Roof steps comparison 2026

The best roof steps, compared.

Top pick: GIONAR 2-pack door step Best value: Eidoct folding latch door step – Best value in this set at about £6.66, because nothing cheaper here has a review sample this large. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

A roof step is a folding pedal that hooks over the door striker, so you can reach a roof box, roof bars, a kayak, or the roof of a car, or van. One listing is different: a wooden aid for a camper pop-top, not a door hook. Any angle gears have to stay shut under your weight. UK reviewers report hooks that do not fit, and strikers, including a VW, that sit too high once the hook is on. A car-door step is not a BS 8634 house roof ladder and not a BS EN 131 portable ladder. The [roof steps buying guide](/hub/workshop/roof-steps/sub/roof-steps-buying-guide) sets the striker, tread, and load checks. You use it to reach a roof box, roof bars, a kayak, or the roof itself when you are one tread short of the ground. Open the door and look at the striker before you buy.

The best roof steps in detail

GIONAR 2-pack door step

Rank 1

GIONAR 2-pack door step

∼£11

Our view

The GIONAR two-pack is £11.29, and the bullets claim 550 lb, a glass breaker, and two steps in the components line. The technical table says 50 g and 50 x 10 x 5 mm, which conflicts with the bullet folded size of 5.9 x 2.9 x 3.1 inches, and the file does not say which line is wrong. The only UK text says the step does not fit that car and still calls the quality good. The star line is 4.5 from 7, and it matches the one-piece GIONAR listing, so it is not a second sample. Paint protection is claimed, though no pad is listed among the components. A 550 lb claim beside a 50 g table weight is a listing conflict, not a measured capacity.

Pros

  • Two steps listed in the components
  • Claimed glass breaker
  • £11.29 for the pair

Cons

  • Table weight 50 g conflicts with a metal step
  • One review: does not fit
  • 4.5 from 7 is shared with the one-piece listing
  • 550 lb is a seller claim

Best for: Only after you have looked at your own striker. The file does not show a successful fit.

Less suitable: Anyone treating 50 g or 550 lb as measured facts.

Common questions

Why is the weight 50 g?

That is the technical-table line, next to 50 x 10 x 5 mm. The bullets describe a folded size of 5.9 x 2.9 x 3.1 inches. Both cannot describe one metal pedal. The file does not say which is wrong.

Does the review say it fits?

The only UK text says it does not fit that car. The star line is 4.5 from 7, shared with the one-piece ASIN.

GIONAR door step, 1 piece

Rank 2

GIONAR door step, 1 piece

Our view

The one-piece GIONAR is £6.99, listed as orange, and the bullets claim 550 lb plus a glass breaker. The title says 1PCS and the components line says one step, while Number of Items says 2 and Number of Packs says 1. The technical table again says 50 g and 50 x 10 x 5 mm, set against a bullet folded size of 5.9 x 2.9 x 3.1 inches. The only UK text is the same no-fit note as the two-pack: it does not fit that car, and the reviewer still calls the quality good. Those stars, 4.5 from 7, are shared with the two-pack rather than a separate count. The £6.99 price and model 4656 do not settle the pack count or the weight.

Pros

  • £6.99
  • Orange finish stated
  • Components line says one step

Cons

  • Number of Items says 2 against a one-piece title
  • 50 g table line
  • Does not fit, in the only text
  • Shared 4.5 from 7 with the two-pack

Best for: Not established. The file has no review of a successful fit.

Less suitable: A buyer who needs a known fit or a consistent contents count.

Common questions

Is it one step or two?

The title and the components line say one. Number of Items says 2 and Number of Packs says 1.

What does the only review say?

It does not fit that reviewer’s car. The reviewer still calls the quality good. The star line says 7 reviews.

Eidoct folding latch door step

Rank 3

Eidoct folding latch door step

Our view

Across 69 amazon.co.uk reviews, rated 4.3, the Eidoct hook at £6.66 is the top pick in this set for occasional roof-box and roof-bar work. It is also the best value: nothing cheaper here has a review sample this large. UK reviewers use it on SUVs, a roof bag, a Skoda Yeti, and a kayak. The tread is one foot, a Golf catch sat too high to reach, and one reviewer reported a crease dent. The 400 lb line is the listing’s claim, not a test.

Pros

  • £6.66 with 4.3 from 69 reviews, on sale since September 2021
  • UK reviewers reach roof racks, a roof box, a SUP, and a kayak
  • A reviewer at 120 kg felt secure loading a roof box
  • Hook-on fit, listed weight 270 g

Cons

  • Reviewers stand on one foot
  • A VW Golf catch was too high to use the step
  • One review reports a crease dent in a panel
  • 400 lb is a seller claim

Best for: Occasional roof-box, roof-bar, or kayak strapping when your striker is proud of the frame and a one-foot tread is enough.

Less suitable: A high striker you cannot get a foot onto, or anyone who needs both feet flat on the tread.

Common questions

Does the listing state a load?

Yes. The bullets say the aluminium pedal can bear 400 pounds, about 181 kg. No test report is in the file.

Will it fit every door?

The listing says any front or back door. A UK reviewer on a VW Golf could fit the hook, but the catch was too high to reach the step.

Does it include a rubber face?

The bullets say there is rubber on the back so the door or latch is not damaged. One UK review still reports a crease dent in a panel.

Eidoct latch door step

Rank 4

Eidoct latch door step

Our view

This is a second Eidoct ASIN, model 002, at £7.55 with 4.3 from 65 reviews. UK reviewers use it for a roof, a VW Caddy rack, a roof tent, and a roof box. One called it a metal plate with a folding hook and dear for what it is. The rubber foot fell off on first use in one review, and the door then marked the car. Another reviewer passed on mechanic advice that repeated weight can compromise the door catch.

Pros

  • 4.3 from 65 reviews
  • Reaches a roof or rack without standing on the seats
  • Used on a VW Caddy and for a roof tent
  • Folds for the door pocket

Cons

  • £7.55 against the £6.66 Eidoct with a larger sample
  • Rubber foot fell off in one review
  • One reviewer says it does not fit
  • Door-catch warning is one person’s report of advice

Best for: The same one-foot hook job as B09GMCSGX7 if this ASIN is the one in stock.

Less suitable: Buyers who can get B09GMCSGX7, which has the same model number, a lower price, and a separate larger sample.

Common questions

Is this the same model as the £6.66 Eidoct?

Both files list item model number 002 and brand Eidoct. They are different ASINs, prices, and review texts.

What happened to the rubber foot?

One UK review says the rubber foot fell off on first use and the closing door then marked the car.

What load does the listing claim?

400 pounds, about 181 kg. That figure is the seller’s line. No test report is in the file.

SHYSBV 2-pack door step, yellow

Rank 5

SHYSBV 2-pack door step, yellow

∼£12

Our view

SHYSBV sells two yellow folding hooks for £11.95, package 470 g, with a claimed 550 lb (250 kg) and a glass-breaker tip. Four UK texts sit under a count of six. One reviewer cleaned a car roof and noted a slight wobble. Another found them too small for a foothold. The bullets say to fit the moulding strips before use. The sample is too small for a pattern of defects. A glass-breaker tip is not shown here to break a windscreen.

Pros

  • Two steps in the pack
  • A reviewer reached a car roof to clean it
  • Folding hook and a claimed hammer tip
  • Moulding strips are mentioned to protect paint

Cons

  • Foothold too small in one of four texts
  • Slight wobble in one text
  • Only six reviews, and two texts are missing
  • 250 kg is a seller claim

Best for: A pair of high-visibility hooks if you have checked the striker and can accept a small tread.

Less suitable: A wide, both-feet platform. This sample does not show one.

Common questions

How many are in the box?

The title says a 2-pack. The file does not list a separate contents line beyond that.

What should you fit before use?

The bullets say to apply the moulding strips first so the step does not scratch the car.

How many reviews are in the file?

The listing line is 4.2 from 6. The file contains four UK texts.

WODHMIEY 7-angle door step, silver

Rank 6

WODHMIEY 7-angle door step, silver

∼£19

Our view

The silver WODHMIEY is the adjustable pedal in this set: seven angles claimed, 23.37 x 6.6 x 14.22 cm, 800 g, £18.99. The listing shows 4.1 from 89 reviews, and the orange and black ASINs repeat that same review block, so 89 is one pool. UK reviewers use it for roof boxes, a Ford Tourneo, a Ford Kuga kayak, and timber on bars. The same pool includes a second-use break and a gear that opened while someone was standing on it. There is no load figure in the bullets.

Pros

  • Seven angles claimed, for a sloping striker
  • Larger tread than the cheap pegs: one foot, or both at a push
  • 4.1 from 89 in a shared pool, rank 4 in Roof Box Accessories
  • Folds flat; soft rubber claimed

Cons

  • £18.99 and no stated load figure
  • Shared reviews include a break on the second use
  • A gear opened under a standing user in that pool
  • Tread still short for larger feet, and some catches sit too high

Best for: A sloping rear striker, if you accept the shared failure reports and test the gears before you trust them.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants a step with no gear to come loose. The fixed Eidoct hook is the stronger review sample.

Common questions

Do the three colours have separate reviews?

No. Silver, orange, and black files repeat the same texts and the same 4.1 from 89. Count that pool once.

What load does this listing state?

The bullets say it supports heavy loads. They do not give a number.

What failed in the reviews?

In the shared UK texts, one unit broke on the second use and a gear came loose while a reviewer was standing on it.

WODHMIEY 7-angle door step, orange

Rank 7

WODHMIEY 7-angle door step, orange

∼£19

Our view

The orange WODHMIEY is a colour of the same seven-angle aluminium pedal, priced at £18.99, with a listed weight of 740 g against 800 g on the silver listing and the same 23.37 x 6.6 x 14.22 cm size. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.1 from 89 reviews, and the texts in this file match the silver file, so the 89 is one pool. Shared comments cover roof boxes, a Ford Tourneo, a Ford Kuga kayak, and timber on bars. The same pool includes a break on the second use and a gear that opened while someone was standing on the step. Nothing in the file shows a fault or a praise that belongs only to the orange finish. The bullets claim seven angles and soft rubber, and they do not state a load figure. Choose orange if you want the hook seen, and do not add these stars on top of the silver count.

Pros

  • Seven angles claimed
  • Orange finish if you want the hook seen
  • Same shared reports of roof-box and kayak use

Cons

  • Same shared break and gear-opening reports
  • No separate review sample
  • No load figure

Best for: The adjustable pedal in orange, with the same limits as the silver ASIN.

Less suitable: Counting this as extra evidence on top of the silver listing.

Common questions

How does orange differ from silver?

The file changes the colour, the listed weight to 740 g, and the part number. Size, price, and the review texts match the silver ASIN.

Is the 89-review count new?

No. It is the same line and the same texts as silver B0DB8BSY6F and black B0DB8CQ54B.

WODHMIEY 7-angle door step, black

Rank 8

WODHMIEY 7-angle door step, black

∼£19

Our view

The black WODHMIEY is the same seven-angle pedal at £18.99, listed at 770 g against 800 g in silver and 740 g in orange, with the same 23.37 x 6.6 x 14.22 cm size. The review texts and the 4.1 from 89 line match the silver and orange files, so treat the stars as one pool. Shared UK comments include roof-box use, and also a unit that broke on the second use and a gear that came loose underfoot. This file does not add a black-only review. Seven angles and soft rubber are claimed, and no load number is printed. A black finish does not change a sloping striker, or the need to test the gears before you trust them.

Pros

  • Seven angles claimed
  • Black finish
  • Same shared roof-box comments

Cons

  • Shared failure reports
  • No black-only sample
  • No load figure

Best for: The adjustable pedal in black, with the same shared limits.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants a third independent set of 89 reviews.

No. The file repeats the silver and orange review texts and the 4.1 from 89 line.

SUNUCO pop-top climbing aid

Rank 9

SUNUCO pop-top climbing aid

∼£29

Our view

SUNUCO is the only kept product that is not a door-striker hook. It is a wooden step, 8.5 cm by 31 cm, 300 g, £28.99, named for a VW California Beach and a Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo pop-top, and also described as a tablet holder. One UK text calls it a robust extra step into a pop-top. The star line is 3.8 from 6, so five texts are missing. The bullets do not say that it folds.

Pros

  • Made for a pop-top, which the door hooks are not
  • 300 g and a stated size
  • One UK reviewer uses it to get into a camper pop-top

Cons

  • £28.99 with one text in a count of six
  • Not a roof-box tool
  • Folding is asked on the page and not described
  • Load is not stated

Best for: A pop-top bed in a van the listing names, if you accept a single written review.

Less suitable: Loading a roof box from outside the vehicle. Buy a door hook for that.

Common questions

Is this a door-latch step?

No. The listing is a climbing aid for a camper pop-up roof and a tablet holder. It does not describe a striker hook.

Which vans are named?

VW California Beach and Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo. The page also asks about other campervans and does not answer in the specs.

How many reviews are written out?

The line is 3.8 from 6. The file contains one UK text.

GZDILUOGS 2-pack door step, orange

Rank 10

GZDILUOGS 2-pack door step, orange

∼£12

Our view

GZDILUOGS lists two orange aluminium hooks at £11.99, with a closed size of 16 x 8.6 x 1.5 cm, a second size line of 9 x 6 x 2 cm, an item weight of 225 g, and a claimed 250 kg. A glass-breaker tip is described as stainless steel, and the tread is described as textured. The page asks whether the step damages paint; the components line says car door pedal and does not include a pad. There is no Customer Reviews line and no review text, so the rating in this file is missing. Model DLUK0024 gives you a size to set beside a one-foot peg, and it does not show how the hook sits on a striker. The 250 kg line and the universal-fit wording are seller claims. Until a UK review exists, this listing is a specification sheet rather than evidence of a roof-box job.

Pros

  • Two-pack at £11.99
  • Closed size and 225 g are stated as a pair of figures that can belong to a small pedal
  • 250 kg is stated in kilograms, not only in pounds

Cons

  • No star line and no review text
  • Paint protection is a question on the page, not a listed pad
  • 250 kg is a seller claim
  • Universal fit is untested in this file

Best for: Only as a listed two-pack with a stated size. There is no UK review in the file to show how it behaves.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants a review sample before they stand on a hook.

Common questions

Are there any reviews?

No. The file has no Customer Reviews line and no review text, so the rating is recorded as missing.

Does the listing include a paint pad?

The page asks whether it damages paint. Included components say car door pedal. A rubber pad is not listed.

What load is printed?

250 kg, also written as the maximum weight capacity. That figure is the seller’s line.

How we compared

Ten roof steps on amazon.co.uk were scored from the listing facts in this set on 16 October 2026. The editorial score uses striker fit as described in UK reviews, tread and angle, the stated load as a claim only, paint protection and reported faults, then stars and whether the review pool is shared. There was no load test. A 550 lb line, a glass-breaker tip, and three colour ASINs with the same texts are not capacity.

1

Striker fit

30%

Whether UK reviews show a hook on a proud U-shaped striker, or a catch that is flush, covered, or too high to reach once the hook is on.

2

Tread and angle

25%

One foot or a wider pedal, and whether a sloping striker still has a tread you can stand on. A seven-angle claim is not a level platform.

3

Claimed load

15%

The seller figure, kept as a claim. No file here contains a test report, and a 50 g table line is not averaged into a 550 lb bullet.

4

Paint and reported faults

15%

Rubber or strips on the listing, and UK notes of a lost foot, a crease, or a gear that opened underfoot.

5

Reviews and the job

15%

Stars damped by count, with a shared pool counted once. A door hook and a pop-top aid are not scored as the same job.

Roof step buying guide

Start with the striker on your own door, then the tread, then the load line as a claim. A door hook and a pop-top aid are different tools. The notes below follow that order for these ten amazon.co.uk listings. Prices and stars are the UK figures checked on 16 October 2026.

What is a roof step?

A roof step in this amazon.co.uk set is a folding pedal that hooks over the U-shaped striker on a car, SUV, or van door. You use it to reach a roof box, roof bars, a kayak, or the roof itself when you are one tread short of the ground. One kept listing is not that tool. The SUNUCO is a wooden aid for climbing into a camper pop-top, and it is also described as a tablet holder. Neither type belongs on a tiled house roof. Open the door and look at the striker before you buy.

Best for

  • Drivers who load a roof box or bars a few times a year and cannot reach the straps from the ground
  • Owners of tall SUVs and vans who can still get a foot onto a striker-height pedal
  • Camper owners who need an interior step into a pop-top, which is not a door hook

Not ideal for

  • A tiled house roof, or any pitch that needs a BS 8634 roof ladder
  • A flush or covered striker, or a catch that sits too high once the hook is on
  • Employees who must work on vehicle roofs, where the climb should be avoided if it can be

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying on the word universal

The listing line is not your striker. UK reviews include hooks that do not fit, and a VW Golf catch that was too high to reach once the hook was on. Look at the door before you pay.

  2. 2

Using the pedal on a house roof

These hooks are not BS EN 131 ladders and not BS 8634 roof ladders. A pitched house roof, or staff working on a vehicle roof, needs proper access. A consumer hook has no guard rail.

  3. 3

    Trusting 550 lb beside a 50 g line

The GIONAR table says 50 g and 50 x 10 x 5 mm, against a bullet size in inches and a 550 lb claim. The three WODHMIEY colours are one review pool, not three tests. Shut the door only after you have unhooked the step.

What to weigh up

Striker fit, tread and angle

High

The first check is the striker, not the price. Open the door and look for a U-shape that sticks out of the frame. Flush, covered, or odd shapes will not take a hook. Universal is a seller line. UK reviewers report steps that do not fit, and strikers that sit too high once the hook is on. A VW Golf catch took the Eidoct hook and still left the step out of reach. If that is your door, a dearer hook of the same shape will not fix it. Tread is the second check. Simple pegs are often one foot only.

Load claims, paint and the job

High

Read every load line as a claim. Eidoct states 400 lb, about 181 kg. SHYSBV and GZDILUOGS state 250 kg. The GIONAR bullets state 550 lb, about 249 kg, beside a technical table of 50 g and 50 x 10 x 5 mm. Those two GIONAR lines cannot both describe one metal pedal, and the file does not say which is wrong. The WODHMIEY bullets say heavy loads and give no number. No test report is in these files. A striker that is strong in a crash is not a licence for any pedal load.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Occasional roof box

You load a roof box, bars, or a kayak a few times a year, and the striker sticks out. The Eidoct folding latch door step is about £6.66, with 4.3 from 69 reviews. The tread is one foot, and a high catch will not work.

Sloping rear striker

You want the tread nearer level on a sloping catch, and you will test the gears before you stand on them. The silver WODHMIEY claims seven angles at about £18.99. The 4.1 from 89 is one pool shared with the other colours, and that pool includes a gear that opened underfoot.

Camper pop-top

You need an interior step into a pop-top, not a hook on the door. The SUNUCO wooden aid is about £28.99, named for a VW California Beach and a Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo. One UK text is in a count of six. It is the wrong tool for a roof box.

Common questions about roof steps

What is the best roof step in this set for a roof box?
The top pick is the Eidoct folding latch door step, about £6.66, with 4.3 from 69 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK reviewers use it for roof racks, a roof box, a SUP, and a kayak. The tread is one foot, a VW Golf catch sat too high to use, and one review reports a crease dent. The 400 lb line is the listing’s claim, not a test. It is also the best value, because nothing cheaper here has a review sample this large.
How much does a roof step cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this set, simple hooks and two-packs run from about £6.66 to about £11.99. The adjustable seven-angle WODHMIEY pedals are about £18.99 each. The wooden SUNUCO pop-top aid is about £28.99. Halfords lists a Summit Roof Access Step at £14.99 with a stated 125 kg, and that product is not an ASIN here. A dearer hook of the same shape will not help if your striker is already too high to reach.
Will a roof step fit every car?
No. Open the door and look for a U-shaped striker that sticks out. Flush, covered, or odd shapes will not take a hook. Universal is a seller line. A UK reviewer fitted the Eidoct hook on a VW Golf, but the catch was too high to reach the step. Another review says a step does not fit that car. Check the striker on your own door before you buy, including the rear door if that is where you load.
Is a car door roof step the same as a roof ladder?
No. These door hooks are not BS EN 131 portable ladders, and they are not BS 8634 portable roof ladders for pitches from 25° to 65°. A consumer hook has no guard rail. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 bind employers, not a private driver washing their own car. If employees must get onto a vehicle roof, avoid the climb where reasonably practicable. A pitched house roof needs proper access, such as mobile scaffolding, not this pedal.
Can I trust a 250 kg or 550 lb load claim on a roof step?
Treat it as a seller claim. No test report is in these files. Eidoct states 400 lb, about 181 kg. Several cheap hooks state 550 lb, about 249 kg, or 250 kg. The WODHMIEY bullets say heavy loads and give no number. The GIONAR table says 50 g beside a 550 lb line, and those two figures cannot both describe one metal pedal. Do not read a crash-strong striker as a licence for any pedal load.
What is the SUNUCO roof step for?
The SUNUCO is a wooden step, about 8.5 cm by 31 cm and 300 g, at about £28.99. The listing names a VW California Beach and a Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo pop-top, and also describes a tablet holder. One UK text calls it a robust extra step into a pop-top. The star line is 3.8 from 6. It does not describe a striker hook, so it is the wrong tool for loading a roof box from outside the van.
What should I do if a roof step marks the car or a gear opens?
Unhook the step before you close the door. Rubber pads and moulding strips are the listed defence, and they can fail. One Eidoct review says the rubber foot fell off and the door then marked the car, and another reports a crease dent. In the shared WODHMIEY reviews, a gear opened while someone was standing on the step, and one unit broke on the second use. Stop if a gear opens underfoot. A door that no longer latches, or a creased panel, needs a body shop, not another hook.

Our verdict

In this set of ten amazon.co.uk listings, the top pick and the best value are the same product: the Eidoct folding latch door step at about £6.66, with 4.3 from 69 reviews. UK reviewers reach a roof box, bars, and a kayak when the striker sticks out. The tread is one foot, a VW Golf catch sat too high, and one review reports a crease dent. The 400 lb line is the listing’s claim. The second Eidoct ASIN is the same model number at a higher price, with a rubber foot that came off in one review. Choose the silver WODHMIEY only if a sloping striker needs the seven-angle claim, and test the gears first. The SUNUCO is for a pop-top bed, not for a roof box.
