Wood lathe chuck buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You already own the lathe, and an amazon.co.uk search for a chuck mixes 4 inch scrolls with a 6 inch body, a pen chuck and a 35 mm drill chuck. A wood lathe chuck buying guide only helps if the first filter is the spindle, not the diameter in the title. This page follows the [wood lathe chuck comparison](/hub/workshop/wood-lathe-chuck) in that order: thread, then jaw type, then weight, then price. The Products Compared editorial team used public UK pages and the amazon.co.uk captures of 16 October 2026. We did not run a lathe test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Read the spindle before you read the brand

M33 × 3.5 mm, 1 inch × 8 TPI, 3/4 inch × 16 TPI and 1 1/4 inch × 8 TPI are four different purchases. A diameter without the pitch sends the chuck back, because the threads will cross or will not start. Beaufort Ink puts many Draper, Clarke and Coronet machines on 3/4 × 16, and many Axminster craft lathes on 1 × 8, and tells you to measure because makers change the spindle. Peter Child adds that a pressed-steel Clarke bed can be 3/4 × 10, so the badge on the headstock is not the specification. M33 × 3.5 is the usual UK hobby default only when you are buying the lathe as well. A UK reviewer who bought a 1 1/4 × 8 chuck said that size is not M33 × 3.5. How to check pitch, and what an adapter adds in overhang, is on the M33 versus 1×8 TPI page.

A woodturning jaw, not a metal chuck

The second filter is the jaw, and it is a shape problem rather than a star-rating problem. A scroll chuck with a woodturning profile grips a bowl tenon or a recess. An independent metalworking chuck is a different tool, even when the title says “4 jaw”. The listings in this capture say “round jaw” or “jaws positive and negative”. They do not publish a dovetail angle. One round set covers a first bowl if the tenon meets the jaw face. If the blank wobbles or leaves the jaws, that fault is on the wood lathe chuck jaws page.

Weight, then the number of jaw sets

Only after thread and jaw type does the mass on the spindle matter. The 4 inch sets in this capture weigh about 2.07 kg to 2.93 kg. The five-jaw cases are 5.07 kg. Record’s SC3 starts from £99.99, and Axminster’s GK88 chuck and backplate from £108.32 on 16 October 2026. Who should pay that is on the best wood lathe chuck page.

What to leave for later

A direct thread is preferable to an insert, because the insert adds a joint. A 35 mm zinc three-jaw on M12 × 1 mm, at 210 g, is a cue-repair or drill hold in the UK reviews, not a bowl chuck. A 2 inch two-jaw for square stock from 8 × 8 mm to 23 × 23 mm is a pen chuck. Buying either for a bowl is a class error. If the spindle is an odd size such as a 1 1/2 inch Graduate, stop and have the thread identified rather than guess an adapter.

Common questions

What do I check before the brand?
Check the spindle diameter and the pitch, then whether any adapter in the box is that exact conversion. Brand tables from Beaufort Ink and Peter Child are a shortlist, and both tell you to measure because Draper, Clarke and Coronet machines are not one thread. A pressed-steel Clarke can be 3/4 × 10, which is neither 3/4 × 16 nor 1 × 8.
Is a 4 inch chuck the same object as a 35 mm three-jaw?
No. A 4 inch scroll in this set is a bowl-style chuck at about 2 to 3 kg, on 1 × 8, M33 or 1 1/4 × 8. The 35 mm listing is a zinc three-jaw on M12 × 1 mm, at 210 g, and UK reviews use it for cue repairs or on a drill. The search page places them together. The spindle does not.
Will an adapter in the box fit every UK lathe?
No. The adapters described on these listings convert one printed thread to one other printed thread, such as 1 × 8 to 3/4 × 16. They do not cover M33, 1 1/4 × 8 and 3/4 × 16 in one sleeve. Extra length also moves the work away from the headstock bearings. If your measured thread is not one of the two names in the bullet, the adapter does not help.
How heavy is too heavy for a small bench lathe?
One UK review called a 4 inch chuck too big for a small Parkside. The five-jaw cases are 5.07 kg before you add a blank. If the lathe is a short benchtop, start with the lighter scroll that matches the thread, and treat a 5 kg case as a later choice. There is no published kilogram limit that fits every lathe.
When should I stop and get the thread identified?
Stop if you cannot separate pitch from diameter, if the spindle is an unusual size, or if you are about to buy on the word “Clarke” or “Draper” alone. Also stop if employees use the lathe, because workplace duties are a different question from a hobby shed, or if the chuck body, scroll or a jaw screw is already damaged.
