Artificial turf rolls comparison 2026

The best artificial turf, compared.

Top pick: GardenKraft 15 mm, 4 m x 1 m Best value: WADOODI 30 mm, 1 m x 4 m – About £7.75 a square metre on a clear 4 square metres, with the yarn conflict left visible. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

Pieces run from a 15 mm strip and a two-pad pack up to about 35 mm and 10 square metre rolls. Judge a listing by the stated pile, any published stitch rate, and whether the backing is described as permeable. Flame-retardant, lead-free and UV lines have no certificate in these files, so they are not test results. The [artificial turf buying guide](/hub/flooring/artificial-turf/sub/artificial-turf-buying-guide) sets the decision order. Artificial turf here is a synthetic grass piece or roll for a garden, patio, balcony or dog corner. It is not living grass, and it is not a sports pitch. BS EN 15330-1:2013 covers outdoor hockey, football, rugby training, tennis and multi-sport surfaces. A bullet that mentions sport is not compliance with that standard. A 15 by 15 cm dollhouse mat was left out of this set as a misfit. Garden and patio pieces are rectangles and rolls, and most of them are 1 m wide.

Pieces run from a 15 mm strip and a two-pad pack up to about 35 mm and 10 square metre rolls. Judge a listing by the stated pile, any published stitch rate, and whether the backing is described as permeable.

The best artificial turf in detail

GardenKraft 15 mm, 4 m x 1 m

Rank 1

GardenKraft 15 mm, 4 m x 1 m

∼£25

Our view

GardenKraft’s 4 m by 1 m roll is a 15 mm pile at £24.99, about £6.25 a square metre, and it carries 4.5 from 1,912 reviews, the highest star rating in this set. Reviewers say it looks more like grass once it is down, including a brown undertone, and that it is easy to cut for a visiting-dog strip, a catio or a terrace. Two boxes can sit close enough beside an existing lawn, though other buyers received two boxes that did not match, and one found the green lighter than the advert. The pile is short: a few people worried it would be too thin, and one still found 15 mm adequate as a strip rather than a deep lawn. Drainage holes appear in a review, not in the bullets, and the listing does not name a yarn polymer. The UV-defence line has no certificate in the file.

Pros

  • 4 square metres at £24.99, about £6.25 a square metre
  • 4.5 from 1,912 reviews, the largest count in this set
  • Easy to cut for a dog strip, a catio or a terrace
  • A brown undertone that some buyers found realistic

Cons

  • 15 mm pile, so it reads as a short strip rather than a deep lawn
  • Two boxes can be different shades
  • The yarn polymer is not named

Best for: A light-use strip on paving, soil or a terrace where a short pile is enough.

Less suitable: A lawn you want to feel like 30 mm or 35 mm grass.

Common questions

Can you use it on a balcony?

The listing includes balconies and roof terraces. No fixing method is given.

Does it need maintenance?

The listing says low maintenance. The pile is 15 mm, so it is a short strip rather than a deep lawn.

Is it for pets?

The title says dogs and other pets. Reviews include a terrace dog strip and a catio.

WADOODI 30 mm, 1 m x 4 m

Rank 2

WADOODI 30 mm, 1 m x 4 m

∼£31

Our view

WADOODI’s selected 1 m by 4 m piece is listed at £30.99, about £7.75 a square metre, with the variant stated as 30 mm and a rating of 4.4 from 108 reviews. Reviewers have used that area as a pond-to-fence border, a front path and a puppy toilet, and several say the pile looks better after a brush. The bullets describe UV-resistant polyethylene and polypropylene on a rubber backing with drainage holes, while the feedback material field says polyvinyl chloride, so the yarn line disagrees with itself. One dog owner thought the backing looked sprayed on and the holes sparse, and other buyers felt the pile was shorter than the listing once it was unrolled. The title also mentions 20 mm beside 30 mm, so the height to trust is the selected 30 mm variant, checked against the parcel. There is no sand-infill line, and the flame-retardant bullet has no certificate in the saved listing.

Pros

  • 4 square metres at £30.99, about £7.75 a square metre
  • 4.4 from 108 reviews, including a path and a puppy toilet
  • Reviewers say it looks better after you brush the pile

Cons

  • Bullets say polyethylene and polypropylene; the feedback field says PVC
  • The pile can feel shorter than the 30 mm claim once unrolled
  • One dog user found the drainage holes sparse
  • The title also mentions 20 mm

Best for: A 4 square metre strip or path where the lower price per square metre is the point and you can accept the yarn conflict.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants a published stitch rate, or a flat that only needs a small potty pad.

Ark Mat Cotford 35 mm, 1 m x 2 m

Rank 3

Ark Mat Cotford 35 mm, 1 m x 2 m

∼£22

Our view

The Ark Mat Cotford piece covers 1 m by 2 m at a stated 35 mm pile, £21.95 on amazon.co.uk, which is about £10.98 a square metre. The listing publishes 14,700 stitches per square metre, a 6,500 dtex yarn and a water-permeable backing at 1,915 g/m2 including the backing, and it says no sand infill is required. Across the shared 4.2 from 1,648 reviews, buyers often describe a dense pile and a thick backing that looks less like a plastic mat on a terrace, and a larger roll in that same review text drained when it was hosed. Several people found it easy to cut so the joins were hard to see, including on a balcony. The same reviews include pieces that look sparse, shed loose blades, and need time laid flat before the pile stands up. Delivery was slower than some buyers expected. That 1,648 figure is shared with the 1 m Cotford listing, so it is not a second independent sample.

Pros

  • 35 mm pile with 14,700 stitches per square metre published on the listing
  • Water-permeable backing, and no sand infill required according to the specification
  • Reviewers cut it for terraces and balconies; a larger piece drained under a hose
  • £21.95 for 2 square metres

Cons

  • Some pieces look sparse and shed loose blades
  • The pile can need time laid flat before it matches the photos
  • The 1,648 reviews are shared with the 1 m Cotford listing

Best for: A small terrace or balcony where you want a stated 35 mm specification rather than the cheapest roll.

Less suitable: A 4 to 10 square metre run where the price per square metre matters more, or a flat that only needs a potty pad.

Ark Mat Cotford 35 mm, 1 m x 1 m

Rank 4

Ark Mat Cotford 35 mm, 1 m x 1 m

∼£15

Our view

This is the same Cotford 35 mm specification as the 1 m by 2 m piece: 14,700 stitches per square metre, a 6,500 dtex yarn, a water-permeable backing at 1,915 g/m2 including the backing, and no sand infill required. You pay £14.95 for 1 square metre, about £14.95 a square metre, which is more per square metre than the 2 square metre piece at £21.95. The saved listing shows the same 4.2 from 1,648 and overlapping review text, so the praise for a dense backing and the complaints about shedding belong to that shared pool. It covers one square metre, which suits a small balcony patch and not a path. UV defence is claimed without a certificate in the file. If you need two metres, the larger Cotford piece is the cheaper way to buy the same grass.

Pros

  • Same published 35 mm Cotford specification as the 2 square metre piece
  • No sand infill required, according to the listing
  • £14.95 if you only need 1 square metre

Cons

  • About £14.95 a square metre, dearer per square metre than the 1 m by 2 m piece
  • The 1,648 reviews are the shared Cotford figure, not a separate sample
  • Shedding and sparse pieces appear in that shared review text

Best for: A one-square-metre balcony or indoor pet patch where the Cotford specification is what you want.

Less suitable: Any run longer than a metre, where the 2 square metre Cotford piece costs less per square metre.

LITA 20 mm, 1 m x 2 m

Rank 5

LITA 20 mm, 1 m x 2 m

∼£25

Our view

LITA’s 1 m by 2 m piece is a stated 20 mm pile at £24.99, about £12.50 a square metre, rated 4.1 from 355 reviews. The listing describes polypropylene fibres, a polyethylene surface and a plastic backing with drainage holes, and reviewers have used it as a small dog toilet and on a balcony. Several say it looks like a laid lawn once it is down and that it cuts like a thick carpet. A later order of the same listing arrived a different colour and a poorer quality, and other buyers called the pile thin, with fibres that fall apart a little. One reviewer could not wash a dog-urine smell out of it. The listing claims fire-resistant material, and the saved listing has no test report. A feedback field says indoor while the bullets say indoor and outdoor.

Pros

  • Stated 20 mm pile over 2 square metres, used on balconies
  • Reviewers found it easy to cut
  • Used as a small dog toilet in reviews
  • 4.1 from 355 reviews

Cons

  • A repeat order can differ in colour and quality
  • Dog urine smell remained after washing for one reviewer
  • Some rolls were shorter or thinner than the buyer expected

Best for: A 2 square metre balcony or a small dog corner, if you accept that smell is not guaranteed to wash out.

Less suitable: A second roll that has to match the first, or a toilet area where smell is the main problem.

The listing says you do not cut the grass. It does not say the mat is maintenance-free.

Petgrow 20 mm, 1 m x 2 m

Rank 6

Petgrow 20 mm, 1 m x 2 m

∼£30

Our view

Petgrow’s 20 mm ECO mat is 1 m by 2 m at £29.99, about £15 a square metre, with 4.1 from 115 reviews. The listing describes UV-resistant yarns, polythene fabric and a latex backing with a self-draining claim, and it is sold for balconies, patios and pet toilets. Reviewers have trimmed it for a small balcony and used it for pups, and one called it cheaper than garden matting on concrete. It is less convincing as a lawn: reviewers say it does not look like real grass, that corners rolled up in the wind during puppy training, and that it frayed and felt too thin for a catio shelf. The title says indoor and outdoor, while the feedback attribute says indoor. A lead-free line has no certificate in the saved listing. There is no sand-infill statement.

Pros

  • Sold as a pet mat and used by pups in reviews
  • Easy to trim for a small balcony
  • Self-draining claim on a latex backing

Cons

  • About £15 a square metre, at the dear end of this set
  • Corners roll up in the wind unless you weigh them down
  • Fraying and a thin pile against a garden-lawn expectation

Best for: A small balcony pet patch you can weigh down so the corners stay put.

Less suitable: A garden that should look like living grass, or a windy balcony you cannot weight or fix.

tonchean 30 mm, 1 m x 10 m

Rank 7

tonchean 30 mm, 1 m x 10 m

∼£79

Our view

tonchean’s 1 m by 10 m roll is £78.89, about £7.89 a square metre, with the listing stating about 30 mm while a feedback field says 4 cm. It is rated 4.1 from 56 reviews. The listing says PE yarn, a thickened back with drainage holes, and that you can hose it. One buyer ordered a second roll after a year because the first still looked acceptable, and another laid about 3 square metres on decking and found a short pile fair for the price. Two reviewers report blades coming out and bald patches within months, and others call it obviously artificial, very bright and not heavy duty. The flame-retardant wording has no certificate in the file. At 13.1 kg it is a long garden roll, not a balcony offcut.

Pros

  • 10 square metres at £78.89, about £7.89 a square metre
  • One buyer reordered after a year
  • Easy to cut, and laid on decking in reviews

Cons

  • Bald patches and blade loss within months for two reviewers
  • Some buyers find it bright and obviously artificial
  • The listing says about 30 mm and a feedback field says 4 cm

Best for: A 10 square metre run where a short, lower-priced pile is acceptable and a worn patch can be replaced.

Less suitable: A premium lawn look, or a balcony that only needs 1 or 2 square metres.

Petgrow 35 mm, 1 m x 3 m

Rank 8

Petgrow 35 mm, 1 m x 3 m

∼£40

Our view

Petgrow’s 35 mm mat covers 1 m by 3 m at £39.99, about £13.33 a square metre, and it is rated 4.1 from 33 reviews. The listing describes polyethylene fabrics, a latex backing and drainage holes, and it names gardens, patios, balconies and a pet toilet. Some reviewers call the pile thick, soft and a good colour, and people have used it for puppy toilet training and, in one case, a grave. Several other reviews call it thin or poor quality, smaller than expected, with a strong plastic smell and fibres coming off. A black edge is hard to hide and needs an overlap. With only 33 reviews, the split between thick and thin is the story, not a settled thickness. The flame-retardant line has no certificate in the file.

Pros

  • Stated 35 mm pile over 3 square metres
  • Some reviewers found the pile thick and used it for puppy training
  • Drainage holes are claimed on the listing

Cons

  • Only 33 reviews, and several call the pile thin
  • Plastic smell and shedding on arrival for some buyers
  • The black edge needs an overlap if you want to hide it

Best for: A 3 square metre patio or pet strip if you can judge the pile before you depend on it.

Less suitable: A join where the edge has to disappear, or an order you cannot check because the review sample is small.

MYOYAY 10 m x 1 m

Rank 9

MYOYAY 10 m x 1 m

∼£80

Our view

MYOYAY’s 10 m by 1 m roll is £79.99, about £8 a square metre, rated 4.0 from 80 reviews, and the bullets do not state a pile height. Reviewers who expected 30 mm said the pile was shorter and rougher, with the black backing showing through. The listing says polypropylene and polyethylene, drainage holes, and that you can leave a flattened roll in the sun for about two hours and then brush it. Some buyers found it easy to put down and fair for the price, with only slightly frayed cut edges, and one said a cat liked it. Two rolls bought together were different greens. The flame-retardant line has no certificate. You are buying 10 square metres of an unspecified pile, which is the risk beside tonchean’s stated height at a similar price per square metre.

Pros

  • 10 square metres at £79.99, about £8 a square metre
  • Easy to cut, with drainage holes claimed
  • The listing tells you to sun and brush a flattened pile

Cons

  • Pile height is not stated in the bullets
  • Reviewers reported a short pile and a visible backing
  • Two rolls can be different shades of green

Best for: A long, lower-priced run if you accept that the millimetres were never stated.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a stated 30 mm or 35 mm pile before they order.

Pet potty grass pads, pack of 2

Rank 10

Pet potty grass pads, pack of 2

∼£19

Our view

This pack is two potty pads at £18.99, each about 46 by 58.5 cm, with the technical details also saying 46 by 58 cm. The listing states a pile of 1.37 inches and a pack weight of 670 g, and the rating is 4.0 from 67 reviews. Urine is meant to pass through the holes rather than soak in, and reviewers in flats used the pads to toilet-train a dog, including one who rinsed them with no detergent and reported fewer accidents than with an ordinary pad. It is not a garden roll. The pile is sparse, some very small dogs found it spiky, and some dogs refused it outright. A puppy chewed through a pad quickly, which that reviewer treated as a swallowing risk. The listing says you can join the two pads for a larger dog, and that still does not make a lawn.

Pros

  • Two pads for a flat at £18.99
  • Urine is meant to drain through rather than soak in
  • Reviewers used it to cut accidents where there is no garden
  • One reviewer rinsed the pads with no detergent

Cons

  • Some dogs refuse the pad or chew through it
  • Too sparse and spiky for some very small dogs
  • Each pad is about 46 by 58 cm, so it is not a lawn piece

Best for: Toilet training on a tray in a flat, where you can rinse the pad and watch a puppy that chews.

Less suitable: A garden lawn, or a dog that has already refused a grass pad.

Turosur 30 mm

Rank 11

Turosur 30 mm

∼£63

Our view

Turosur is £62.99 and rated 3.8 from 33 reviews, the lowest stars in this set. The title says 2 m by 3 m and a 30 mm pile, while a bullet says 1 m by 10 m, so the area is not settled and a price per square metre would be a guess. The parcel weight is 9.22 kg, but the technical-details table in the same saved listing shows a different ASIN, B0DPQGX4NY. Some patio reviews say it looks acceptable with pots and holds its colour, and one later delivery arrived rolled rather than creased. Others received it folded, with creases still there after a week, frayed edges, a black edge that would not join, and a finish one buyer compared with tinsel. UV-stabilised and flame-retardant lines have no certificate. Until the size text agrees with itself, the coverage is the problem, not the colour.

Pros

  • Some patio buyers found it easy to lay beside pots
  • Drainage holes are claimed
  • One delivery arrived rolled, without creases

Cons

  • The title says 2 m by 3 m and a bullet says 1 m by 10 m
  • Creases from folded packing lasted a week for one buyer
  • 3.8 from 33 reviews, with fraying and a weak feel reported
  • The details table in the saved listing shows a different ASIN

Best for: Only a patio patch after you have measured the piece, because the listing does not settle the area.

Less suitable: Any order where the square metres have to be right before you pay.

How we compared

Eleven amazon.co.uk listings were scored for this page. Shelf prices, star ratings and review counts are the figures in the product files. This is not a laboratory test. Flame, lead and UV lines without a certificate do not add points. The four weights below sum to 100.

1

Amazon stars and review count

About 35 percent. A large count matters only inside one job. GardenKraft’s 4.5 from 1,912 reviews is a 15 mm strip, so those stars do not outrank a stated 35 mm specification.

About 25 percent. A stated pile, a clear area and a published stitch rate score higher. A title that disagrees with a bullet, or a pile that is never stated, is a deduction.

Artificial turf buying guide

Measure the area first, then read the pile from the bullet. A star rating only helps inside one job, and a flame or UV line without a certificate is not a test result.

What is artificial turf?

Artificial turf here is a synthetic grass piece or roll for a garden, patio, balcony or dog corner. It is not living grass, and it is not a sports pitch. BS EN 15330-1:2013 covers outdoor hockey, football, rugby training, tennis and multi-sport surfaces. A bullet that mentions sport is not compliance with that standard. A 15 by 15 cm dollhouse mat was left out of this set as a misfit. Garden and patio pieces are rectangles and rolls, and most of them are 1 m wide.

Best for

  • A balcony or terrace where you want a stated pile
  • A dog corner, either a tray pad or a short garden piece
  • A 4 to 10 square metre run where the area on the listing is clear

Not ideal for

  • A sports pitch, which sits outside this set
  • A listed building or conservation area you have not checked locally
  • An order where the listing disagrees with itself on size

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying on the word premium

Premium on a bullet is not a stitch rate. Cotford is the piece that publishes 14,700 stitches per square metre. The other listings do not, even when the wording sounds denser.

  2. 2

    Assuming two boxes match

Reviews on GardenKraft, LITA and MYOYAY describe a later box or a second roll in a different green. If the join has to disappear, order pieces you can compare before you cut.

  3. 3

Trusting holes over a wet base

Drainage holes pass water to whatever is underneath. Clay, sand and chalk do not behave the same way. Call a landscaper if the ground holds water, the fall runs toward the house, or the area needs joins and a compacted base.

What to weigh up

Job, pile and backing

High

Start with the job and the area, measured in metres. A potty pad of about 46 by 58 cm is not a lawn roll. Most garden pieces here are 1 m wide. Pile height is taken from the bullet: 15 mm, about 20 mm, 30 mm and 35 mm. If the title and a bullet disagree, or the bullet never states a height, treat the millimetres as unsettled. Turosur’s title says 2 m by 3 m and a bullet says 1 m by 10 m, so a price per square metre would be a guess. Density counts only when the listing publishes it.

Price per square metre and reviews

High

Price per square metre is the shelf price divided by the stated area, and only where the area is clear. Label it as arithmetic. In this folder that is about £6 to £9 per square metre for GardenKraft at about £24.99 for 4 square metres, WADOODI at about £30.99 for 4 square metres, and tonchean at about £78.89 for 10 square metres. Cotford, LITA and the Petgrow pieces sit at about £11 to £15 per square metre. The two potty pads are about £18.99 and are not priced per square metre.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A small terrace or balcony

You want about 2 square metres and a pile the listing actually states. The Ark Mat Cotford 1 m by 2 m publishes 35 mm, 14,700 stitches per square metre and no sand infill. You pay about £21.95. The same 4.2 from 1,648 reviews is shared with the 1 m piece.

A 4 square metre path

The lower price per square metre is the point, and you can accept a yarn line that disagrees with itself. WADOODI’s 1 m by 4 m piece is about £30.99, about £7.75 a square metre, at 4.4 from 108 reviews. Check the 30 mm variant against the parcel, because the title also mentions 20 mm.

A potty tray in a flat

You do not need a lawn roll. The pack of two pads is about £18.99, each about 46 by 58 cm, and urine is meant to pass through. Reviews include dogs that refused the pad or chewed it. That is a tray job, not a garden.

Common questions about artificial turf

Which artificial turf is the top pick for 2026?
The top pick is the Ark Mat Cotford piece, 1 m by 2 m, at about £21.95. The listing states a 35 mm pile, 14,700 stitches per square metre and a water-permeable backing, and it says no sand infill is required. Amazon shows 4.2 from 1,648 reviews. GardenKraft’s 4.5 from 1,912 reviews is a 15 mm strip, a different job. The 1,648 reviews are shared with the 1 m Cotford listing.
How much does artificial turf cost on amazon.co.uk?
Where the area is clear, this set is about £6 to £9 a square metre for GardenKraft, WADOODI and tonchean, and about £11 to £15 a square metre for Cotford, LITA and Petgrow. Shelf prices run from about £14.95 for 1 square metre of Cotford to about £79.99 for a 10 m roll. The two pads are about £18.99 and are not priced per square metre. Turosur at about £62.99 is excluded because the size lines disagree.
What should you check before you buy artificial turf?
Measure in metres, then read the pile from the bullet. Use a stitch rate only when the listing publishes one. Cotford states 14,700 stitches per square metre. Check whether the backing is described as permeable, and do not treat silence on sand as a promise that none is needed. Divide the shelf price by the stated area only when that area is clear. Flame, lead and UV lines here have no certificate.
Do you need planning permission to replace a lawn?
The Planning Portal says that in most cases you need neither planning permission nor building control to replace a lawn with artificial grass, and that a conservation area or a listed building should be checked locally. That wording is the English portal. It is not a promise for every UK nation and every street. Ask the local authority if the building is listed or in a conservation area, and ask the landlord before you fix anything to a rented balcony.
Does artificial turf need sand infill?
Only the Ark Mat Cotford listings in this set say that no sand infill is required. The other pieces do not state an infill line. That silence is not the same as “none needed”. Drainage holes pass water to whatever is underneath. The HTA and APL domestic note says garden installations have no British Standard equivalent to paving, and that clay, sand and chalk behave differently. Do not expect holes to drain a base that already holds water.
Can you lay these pieces on a balcony?
Several listings name a balcony, and reviews describe cuts for Cotford, LITA and Petgrow. No weight limit is given. Reviews also describe corners lifting in the wind, so you may need to weigh a balcony piece down. Ask the landlord before you fix anything to a rented balcony. A 10 m roll is a garden length, not a balcony offcut.
Is a lawn carpet the same product as artificial turf?
No. Artificial turf in this table is a grass-style pile, from a 15 mm strip to a stated 35 mm piece, plus a two-pad potty pack. A lawn carpet is a separate flooring comparison for a flatter outdoor covering. If you want that shorter surface rather than a grass pile, use the lawn carpet comparison. Pile height, stitch rate and sand infill are the turf questions. They are not the same checklist as a carpet roll.
Can you use this artificial turf for dogs?
Dog use splits into two jobs. The pack of two pads, about £18.99 and about 46 by 58 cm, is a washable tray mat. Urine is meant to pass through. Reviews include dogs that refused a pad or chewed it. A garden piece such as LITA or WADOODI is a larger toilet strip. One LITA reviewer could not wash a urine smell out.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Ark Mat Cotford 1 m by 2 m. It publishes a 35 mm pile, 14,700 stitches per square metre and a water-permeable backing, and the listing says no sand infill is required. It is about £21.95, about £10.98 a square metre, at 4.2 from 1,648 reviews shared with the 1 m piece. The best value is WADOODI 1 m by 4 m at about £30.99, about £7.75 a square metre, at 4.4 from 108 reviews. The yarn lines disagree, and that conflict stays visible. GardenKraft has the highest stars, 4.5 from 1,912 reviews, on a 15 mm strip. None of this is a laboratory test.
