Best painter's tape UK: tack before width or metres

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are stood in front of blue, green, and beige rolls, masking a skirting or a ceiling line, and the pack price is the only figure that looks easy to compare. The best painter's tape UK for that job is the roll whose tack matches the surface, in a width you can see, with enough metres for the lines you will run. Shelf prices on the [painter's tape comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/painter-s-tape) are amazon.co.uk figures saved on 20 October 2026. Peter F. compared those listings and public UK maker notes, without a lab test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the tack to the surface

The surface decides the tack. Cured emulsion, wood, glass, and metal suit a medium-tack multi-surface tape. Wallpaper, veneer, and paint that is only touch-dry need low tack, and brick or render needs a rough-surface PE tape. tesa's UK notes say the coating has to grip the wall more strongly than the tape grips the coating. Test a patch, because no listing here promises a lift-free peel on every wall. Wallpaper and fresh coatings are on painter's tape for wallpaper. Beige crepe against a painter's grade is on painter's tape vs masking tape.

Pick a width and a length

A 19 mm roll is a detail line, 24–25 mm is the domestic default in UK width guides, and 36–38 mm covers more architrave. The 50 mm roll in this set is the exterior PE film. 24 mm is enough on a straight skirting if you press the edge down and keep a wet brush off the tape face. Use 36 mm on a deep or bowed skirting, where a narrow strip leaves the brush on bare trim.

What this set actually offers

The figure to compare is the price per metre. Saved on amazon.co.uk on 20 October 2026, FrogTape at £4.79 for 55 m is about 9p a metre and ScotchBlue at £4.50 for 41 m is about 11p a metre. Avotik's three × 24 mm × 50 m crepe pack at £6.99 is about 5p a metre if 150 m arrives, with no removal window stated. ADHES, three × 50 mm × 55 m of PE film at £27.99, is about 17p a metre for brick and render.

Questions before you order

A day count is a ceiling, and you peel sooner. The two GAUDER files share one review count of 4,448. A roll that will not unwind, or that is the wrong width, goes back under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The top pick and the best value, and who should skip each, are on the best painter's tape page.

Common questions

Do I need delicate tape or multi-surface?
Multi-surface tape suits cured emulsion, wood, glass, and metal. Delicate or low-tack tape suits wallpaper, veneer, and paint that is only just past touch-dry. In this set, green FrogTape and ScotchBlue 2090 are the multi-surface rolls, and TAPEBEAR's washi is the low-tack pack. FrogTape's UK FAQ sends fresh paint at least 24 hours old to delicate tape. This green listing does not print that window.
Is 24 mm enough for skirtings?
24 mm is enough for a straight skirting on a flat wall, and UK width guides treat 24–25 mm as the domestic default. A deep or bowed skirting is where 36 mm covers more of the trim. FrogTape and ScotchBlue in this set are 24 mm, and TAPEBEAR is 19 mm, a detail line. FrogTape's 36 mm and 48 mm sizes sit in the range catalogue, separate from this 24 mm × 55 m listing.
How many metres do I need for one room?
Metre counts change with the room. Weekendcalc's calculator gives 38 m for a 4 × 3 m room along the skirting, the ceiling line, a door, and a window. Multiply your line length by 1.10, divide by the roll length, and round up. On that example the allowance is about 42 m, so one 55 m roll covers it and one 41 m roll is close.
Why is a ten-pack of 20 m rolls not automatically cheaper?
The cheaper buy is the lower price per metre. Ten rolls of 20 m are 200 m only when every roll is that long. At FrogTape's rate of about 9p a metre, 200 m is about £18, so a ten-pack near that price matches the long roll and still leaves short ends when you round up. NORTHERN BROTHERS 20 m rolls cost from £12.73 to £16.69. Divide that carton by the metres on the title.
Can the green FrogTape in this set go on yesterday's emulsion?
The green 24 mm × 55 m FrogTape roll is for cured paint, wood, glass, and metal. Yesterday's emulsion is too young for that medium tack, and day-old emulsion is a known way for this sort of tape to lift a coating. The listing says to test a small area and to remove the tape soon after painting, and it prints no day count. FrogTape's UK FAQ points delicate tape at fresh paint that is at least 24 hours old.
What if the listing prints two widths?
Amazon Basics prints 3.6 cm × 55 m in the size name and 2.39 cm × 54.86 m in a bullet, at £9.44 for four rolls. That is about 36 mm beside about 24 mm, so the skirting width is unresolved. About 4p a metre holds only if four lengths of 55 m arrive. A roll at the wrong width has missed the description, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the route back to the seller.
Is brick tape a substitute for wall tape?
ADHES is three × 50 mm × 55 m of PE film at £27.99, about 17p a metre, sold for rough surfaces such as brick and render. A colour line on emulsion still wants a 24 mm paper tape in the tack that matches the coating. The written reviews on that file are not marked United Kingdom. Keep the PE roll for masonry.
