An adjusting screw is a wood screw that fixes a timber batten to a wooden substrate and then sets the gap. You drive it in, then turn it back so grooves under the head, or a clip that stays in the timber, lift the batten. In the UK the same words also cover threaded furniture feet, which level a rocking leg. A foot is not a cheaper batten screw. You tell a suitable timber screw by its length, the named drive and a real adjustment method. Match the length to the batten and the gap. Drives from different packs are not interchangeable, and a setting tool is often sold separately. A coating meant for sheltered outdoors is the wrong fixing for a deck in the rain. For a foot, measure the metric thread already in the leg. If piece count, finish or length disagree, measure what arrives. A structural screw specified under BS EN 14592, a loaded floor, or a replacement window needs the specified fixing or a registered installer. Setting the gap is covered in [how to level battens](/hub/screws-and-accessories/adjusting-screws/sub/adjusting-screws-how-to-level-battens).

Question 1 of 2

What are you fixing?

The best adjusting screws in detail

Uni-Fine M8 swivel foot

Rank 1

Uni-Fine M8 swivel foot

Our view

Uni-Fine lists four M8 furniture feet at about £7.99. The title says M8 x 50 mm, a 40 mm base, a maximum 15 degree tilt and 450 kg. The model token says M8×40, and a dimension line says 8 x 8 x 35 mm. The listing line is 4.9 from 21 reviews, and the raw file has no UK-marked review. Bullets say stainless steel and polyamide with a nickel-plated surface, while the material field says carbon steel and nylon. The 450 kg figure does not say whether it is one foot or the set of four, and there is no test report in the file. Reviews mention a 13 mm spanner. Open this listing when the floor is uneven and the hole is M8, and treat both the material and the load as unresolved.

Pros

  • Title states a 15 degree tilt and a swivel base
  • M8 thread named in the title
  • 4.9 from 21 reviews
  • About £7.99 for a stated pack of four

Cons

  • Stainless steel and carbon steel both appear
  • 450 kg is not split per foot or per set
  • Length lines conflict across 50 mm, M8×40 and 35 mm
  • No UK-marked review in the raw file

Best for: You need an M8 foot that states a tilt, and you will not treat 450 kg or stainless as settled.

Less suitable: You need a confirmed load, a rubber pad, UK review text, or a timber adjusting screw.

Common questions

Does the listing say the foot tilts?

Yes. The title says a maximum 15 degree tilt, and a bullet describes a spherical head with 360 degree rotation for uneven ground.

Is the stated material stainless steel?

The bullets say stainless steel and polyamide with a nickel-plated surface. The material field says carbon steel and nylon. The raw file does not resolve that.

Is 450 kg per foot?

The listing states 450 kg and does not say whether that is one foot or the set of four. There is no test report in the raw file.

JJQHYC M10 x 50 mm

Rank 2

JJQHYC M10 x 50 mm

∼£10

Our view

JJQHYC lists four M10 x 50 mm furniture feet with a 38 mm base, at about £9.99. The bullets name a nylon pad and galvanised metal, and they do not state a tilt. The listing line is 4.5 from 119 reviews. Short UK comments in the file say a wobbly table was made solid and rusty workbench feet were replaced. One UK review says not good quality and gives no detail. No maximum weight is stated, and outdoor use is unanswered. A dimension line also says 10 x 10 x 50 mm, and the unit-count field says 1 while the title says four. This is the M10 option when the hole measures M10 and you can accept an unknown load.

Pros

  • Title states M10 x 50 mm and a 38 mm base
  • 4.5 from 119 reviews
  • UK comments mention a table and a workbench
  • Bullets name a nylon base and galvanised metal

Cons

  • No stated load
  • One UK review says not good quality, with no detail
  • Unit-count field says 1
  • No tilt stated, and outdoor use is unanswered

Best for: You are replacing M10 feet on a table or a light workbench and you do not need a tilt.

Less suitable: You need a stated capacity, an M6 or M8 hole, or a batten adjusting screw.

Common questions

What size does the JJQHYC listing state?

Four feet, thread M10 x 50 mm, base diameter 38 mm. A dimension line also says 10 x 10 x 50 mm.

Does it state a maximum weight?

No. The question is in the raw file and has no answer. Outdoor use is unanswered as well.

What do the UK reviews in the file mention?

Short comments say a wobbly table was made solid and rusty workbench feet were replaced. One UK review says not good quality and gives no detail. The listing line is 4.5 from 119.

TIANLIN M6 x 16 mm

Rank 3

TIANLIN M6 x 16 mm

Our view

TIANLIN lists four M6 screw-in furniture feet with a zinc-plated core and a 32 mm rubber pad, at about £6.99. You screw the stud into the leg to change the height, which makes this a furniture foot rather than a batten adjusting screw. The listing line is 4.4 from 287 reviews, and the raw file includes UK-marked comments. Some reviews on the same ASIN describe M8 studs, eight feet or a 38 mm pad, so the title and the parcel have not always matched. No load is stated, and outdoor use is an unanswered question. One bullet says screw the M6 thread in and add a nut if needed, while another says drill a 5/16 inch hole and fit a T-nut. For a light table or speaker whose hole measures M6, this is the best value in the set, after you check the stud.

Pros

  • About £6.99 for four stated M6 feet with a 32 mm rubber pad
  • 4.4 from 287 reviews, with UK-marked comments in the file
  • Screw-in height change for a rocking leg
  • Lower shelf price than the timber boxes

Cons

  • No stated load
  • Some reviews describe M8 studs, eight feet or a 38 mm pad
  • Two different assembly methods in the same listing
  • Outdoor use is unanswered

Best for: You have an M6 hole in a light piece of furniture and you will measure the stud that arrives.

Less suitable: You need a stated load, a tilt, an M8 or M10 hole, or a timber batten screw.

Common questions

What thread does this TIANLIN listing state?

M6, in a 4 pack, with a 32 mm rubber base and a stated thread length of 16 mm. Some reviews on the same ASIN describe M8 studs, eight feet or a 38 mm pad, so measure what arrives.

Does the listing state a load?

No. Outdoor use is also an unanswered question in the raw file.

How does the listing say you fit them?

One bullet says screw the M6 thread into the leg and add a nut if needed, with no special tools. Another line says drill a 5/16 inch hole and fit a T-nut. Both are in the raw file.

SPAX 6 x 160 mm

Rank 4

SPAX 6 x 160 mm

∼£27

Our view

The SPAX box is titled as 100 flat-head T30 adjusting screws, 6 x 160 mm, with retaining grooves, 4CUT and WIROX, at about £26.95. The bullets describe levelling wooden substructures on solid wood, derived timber and engineered boards, and they say the flat head countersinks. SPAX’s flyer row for this length lists a maximum wood thickness of 40 mm and a maximum distance of 120 mm. The listing line is 4.1 from 27 reviews, and the review texts in the raw file are marked Germany. One of those reviews says 6 x 80 mm arrived, beside model number 0161010600803. The finish field says untreated while the title says WIROX, and other lines say 8 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm, #0-80 and M80. For a sheltered timber batten that needs this length and a T30 driver, it is the top pick in the set if you measure what arrives.

Pros

  • Title states 100 screws, 6 x 160 mm, T30 and retaining grooves
  • Flyer row allows up to 40 mm of wood and 120 mm of distance
  • Piece count agrees with the title
  • Bullets name a wooden substructure and a countersinking head

Cons

  • Finish field says untreated while the title says WIROX
  • Dimension and thread fields include 8 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm, #0-80 and M80
  • Review texts are marked Germany, and one says 6 x 80 mm arrived
  • No bit is stated in the box

Best for: You are fixing a timber batten up to 40 mm thick, you need up to 120 mm of gap, and you have a T30 driver.

Less suitable: You need a shorter screw, a TX25 bit, a rained-on deck, or a furniture foot.

Common questions

What does the SPAX listing say the screw is for?

The bullets say continuous levelling of wooden substructures on solid wood, derived timber products and engineered wood boards. They also say the flat head countersinks and that pre-drilling depends on the wood.

Which driver does the title name?

T-STAR plus T30. The fischer listing in this comparison names TX25, so the bits are not the same.

Do the specification lines match the title?

No. The title says WIROX and 6 x 160 mm. The finish field says untreated, the dimensions say 8 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm, and other fields say #0-80 and M80. One review says 6 x 80 mm arrived.

fischer FAFS 5 x 80

Rank 5

fischer FAFS 5 x 80

∼£27

Our view

The fischer listing is titled FAFS 5.0 x 80 mm, TX25 and zinc plated, at about £27.42. Included components says 100 adjusting screws, while the piece-count field says 1, and the box weight is 1.14 kg. fischer’s UK page for this size lists a maximum distance of 60 mm, a 45 mm thread and a minimum timber thickness of 20 mm, and it describes a setting tool that seats the clip flush. That tool is not in the amazon included line. The listing line is 3.6 from 16 reviews, and the four review texts in the raw file are marked Germany. They describe drives rounding, heads camming in softwood and poor hold, with one note about a timber dry-lining frame. The thread field says UNC, which fights the metric title. At almost the same price as the SPAX box, this is the shorter TX25 option only when the gap stays within 60 mm and you already have the setting tool.

Pros

  • Title states 5.0 x 80 mm, TX25 and zinc plate
  • Manufacturer page gives a 60 mm maximum distance and 20 mm minimum timber
  • Clip stays in the timber while the screw turns
  • One review describes aligning a timber dry-lining frame

Cons

  • Piece count says 1 while included components says 100
  • Review texts marked Germany describe cam-out and poor hold
  • Setting tool is not in the included line
  • Thread field says UNC

Best for: You have a timber batten at least 20 mm thick, a gap within 60 mm, a TX25 bit and the setting tool.

Less suitable: You need 160 mm, a T30 driver, or a furniture foot, or you expected the setting tool in the box.

Common questions

How many screws does the fischer listing say are in the box?

Included components says 100 adjusting screws FAFS 5.0 x 80 TX25. Number of pieces and number of items both say 1. The box weight is 1.14 kg.

What finish does the listing state?

Zinc plated. The set name is FAFS 5.0 x 80 Zinc Plated Adjustment Screws. Outdoor use is a question in the raw file with no answer.

What do the reviews in the raw file say?

They are marked as reviewed in Germany. One describes aligning a timber dry-lining frame. Others describe drives rounding, heads camming in softwood, and poor hold. The listing line is 3.6 from 16.

How we compared

Five amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the stored pages, the review notes on file and the manufacturer pages named below. There is no laboratory test. Stars are the listing line. The highest total is the top pick, once. The highest value part that is not the top pick is best value, once. SPAX scores 65 and is the top pick. TIANLIN scores 64, with a value part of 10, and is best value. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Job match

40%

A timber adjusting screw whose title names length, drive and a real adjustment method scores highest on this part. A furniture foot that states one metric thread scores lower. A foot that also states a tilt scores a little higher. A stored review that says the wrong length arrived is already deducted.

2

Stars

Adjusting screw buying guide

Separate the job before the price. A timber adjusting screw sets a gap under a batten. A furniture foot only levels a leg. Match length and drive for timber, and match the metric thread for a foot. If the listing disagrees with its own title, measure what arrives. Shelf prices and the conflicts on these five listings stay on this page.

What is an adjusting screw?

An adjusting screw fixes a batten to a wooden substrate and then sets the gap. One pattern uses retaining grooves under a flat head: you drive it home, then turn it anti-clockwise so the grooves lift the batten. SPAX sells that pattern here as 6 x 160 mm. Another pattern, fischer FAFS, uses a clip that stays in the timber while the screw turns. The UK page for FAFS 5 x 80 says a separate setting tool seats the clip flush. That tool is not in the amazon included-components line.

Best for

  • Cladding a wall or ceiling on timber battens, with a flush head and a set gap
  • Levelling a table or light cabinet once you have measured the thread
  • A shorter TX25 batten gap when you already own the setting tool

Not ideal for

  • A rained-on deck, or coastal timber with an unconfirmed coating
  • A structural frame specified to BS EN 14592
  • A replacement window, which a competent-person scheme can certify

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Treating every search hit as one product

A timber adjusting screw sets a gap under a batten. A furniture foot only levels a leg. The fischer JUSS double-thread pattern is a different screw and is not one of these five listings.

  2. 2

Mixing the drive or trusting a junk line

This SPAX pack is T30. This fischer pack is TX25. The bits are not interchangeable. Lines such as #0-80, M80, UNC or untreated fight the titles. Measure what arrives.

  3. 3

Reading 450 kg or the stars as a lab result

Uni-Fine states 450 kg without saying per foot or per set, and there is no test report in the file. SPAX and fischer review texts are marked Germany. Stars are the listing line, not a UK laboratory test.

What to weigh up

Job, length and drive

High

Job comes before price. A timber batten on timber is one product. A rocking piece of furniture is another. A foot is not a cheaper batten screw. For timber, match length to the wood and the gap. SPAX’s flyer row for 6 x 160 mm lists a maximum wood thickness of 40 mm and a maximum distance of 120 mm. fischer’s UK page for FAFS 5 x 80 lists a maximum distance of 60 mm, a 45 mm thread and a minimum timber thickness of 20 mm. A 20 mm batten does not need a 160 mm screw.

Coating, thread and listing conflicts

High

Coating and the thread in a furniture leg are the next checks, and so is whether the listing agrees with itself. SPAX describes WIROX for indoors and for outdoors that is not directly weathered, in Eurocode 5 service class 2. Direct rain needs a fixing the timber supplier accepts. The coating notes put stainless A2 in the weather and A4 on the coast. The SPAX amazon finish field says untreated, which conflicts with WIROX in the title.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Wall or ceiling battens

You are cladding a wall or a ceiling on timber battens and you want a flush head and a set gap. The SPAX 6 x 160 mm box is the top pick if the batten is up to 40 mm, the gap is within 120 mm and you have a T30 driver. Measure what arrives: one review says 6 x 80 mm came, and the finish field says untreated.

Our recommendation

View offer

A shorter TX25 gap

You have a timber batten at least 20 mm thick, a gap within 60 mm, a TX25 bit and the setting tool. The fischer FAFS 5 x 80 is the shorter timber option at about £27.42. The included line says 100 screws and the piece-count field says 1. The review texts are marked Germany.

A light M6 furniture leg

You are levelling a table, a speaker or a light cabinet and the hole measures M6. The TIANLIN pack of four is best value at about £6.99. No load is stated. Some reviews on the same ASIN describe M8 studs, so measure the stud that arrives. It is not a batten screw.

Common questions about adjusting screws

Which adjusting screw is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick in this set is the SPAX 6 x 160 mm box at about £26.95. The title names 100 flat-head T30 screws with retaining grooves, and the score is the highest. amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 from 27 reviews. Those review texts are marked Germany. One review says 6 x 80 mm arrived, and the finish field says untreated while the title says WIROX. Measure what arrives. This is not a laboratory test.
How much do adjusting screws cost on amazon.co.uk?
The stored amazon.co.uk prices are about £6.99, about £7.99 and about £9.99 for four furniture feet, and about £26.95 and about £27.42 for the two timber boxes. The fischer piece-count field says 1 while the included line says 100. One SPAX review says 6 x 80 mm arrived. Feet sit under £10 for four. The timber packs sit around £27 a hundred. Stored shelf prices, not a live re-check.
What should you check before you buy an adjusting screw?
Decide the job. A batten screw needs a length and a drive. A 20 mm batten does not need a 160 mm screw. The SPAX pack is T30 with grooves: the flyer row allows 40 mm of wood and 120 mm of gap. The fischer FAFS pack is TX25, with a 60 mm maximum distance, and the setting tool is separate. A foot needs an M6, M8 or M10 hole. Check conflicts in the listing before you trust the stars.
Is a furniture foot the same as a batten adjusting screw?
No. A furniture foot screws into a leg and changes the height. It does not fix a batten or set a timber gap. In this set the stated threads are M6, M8 and M10. Reviews on the M6 listing also describe M8 studs, so measure the parcel. No load is stated on the M6 or M10 feet. The M8 listing states 450 kg without saying per foot or per set. Do not treat that figure as a test.
Is a chipboard screw an adjusting screw?
No. A chipboard screw pulls one board to another. It does not lift a batten after you have driven it home, and it is not a furniture foot. If the job is particle board and you do not need a set gap, start from chipboard screws. If the job is a batten on timber, stay with length, drive and the adjustment method named on the box.
Can these adjusting screws go on a rained-on deck?
Not from these listings. SPAX describes WIROX for indoors and for outdoors that is not directly weathered, in Eurocode 5 service class 2. The coating notes put stainless A2 in the weather and A4 on the coast. The amazon finish field says untreated, which conflicts with WIROX in the title. The fischer listing says zinc plated. Direct rain needs a fixing the timber supplier accepts. Do not treat either box as the screw for a rained-on deck.
When should you call a professional?
Use the specified fixing, or a registered installer, for a BS EN 14592 structural screw, a loaded floor, masonry without the plug and the edge distances, treated or coastal timber when the coating is unconfirmed, or a replacement window. fischer allows masonry only with a DuoPower or UX 6 x 50 after a 6 mm hole, and that plug is not in the pack. On floors, SPAX still says to wedge after adjustment. A star line is not that specification.

Our verdict

The top pick is the SPAX 6 x 160 mm box at about £26.95. It has the highest score, and the title names 100 pieces, T30 and retaining grooves for a timber batten. The best value is the TIANLIN M6 pack of four at about £6.99, because its value part is the highest and it is not the top pick. A furniture foot does not replace a batten screw. The fischer FAFS 5 x 80 is the shorter TX25 option only when the gap stays within 60 mm and you already have the setting tool. None of these scores is a laboratory test.
