The best aloe vera plants, compared.

Top pick: Carbeth Plants (gift wrapped) Best value: Aloe vera (35 cm, 10.5 cm pot) – Highest value score on a different ASIN: about £12.49, the lowest price here with at least 200 reviews, at 4.2 from 451. Updated 21.10.2026.

A live aloe vera is a succulent for a bright UK windowsill. It is not a frost-hardy garden plant, and it is not a medicine. The Royal Horticultural Society rates Aloe vera, which means outside in summer only and indoors through a British winter, in free-draining peat-free compost. A photo of a ceramic pot is not the contents unless the title says the pot is included. If you want a different tough houseplant, start with the [snake plant comparison](/hub/houseplants/snake-plant). Shade and a humid bathroom are poor fits. Compost should be a peat-free cactus mix, or peat-free compost with grit. Water when the compost is dry, and water very sparingly in winter. A liquid feed monthly from May to August is the outdoor pattern. The indoor sheet says April to September, and there is no feed in winter. Mushy leaves after constant watering are the failure that comes from watering too often.

The best aloe vera plants in detail

Carbeth Plants (gift wrapped)

Rank 1

Carbeth Plants (gift wrapped)

∼£19

Our view

Carbeth's gift listing is about £18.99, the highest price in this set, for one indoor plant in a hessian bag with a bow. The star line is 4.8 from 29 reviews. The UK reviews in the file mostly say the plant was healthy, well packed and a good present, and several say it was bigger than expected. The expected-height field is 12 cm, so the size in the box is not the same kind of claim as the 25–30 cm Carbeth titles. One review mentions slight tip damage from packaging. A personalised message depends on sending a note after the order. The score is 65 because the sample is small. Choose it for the wrap. Skip it if you want the large review file on the £14.99 Carbeth plant.

Pros

  • Hessian bag and bow stated
  • 4.8 from 29 reviews
  • Reviews mostly praise packing and health
  • Carbeth named as the brand

Cons

  • about £18.99 is the top price here
  • Only 29 reviews
  • Height field is 12 cm
  • Pot type is not stated

Best for: You want a Carbeth aloe that arrives as a present, and you accept a 12 cm height field plus a small review sample.

Less suitable: You want a stated 25–30 cm plant with the 1,271 review line.

Common questions

Is it gift wrapped?

Yes. The bullets describe a hessian bag tied with a bow. A personalised message needs a note after ordering.

How tall is the height field?

The expected plant height unit is 12 cm. Several reviews say the plant was bigger than expected.

How many reviews are on the listing line?

4.8 out of 5 from 29 reviews. The notes are mostly praise, with one mention of tip damage.

Carbeth Plants (11 cm pot)

Rank 2

Carbeth Plants (11 cm pot)

∼£15

Our view

Carbeth's 11 cm listing is the top pick in this set because the title states one plant, an 11 cm nursery pot and a 25–30 cm height, at about £14.99, with 4.2 from 1,271 amazon.co.uk reviews. That review line is the same pool as the other Carbeth 25–30 cm page, so it is not two separate samples. Reviews often call the plant healthy and a good size, and they often say the white pot in the photo is not in the box. Compost spills and bent tips show up often enough to plan a repot, not to treat the listing as free of damage. The score is 82 from stars, sample size, fit and value. It is not a lab result. Skip it if you need the ceramic pot in the picture or a gift bag.

Pros

  • Stated 11 cm nursery pot and 25–30 cm height
  • 4.2 from 1,271 reviews
  • Reviews often describe a healthy plant
  • about £14.99

Cons

  • Decorative pot not included
  • Spilled or dry compost in reviews
  • Bent leaf tips from tight boxes
  • Review pool shared with B08KRPSNTR

Best for: You want one windowsill aloe with a stated pot size and the largest review file in this set, and you already know the ceramic pot is not included.

Less suitable: You want the pot in the photograph, or a wrapped gift.

Common questions

Is the decorative pot included?

No. The listing says the plant is supplied in an 11 cm nursery pot and that the decorative pot in the images is not included.

How tall is this plant stated to be?

The bullets say 25–30 cm, delivered in an 11 cm nursery pot.

What do the reviews repeat about delivery?

Healthy leaves are often praised. Repeated complaints are a missing ceramic pot, spilled or dry compost, and leaf tips bent by a tight box.

Carbeth Plants (25–30 cm)

Rank 3

Carbeth Plants (25–30 cm)

∼£15

Our view

This Carbeth listing is the same shelf price as the 11 cm pot, about £14.99, and it carries the same 4.2 from 1,271 review line and the same opening review texts. The bullet gives one plant around 25–30 cm including the pot and says the decorative pot is not included. It does not name an 11 cm nursery pot, and the care field is only Water. Use it as a sibling of the 11 cm listing, not as a second independent 1,271-review plant. The score is 79. Prefer the 11 cm title when you want the pot diameter in writing. Skip this listing if you thought the two Carbeth pages were different plants with different review histories.

Pros

  • 25–30 cm including the pot stated
  • Same 4.2 from 1,271 line as the 11 cm listing
  • Decorative pot exclusion is in the bullet
  • about £14.99

Cons

  • Pot diameter not stated
  • Care field is only Water
  • Review texts match the 11 cm listing
  • Decorative pot not included

Best for: You want a single Carbeth plant around 25–30 cm and you have already read that the review file matches the 11 cm listing.

Less suitable: You want a separate review sample, a named pot diameter, or the ceramic pot in the photo.

Common questions

Is the decorative pot included?

No. The bullet says the decorative pot is not included, unlike the picture.

Is the 1,271 review count separate from the 11 cm Carbeth listing?

No. This page uses the same 4.2 from 1,271 line and the same opening review texts as the 11 cm listing.

What height is stated?

One plant around 25–30 cm including the pot. The pot diameter is not stated.

Aloe vera (35 cm, 10.5 cm pot)

Rank 4

Aloe vera (35 cm, 10.5 cm pot)

∼£12

Our view

This is the best value listing in the set on the rule used here: the lowest shelf price with at least 200 reviews, about £12.49, at 4.2 from 451. The title is the specification: 35 cm in a 10.5 cm pot. There is no brand in the brand field, and there are no care bullets beyond three unanswered questions. Reviews often say the plant arrived healthy and was good value. They also report a shorter plant than 35 cm, snapped leaves, and compost so dry it was in the box. One review says it died within a month after a broken leaf. The score is 79, level with the thinner Carbeth sibling on points and ahead of it on an independent review file. Skip it if you need a named nursery brand or a gift wrap.

Pros

  • about £12.49
  • 4.2 from 451 reviews, separate from the Carbeth pool
  • Title states 35 cm and a 10.5 cm pot
  • Item weight 450 g

Cons

  • No brand in the brand field
  • Height complaints, including about 23 cm
  • Snapped leaves and dry compost
  • No care bullets

Best for: You want the lowest price in this set that still has hundreds of reviews, and you can accept a nursery pot and a height that some buyers say is under 35 cm.

Less suitable: You want Carbeth named on the listing, a decorative pot, or a gift bag.

Common questions

How tall does the title say the plant is?

The title says 35 cm tall in a 10.5 cm pot. One review says the plant was about 23 cm with small leaves.

Which brand is named?

The brand field is empty. One review names the seller as BGC Plants. That is a review sentence, not a brand field.

Does the listing say it is safe for pets?

The listing does not answer that. The Horticultural Trades Association lists Aloe as Category C, harmful if eaten by humans, dogs, cats and rabbits.

Online Garden Centre (2 plants)

Rank 5

Online Garden Centre (2 plants)

∼£14

Our view

The Online Garden Centre listing is two plants at about £13.95, with pots not included and a delivery window written as 1 July to 30 December. The star line is 4.2 from 379. Reviews often call the plants healthy and good value for two, and they also say the pots are very small, the compost arrives loose and dry, and you should repot on day one. One review says the plants died within a month. The 65 cm figure is an expected-height field, not a promise of the size in the parcel. The score is 77. Choose it when you already own pots and want two plants. Skip it if you need a plant in January, February or spring before July, or if you wanted one established plant in a named pot.

Pros

  • Two plants at about £13.95
  • 4.2 from 379 reviews
  • Several reviews say they grew on after repotting
  • Full sun stated on the listing

Cons

  • Pots not included
  • Delivery window 1 July to 30 December
  • Small pots and dry compost in reviews
  • 65 cm is a catalogue field, not a measured supply height

Best for: You want two plants, you have pots, and you are ordering inside the stated delivery window.

Less suitable: You need a single plant in a stated pot, or a delivery outside 1 July to 30 December.

Carbeth Plants (6 × 5.5 cm)

Rank 6

Carbeth Plants (6 × 5.5 cm)

∼£17

Our view

Carbeth's six-pack is about £16.99 for six plants in 5.5 cm nursery pots, with no stated plant height. The star line is 4.2 from 63 reviews, a smaller file than the single Carbeth plants. Reviews describe neat, healthy little plants and also a smashed pot, soil lost in the box, and sets that were duplicates rather than six different plants. One review says one of six was dying. Another says the plants were dry and most died within two weeks. The score is 65. Choose it when you want several small pots for a shelf and you will repot. Skip it if you wanted one 30 cm plant or six distinct varieties.

Pros

  • Six plants in named 5.5 cm pots
  • Carbeth named as the brand
  • 4.2 from 63 reviews
  • Several reviews describe healthy small plants

Cons

  • No stated plant height
  • Smashed pot and spilled soil in reviews
  • Duplicates rather than six different plants
  • Dry arrival and deaths in some reviews

Best for: You want several small Carbeth aloes for a windowsill and you will repot them.

Less suitable: You want one large plant, or six plants that the listing proves are different varieties.

Common questions

How many plants are in the set?

Six, each in a 5.5 cm nursery pot. Plant height is not stated.

Does the listing say they are all different?

The title says mix. Reviews say the set arrived as repeats, including two lots of three the same.

Does it say the plants suit low light?

The sunlight field is partial shade. The bullets say a bright spot. Shade is a poor fit for Aloe vera.

Prestige Plant (about 30–40 cm)

Rank 7

Prestige Plant (about 30–40 cm)

∼£12

Our view

Prestige Plant's listing, with Generic in the brand field, is about £12.49 for a plant titled at about 30–40 cm in a plastic growing pot. The star line is 3.4 from 29 reviews, the weakest in this set. A few reviews call it healthy and well packed. Several say stems arrived broken, the plant was small, it was turning black, or it died within a week. One review says there was no pot, which conflicts with the bullet. The seller text also claims healing gel and air purification. Those are seller sentences, not results in this comparison. The score is 45. The other about £12.49 listing has 451 reviews at 4.2. Skip this one unless you accept a thin, mixed review file.

Pros

  • about £12.49
  • Height claim about 30–40 cm
  • Bullet says a plastic growing pot is supplied
  • A few reviews describe a healthy plant

Cons

  • 3.4 from 29 reviews
  • Broken stems and deaths in several reviews
  • Brand field is Generic
  • One review says no pot

Best for: You have already read the short UK review file and still want this seller's 30–40 cm claim at about £12.49.

Less suitable: You want a review file larger than 29, or the other about £12.49 listing with 451 reviews.

How we compared

Scores use the seven amazon.co.uk listings kept in this comparison, the shelf prices and star lines on those pages, and the review notes for the same ASINs. This is not a laboratory test, and it is not an RHS award. Weights sum to 100. Stars are worth 40, the review sample 25, fit for a live windowsill aloe 25, and value in this set 10. Two Carbeth ASINs share one 4.2 from 1,271 line, so that sample is not counted twice. The highest total is the top pick. The highest value part on a different ASIN is best value.

1

Star rating

40%

Amazon stars are scaled out of 5 and capped at 40. Every listing here except Prestige Plant is 4.2, which is 34 points. The gift listing is 4.8, which is 38. Prestige Plant is 3.4, which is 27. A star average is not a health inspection.

2

Review sample

25%

The sample band is capped at 25. 1,000 or more reviews score 25, 200 or more score 20, 50 or more score 12, and 10 or more score 6. The Carbeth 11 cm page and its sibling both print 4.2 from 1,271, and the opening review texts match, so the points are not added together. The 35 cm listing has 451 reviews of its own.

3

Fit for a windowsill aloe

25%

Fit is capped at 25. A single plant with a stated height around 25–30 cm, a named nursery pot, and complaints that are mostly packaging scores higher than a thin title, a six-pack with smashed pots, or a 30–40 cm claim with several broken or dead arrivals. A decorative pot in the photograph does not count unless the listing includes it.

4

Value in this set

10%

Value is capped at 10, and it is not a prize for the cheapest title alone. The 35 cm listing is the lowest price with at least 200 reviews, at about £12.49, so it takes the value points. The other about £12.49 listing has 3.4 from 29 reviews. Best value is that 35 cm ASIN, which is not the top pick.

Aloe vera plant buying guide

Check the height, the pot and the plant count before the photograph. A live aloe is a bright-windowsill succulent, not a medicine and not a frost-hardy garden plant.

What is an aloe vera plant?

A live Aloe vera is a succulent houseplant for a bright windowsill in the UK. It is not a frost-hardy garden plant, and it is not a medicine cabinet. The Royal Horticultural Society rates it H1C: you can stand it outside in summer, and it comes indoors for a British winter. It wants full sun, south- or west-facing. Shade and a humid bathroom are poor fits. Compost should be a peat-free cactus mix, or peat-free compost with grit. Water when the compost is dry, and water very sparingly in winter.

Best for

  • A bright kitchen windowsill where you water only when the compost is dry
  • A wrapped present if you accept a smaller height field and fewer reviews

Not ideal for

  • A home where a cat, dog or rabbit chews leaves
  • A shady, humid bathroom, or a frost-hardy outdoor bed

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Trusting the photograph for the pot

Several listings show a decorative pot and then say it is not included. Read the title and the bullets. A missing ceramic pot is not a fault if the listing already excludes it.

  2. 2

    Watering every week in winter

Water when the compost is dry, and hardly at all in winter. A humid bathroom and misting are poor fits. Mushy leaves after constant watering are the usual failure. A reddish colour can mean thirst.

  3. 3

Adding the two Carbeth review counts

The 11 cm page and the 25–30 cm Carbeth page share one 4.2 from 1,271 line and the same opening review texts. That is one sample. A 4.8 from 29 is not a stronger file than 4.2 from several hundred.

What to weigh up

Stated size, pot and plant count

High

You are comparing listings, not plants measured for this page. Check the height in centimetres and the pot diameter in the title or the bullets. A photograph of a ceramic pot is the contents only when the listing says the pot is included. In this set the Carbeth 11 cm page names an 11 cm nursery pot and 25–30 cm. The sibling at the same price says 25–30 cm including the pot and does not name the diameter.

Light, winter water and pets

High

The RHS wants full sun on a south- or west-facing windowsill. Shade and humid air are poor fits, which is why a bathroom is a weak home for this plant. Water when the compost is dry. In winter, water hardly at all. Feed monthly in the growing months and not in winter. A reddish colour can mean the plant is thirsty. Constant watering that leaves mushy leaves is the other common failure. Misting does not replace that dry-compost habit. Pets and children change the decision before the price does.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

One plant for a bright kitchen

You want one windowsill aloe, you will water only when the compost is dry, and you already know the ceramic pot in the photo is not included. The Carbeth 11 cm listing is the top pick: a stated 11 cm nursery pot, 25–30 cm, about £14.99, and 4.2 from 1,271 reviews.

A wrapped present

You want a Carbeth aloe that arrives as a present, and you accept a 12 cm height field plus a small review sample. The gift listing is about £18.99, with a hessian bag and bow stated, and 4.8 from 29 reviews. A personalised message needs a note after ordering.

Lowest price with a large review file

You want the lowest shelf price in this set that still has hundreds of reviews, and you can accept a nursery pot and a height some buyers say is under 35 cm. The 35 cm listing is best value at about £12.49, rated 4.2 from 451 reviews. The brand field is empty.

Common questions about aloe vera plants

Which aloe vera plant is the top pick?
The top pick is the Carbeth 11 cm nursery pot at about £14.99, rated 4.2 from 1,271 amazon.co.uk reviews, with a stated height of 25–30 cm. It scores 82, the highest here. Reviews often call the plant healthy and also say the ceramic pot in the photo is not included. Best value is a different listing, the 35 cm plant at about £12.49 with 4.2 from 451 reviews. Do not add the shared Carbeth review counts together.
How much does an aloe vera plant cost?
On these seven amazon.co.uk listings the shelf price runs from £12.49 to £18.99. Entry is about £12.49 for one plant. Mid is the two-plant listing at £13.95, the Carbeth singles at £14.99, and six small Carbeth plants at £16.99. The gift wrap is £18.99. These are the prices on this set, not a UK market average, and they can move. A 4.2 from several hundred reviews carries more weight than a 4.8 from 29.
Is the decorative pot included?
Only if the listing says so. The Carbeth 11 cm and 25–30 cm pages both say the decorative pot is not included. The 35 cm title names a 10.5 cm pot. The two-plant listing says pots are not included. Prestige Plant's bullets say a plastic growing pot, and one review says there was no pot. The gift listing does not state the pot type. A ceramic pot in the photograph is not proof it is in the box.
How often should you water an aloe vera?
Water when the compost is dry, and hardly at all in winter. The Royal Horticultural Society wants free-draining peat-free compost, no frost, and no humid bathroom. A reddish colour can mean thirst. Mushy leaves after constant watering are the other failure. A week-by-week indoor routine is in how often to water an aloe vera. This comparison did not run a watering trial on these seven plants.
Is an aloe vera plant safe for cats and dogs?
Do not treat it as safe for cats, dogs or rabbits. The Horticultural Trades Association lists Aloe as Category C, harmful if eaten by humans, dogs, cats and rabbits. The RHS also says wear gloves when handling. Sharp leaf edges and bitter latex are part of the plant. If a pet is very unwell after chewing a leaf, call a vet. Animal PoisonLine is 01202 509000, and charges apply. That label is about the plant, not one ASIN.
Can you use the leaf on a burn?
No. The NHS says cool a burn under running water for 20 minutes, then cover it with cling film, and do not use creams, oils or butter. A Cochrane review, CD008762, found no high-quality evidence for aloe on acute and chronic wounds. Seller lines about healing gel are not NHS advice and are not a result from these listings. For a large, deep, facial, chemical or electrical burn, use NHS 999 or 111.
Why do two Carbeth listings show 1,271 reviews?
The 11 cm pot and the 25–30 cm Carbeth page print the same 4.2 from 1,271 line and the same opening review texts. Treat that as one shared sample, not two independent panels, and do not add the counts. The 11 cm title names the pot diameter. The sibling does not. The 35 cm listing, at 4.2 from 451, is a separate review file. A 4.8 from 29 on the gift wrap is a smaller sample again.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Carbeth 11 cm nursery pot at about £14.99. It scores 82, the highest here, with a stated height of 25–30 cm and 4.2 from 1,271 reviews. Reviews often call the plant healthy, and they often say the white pot in the photo is not in the box. Best value is a different ASIN, the 35 cm listing at about £12.49, which has the highest value score in this set and 4.2 from 451 reviews of its own. Skip the Carbeth 11 cm plant if you need the ceramic pot in the picture. Skip the 35 cm listing if you need a named nursery brand. Do not add the two Carbeth 1,271 counts into one larger sample.
