The best rose of Jericho plants, compared.
Top pick: HOSTENATURA Best value: HOSTENATURA – Highest value part on a different listing, at about £5.85, with the species in the description, a 10 cm item length and 4.6 from 16 reviews. Updated 21 October 2026.
This rose of Jericho comparison keeps ten amazon.co.uk listings and names two. Rose of Jericho is a shop name for two unrelated plants: the spikemoss lepidophylla, which the RHS calls resurrection clubmoss, and the annual hierochuntica, which the RHS calls holy rose. If you want a plant that can turn green, you need that name, a count and a size that agree, and a wet-then-dry routine. Royal Society work shows dead outer stems can still move, so unfurling does not prove the ball is alive. Water and a dry-down are in the [how to revive a rose of Jericho](/hub/houseplants/rose-of-jericho/sub/rose-of-jericho-how-to-revive). Kew records S. lepidophylla from southern and western through. Sold dry, it can open and, if inner tissue is alive, turn green. Sold as it is a dried skeleton, not the green clubmoss in care note.

Question 1 of 2
What do you want it to do?
HOSTENATURA is the best value in this set. It is one plant at about £5.85, with Selaginella lepidophylla named in the description and an item length of 10 cm. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.6 from 16. The score is 72, and the value part is 9. The UK review says it started opening in water. The sunlight lines conflict, so do not treat one of them as the only instruction. The review file is small. Skip it if you want a multi-pack or a gift box.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want one cheap plant with the species named, and you can read the conflicting light lines before you place it.
Less suitable: You want several plants, a gift box, or a large review file.
Specifications
Common questions
Can you store it without water?
The dormant bullet says keep it dry and cool, with no water and no direct sunlight.
What light does the listing give?
Three lines disagree. Care instructions say direct sunlight. Dormant storage says no direct sun. Once it is activated, the bullet says indirect light.
What did buyers write?
The amazon.co.uk line is 4.6 from 16. The UK review says it started opening as soon as it was put in water. The other five texts are short and are from France or Spain. They do not repeat a complaint.
EquSym’s 7-pack states seven dried plants at 2.5–3.5 in, at about £19.51, with 4.2 from 535 amazon.co.uk reviews. The score is 72. It is not the top pick, because the technical fields do not name Selaginella or Anastatica. Review texts often say the dry ball opens in a dish of water, and several say the bag held more than seven. The same texts often mention mould, a plant that stays brown, or broken leaves. A display case is not in the included components. Skip it if you need a printed species name.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want several dried plants to try in water, and you can accept that some may stay brown or mould.
Less suitable: You want a pot, a display case, or Anastatica hierochuntica named on the listing.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this pack include a display case?
No. Included components name dried rose of Jericho only. A display case is a question on the listing, not a listed item.
How many plants are stated?
The title, the pack count and the item count all say 7. The stated size is 2.5–3.5 in. Several review texts say the bag held more than 7.
What do the reviews repeat?
The amazon.co.uk line is 4.2 from 535. In the first 50 texts, opening in water is often praised. Mould, staying brown and broken leaves come up often. One of those texts is marked United Kingdom.
The EquSym 4-pack costs the same £19.51 as the 7-pack and shows 4.2 from 498 reviews. The title names Selaginella and the sunlight field says full shade. The score is 72. There is no centimetre size. Review texts often say the plants open in water, and also that sizes vary and that some stay brown or grow mould. Skip it if you want a stated diameter or a lower price per plant.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want a 4-pack whose title names Selaginella and whose listing says full shade.
Less suitable: You want a stated inch size, or more plants for the same £19.51.

What light is on the listing?

What do the reviews repeat?

YAKEBA is the top pick in this set. The listing names Selaginella lepidophylla, caps the diameter at 7 cm, and includes a gift box, at about £21.74 with 4.2 from 117 amazon.co.uk reviews. Shade is the sunlight field. The score is 73 from stars, sample size, fit and value. It is not a lab result. The bullets say it turns green in water and that you can repeat that. Review texts also describe tips that stay brown, mould, and plants that do not open. Those texts are from Germany and France, not the United Kingdom. Skip it if you want the lowest price or more than one plant.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want one named Selaginella in a gift box, with a stated 7 cm cap.
Less suitable: You want the lowest price, or a pack of several plants.
Specifications
Common questions
Does it need soil?
The listing asks and does not answer. The bullets describe water, a jar and a mini terrarium. They do not say to pot it in compost.
What arrives in the box?
One small plant, diameter up to 7 cm, in a gift box. The product line is 7 x 7 x 7 cm and 50 g. The manufacturer field is Hawlik GmbH.
What do the reviews repeat?
The amazon.co.uk line is 4.2 from 117. The 22 texts are from Germany or France. Opening and the gift box are praised. Incomplete greening, mould, and a plant that will not open are the complaints.

Skip it if you need a stated size or a species name.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want a mid-price 4-pack in a bag and can accept a count-field conflict.
Less suitable: You want a stated diameter, a gift box, or four plants that reviews call large.
Specifications

The HERBALISTA 8-pack is about £17.72 with 4.0 from 70 reviews. The title says eight plants at 2.5–3.5 in and a bag, not a pot. The unit-count field says 1.0. The score is 60. Review texts often say the balls are nearer 1–2 in, arrive dusty or crushed, and can grow mould in water. They also say the ones that do open turn green. Skip it if the stated inch size is the reason you are buying.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want a larger stated count at about £18 and you will check the real size on arrival.
Less suitable: You need plants that match 2.5–3.5 in, or a pot in the box.
Specifications

VITALIA 50 g is a dried flower sold as Chajarat Mariam at about £12.58. There is no amazon.co.uk review line. The score is 12. The listing claims traditional fertility use and says one flower can open and close if you dry it. It does not name a species, a size or a tea method. Included components say nothing. Skip it if you want stars, a plant count or care steps. A fertility line on the page is seller text, not a result.
Pros
Cons
Best for: You want a 50 g dried flower sold as Chajarat Mariam and you do not need reviews.
Less suitable: You want a stated plant count, a species name, or a review file.

Scores use the ten amazon.co.uk listings kept on this page. Shelf prices, stars and review counts are the lines in those files, captured on 20 October 2026. There is no lab test. The score is 0–100 from four parts, and the weights sum to 100. Stars are the nearest whole number of (amazon rating / 5) × 40. A missing rating line scores 0. The highest total is the top pick. The highest value part on a different listing is best value.
Stars
40%Stars are scaled out of 5 and capped at 40. HOSTENATURA is 4.6, which scores 37. YAKEBA and both EquSym packs and the Herbalista 4-pack are 4.2, which scores 34. The Herbalista 8-pack is 4.0, which scores 32. Brxmpn is 2.5 from 2, which scores 20. VITALIA and Générique have no customer-reviews line, so this part is 0.
Review sample
25%The sample band is capped at 25. 200 or more reviews score 20, 50–199 score 12, 10–49 score 6, 1–9 score 2, and no review line scores 0. EquSym’s 535 and 498 reviews score 20. YAKEBA’s 117, and the Herbalista files of 65 and 70, score 12. HOSTENATURA’s 16 reviews score 6. Brxmpn’s 2 reviews score 2. A large file is not treated as a UK-only sample.
Fit as a rehydratable plant
25%Fit is capped at 25 and follows the buying order: a printed species name, then a count and a size that agree, then what is in the box. YAKEBA scores 23 because Selaginella lepidophylla, a 7 cm cap, a gift box and shade are printed. HOSTENATURA scores 20. The EquSym 4-pack scores 12. The Herbalista 4-pack scores 11. The EquSym 7-pack scores 10. The Herbalista 8-pack scores 9. Each VITALIA listing scores 8. Générique scores 7. Brxmpn scores 6. A large review file does not outrank a missing binomial.
Value in this set
10%Value is capped at 10 and is judged inside this set, not as a cheapest-on-the-internet claim. HOSTENATURA at £5.85 with 4.6 from 16 scores 9, the highest value part, and it is not the top pick. The EquSym 7-pack scores 8. The Herbalista 8-pack scores 7. The EquSym 4-pack scores 6. The Herbalista 4-pack scores 5. YAKEBA at £21.74 for one plant, and both VITALIA listings, score 4. Brxmpn scores 3. Générique at £29.99 with no reviews scores 2.
Read the species name before the shop name. A dried ball that can turn green, and a dried annual skeleton, are not the same purchase, and a green photograph is not proof the parcel will match it.
Rose of Jericho is a shop name, not one species. On amazon.co.uk it covers the spikemoss Selaginella lepidophylla, which the RHS calls resurrection clubmoss, and the mustard-family annual Anastatica hierochuntica, which the RHS calls holy rose. Kew records S. lepidophylla from southern New Mexico and western Texas through Central America. Sold dry, it can open and, if inner tissue is alive, turn green. A. hierochuntica is a desert annual.
Rose of Jericho on these pages is either Selaginella lepidophylla or Anastatica hierochuntica. A shop name, a fern label or Rosa de Jerico does not say which. A green photograph is not the dry ball that arrives.
Constant water is how these parcels go mouldy. The Guardian’s note for the spikemoss asks for a complete dry-down every few days. Opening in water does not prove the plant is alive.
EquSym’s 535 reviews are an amazon.co.uk aggregate. Most written texts in these files are not from the United Kingdom. A unit-count field that contradicts the title is a description problem under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a detail to ignore.
The first check is a printed binomial. Selaginella lepidophylla is the spikemoss the RHS calls resurrection clubmoss. Kew records it from southern New Mexico and western Texas through Central America. Sold dry, it can open and, if inner tissue is alive, turn green. Anastatica hierochuntica is a different plant, a mustard-family annual the RHS calls holy rose. Sold as Chajarat Mariam it is a dried skeleton. Rosa de Jerico, resurrection plant and fern do not separate the two.
The second check is a count and a size that agree, then what is in the box, then a care line that includes drying. YAKEBA states one plant, a diameter up to 7 cm and a gift box. HOSTENATURA states one plant and a 10 cm item length, with no pot named. The EquSym 7-pack states seven plants at 2.5–3.5 in, and the count fields agree. The EquSym 4-pack states four plants, names no centimetre size, and costs the same £19.51.
Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.
You want one plant that can turn green in a dish, and you will dry it out. The YAKEBA gift box is the top pick: Selaginella lepidophylla is printed, the diameter is capped at 7 cm, and the box is included, at about £21.74. Skip it if you want the lowest price or more than one plant.
You want several dried plants and you will check the count on arrival. The EquSym 7-pack states seven plants at 2.5–3.5 in, at about £19.51, with 4.2 from 535 reviews. The species is not named. Review texts often mention mould, a plant that stays brown, or broken leaves.
You want Anastatica hierochuntica named, as a dried object, and you do not expect the green clubmoss. Générique is the only listing here whose product-type field prints that binomial. It is about £29.99, with no review line, and the title says 10 pieces while the unit-count field says 8.
The top pick is the YAKEBA gift box at about £21.74. It scores 73, the highest here, because the listing names Selaginella lepidophylla, caps the diameter at 7 cm and includes a gift box, with 4.2 from 117 amazon.co.uk reviews. Review texts also describe incomplete greening and mould, and those texts are from Germany and France. Best value is HOSTENATURA at about £5.85, a different listing, with the highest value part in this set. The species is in the description, the item length is 10 cm, and the line is 4.6 from 16. The sunlight lines on that page conflict. Skip YAKEBA if you want several plants. Skip HOSTENATURA if you want a gift box or a large review file. Skip Brxmpn when the only review is the UK mould note. Skip VITALIA if the attraction is a fertility line.
HOSTENATURA
Highest value part on a different listing, at about £5.85, with the species in the description, a 10 cm item length and 4.6 from 16 reviews.
