Top pick: FrogTape green 24 mm – Score 84, tied with ScotchBlue, and the higher review count decides it: 4.6 from 29,161 reviews, 24 mm × 55 m at about £4.79, for cured surfaces, with no day count on the listing. Best value: Avotik blue, three rolls – Best value as the lowest shelf price with one stated width: about £6.99, 24 mm crepe, 4.5 from 166 reviews, with the 50 m versus 55 yard clash kept in view. Updated October 2026.

Painter's tape is a paper or film masking tape you use to hold a paint line, then peel away, if the surface and the timing suit that roll. On amazon.co.uk the split that matters is medium-tack tape for cured emulsion, wood, glass and metal; low-tack washi for wallpaper and coatings that are only touch-dry; ordinary crepe in multipacks; and a heavier PE tape for brick and render. A green roll is not a gentler grade than a blue one. Amazon is not badged that way, because the listing prints two widths. The checks, in order, are in the [painter's tape buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/painter-s-tape/sub/painter-s-tape-buying-guide). You tell the rolls apart by tack, backing, and whether a peel lifts sound emulsion.

The best Painter's tapes in detail

FrogTape green 24 mm

Rank 1

FrogTape green 24 mm

Our view

The FrogTape green roll is one 24 mm × 55 m paper tape at £4.79, sold for cured paint, wood, glass and metal, with PaintBlock named on the listing. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 29,161 reviews, and the listing ranks it 1 in Painter's Tape, which is why it is the top pick over the ScotchBlue roll that ties it on the score. Several of the first 50 UK texts praise a clean peel on cured walls. Others say it lifted paint, including a coating about 48 hours old and new plaster without a mist coat. The bullets do not name wallpaper, and they tell you to test a small area and remove the tape soon after painting. This listing prints no clean-removal day count, so the 55 m length is what you can plan from. At this shelf price the roll is about 9p a metre.

Pros

  • 24 mm × 55 m paper roll at £4.79
  • PaintBlock named for cured paint, wood, glass and metal
  • 4.6 from 29,161 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Rank 1 in Painter's Tape on the listing

Cons

  • UK texts include paint lift on a coating about 48 hours old
  • New plaster without a mist coat is a reported failure
  • Wallpaper is not in the bullets
  • No clean-removal day count on the listing

Best for: Cured emulsion, wood, glass or metal, if you peel the tape soon after painting.

Less suitable: Wallpaper, fresh plaster without a mist coat, or paint that is only a day or two old.

Common questions

Does this listing say it is for fresh paint?

No. The bullets say cured paint, wood, glass, and metal. They also say to test a small area and remove the tape soon after painting.

Is wallpaper named?

Only as a question on the listing. The bullets do not say wallpaper.

What do the UK reviews say about paint lift?

Several of the first 50 UK texts praise a clean peel on cured walls. Others say it lifted paint, including a coating about 48 hours old and new plaster without a mist coat.

ScotchBlue 2090, 24 mm

Rank 2

ScotchBlue 2090, 24 mm

Our view

ScotchBlue 2090 is one 24 mm × 41 m blue roll at £4.50, with medium adhesion and clean removal stated for up to 14 days indoors and outdoors. The listing also calls it UV resistant and waterproof, and the bullets describe PEFC paper with a solvent-free adhesive. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 11,563 reviews, the same star line as the FrogTape roll, so the scores tie and the top pick is the roll with more reviews. Many of the first 50 UK texts praise straight lines and an easy peel. More than one says the tape tears along one edge as it leaves the roll, and more than one says it lifted wall paint. The material field says metal while the bullets say paper, so treat the metal row as a listing clash. At 41 m it is shorter than the 55 m FrogTape roll, at about 11p a metre.

Pros

  • Clean removal stated for up to 14 days
  • UV resistant, indoor and outdoor, and waterproof on the listing
  • 4.6 from 11,563 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • 24 mm width for a usual paint edge

Cons

  • Tears along one edge as it leaves the roll, in more than one UK text
  • Paint lift on walls in more than one UK text
  • Material field says metal; bullets say PEFC paper
  • 41 m, shorter than the 55 m FrogTape roll

Best for: Indoor and outdoor edges on cured surfaces when you want a stated 14-day ceiling and will still peel sooner.

Less suitable: A job where the roll must unwind without edge tears, or wallpaper and fresh coatings.

Common questions

How long does the listing say it can stay on?

Clean removal up to 14 days is both a bullet and the clean-removal field. The bullets also say it is UV resistant and for indoor and outdoor use.

Is the backing metal?

The material field says metal. The bullets describe PEFC paper and a solvent-free adhesive. Both are on the listing.

What do UK reviews say about unwinding?

Many of the first 50 UK texts praise straight lines and an easy peel. More than one says the tape tears along one edge as it leaves the roll, and more than one says it lifted wall paint.

Gauder blue, one roll

Rank 3

Gauder blue, one roll

Our view

GAUDER's single blue roll is 24 mm × 50 m at £4.96, and the bullets call it premium washi paper for smooth and lightly textured surfaces. Those bullets also say it is water resistant and can take prolonged light for up to 14 days. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 4,448 reviews, the same star line and the same first 50 UK texts as the three-roll GAUDER listing, so treat that figure as one parent sample. Several of those texts report sharp lines and no bleed with light coats. One says the glue lifted the original paint, and one says to remove the tape before the paint settles. The listing has no separate material field on the one-roll page, unlike the three-roll listing that also prints acrylic and PET. Choose it when you need one 50 m roll and will not treat the 4,448 reviews as a study of this ASIN alone.

Pros

  • 24 mm × 50 m at £4.96
  • Bullets name washi, water resistance, and light for up to 14 days
  • Shared UK texts often report sharp lines with light coats
  • Rank 5 in Painter's Tape on the listing

Cons

  • 4,448 reviews are shared with the three-roll ASIN
  • One shared UK text says the glue lifted the original paint
  • One text says to remove the tape before the paint settles
  • No material field on this listing to confirm washi

Best for: One room of 24 mm tape on smooth or lightly textured surfaces, with light coats and an early peel.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs the backing confirmed on this ASIN alone, or a review sample separate from the three-roll pack.

Common questions

What backing does the listing name?

The bullets say premium washi paper. This listing has no separate material field.

Does it state a time in the light?

The bullets say it is UV resistant and can endure prolonged light for up to 14 days, and that the surface can withstand moisture.

Are the 4,448 reviews only for this one roll?

The star line matches the three-roll Gauder listing, and the first 50 UK texts are the same texts. Treat them as one parent sample.

Gauder blue, three rolls

Rank 4

Gauder blue, three rolls

∼£10

Our view

The three-roll GAUDER pack is titled as three 24 mm × 50 m blue rolls, 150 m in total, at £9.99. The bullets again say premium washi paper, residue-free removal, and light for up to 14 days on smooth and lightly textured surfaces. The material field on this ASIN says acrylic and polyethylene terephthalate, and the number-of-items field says 1 while the title says three rolls. amazon.co.uk shows the same 4.5 from 4,448 reviews as the one-roll listing. Several shared UK texts report sharp lines and no bleed with light coats. One says the glue lifted the original paint, and one says to remove the tape before the paint settles. At £9.99 you pay about twice the one-roll shelf price for three times the stated length, if the carton matches the title rather than the item-count field.

Pros

  • Title: three 24 mm × 50 m rolls, 150 m
  • £9.99 against £4.96 for one roll
  • Shared UK texts often report sharp lines with light coats
  • Water-resistant claim and 14 days of light in the bullets

Cons

  • Material field says acrylic and PET, not washi
  • Number-of-items field says 1
  • Same 4,448-review line as the one-roll ASIN
  • One shared text reports glue lifting the original paint

Best for: A multi-room job if you accept the washi-versus-PET clash and peel before the paint settles.

Less suitable: A buyer who needs one confirmed backing, or reviews that belong only to this pack.

Is the backing washi or plastic?

The bullets say premium washi paper. The material field says acrylic and polyethylene terephthalate.

What do the shared UK reviews say about bleed?

Several texts report sharp lines and no bleed with light coats. One says the glue lifted the original paint. One says to remove the tape before the paint settles.

Amazon Basics, four rolls

Rank 5

Amazon Basics, four rolls

Our view

Amazon Basics lists four blue rolls at £9.44, with easy removal up to 14 days and a 45-degree peel after the paint is dry. The title and size name say 3.6 cm × 55 m, and a bullet says 2.39 cm × 54.86 m. Both widths are printed, which is why this pack is not the best value in the set. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 1,706 reviews. Some of the first 50 UK texts report crisp lines. Others say the tape would not stick, ripped off the roll, bled, lifted paint, or left residue on glass. Some texts describe cream tape rather than blue, so not every review matches this blue four-pack. The backing is not named, and a per-metre price only holds if four rolls of 55 m is what arrives.

Pros

  • Four rolls at £9.44
  • Easy removal up to 14 days, peeled at 45 degrees
  • 4.5 from 1,706 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Some UK texts report crisp lines

Cons

  • Title says 3.6 cm; a bullet says 2.39 cm
  • UK texts include rolls that would not stick, bled, or left residue on glass
  • Some reviews describe cream tape rather than blue
  • Backing is not named

Best for: A multipack only after you have checked which of the two printed widths is in the carton.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs one stated width, or glass where residue has already shown up in UK texts.

Common questions

Which width is on the listing?

The title and size name say 3.6 cm × 55 m. A bullet says 2.39 cm × 54.86 m. Both are printed. They are not combined here.

How does the listing say to remove it?

Press it onto a clean, dry surface. After the paint is dry, remove it at a 45-degree angle. Easy removal up to 14 days is claimed, with UV resistance.

Do the UK reviews agree?

Some of the first 50 UK texts report crisp lines. Others say the tape would not stick, ripped off the roll, bled, lifted paint, or left residue on glass. Some texts describe cream tape rather than blue.

Avotik blue, three rolls

Rank 6

Avotik blue, three rolls

Our view

Avotik's three-roll pack is the best value in this set at £6.99, with crepe paper named and a size line of 24 mm × 50 m. The title also prints 55 yards on each roll and 165 yards in total, while the unit-count field says 50.0 metres, so the length is not a single figure. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 166 reviews. Many of the first 50 UK texts say paint did not seep and the tape peeled cleanly, including against ordinary masking tape. A few say it broke when removed after 24 hours or did not peel perfectly, and one says the core does not fit a UK tape-and-paper gun. The bullets claim clean removal and say the tape will not peel fresh paint, but they give no day count. The model row is MY 302 and the part number is MY 304. If the size name is the length you receive, 150 m at this price is about 5p a metre.

Pros

  • £6.99 for three crepe rolls, the lowest shelf price with one stated width
  • 4.5 from 166 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Many UK texts report no seep and a clean peel versus ordinary masking tape
  • Indoor and outdoor, and water resistant, on the listing

Cons

  • 50 m size name versus 55 yards in the title
  • A few UK texts: broke after 24 hours, or an imperfect peel
  • One text: the core did not fit a UK tape-and-paper gun
  • Model MY 302 and part MY 304 both appear

Best for: Indoor edges on cured paint when you want metres for £6.99 and you will peel within a day.

Less suitable: A masking machine that needs a standard UK core, or a job that needs a stated removal window in days.

Does the listing give a removal window in days?

No. The bullets claim clean removal without residue and say the tape will not peel fresh paint. They do not give a number of days.

What do UK reviews say?

Northern Brothers green 24 mm

Rank 7

Northern Brothers green 24 mm

∼£15

Our view

NORTHERN BROTHERS lists ten green paper rolls of 24 mm × 20 m, 200 m in total, at £14.99, marked for indoor use and not water resistant. A bullet says the tape fits car, wood, glass, cured paint, wallpaper and metal, and no-residue is listed as a feature without a day count. amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 1,907 reviews. A lot of the first 50 UK texts talk about several widths or beige and white tape, so they do not clearly describe this green 24 mm pack. Those texts also mention tears off the roll and paint lift if the tape is pressed hard. Check the rolls in the box against the title, and test a patch before you run the tape along wallpaper. Each roll is only 20 m, so a room with long edges can use more of the pack than the price first suggests.

Pros

  • Ten 24 mm × 20 m paper rolls, 200 m
  • Wallpaper and cured paint both named in a bullet
  • 4.4 from 1,907 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Indoor use stated

Cons

  • Many UK texts describe beige tape or mixed widths
  • Tears off the roll in those texts
  • Paint lift if the tape is pressed hard
  • Not water resistant, and each roll is 20 m

Best for: Indoor lines on cured paint if you check that the rolls in the box are green and 24 mm.

Less suitable: Wallpaper you cannot spare for a test patch, or outdoor work.

Yes. A bullet says the 24 mm green tape fits car, wood, glass, cured paint, wallpaper, and metal. It is marked not water resistant, and the highlight says indoor.

How much tape is in the pack?

Ten rolls of 24 mm × 20 m. The unit count is 200 metres.

Do the UK reviews match this green 24 mm pack?

A lot of the first 50 UK texts talk about several widths or beige and white tape. Use the title for what this ASIN claims. Those texts also mention tears off the roll and paint lift if the tape is pressed hard.

Northern Brothers blue 36 mm

Rank 8

Northern Brothers blue 36 mm

∼£17

Our view

This NORTHERN BROTHERS pack is eight blue crepe rolls at 36 mm × 20 m, 160 m in total, at £16.69. The extra width covers more of a skirting or architrave than a 24 mm edge. The highlight says indoor use, the bullets say non-residual, and they tell you to clean the surface, test before wide use, and peel as soon as possible after painting. A comparison row also says waterproof, beside that indoor highlight. amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 367 reviews. Some UK texts say it masked glass for several days without bleed. Many say it tore off the roll, stuck rolls together, bled, or pulled paint off within a couple of hours. The number-of-items field says 1 while the title says eight rolls, and £16.69 is the highest price among the paper and crepe packs here for rolls that are still only 20 m each.

Pros

  • 36 mm width for skirting and architrave
  • Eight rolls, 160 m on the title
  • Some UK texts: glass masked for several days without bleed
  • Listing says test first and peel soon

Cons

  • Many UK texts: tears, rolls stuck together, bleed, or paint lift within a couple of hours
  • Number-of-items field says 1
  • £16.69 for 20 m rolls
  • Indoor highlight beside a waterproof row

Best for: Wide indoor masking on glass or cured woodwork if a test strip peels clean and the rolls unwind.

Less suitable: A tight budget, wallpaper, or any surface where a two-hour peel already lifted paint.

Tapebear delicate 19 mm

Rank 9

Tapebear delicate 19 mm

∼£11

Our view

TAPEBEAR's delicate pack is five gold washi rolls, 19 mm × 50 m, 250 m in total, at £11.36, sold as low-tack indoor tape. The bullets name wallpaper, glass, plastered walls and wood, and they claim no paint bleed and no sticky residue. You are told to lift it slowly at 45 degrees when the paint is dry to the touch. No day count is given, and the listing says it is not water resistant. amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 154 reviews, and the themes here use the 24 UK-marked texts on the listing. Several of those texts say it left watercolour paper and paint in place. More than one says it pulled paint off, and one calls the tack stronger than a delicate tape. A highlight also says orange while the colour row says gold, and 19 mm is a detail line rather than the usual 24 mm paint edge.

Pros

  • Five 19 mm × 50 m washi rolls, 250 m
  • Wallpaper, glass, plaster and wood named
  • Low-tack wording and a 45-degree peel when dry to the touch
  • Several UK texts left watercolour paper and paint in place

Cons

  • Not water resistant, and no day count
  • More than one UK text says it pulled paint off
  • One UK text calls the tack stronger than a delicate tape
  • Gold on the colour row, orange in a highlight

Best for: Indoor wallpaper, glass or fresh coatings where 19 mm is enough and you peel as soon as the paint is touch-dry.

Less suitable: Exterior work, a 24 mm skirting edge, or a surface where even low tack has already lifted a test patch.

Adhes PE brick tape

Rank 10

Adhes PE brick tape

∼£28

Our view

ADHES sells three orange PE rolls at 50 mm × 55 m, 165 m in total, at £27.99, for stucco, brick, concrete, masonry, wood and exterior siding. The bullets say the UV-resistant backing withstands sunlight, heat, moisture and outdoor conditions for up to 7 days, and that it removes cleanly from most surfaces. That 50 mm width and the PE film are the rough-exterior option in this set, not a 24 mm crepe for an emulsion edge. amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 28 reviews, a thin sample, which pulls the score down to 58. The written reviews saved with the listing are not marked United Kingdom, so they are not treated here as British decorating experience. At about 17p a metre it is the dearest tape in the table. It suits brick and render if you will take it off inside the stated 7 days, and the star line is not a large UK verdict.

Pros

  • 50 mm PE for stucco, brick, concrete and siding
  • Three rolls, 165 m
  • 7-day UV and weather claim on the listing
  • Water resistant on the listing

Cons

  • £27.99, about 17p a metre
  • Only 28 reviews on amazon.co.uk
  • Written reviews are not marked United Kingdom
  • Too wide for a normal indoor paint edge

Best for: Rough exterior masonry where a 50 mm PE tape and a 7-day outdoor ceiling match the job.

Less suitable: Indoor emulsion lines, wallpaper, or anyone treating 28 reviews as a settled UK sample.

Northern Brothers green 25 mm

Rank 11

Northern Brothers green 25 mm

∼£13

Our view

NORTHERN BROTHERS' twelve-roll pack is green paper at 25 mm × 20 m, 240 m in total, at £12.73. The title says indoor and outdoor, while the bullets say avoid direct sunlight, keep the surface clean and dry, lift at 45 degrees, and remove the tape soon after painting. The listing also says it is not water resistant. amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 from 1,038 reviews, the lowest star line in this comparison. Some UK texts say it peeled without lifting paint. Many of the first 50 UK texts say each roll is short, the photo looks fuller, or the tape tears as it leaves the core. You are buying twelve 20 m rolls rather than one long roll, so the outdoor words in the title matter less than the bullet that says keep the tape out of the sun.

Pros

  • Twelve rolls, 240 m on the title, at £12.73
  • 25 mm, close to a usual paint edge
  • 45-degree lift and an instruction to remove the tape soon
  • Some UK texts peeled without lifting paint

Cons

  • 4.3 from 1,038 reviews, the lowest star line here
  • Many UK texts: short rolls, a fuller photo, or tears off the core
  • Not water resistant, and the bullets say avoid direct sun
  • Title says outdoor while the bullets limit sunlight

Best for: Indoor straight edges if you want many 20 m rolls and you peel at 45 degrees the same day.

Less suitable: Sunlit exterior work, or a buyer who expected one long roll from the pack photo.

Common questions

Can the listing be used in the sun?

The title says indoor and outdoor. The bullets say avoid direct sunlight, keep the surface clean and dry, lift at 45 degrees, and remove the tape soon after painting. The water field says not water resistant.

How much tape is that?

Twelve rolls of 25 mm × 20 m. The unit count is 240 metres.

What do UK reviews say about the rolls?

Some say it peeled without lifting paint. Many of the first 50 UK texts say each roll is short, the photo looks fuller, or the tape tears as it leaves the core.

How we compared

Eleven amazon.co.uk listings, with prices, stars and review counts saved on 20 October 2026, were scored from the star line and one review band. The star rating is divided by 5, multiplied by 75, and rounded half to even. One band is then added, and the bands do not stack: 15 at 10,000 reviews, 12 at 1,000, 8 at 150, 4 at 50, and minus 8 below 50. A 4.6 from 29,161 reviews is 84. The same 4.6 from 11,563 reviews is also 84, and the top pick is the roll with more reviews. Best value is the lowest shelf price with one stated width, which is the Avotik pack at about £6.99. Amazon Basics is not that badge, because two widths are printed. The weights below are those two parts scaled so they sum to 100. The printed score stays the unscaled sum. This is not a laboratory test, and a day count on a brand site is not copied onto a roll that does not state it.

1

Star rating

83%

The amazon.co.uk star average divided by 5, then multiplied by 75 and rounded half to even. A 4.6 contributes 69 points before the review band. A 4.3 contributes 64. Stars are not a line-quality test.

2

Review-count band

17%

One band only: 15 at 10,000 reviews, 12 at 1,000, 8 at 150, 4 at 50, and minus 8 below 50. Bands do not stack. A 4.4 from 28 reviews is cut by 8. A tie on the total is broken by the higher review count for the top pick.

Painter's tape buying guide

Buy the tape for the surface and the peel, not for the colour of the roll. Eleven amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the pages saved on 20 October 2026. A star average is not a promise of zero bleed. A day count is a ceiling. The top pick and the best value are named from that score and from the shelf price. Neither result is a laboratory test.

What is painter's tape?

Painter's tape is a paper or film masking tape sold in the UK to hold a paint line and then peel away, if the surface and the timing suit that roll. You tell the rolls in this set apart by tack, backing, and whether a peel lifts sound emulsion. Colour is not a grade. Medium-tack multi-surface tape is for cured emulsion, wood, glass and metal. FrogTape green 24 mm × 55 m, about £4.79, shows 4.6 from 29,161 reviews, names PaintBlock, and tells you to remove the tape soon after painting.

Best for

  • A room of cured emulsion, wood, glass or metal
  • Wallpaper or a touch-dry coating, with a low-tack test patch

Not ideal for

  • New plaster without a mist coat, or day-old emulsion under medium tack
  • A flaking exterior or a sprayed whole house

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Beige crepe on a colour-block

Ordinary crepe is not a clean-edge grade. A colour-block needs a painter's tape whose tack suits cured paint, and a peel while the edge is still manageable. Colour of the roll does not make that choice.

  2. 2

Leaving the tape up for the printed maximum

14 days on ScotchBlue, and 21 or 60 days on FrogTape's own UK pages, are ceilings. The FrogTape listing in this set prints no day count and says to remove the tape soon after painting. A day count is not a target.

  3. 3

Judging a 20 m multipack by the pack price

NORTHERN BROTHERS rolls here are 20 m each, from about £12.73 to about £16.69. A 41–55 m branded roll can be less per metre. Check the metres, not only the price on the pack.

What to weigh up

Surface and tack

High

Cured emulsion, wood, glass and metal suit medium-tack multi-surface tape. Wallpaper, veneer, and paint that is only touch-dry need low tack. Brick and render need a rough-surface or PE tape. tesa's UK notes say the coating must grip the wall more strongly than the tape grips the coating, and that hard pressure on wallpaper raises the tear risk. The same notes say the tape gets brittle below about 5 °C. FrogTape green is sold for cured paint, wood, glass and metal.

Removal, backing and width

High

Remove the tape sooner than the printed ceiling. ScotchBlue 2090 states clean removal for up to 14 days. 3M's UK removal note says peel when the paint is dry to the touch, at about 45 degrees. FrogTape's UK pages say peel while the paint is wet, and score a dried bridge. Do not treat one method as the only method. The steps, with each maker's timing kept separate, are on [how to use painter's tape](/hub/painting-supplies/painter-s-tape/sub/painter-s-tape-how-to-use).

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A room of cured emulsion

You want a visible 24 mm tape that peels off cured paint, wood, glass or metal. FrogTape green 24 mm × 55 m is about £4.79, with 4.6 from 29,161 reviews, and the listing says to peel soon after painting. UK texts include a clean peel on cured walls and paint lift on a coating about 48 hours old.

More metres for less

You are buying metres in a multipack and you accept more risk of a tearing core or tack that lifts paint. Avotik is three crepe rolls at about £6.99, size name 24 mm × 50 m, with 4.5 from 166 reviews. The title also prints 55 yards, and there is no day count.

Wallpaper or a fresh coating

You need low tack, not a medium-tack roll. TAPEBEAR is five gold washi rolls, 19 mm × 50 m, at about £11.36, and the bullets name wallpaper. Peel at 45 degrees when the paint is dry to the touch. More than one UK text says it pulled paint off. For brick and render, the separate option is the ADHES PE tape.

Common questions about Painter's tapes

Which painter's tape is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is FrogTape green 24 mm × 55 m at about £4.79. It scores 84, from 4.6 across 29,161 amazon.co.uk reviews. ScotchBlue 2090 also scores 84, from 4.6 across 11,563 reviews, so the higher review count takes the badge. The listing is for cured paint, wood, glass and metal, and it says to peel soon after painting. It prints no clean-removal day count. UK texts include a clean peel on cured walls, and also paint lift on a coating about 48 hours old.
Which painter's tape is the best value?
The best value is the Avotik three-roll crepe pack at about £6.99. It is the lowest shelf price in this set with one stated width, 24 mm on the size name, and amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 166 reviews. Many UK texts say paint did not seep and the tape peeled cleanly. A few say it broke when removed after 24 hours. The size name says 50 m a roll and the title also says 55 yards, so do not treat the length as one figure.
How much does painter's tape cost on amazon.co.uk?
Prices here are the amazon.co.uk shelf prices saved on 20 October 2026. ScotchBlue is about £4.50 for 41 m and FrogTape about £4.79 for 55 m. Under about £10 you also have Avotik at about £6.99 and Amazon Basics at about £9.44. Mid packs run from the GAUDER three-roll at about £9.99 to NORTHERN BROTHERS at about £12.73 to £16.69. The PE brick tape is about £27.99. A rule of thumb only: FrogTape is about 9p a metre, and Avotik about 5p a metre if 150 m arrives.
How long can you leave painter's tape on the wall?
A day count on a packet is a ceiling, not a target. ScotchBlue 2090 states clean removal for up to 14 days, which matches 3M's UK page for that tape. FrogTape's UK pages state up to 21 days for multi-surface tape, 7 in direct sun, and up to 60 days for a delicate-surface product. The FrogTape roll on this page does not print that day count, and the brand still says to remove tape soon after painting. Do not copy one window onto a roll that does not state it.
Can you use painter's tape on wallpaper?
Only a low-tack tape, and only after a test patch. TAPEBEAR's bullets name wallpaper and say the washi is low adhesion, lifted at 45 degrees when the paint is dry to the touch. It is not water resistant and it gives no day count. Several UK texts say it left paint in place. More than one says it pulled paint off. tesa's UK notes say the coating must grip the wall more strongly than the tape grips the coating, and that hard pressure on wallpaper raises the tear risk.
Is painter's tape the same as masking tape?
Ordinary crepe masking tape and a painter's grade are not the same job. Crepe conforms and tears by hand. A painter's tape in this set is sold with a clean-removal claim, a width for a paint edge, and sometimes a day count. Avotik is crepe paper at about £6.99, and UK texts compare it with ordinary masking tape. Beige crepe on a colour-block is a common way to lift paint. Medium-tack tape on day-old emulsion is another. Colour alone does not tell you which grade you have.
What if the roll will not unwind or the width is wrong?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015, sections 9 and 11, cover satisfactory quality and a match to the description. A roll that will not unwind, or a width that is not the one described, is a seller issue. Amazon Basics prints 3.6 cm in the title and 2.39 cm in a bullet, so check the carton before you mask a room. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 are the Great Britain baseline. From 13 December 2024, Northern Ireland uses EU Regulation 2023/988. No British Standard for household painter's tape was identified.
When should you call a professional, and what paints the edge?
Call a professional for a sprayed whole house, a flaking exterior, or a wallpaper test patch that already lifts. Leaving tape up because the packet said 14 or 21 days, flooding the edge, or putting multi-surface tape on new plaster are mistakes you can avoid. A bad batch is a return, not a call-out. Once the line is masked and the paint is ready, the wall is a roller job, which is a different comparison: painting rollers.

Our verdict

The top pick is FrogTape green 24 mm × 55 m at about £4.79. It scores 84, from 4.6 across 29,161 amazon.co.uk reviews, for cured paint, wood, glass and metal, with PaintBlock named. ScotchBlue 2090 ties that score and has fewer reviews, so it does not take the badge. The listing prints no clean-removal day count, and UK texts include paint lift on a coating about 48 hours old. The best value is the Avotik three-roll crepe pack at about £6.99, the lowest shelf price with one stated width, at 4.5 from 166 reviews. The size name and the title disagree on length, and a few UK texts say it broke after 24 hours. None of these scores is a laboratory test.
