Wood lathe chuck comparison 2026

The best wood lathe chucks, compared.

Top pick: Sknrlko 500821566 Best value: DEEFIINE k120401A1 – Lowest price among the 4 inch sets that include 1×8 and a 3/4×16 adapter, at about £75.98 and 4.4 from 85 reviews. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

A wood lathe chuck screws onto the headstock spindle and grips a bowl blank, a spindle foot, or a pen blank. In a UK hobby workshop it is usually the second purchase after the lathe. The thread has to match, the jaws have to be woodturning jaws, and the lathe has to carry the weight. If you are still choosing the machine, start with the [wood lathe comparison](/hub/workshop/wood-lathe). A twelfth listing in that batch is missing, so nothing here invents that model. A 4 inch scroll is the general bowl chuck . A two-jaw pen chuck and a 35 mm drill chuck are different tools, and they are listed so that difference is visible before you order. × 3.5 mm is the modern UK hobby default.

The best wood lathe chucks in detail

Sknrlko 500821566

Rank 1

Sknrlko 500821566

∼£44

Our view

The Sknrlko 500821566 is a two-jaw chuck at £44.47 for square pen blanks, on a 1 inch × 8 TPI direct thread, with two levers and no adapter listed. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 9 reviews, a high star line on a thin sample. The bullets give a clamp from 8 × 8 mm to 23 × 23 mm and a 2.5 inch body, and the listing weight is 627 g. Four UK reviews describe drilling the centre of pen blanks, including blanks that are not square. One says the gearing is a little stiff when the chuck is new. The V-slot is for square stock, not a bowl tenon. Choose it for pen blanks on a measured 1×8 spindle, and skip it if the job is a bowl or the spindle is another thread.

Pros

  • Made for square pen blanks from 8 mm to 23 mm
  • 1 inch × 8 TPI direct thread
  • UK reviews describe centre-drilling pen blanks
  • 627 g, light on a small spindle

Cons

  • Only 9 reviews
  • Gearing a little stiff when new
  • Not a bowl chuck
  • No adapter for 3/4×16 or M33

Best for: Drilling pen blanks that are not perfectly square, on a 1x8 spindle.

Less suitable: Bowls. The clamp range in the bullets is 8 x 8 mm to 23 x 23 mm.

Is there an adapter?

The title says 1 inch x 8 TPI direct thread. No adapter is listed.

What do the UK reviews use it for?

Four UK reviews. They describe drilling the centre of pen blanks, including blanks that are not square. One says the gearing is a little stiff.

SIIIXS CK0401A1

Rank 2

SIIIXS CK0401A1

∼£83

Our view

The SIIIXS CK0401A1 is a 4 inch scroll at £83.01 that mounts on 1 inch × 8 TPI, with an adapter in the box for 3/4 inch × 16 TPI, one round jaw set and a 3/8 inch wood screw. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 157 reviews. UK reviewers say it fitted a Draper 60988 and a Clarke 20 inch when the supplied adapter was the right one. The listing weight is 2.32 kg, and one UK review said it wobbled on a small Parkside because the chuck was too big for that lathe. The bullets claim it will not rust, which is a listing line rather than a corrosion test, and overtightening marked the timber in a UK note. You get one jaw set, so a second profile means another purchase. It is the top pick in this set when you have already checked 1×8 or 3/4×16, and the wrong buy for a very small benchtop lathe.

Pros

  • Adapter from 1×8 to 3/4×16 in the box
  • UK reviews name a Draper 60988 and a Clarke 20 inch
  • 3/8 inch wood screw for the first hold
  • 4.6 from 157 reviews on amazon.co.uk

Cons

  • One round jaw set only
  • One UK review: too big, and it wobbled, on a small Parkside
  • Overtightening marked the timber

Best for: A Draper or Clarke with 1x8 or 3/4x16, if you want one jaw set and a screw.

Less suitable: A very small benchtop lathe. One UK review said it wobbled on a Parkside.

Common questions

Does the adapter come in the box?

The bullets and the included-components line list an adapter that converts 1 inch x 8 TPI to 3/4 inch x 16 TPI, plus a chuck key, a T-Allen wrench and a 3/8 inch wood screw.

Will it fit a Draper or a Clarke?

UK reviews say it fitted a Draper 60988 and a Clarke 20 inch via the supplied adapter. Another UK review says the adapter has to be the right one.

Is it too heavy for a small lathe?

The listing weight is 2.32 kg. One UK review said it wobbled on a small Parkside and thought the chuck was too big for that lathe.

DEEFIINE k120405A1

Rank 3

DEEFIINE k120405A1

∼£130

Our view

The DEEFIINE k120405A1 is a 4 inch set at £130.30 on 1 inch × 8 TPI only, with five jaw sets claimed, a plate jaw, a screw chuck, two wood screws and a black tool box. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 120 reviews, and the notes contain two United Kingdom reviews. One of those treats it as a starter set and says the chuck key felt small. The bullets say nickel plate while the material attribute says stainless steel, so you should not treat either line as a corrosion test. No adapter is listed for 3/4 × 16 or M33. The set weighs 5.07 kg, which is the case as well as the chuck. It suits a confirmed 1×8 lathe if you want several jaw sets in one box, and it is too much mass, and the wrong thread, for a small bench or another spindle.

Pros

  • Five jaw sets claimed, plus a plate jaw
  • Case, screw chuck and two wood screws in the bullets
  • 4.6 from 120 reviews on amazon.co.uk
  • 1×8 direct, so the thread is unambiguous

Cons

  • 1×8 only, no 3/4×16 or M33 adapter
  • 5.07 kg
  • Only two UK reviews in the notes
  • Chuck key felt small in one of those reviews

Best for: A 1x8 lathe if you want several jaw sets in one case and will not need 3/4x16.

Less suitable: M33 or 3/4x16. No adapter is listed. The case weighs the set up to 5.07 kg.

The title and bullets say 1 inch x 8 TPI. They do not list another thread or an adapter.

How many UK reviews are quoted?

The listing line is 4.6 from 120. The notes contain two United Kingdom reviews.

Does the material line match the bullets?

The bullets say nickel plate. The material attribute says stainless steel.

DEEFIINE K120402A

Rank 4

DEEFIINE K120402A

∼£85

Our view

The DEEFIINE K120402A is a nickel 4 inch scroll at £85.16 with 1 inch × 8 TPI, an adapter to 3/4 × 16, two jaw sets and a screw chuck. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 209 reviews, the largest count in this set. UK reviewers describe it as a straight first chuck on that thread. The same notes record jaw play while sanding and vibration at speed, and one refund because the chuck did not fit. A UK review on a 1×8 Lumberjack lathe says jaws from another chuck did not fit, because the screw holes did not align. It weighs 2.93 kg. The listing does not claim a case, and one UK review says it arrived in cardboard. Choose it when you want two jaw sets on a measured 1×8 or 3/4×16 spindle, and skip it if you plan to reuse jaws from another brand.

Pros

  • Round jaws and a larger round set
  • 4.5 from 209 reviews, the largest count here
  • 3/4×16 adapter and a screw chuck listed
  • UK notes call it a straight first chuck when the thread matches

Cons

  • Jaw play while sanding
  • Vibration at speed in a UK review
  • No case; one buyer reported cardboard only
  • Jaws from another chuck did not fit

Best for: A first 1x8 or 3/4x16 chuck if you want two jaw sets rather than one.

Less suitable: Buying extra jaws from another brand. A UK review says Lumberjack jaws did not fit.

Common questions

Are two jaw sets included?

The title says 2PCS jaws. The bullets list round jaws and big round jaws, plus a screw chuck and the 3/4 x 16 adapter.

Will jaws from another chuck fit?

A UK review on a 1 inch x 8 TPI Lumberjack lathe says jaws from the other chuck did not fit because the screw holes did not align.

Does it come in a case?

The listing does not claim a case. One UK review says it arrived in cardboard and wanted a foam-lined box.

DEEFIINE k120401A1

Rank 5

DEEFIINE k120401A1

∼£76

Our view

The DEEFIINE k120401A1 is a nickel-plated 4 inch scroll at £75.98, the lowest price among the 4 inch sets that include 1 inch × 8 TPI and an adapter to 3/4 inch × 16 TPI. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 85 reviews. UK reviewers have turned bowls on a Clarke CWL1000. The bullets list a 3/8 inch wood screw, while the included-components line says only “Lathe Chuck”, so count the screw when the box arrives. More than one UK review describes play in the quarter jaws and wobble while hand sanding, even after tightening. Another says the work left the chuck when the rim was wrong. It weighs 2.56 kg and includes one jaw set. It is the best value here if the budget stays under £80 and the thread matches, and a poor choice when a still jaw matters for sanding.

Pros

  • £75.98, lowest of the 4 inch adapter sets
  • 1×8 body and a 3/4×16 adapter in the bullets
  • UK bowls turned on a Clarke CWL1000
  • Wood screw listed in the bullets

Cons

  • Jaw play and wobble while sanding in more than one UK review
  • Work left the chuck when the rim was wrong
  • One jaw set
  • Included-components line says only the chuck

Best for: A first chuck on 1x8 or 3/4x16 if the budget stops under £80.

Less suitable: Fine finishing. UK reviews describe jaw play and wobble while sanding.

Common questions

What thread does the adapter cover?

The bullets say 1 inch x 8 TPI, and 3/4 inch x 16 TPI using the adapter that converts 1 inch x 8 TPI to 3/4 inch x 16 TPI.

Do the jaws stay tight while sanding?

One UK review says the quarter jaws have play and wobble when hand sanding, even when tightened. Another says the chuck does not hold well.

Is a wood screw included?

The product bullets list a 3/8 inch wood screw. The included-components line says only Lathe Chuck.

DEEFIINE k120405A114

Rank 6

DEEFIINE k120405A114

∼£180

Our view

The DEEFIINE k120405A114 is a 4 inch set at £179.98 on 1 1/4 inch × 8 TPI, with an adapter to 1 inch × 8 TPI and no 3/4 × 16 adapter in the listing. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 78 reviews. The bullets claim five jaw sets, including a plate jaw, two wood screws and a black tool box. A UK review says the flat jaw is high-strength plastic and cracked when it was screwed onto the chuck, and the same notes mention chatter on the rails. Another UK review says 1 1/4 × 8 is not M33 × 3.5. The set weighs 5.07 kg, so a small bench lathe is carrying a case as well as a chuck. It fits a spindle that really is 1 1/4 × 8, or 1×8 with this adapter, and it is the wrong parcel for an M33 or 3/4 × 16 lathe.

Pros

  • 1 1/4 × 8 TPI with a 1×8 adapter in the box
  • Five jaw sets claimed, including a plate jaw
  • Black tool box claimed in the bullets
  • Two wood screws listed

Cons

  • UK review: plastic plate jaw cracked when screwed on
  • 5.07 kg
  • Not M33, and no 3/4 × 16 adapter
  • Rails described as chattering

Best for: A lathe that is actually 1 1/4 inch x 8 TPI, or 1x8 with this adapter.

Less suitable: An M33 spindle, or a 3/4 x 16 lathe. A UK review says this is not M33 and has no 3/4 x 16 adapter.

Common questions

Is 1 1/4 x 8 the same as M33?

A UK review says 1 1/4 inch x 8 TPI is not M33 x 3.5. The listing thread is 1 1/4 x 8, with an adapter to 1 x 8.

Does it include a 3/4 x 16 adapter?

A UK review says it does not. The adapter in the listing is 1 inch x 8 TPI to 1 1/4 inch x 8 TPI.

What happened to the flat jaw?

A UK review says the flat jaw is high-strength plastic and cracked when it was screwed onto the chuck.

DEEFIINE k120402AM33

Rank 7

DEEFIINE k120402AM33

∼£122

Our view

The DEEFIINE k120402AM33 is a 4 inch scroll at £121.98 whose title and bullets say M33 × 3.5, with an adapter the listing calls M18 × 2.5 rather than 1×8 or 3/4×16. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 64 reviews, and the notes contain only three UK reviews. One of those calls the jaws sloppy, and another buyer had not used the chuck. The title says two jaw sets, a round jaw and a big round jaw, and the bullets include a screw chuck. The bullets call the set nickel-plated while the material attribute says stainless steel, so the finish is not one claim. It weighs 2.93 kg. On that capture it ranked 1 in Power Lathe Chucks, which is a shelf rank, not a grip test. Buy it only after you have confirmed M33 × 3.5 and that M18 × 2.5 is the other thread you actually need.

Pros

  • M33 × 3.5 printed in the title and bullets
  • Round jaw and a larger round jaw
  • Screw chuck listed in the bullets
  • Ranked 1 in Power Lathe Chucks on that capture

Cons

  • Adapter is listed as M18 × 2.5, not 1×8 or 3/4×16
  • Nickel in the bullets, stainless on the attribute line
  • Only three UK reviews, and one calls the jaws sloppy

Best for: An M33 x 3.5 spindle, if you have checked that M18 x 2.5 is the other thread you need.

Less suitable: A 1x8 or 3/4x16 lathe. This box does not list those threads.

Common questions

Is this the M33 chuck?

The title and bullets say M33 x 3.5, with an adapter that converts M33 x 3.5 to M18 x 2.5. The thread-size line says M33 o M18.

Why do stainless and nickel both appear?

The bullets call it a nickel-plated set. The material attribute says stainless steel. The listing does not pick one.

How many jaw sets are in the box?

The title says 2PCS jaws. The bullets list a round jaw and a big round jaw.

DEEFIINE K0204-B

Rank 8

DEEFIINE K0204-B

∼£77

Our view

The DEEFIINE K0204-B is a blackened 4 inch scroll at £76.98 and 2.07 kg, the lightest 4 inch set in this capture, with 1 inch × 8 TPI and an adapter listed for 1×8 and 3/4×16. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 from 173 reviews. The bullets claim jaws that install in positive and negative directions, plus two 5 inch wrenches, and they do not list a wood screw. Some UK reviews say it holds, and one says reversing the jaws was fiddly the first time. Other UK reviews say the wood left the jaws despite a tight grip, and that the chuck loosened above about 550 rpm on a vintage Coronet. The capacity line is 102 mm. A low price and a light body do not cancel those grip notes. It can suit a small 1×8 or 3/4×16 lathe only if you accept that limit.

Pros

  • 2.07 kg, lightest of the 4 inch sets
  • 1×8 and 3/4×16 adapter in the bullets
  • Reversible jaws claimed
  • Some UK reviews say the hold is firm

Cons

  • UK reviews: wood left the jaws
  • Loosened above about 550 rpm on a Coronet
  • Jaws hard to align the first time
  • No wood screw in the bullets

Best for: A small lathe on 1x8 or 3/4x16, if you accept the UK grip complaints.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a hold that UK reviewers kept at speed. Two UK reviews describe the wood leaving.

Common questions

Does it include a wood screw?

Did UK reviewers keep the wood in the jaws?

One UK review says wood constantly flies out despite a tight grip. Another says it loosened above about 550 rpm on a vintage Coronet.

Can the jaws be reversed?

The bullets say the jaws can be installed in positive and negative directions. One UK review says reversing them was fiddly the first time.

NNBWKIXI 6 inch

Rank 9

NNBWKIXI 6 inch

∼£57

Our view

The NNBWKIXI 6 inch chuck is £56.92, the lowest price among the scroll-style listings, on 1 × 8 TPI, weighing 3.7 kg, with two tightening levers and no adapter in the included-components line. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 from 161 reviews. A UK review says it holds irregular wood once the thread numbers match, and that an adaptor had to be bought separately. The title and bullets say four jaws, while one UK review titles it a three-jaw chuck, so the jaw count is not settled. The bullets also name grinders, which is a different job from a bowl. The capacity line is 6.3 inches and the material attribute says alloy steel. It is a 1×8 option only if you already know you do not need 3/4×16 or M33.

Pros

  • £56.92, lowest scroll-style price in the set
  • Two tightening levers in the box
  • UK review: holds irregular wood once the thread matches
  • 6 inch body, capacity line 6.3 inches

Cons

  • No adapter in the components line
  • Four jaws in the title, three in one UK review
  • Bullets also name grinders
  • One UK buyer had to buy an adaptor

Best for: A 1 x 8 TPI spindle if you already know you do not need a 3/4 x 16 adapter.

Less suitable: A 3/4 x 16 or M33 lathe. A UK review needed an adaptor, and the box does not list one.

Risegun 35 mm

Rank 10

Risegun 35 mm

∼£22

Our view

The Risegun is a 35 mm zinc-alloy three-jaw at £21.83, threaded M12 × 1 mm, weighing 210 g, with a drill connecting rod rather than a lathe-spindle adapter. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.0 from 134 reviews. UK reviewers describe snooker and pool cue repairs, and one says it works if you do not need an actual lathe. The listing does not list M33, 1×8 or 3/4×16, so it will not screw onto those wood-lathe spindles. One UK review says the chuck cracked after a single use, and another says the metal is soft and only fit for very light work. The bullets claim rust resistance, which is not a corrosion test. At this price it is a cue or drill hold, and it is not a bowl chuck.

Pros

  • £21.83
  • 210 g, light enough for a drill rod
  • UK reviews describe cue repairs
  • M12 × 1 mm is printed, so the mismatch is visible

Cons

  • Cracked after one use in a UK review
  • Soft metal, light work only, in a UK review
  • M12 × 1 mm, not M33, 1×8 or 3/4×16
  • 35 mm body, not a 4 inch scroll

Best for: Cue repairs or a drill-mounted hold, which is what UK reviews describe.

Less suitable: Bowl turning on a wood lathe. The thread on the listing is M12 × 1 mm.

Generic 50 mm

Rank 11

Generic 50 mm

∼£56

Our view

The generic 50 mm chuck is listed at £56.35 with a printed thread of 3/4-16 UNC, a metal body of 534 g and a capacity line of 1.96 inches. Amazon.co.uk shows 1.0 from 1 review. That United Kingdom review says it feels solid and is definitely not the correct size as described. The included-components line says no, so the listing does not confirm a key, a screw or an adapter. The title also mentions a treadmill, which is not a woodturning job, and on that capture it ranked 88 in Power Lathe Chucks. The listing does not show a successful UK fit. Leave it if you need the diameter on the title to be the part that arrives.

Pros

  • 3/4-16 UNC is printed on the listing
  • The one UK review says the body feels solid
  • 50 mm and 1.96 inches are both printed, so the size claim is checkable

Cons

  • 1.0 from 1 review
  • That review says it is not the correct size
  • Included components listed as no
  • Title also says treadmill

Best for: No successful UK fit is shown on the listing.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs the size on the title. The only review says it is wrong.

Common questions

What did the UK review say?

The only review, from the United Kingdom, says it feels solid but is definitely not the correct size as described. The listing line is 1.0 from 1.

What is in the box?

The included-components line says no.

What thread is printed?

Thread size is 3/4-16 UNC. Diameter is 50 millimetres. Capacity line is 1.96 inches.

How we compared

We compared 11 wood lathe chucks from amazon.co.uk listings captured on 16 October 2026. A twelfth listing in the batch is missing and is not invented here. Prices, stars, and review counts are those shelf lines. There was no grip trial and no laboratory score. The five weights below sum to 100. A higher score ranks a listing inside this set. It does not mean the chuck is the safest, and it is not a UKCA mark.

1

Spindle thread

25%

Worth 25 of 100, from a 0–22 thread score. A 1×8 body with a stated 3/4×16 adapter and a named UK lathe in reviews sits at the top. 1×8 only, an M33 line with an odd second thread, 1 1/4 × 8, M12 × 1 mm, and a disputed 3/4-16 size score lower.

2

Amazon stars

29%

Worth 29 of 100. Points are the amazon.co.uk star rating divided by 5, times 25, rounded half up. The star line is not multiplied by 20 to make the editorial score.

3

Review volume

17%

Worth 17 of 100, from a 0–15 volume score. 200 or more reviews score the top of that block. A single review scores 2. A thin UK sample against a larger headline count is cut in the deductions, not double-counted here.

4

Shelf price

16%

Worth 16 of 100, from a 0–14 price score. A lower shelf price scores higher only inside a usable class. The £21.83 mini chuck is a different tool, so a low price there does not make it the best value.

5

UK hold notes

13%

Worth 13 of 100, from a 0–11 hold score, then separate deductions. Named fit on a Draper or Clarke, without wood leaving, scores toward the top. Jaw play, a blank that left, a crack, or a size complaint scores lower. A fault used here is not deducted again at the same size.

Wood lathe chuck buying guide

A wood lathe chuck only works if the spindle thread matches, the jaws are for wood, and the lathe can carry the weight. The eleven listings below are not one class of tool. Start with the thread you measured, then the jaw set, then the kilogram figure on the listing. Stars do not cancel a UK note that the blank left the jaws. The top pick and the best value are both 4 inch scrolls with 1×8 and a 3/4×16 adapter, and neither is the pen chuck or the M33 listing.

What is a wood lathe chuck?

A wood lathe chuck screws onto the headstock spindle and grips a bowl blank, a spindle foot, or a pen blank. In a UK hobby workshop it is usually the second purchase after the lathe. A 4 inch scroll is the general bowl chuck in this set. A two-jaw pen chuck and a 35 mm drill chuck are different tools, and they are listed so that difference is visible before you order. The thread, including the pitch, comes first. M33 × 3.5 mm is the modern UK hobby default.

Best for

  • A first bowl on a measured 1×8 or 3/4×16 spindle
  • Pen blanks on a measured 1×8 spindle

Not ideal for

  • A spindle you have not measured
  • A very small benchtop lathe, or jaws from another brand

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying on diameter and skipping the thread

    A 4 inch body does not tell you the spindle. M33 × 3.5, 1×8, 3/4×16, and 1 1/4 × 8 are different threads. 1 1/4 × 8 is not M33, which a UK review of the £179.98 set states.

  2. 2

    Treating the adapter as universal

An adapter only covers the second thread printed on that listing. Extra length moves the work off the bearings and adds a joint. The M33 set’s adapter is listed as M18 × 2.5, not 1×8 or 3/4×16.

  3. 3

Expecting another brand’s jaws to fit

These listings do not claim Nova, Record, or Axminster jaws. A UK review of the nickel two-jaw set says jaws from another chuck did not fit, because the screw holes did not align.

What to weigh up

Spindle thread

High

The first check is the spindle thread, including the pitch. M33 × 3.5 mm is the modern UK hobby default. 1 inch × 8 TPI and 3/4 inch × 16 TPI are the older and import pattern. Beaufort Ink’s look-up puts many Draper, Clarke, and Coronet machines on 3/4 × 16, and Axminster craft lathes on 1 × 8. Peter Child publishes a thread table and a way to measure. Measure the spindle you have.

Jaws, weight, and UK hold

High

Woodturning jaws here are round jaws, or jaws the listing says can be fitted positive and negative. These listings do not publish a dovetail angle, so none is stated. One UK buyer found jaws from another chuck did not fit the nickel two-jaw body, because the screw holes did not align. Do not plan on Nova, Record, or Axminster jaws for these chucks. The 4 inch sets weigh about 2.07–2.93 kg. The five-jaw cases weigh 5.07 kg, case included.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

First bowl on 1×8 or 3/4×16

You have measured 1 inch × 8 TPI or 3/4 inch × 16 TPI and you want one round jaw set plus a wood screw. UK reviews name a Draper 60988 and a Clarke 20 inch. Skip it on a very small benchtop: one UK review said it wobbled on a Parkside.

Same threads, under £80

You want the lowest-priced 4 inch set in this comparison that still includes 1×8 and an adapter to 3/4×16. UK notes include bowls on a Clarke CWL1000, and also jaw play while sanding and a blank that left when the rim was wrong.

Pen blanks on 1×8

You drill square pen blanks, including blanks that are not perfectly square, on a measured 1 inch × 8 TPI spindle. The clamp line is 8 × 8 mm to 23 × 23 mm. Skip the 4 inch bowl sets for this job.

Common questions about wood lathe chucks

Which wood lathe chuck is the top pick in this set?
The top pick is the SIIIXS CK0401A1 at about £83.01. The box includes 1 inch × 8 TPI and an adapter to 3/4 inch × 16 TPI, the listing shows 4.6 from 157 reviews, and UK reviews name a Draper 60988 and a Clarke 20 inch. One UK review still says it wobbled on a small Parkside. The rank is inside this set, not a lab test, and not a claim the chuck never throws wood.
How much does a wood lathe chuck cost?
On the 16 October 2026 amazon.co.uk capture, the 35 mm three-jaw is about £21.83 and the pen chuck is about £44.47. General scroll chucks here sit from about £56.92 to about £85.16. The M33 set is about £121.98, and the five-jaw cases are about £130.30 and £179.98. Off Amazon that day, Record listed an SC3 from £99.99 and Axminster listed packages from about £108.32 to £169.99. These are shelf figures, not today’s basket.
Which spindle thread fits a UK hobby lathe?
No British Standard requires M33. Measure anyway, using a thread table for diameter and pitch. A chuck fits the printed thread, and an adapter only where the box includes one.
Is 1 1/4 inch × 8 TPI the same as M33?
No. A UK review of the DEEFIINE set at about £179.98 says 1 1/4 inch × 8 TPI is not M33 × 3.5. That listing’s adapter goes to 1 inch × 8 TPI, and the same review says there is no 3/4 × 16 adapter. If your spindle is M33, that box is the wrong parcel. If you cannot tell pitch from diameter, have the spindle measured before you order.
Should you buy an adapter or the direct thread?
Buy an adapter only for a second thread you have measured. Extra length moves the work off the bearings and adds a joint that can loosen. Turners who will keep the lathe prefer the direct thread. In this set the SIIIXS and three DEEFIINE 4 inch chucks list 1×8 plus a 3/4×16 adapter. The 6 inch chuck does not list an adapter. The M33 listing’s second thread is printed as M18 × 2.5.
Will Nova, Record, or Axminster jaws fit these chucks?
Do not assume they will. These listings do not claim Nova, Record, or Axminster jaw fit. One UK buyer of the DEEFIINE two-jaw set on a 1×8 Lumberjack lathe found other-brand jaws did not fit, because the screw holes did not align. A round jaw, or a line that says positive and negative, is not a published dovetail angle. Bottoming the tenon so the shoulder misses the jaw face is a common way to lose the hold.
Can a wood lathe chuck unscrew in reverse?
It can, on these listings. None of them mention an ASR groove or a locking ring, so reverse can unscrew the chuck from the spindle. UK reviews of the black DEEFIINE also describe the wood leaving the jaws, and the chuck loosening above about 550 rpm on a vintage Coronet. The 4.3 from 173 reviews does not cancel those notes. At work, HSE WIS28 covers holding and ejection. A hobby shed is not automatically under PUWER, and a chuck is not HSE-approved.
What should you check before you order a wood lathe chuck?
Measure the spindle, including the pitch, before you compare diameters. What to settle before you start is the short list for that check. Then confirm the jaws are woodturning jaws, and that the lathe can carry about 2.1–2.9 kg for a 4 inch set or 5.07 kg for a five-jaw case. Buy an adapter only for a second thread you have measured. A twelfth listing in the batch is missing, so this page does not describe it.

Our verdict

Inside these eleven amazon.co.uk listings, the top pick is the SIIIXS CK0401A1 at about £83.01: 4.6 from 157 reviews, 1 inch × 8 TPI with an adapter to 3/4 inch × 16 TPI, and UK fit notes on a Draper 60988 and a Clarke 20 inch. One UK review still says it wobbled on a small Parkside. The best value is the DEEFIINE k120401A1 at about £75.98, the lowest-priced 4 inch set here with that same thread pair, at 4.4 from 85 reviews, with UK notes of jaw play and a blank that left. The £21.83 mini chuck is cheaper and is a different class, so it does not take that place. Neither pick means the chuck never throws wood.
