Painter's tape vs masking tape: line or dust sheet

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to cut in a skirting, and the only tape in the drawer is beige crepe. Painter's tape vs masking tape is a job question. Crepe is enough when it holds a dust sheet on a surface you will not judge. A line you will look at needs painter's tape that states that job, because beige paper lets emulsion creep. Prices sit in the [painter's tape comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/painter-s-tape). Peter F. wrote this from UK brand pages and amazon.co.uk listings saved on 20 October 2026. Same shape, different job

Both tapes in a typical UK drawer are crepe paper with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, torn by hand and sold in similar widths. tesa's UK table treats fine crepe as one family and low-adhesion or washi tape as another, and tesa says masking tapes are not covered by one British Standard. Q1 Tapes puts the difference on the work: painter's tape is built to limit bleed and to come off clean, while ordinary masking tape holds film where you will not judge the surface afterwards. A 24 mm strip along a skirting is a line you will see. A loop holding polythene over a doorway is only a holding job.

Where ordinary masking tape is the right tool

Beige crepe is the right tool when the tape only keeps something in place and the surface under it will be covered, wiped, or never inspected. Q1 says masking tape tends to leave residue if it stays up for the whole job. Take it off the same day. On a Saturday cut-in, crepe under the dust sheet is enough for the floor. The same roll along the skirting fails once the second colour goes on.

Where crepe lets paint through or lifts a wall

Beige crepe on a colour-block lets emulsion creep under the strip, so a white ceiling against a grey wall shows a feathered band instead of a stop. Painter's tape reduces the creep compared with leftover crepe. It does not cancel a flooded edge. ScotchBlue's 14 days and FrogTape's ceiling of 21 days belong only to the rolls that state them. The peel sequence sits on how to use painter's tape.

How to read this comparison

A painter's title on amazon.co.uk still needs a stated job before the roll is a paint-line tape. The green FrogTape roll and ScotchBlue 2090 both state a painting job on cured paint, wood, glass, or metal. Avotik's three-pack is crepe, and a 14-day window does not transfer onto it. The best value in the wider set is that Avotik pack, the lowest shelf price with one stated width, which adds metres and still leaves a colour-block without a clean edge. Which roll to open is best masking tape for painting. The order of those decisions is the painter's tape buying guide.

Common questions

Are painter's tape and masking tape the same product?
They are the same shape of product and, on most DIY rolls, the same crepe paper. They are not the same job. Painter's tape is sold to hold a paint line and come off clean. Ordinary masking tape holds film or a sheet where you will not judge the surface. tesa says these tapes do not sit under one British Standard, so the line on the packet matters more than the colour. A blue multipack can still be crepe with a painter's title on the front.
When is beige crepe enough?
Beige crepe is enough for a dust sheet, a polythene cover, or a label you will throw away, if you take it off the same day. It is the wrong tape for a skirting, a ceiling line, or any edge you will look at once the paint has dried. Q1 notes that masking tape tends to leave residue when it stays up for the job. On varnished wood or emulsion that is only touch-dry, press a short test strip before you run the whole length.
Will masking tape bleed on a two-colour wall?
It often will. Crepe along the join between two colours lets emulsion creep under the edge, so the line feathers instead of stopping. Which? says a quality tape can still seep, and a paint shield is the alternative they name when the edge has to stay hard. A painter's tape that states a line job reduces that creep compared with beige crepe. It does not stop a flooded edge, or a strip left up past the window printed on that roll.
Which tape is stickier, painter's tape or masking tape?
UK guides disagree, and this page does not invent a number to settle it. Homebuilding treats painter's tape as often less sticky than masking tape, and more able to stay up. RS Components says traditional masking tape is usually less sticky than specialist painter's tape. Buy for the job. A line you will see needs painter's tape that states clean removal. A dust sheet needs tape that holds and comes off the same day, which is where beige crepe still fits.
Is every blue roll painter's tape?
No. Colour is not a grade. Avotik's blue three-pack in this set is crepe, about 150 m of 24 mm tape at £6.99, and the listing prints no day count. NORTHERN BROTHERS packs are crepe or paper sold under a painter's title. FrogTape and ScotchBlue state a painting job. A blue roll without that statement behaves more like the beige crepe already in the drawer.
What should I buy if I only have crepe?
If the line will be seen, keep the crepe for the dust sheet and mask the edge with a roll that states a painting job. In this set the top pick for a cured line is the green FrogTape 24 mm × 55 m roll at £4.79, taken off soon after painting. The best value, the Avotik three-pack at £6.99, is still crepe, so it adds metres and does not repair a colour-block. Skip both on wallpaper or on paint only a day or two old.
