tear or short-length complaint is in the texts read.

Pros

  • 17 g/m², 1.5 m × 10 m, at £7.99
  • Scissors and a water-permeable claim are in the bullets
  • A UK review calls it thin but strong, and so far keeping birds off

Cons

  • Only six UK texts in the stored file
  • Called thin in that same review
  • Several UK lines are unused or a short “looks good”

Best for: You want a 10 m light sheet at this price, and you treat 330 as the listing total rather than as UK write-ups.

Less suitable: You want a UK file that has already been through a winter, or a heavier gsm.

Lepat fleece, 2 m × 5 m

Rank 5

Lepat fleece, 2 m × 5 m

Our view

The Lepat sheet is listed at £7.79. The title says 35 gsm and 2 m by 5 m, while a bullet says 30 gsm non-woven polypropylene. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 90 reviews, and 28 United Kingdom texts are in the saved listing. Reviewers call it thick rather than the thin stuff, and one says water still comes through while heat is retained. Buyers use it on raised beds and say it is easy to cut. A bullet claims protection down to −5/−6 and says you can layer it; one UK review repeats that degree line as the maker’s wording. One UK review describes a 3 m by 5 m piece, not the 2 m by 5 m title. Some of the other reviews are only a short line of praise, or the sheet had not been used yet.

Pros

  • £7.79 for a sheet reviewers call thick
  • A UK review says water still comes through
  • Scissors are named, and layering is claimed
  • Used on raised beds

Cons

  • The title says 35 gsm and a bullet says 30 gsm
  • One UK review describes 3 m × 5 m, not 2 m × 5 m
  • The −5/−6 line is a listing claim

Best for: You want a small sheet that reviewers call thick, for a raised bed, and you can check the gsm and the cut size.

Less suitable: You need one agreed weight, a 10 m run, or a jacket.

Ambassador 17 g/m² fleece, 20 m × 1 m

Rank 6

Ambassador 17 g/m² fleece, 20 m × 1 m

Our view

The Ambassador sheet is 20 m by 1 m at 17 g/m², listed at £5.86. Across 1,904 amazon.co.uk reviews, rated 4.4, buyers use that length on several plants and over a newly sown lawn to limit birds taking seed. UK texts also say it works as a frost cover. It arrives folded, not on a roll, and reviewers say that makes wrapping harder. The cloth is called thin, and one buyer says it is flimsy enough that two or three layers are needed. The specification says it is not water resistant, while a bullet says the porous material allows direct watering. No frost temperature is printed. It is the best value in this set on shelf price and the size of the review file.

Pros

  • 20 m × 1 m at £5.86
  • 4.4 from 1,904 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Used as a frost cover and over new lawn seed
  • A bullet claims you can water through the porous sheet

Cons

  • Arrives folded, not on a roll
  • Called thin; one buyer uses two or three layers
  • No frost temperature on the listing

Best for: You want a long 17 g/m² run for beds, plants or a newly sown lawn, and you can peg a folded sheet.

Less suitable: You want a heavier cloth, a roll you can unwind, or a jacket with a zip.

DazSpirit fleece jackets, four 60 cm × 80 cm

Rank 7

DazSpirit fleece jackets, four 60 cm × 80 cm

∼£15

Our view

DazSpirit sells four jackets at £14.99, each listed at 60 cm by 80 cm. amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 404 reviews, and 50 UK texts are in the file. Reviewers use the drawstring on pots that are too heavy to move, and one says saplings survived a winter. An olive and a small fig are mentioned as still doing well. The bullets do not say a zipper. At least two UK reviews say the covers they received had no zipper, while other UK reviews mention a zip. One buyer overestimated the 60 cm by 80 cm size and could still gather it in. Gsm is not stated, and no repeated tear shows up in the texts read.

Pros

  • Four covers at £14.99
  • Drawstring holds them on pots in the wind
  • UK reviews cite saplings, an olive and a small fig
  • 4.4 from 404 reviews

Cons

  • 60 cm × 80 cm is small for a larger shrub
  • A zip is absent in some UK deliveries and present in others
  • No gsm figure

Best for: You have several small pots, saplings or a compact olive or fig, and you will use the drawstring.

Less suitable: You are covering a shrub taller than 80 cm, or you need a zip on every cover.

How large is each cover?

Does the listing say water can pass?

A bullet says air and water can penetrate the non-woven fabric. Gsm is not stated.

OAHAO 40 gsm fleece, 2 m × 5 m

Rank 8

OAHAO 40 gsm fleece, 2 m × 5 m

Our view

This OAHAO sheet is listed as 40 gsm and 2 m by 5 m, at £9.38. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.4 from 336 reviews. UK texts call it thick and water permeable, so rain still reaches the soil, and one winter it was held through snow, rain, frost and ice. A buyer used it for early sweetcorn and reported a few degrees warmer than the outside air. Another kept a potted mint alive over winter on a cane tent, and one review says olive trees were unaffected on cold nights. It arrives folded rather than on a roll, so unravelling is awkward. One UK review says the measurements were short, though that review mixes 10 m with 5 by 2 m and ends at 9.5 m by 93 cm. A bullet claims frosts down to 24°F; that figure is listing text.

Pros

  • 40 gsm sheet stated as 2 m × 5 m
  • UK reviews call it thick, with water still reaching the soil
  • Held through snow, rain, frost and ice in one winter
  • Easy to cut; one buyer weighed it down with bricks

Cons

  • Folded pack, not a roll
  • One UK review disputes the measurements, with mixed figures
  • The 24°F frost line is a bullet, not a measured result

Best for: You want a heavier small sheet for a bed, pots or a cane tent, and you will check the cut length.

Less suitable: You need 10 m or more in one piece, or a cover that arrives on a roll.

HAFRILY fleece jackets, two 120 cm × 180 cm

Rank 9

HAFRILY fleece jackets, two 120 cm × 180 cm

∼£11

Our view

HAFRILY sells two jackets listed at 120 cm by 180 cm, at £10.99. amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 from 5 reviews, and only three UK texts are in the file. Those call the covers well made. One says zips made fitting easier on young trees grown from seed, and one says strong wind had not ripped them. The larger listed size is what that buyer wanted so the plants were fully covered. A bullet says the covers are waterproof, which is a different claim from a porous fleece, and the three UK texts neither confirm nor deny it. Gsm is not stated, and a bullet also lists 23.6 by 31.5 inches as another size. The sample is too small to show a repeated fault.

Pros

  • Two covers listed at 120 cm × 180 cm
  • One UK review says zips made fitting easier
  • Strong wind had not ripped them in one review

Cons

  • 4.1 from only five reviews, three of them UK texts
  • The waterproof bullet is not checked by those texts
  • No gsm figure

Best for: You want to try two tall jackets and you accept a five-review file.

Less suitable: You need a porous sheet with a known gsm, or a rating based on more than five reviews.

CHEOAR 30 gsm fleece, 9 m × 3 m

Rank 10

CHEOAR 30 gsm fleece, 9 m × 3 m

∼£16

Our view

CHEOAR lists one 30 gsm sheet, 9 m by 3 m, at £15.99. There is no customer-review line and no review text in the saved listing, so there is no UK account of a winter under this cloth. The title and a bullet say about 30 gsm non-woven polypropylene. A bullet says sunlight, air and rain pass, and that light frosts and light snow are softened, with no degree figure. The listing says you peg it with soil, pegs or clips and dry it before you fold it away. The product-dimensions line reads 944.88 by 33.53 by 30.48 cm, which does not match 9 m by 3 m. Scissors are named. Until reviews exist, the size and the frost wording stay seller text.

Pros

  • 30 gsm and 9 m × 3 m are in the title
  • Rain, air and sunlight are claimed to pass
  • Scissors, and pegs or clips, are named

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk review line
  • The dimensions line does not match the title size
  • No frost temperature

Best for: You want a large 30 gsm sheet as listed, and you will measure it, knowing it has no reviews in this file.

Less suitable: You want UK reviews of a winter under the fleece before you pay £15.99.

Flankor fleece jackets, two 100 cm × 120 cm

Rank 11

Flankor fleece jackets, two 100 cm × 120 cm

Our view

Flankor lists two jackets at £8.99, and the bullets say each cover is 100 cm by 120 cm, with a side zipper and a bottom drawstring. There is no customer-review line and no review text, so the zip, the cord and the frost claim are unchecked in this file. Gsm is not stated. A bullet says air and moisture circulate and that the covers can be washed, folded and reused. The product-dimensions line says 5 by 2 by 1 cm, which does not match 100 cm by 120 cm. The listing describes one medium plant or several small pots. First available in the file is 12 August 2026.

Pros

  • Two covers at £8.99
  • A side zip and a bottom drawstring are in the title and bullets
  • 100 cm × 120 cm is the bullet size

Cons

  • No reviews in the saved listing
  • No gsm
  • The dimensions line says 5 × 2 × 1 cm

Best for: You want a small zipped pair at this price and you will check the size on arrival, with no reviews to go on.

WsiQxuc horticultural fleece

Rank 12

WsiQxuc horticultural fleece

Our view

WsiQxuc lists one fleece at £9.49. The bullets say 2 m by 10 m and call it a garden fleece roll, with light and moisture getting through and no frost temperature. Gsm is not stated, and the material-type field is the digit 1. The item-dimensions line says 10 cm by 10 cm. There is no customer-review line and no review text. Wind, cutting and how many seasons it lasts are questions in the saved listing without answers. The rank stored from the listing is 14,434 in Garden. The price is low for a stated 2 m by 10 m piece only if that size is what arrives.

Pros

  • Bullets state 2 m × 10 m at £9.49
  • Light and moisture penetration are claimed
  • Bullets describe a roll for lawn seed and vegetables

Cons

  • No reviews and no gsm
  • The dimensions line says 10 cm × 10 cm
  • Wind, cutting and lifespan are asked and not answered

Best for: You are comparing a cheap listed 2 m by 10 m piece, and you can return it if the size is wrong.

Does the listing answer how many seasons it lasts?

That question is printed in the saved listing and is not answered.

Are there reviews?

The saved listing has no customer-review line and no review text.

How we compared

Twelve amazon.co.uk listings were scored from shelf prices, star lines and United Kingdom review texts captured on 19 October 2026. This is not a laboratory frost test. A gsm, a size, a zip and a frost line stay the seller’s wording unless a UK review contradicts them. The top pick is the highest score. Best value is the lowest shelf price among listings with a large UK review file, and it is a different listing. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Amazon evidence

25%

The amazon.co.uk star line, then how many United Kingdom texts are actually stored. A listing with no review line scores 0 on this part. A high star line with only a handful of UK texts is capped.

2

Spec fit

20%

A stated gsm, a size that agrees with itself, and a water line that matches porous fleece. Conflicting gsm figures, a missing gsm, a dimensions line that contradicts the title, or a waterproof claim, all deduct.

3

Review outcome

35%

UK comments that describe a cover left on through frost, snow or a following winter, when the file is large enough to read. Thin cloth, a folded pack, a missing zip, and a size several buyers do not recognise, deduct.

4

Value

20%

Shelf price in GBP against the job, only where a UK review file is large enough to read. Listings with no reviews score 0 here. The lowest shelf price with a large UK file takes this block.

Frost protection fleece buying guide

Choose the weight, the width and the shape before the star line. A light sheet, a heavier sheet and a jacket do different jobs. Then read whether rain can pass, and how you will hold the edges. The twelve rows are amazon.co.uk listings dated 19 October 2026. There is no laboratory frost test.

What is frost protection fleece?

Frost protection fleece is light non-woven cloth for a night when frost is forecast. In a UK garden or on an allotment you use a sheet over a bed, a row or a newly sown lawn, or a drawstring jacket on one pot or shrub. It is not polythene. The useful cloth lets rain and air through, so the soil is not sealed under a wet skin. You judge a piece by the grams per square metre in the title, by a width you can peg with spare at the edges, and by whether the water line matches that porous job.

Best for

  • Beds, rows and a new lawn, if you can peg a porous sheet
  • One pot, olive, fig or young shrub, if a jacket cinches and comes off by day

Not ideal for

  • A large fruit tree, or a banana or tree-fern crown that must stay dry
  • A buyer who treats a −5°C bullet on 17–18 g cloth as a measured result

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Trusting a −5°C bullet on light cloth

A −5°C or −6°C line on 17 or 18 g cloth is a listing sentence. UK growing guidance puts 17 g just below freezing, 30 g around −3°C, and heavier fleece at about 2°C. Stars do not prove the degree.

  2. 2

    Ignoring a size clash

A title can say 3 m by 10 m while UK reviews describe 2 m by 5 m. Another title says 2 m wide while a review says the cloth arrived folded to about 1 m. Measure the piece. Do not average the two figures.

  3. 3

Leaving it loose, or on flowers all day

Loose edges lift. Fleece left on flowering plants through the day blocks pollinators. A zip is not guaranteed, and a folded pack is not a roll. Take fruit covers off by day.

What to weigh up

Weight, shape and size

High

Start with the grams per square metre printed in the title. About 17 to 18 g/m² is the light grade: more light, less margin, and a cloth that public notes say may only last a year. About 30 g/m² is the heavier grade those notes describe. A 40 gsm title is heavier still. If the title says 35 gsm and a bullet says 30 gsm, keep both numbers. If a jacket prints no gsm, or prints ounces per square yard, leave the gsm blank. A −5/−6 bullet does not fill that blank. Then choose the shape.

Water, closure and frost claims

High

Porous fleece is the point, set against polythene. Rain and air should still reach the plants. If the specification says the sheet is not water resistant and a bullet says you can water through it, keep both lines. A waterproof bullet on a jacket is a different product claim, and a small UK file may neither confirm nor deny it. Hold a sheet with pegs, soil, bricks or staples. Hold a jacket with the drawstring.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Raised beds

You want a heavier small sheet and you will check the cut. The OAHAO sheet is about £9.38, stated as 40 gsm and 2 m by 5 m, with 4.4 from 336 reviews. UK texts call it thick and water permeable, and one winter it was held through snow, rain, frost and ice. One UK review disputes the measurements.

One shrub or pot

You want a tall jacket you can take off in the morning. The MIXC pair is about £16.99, two covers listed at 120 cm by 180 cm, with 4.5 from 1,031 reviews. UK texts describe a zip and a pull cord. One cover stayed on a young eucalyptus through frosts. Gsm is not printed.

New lawn or early seed

You want metres of light porous cloth. The Ambassador sheet is about £5.86, 17 g/m² and 20 m by 1 m, with 4.4 from 1,904 reviews. Buyers use it as a frost cover and over new lawn seed. It arrives folded, not on a roll, and reviewers call it thin.

Common questions about frost protection fleeces

Which frost protection fleece is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the MIXC pair at about £16.99. Each jacket is listed at 120 cm by 180 cm. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 1,031 reviews. UK texts describe a zip as well as the pull cord, one cover left on a young eucalyptus through frosts, and covers still sound the next winter. Gsm is not printed. A bullet says 1.77 oz per square yard and 3–8°F of freeze protection. That degree line is the seller’s wording, not a result from this comparison.
Which frost protection fleece is the best value?
The best value is the Ambassador sheet at about £5.86. It is 17 g/m² and 20 m by 1 m, with 4.4 from 1,904 amazon.co.uk reviews. Buyers use it as a frost cover and over a newly sown lawn. It arrives folded, not on a roll, and reviewers call it thin. One buyer uses two or three layers. No frost temperature is printed. It is the lowest shelf price in this set with a large UK review file.
How much does frost protection fleece cost?
On these amazon.co.uk listings, captured on 19 October 2026, shelf prices run from about £5.86 to about £20. Under £10 are the long light sheet, two smaller sheets, a small jacket pair, a 40 gsm sheet and one unreviewed 2 m by 10 m listing. From £10 to £17 are two jacket listings, a four-pack of small jackets and a 9 m by 3 m sheet. About £18.29 and about £20 are the top of this set. The £20 listing is 18 gsm, not a heavier grade. Prices move.
What gsm of frost protection fleece should you buy?
Read the grams per square metre in the title. About 17 to 18 g/m² is the light grade. About 30 g/m² is the heavier grade UK growing guidance describes, with 17 g just below freezing and 30 g around −3°C. Heavier fleece in that guidance is about 2°C of protection. One sheet here is titled 40 gsm. Another prints 35 gsm in the title and 30 gsm in a bullet. Several jackets print no gsm. One pair gives 1.77 oz per square yard instead. Do not treat a −5°C bullet on 17 or 18 g cloth as the weight.
Should you buy a fleece sheet or a jacket?
A sheet is for a bed, a row or seed. A jacket is for one pot or shrub. A width of about 1 m is a poor cover for a wide bed, because you need spare cloth to peg. This set has sheets from a short 2 m by 5 m piece to titles of 20 m, and four jacket listings. Do not assume a zip. On one four-pack, some UK deliveries include a zip and some do not. Do not assume a roll. Several sheets arrive folded.
Can you trust a −5°C claim on frost fleece?
Treat −5°C, −6°C, 24°F and 3–8°F lines as listing bullets. RHS guidance puts heavier fleece at about 2°C, and Gardeners’ World puts 17 g just below freezing and 30 g around −3°C. A trade page for 30 g cloth cites about −2°C to −3°C. Those figures are not a −6°C promise. Secure the edges. Stars do not prove the gsm or the size, and titles and UK reviews clash on more than one listing here.
Will frost fleece keep plants safe all winter?
Fleece is for a forecast frost, not for heating a structure through a UK winter. Double the layer on the worst night, lift covers in a mild spell, and take fruit covers off by day. Large trees are impractical to cover. Trapped damp rots banana and tree-fern crowns. Tender bedding still waits until early May in London and the south-west, and until June in Scotland and upland areas. A walk-in cover is a different product, set out in the polytunnel comparison.

Our verdict

The top pick is the MIXC pair of jackets at about £16.99. It has the highest score in this set: two covers listed at 120 cm by 180 cm, 4.5 from 1,031 amazon.co.uk reviews, and UK texts that describe a zip and a pull cord, a young eucalyptus left covered through frosts, and covers still sound the next winter. No gsm is printed. A bullet gives 1.77 oz per square yard and 3–8°F of freeze protection, which is the seller’s wording. The best value is the Ambassador 17 g/m² sheet, 20 m by 1 m, at about £5.86, with 4.4 from 1,904 reviews. Buyers use that length as a frost cover and over new lawn seed. It arrives folded, not on a roll, and reviewers call it thin.
