How to use a car door step

Updated: October 2026

The hook is in your hand. How to use a car door step is a short sequence: open the door, seat the hook on the U-shaped striker, test it with a little weight, keep a hand on the car, then take it off before you close the door. Fit checks are on the [car door step buying guide](/hub/workshop/roof-steps/sub/roof-steps-buying-guide). The pick is on the main [Roof steps](/hub/workshop/roof-steps) table. Hook it on the striker, not inside the door

Open the door and find the U-shaped striker, the pin the latch closes onto. The hook goes over that pin, not into the latch and not on the glass. Ancestral Outdoors describes the same opening: door open, hook on the pin, then step. If the step has angles, set one, then step up gently. If the packet includes moulding strips, fit them before the metal meets the door. The SHYSBV bullets say to do that so the step does not scratch the car. On the £6.66 Eidoct, you want a fold that sits over the pin without rocking in your hand. On the seven-angle WODHMIEY, set a position so the tread is nearer level, then look at the gears before any weight goes on. The listing claims seven angles. It does not claim they lock themselves. Use the door that reaches the box, if you can get a foot onto that tread. A UK review of an Eidoct on a VW Golf fitted the hook, and the catch was still too high to use. If you cannot place a foot on the tread while the hook is seated, stop.

Test, then stand

With the hook seated, put a little weight on the tread while both hands can still catch the car. You are feeling for a shift, a twist, or a gear that clicks open. A wobble you can correct by reseating the hook is a reset. A wobble that remains is a reason to get down. When it feels seated, step up and keep a hand on the roof rail, the box, or the door frame. Reviews of the cheap Eidoct describe a one-foot plate. The wider WODHMIEY is one foot, or both at a push. INDG413 says to use the steps that are provided and not to jump down. Come down onto the ground before you let go. A printed 400 lb or 550 lb stays a seller claim. Strapping the box is the roof box access step page.

Stop if it moves

Take the step off before you close the door. A hook left on the striker meets the latch as the door shuts. On the £7.55 Eidoct, a rubber foot that had already fallen off was followed by a mark from the closing door. Fold the pedal, put it away, and then shut the door. Stop if a gear opens. In the shared WODHMIEY reviews, a gear came loose while a reviewer was standing on the step, and another unit broke on the second use. Orange and black files repeat those texts: one pool of 4.1 from 89, not three warnings. A fixed hook has no gear, and it can still crease a panel. Stop if the tread sits too high after a fair seating. This hook is not a BS 8634 roof ladder and not a BS EN 131 portable ladder.

Then shut the door

Unhook, fold, and put the pedal away before the latch meets the frame. Check that the door still closes. If the tread never met your foot, stop buying another colour of the same hook.

Common questions

Which part of the door does the hook go on?
The U-shaped striker, the pin on the frame that the latch catches. Open the door and hook that pin. The latch inside the door is the wrong part, and so is the glass. If the pin is flush or covered, the step has nowhere true to sit, and the buying guide says so before you pay.
Do I close the door with the step still on?
No. Unhook it, fold it, and put it away before the door closes. A hook left on the striker is in the shut line. One UK review links a lost rubber foot and a marked door to that first use. Check that the door still latches after you have removed the step.
How do I know it is seated?
The hook sits fully over the pin and does not twist in your hand. Put a little weight on it before you commit, with your hands still able to hold the car. A slight wobble that disappears when you reseat it is a reset. A wobble that stays, or a gear that clicks open, means you get off.
What if it wobbles or the gear opens?
Get down. Reseat a fixed hook once. If it still shifts, stop. On an adjustable pedal, an opening gear is the failure in the shared WODHMIEY reviews, including a gear that moved while someone was standing on it. Do not keep loading a position that will not stay shut.
Can I stand on it with both feet?
Often, no. Cheap pegs are reviewed as a one-foot tread, and one SHYSBV text calls the foothold too small. The wider seven-angle pedal is one foot, or both at a push. If you need both feet flat and a rail, you need a ladder, not a heavier stance on this plate. Hold the rail or the box while you step, and step back down before you let go.
