Milling cutter set comparison 2026

The best milling cutter sets, compared.

Top pick: Genmitsu MRBC08 8-piece CNC bit set, 1/4 inch Best value: ASNOMY 10-piece HSS end mill set, 2-12 mm – Same top score at about £14.24, with centre cutting stated and 4.5 from 1,595 reviews. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A milling cutter set on amazon.co.uk is three tools in one search: a metric HSS end-mill pack for a milling machine, a small-shank carbide pack for a desktop, and a rail-and-stile pair for a router. A 1/4 inch collet is 6.35 mm, not 6 mm, so most of a 2–12 mm end-mill set will not go in a UK handheld router. Stars on the cheap HSS sets are about 4.4 to 4.5, and the reviews mostly support light aluminium, not the full material list. The [milling cutter set buying guide](/hub/routers/milling-cutter-set/sub/milling-cutter-set-buying-guide) names the machine and the shank before the price. In the listings for this comparison, three families share the search phrase.

The best milling cutter sets in detail

Genmitsu MRBC08 8-piece CNC bit set, 1/4 inch

Rank 1

Genmitsu MRBC08 8-piece CNC bit set, 1/4 inch

∼£94

Our view

The SainSmart Genmitsu MRBC08 is eight mixed CNC profiles on a 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) shank at £93.99. The set includes tapered bits, a ball nose, up and down spirals, a 60 degree V, a 90 degree V, an O-flute, and a 2-flute. A bullet says tungsten steel, a nano blue coating, and 60-70 HRC, while the finish attribute says TiAlN, and individual profile diameters are not listed. No storage case is named, and the printed weight is 200 g. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.8 from 8 reviews, with three texts in the capture and none marked United Kingdom. One German review says a downcut cut wood and also went through an aluminium clamp by mistake, and that inch sizes were awkward. Two of those three reviewers had not tried every profile.

Pros

  • Eight profiles, including V-bits, a ball nose, spirals, an O-flute, and a 2-flute
  • 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) shank
  • Coating claimed, with nano blue and TiAlN both printed
  • Listing names wood, MDF, acrylic, plywood, and aluminium

Cons

  • £93.99 against only 8 reviews
  • No review text marked United Kingdom
  • Profile diameters are not listed
  • Nano blue and TiAlN are both printed

Best for: A desktop CNC with a 1/4 inch collet when you want several profiles in one box.

Less suitable: A metric milling machine, or a choice that needs a large UK review sample.

Common questions

Will it fit a 6 mm collet?

No. The shank is 1/4 inch, 6.35 mm. The bullet says to match the collet.

What coating is named?

The bullets say nano blue. The finish attribute says TiAlN. Both are printed. Hardness 60-70 HRC is a bullet claim.

How many UK reviews are in the capture?

None of the three texts is marked United Kingdom. The listing score is 4.8 from 8.

AFUNTA 10-piece HSS end mill set, 2-12 mm

Rank 2

AFUNTA 10-piece HSS end mill set, 2-12 mm

∼£17

Our view

The AFUNTA AF-4-flute_end_mill_10 is ten HSS mills from 2 mm to 12 mm at £16.99, for a milling machine or CNC rather than a handheld router. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 2,455 reviews, the largest count in this comparison, and the first 50 texts are mostly from the United Kingdom. Reviewers often report a clean edge on aluminium, brass, and careful mild-steel cuts, and some say the edge holds after a light grind. The same sample includes boxes with a 2-flute and a 3-flute among mills sold as 4-flute, plus burrs, rust, and one empty box. Centre cutting is not stated, and the printed item weight is 20 g. It is the top pick on review volume, as long as you check flute count and the cutting edge before the first job.

Pros

  • 4.5 from 2,455 reviews, the largest sample here
  • Full 2 mm to 12 mm range, including 7 mm and 9 mm
  • Light cuts on aluminium, brass, and careful mild steel are praised
  • Some deliveries arrive in individual packets, and some are oiled

Cons

  • Reviews found 2-flute and 3-flute pieces in a 4-flute set
  • Edges that needed grinding, plus rust and one empty box
  • Centre cutting is not stated
  • Printed item weight is 20 g

Best for: A cheap jobbing set for light aluminium, brass, and careful mild steel, if you inspect each cutter.

Less suitable: A guaranteed four-flute centre-cutting mill straight out of the box, or a handheld router.

Common questions

Are all ten pieces four-flute?

The listing says four flutes. UK reviews include a 2-flute and a 3-flute in the same box, and a mix of plunge and non-plunge ends.

Can I plunge with them?

Centre cutting is not stated. Do not assume a plunge from the flute count.

What went wrong in reviews?

Regrinding before use, burrs, rust, quick dulling on mild steel, and one empty box. Many other reviews were satisfied with light cuts.

ASNOMY 10-piece HSS end mill set, 2-12 mm

Rank 3

ASNOMY 10-piece HSS end mill set, 2-12 mm

∼£14

Our view

The ASNOMY AS0087 is ten 4-flute HSS end mills from 2 mm to 12 mm, including 7 mm and 9 mm, for milling-machine and CNC work at £14.24. Centre cutting is stated, the HSS grade is not named, and the printed pack weight is 270 g. On amazon.co.uk the listing sits at 4.5 from 1,595 reviews, and the first 50 are mostly from the United Kingdom. Those reviews mostly describe a usable finish on aluminium, nylon, plastics, and the flat bottom of a drilled hole. A UK review says the set would not cut cast iron, and a non-UK review found steel blunted quickly while plastic and aluminium stayed acceptable. The bullets do not list a case, one review says these are not slot drills, and at this price with that review sample it is the best value here if you stay on aluminium and look at the edge before a harder metal.

Pros

  • Ten sizes from 2 mm to 12 mm, including 7 mm and 9 mm
  • Centre cutting stated on the listing
  • 4.5 from 1,595 reviews, mostly describing aluminium
  • £14.24 for the ten-piece pack
  • Reviewers mention individual cases and size labels

Cons

  • HSS grade is not named
  • Cast iron and steel drew failures in reviews
  • Described as end mills, not slot drills
  • A storage case is not in the bullets

Best for: Light aluminium, nylon, and plastics on a milling machine or CNC, when you want a cheap 2 mm to 12 mm range.

Less suitable: Cast iron, titanium, a slot drill, or a handheld router.

Common questions

Does the listing say these are centre cutting?

Yes. The listing attribute is End cut type Center. One UK review still says they are end mills, not slot drills.

What did UK reviews cut?

Most of the first 50 reviews praise aluminium and light hobby cuts. Cast iron and steel drew failures in a minority of reviews.

Is a case included?

The bullets do not list a case. Reviewers describe individual cases and labels.

HSEAMALL 10-piece HSS end mill set with case

Rank 4

HSEAMALL 10-piece HSS end mill set with case

∼£16

Our view

The HSEAMALL SUP80 is ten HSS 4-flute mills from 2 mm to 12 mm, supplied with a blue plastic case, at £15.99. The listing calls the tip a square end, prints a 35 mm cutting-length attribute and a 0.2 mm corner radius, and does not state centre cutting. The HSS grade is not named, and the pack weight is printed as 200 g. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 9 reviews, and the capture has four texts, two from the United Kingdom and two from Germany. One UK review says the large size clogged on a deeper cut, while a German review reports work on mild steel and other soft metals. Nine reviews are too few to treat that steel result as typical.

Pros

  • Blue plastic storage case stated in the bullets
  • Ten pieces from 2 mm to 12 mm
  • Square end stated, with a 0.2 mm corner radius on the listing
  • 4.5 from 9 reviews, including one report of mild steel

Cons

  • Only 9 reviews, and only four texts
  • One UK review reports clogging on a deeper cut with a larger cutter
  • Centre cutting is not stated
  • HSS grade is not named

Best for: A cased 2 mm to 12 mm HSS set when a sample of nine reviews is enough for you.

Less suitable: A four-flute mill you want to trust in steel on the back of hundreds of UK reviews.

Common questions

Is a case included?

Yes. The bullets and the included-components line name a storage case.

Can I drill with them?

A bullet says milling, drilling, and cutting. Centre cutting is not stated, so a plunge is not confirmed.

What did reviews say?

Four texts. One UK review says the large size clogged in deeper stock. A German review says mild steel and soft metals were fine.

Oudtinz 8-piece end mill set, 2-12 mm

Rank 5

Oudtinz 8-piece end mill set, 2-12 mm

∼£17

Our view

The Oudtinz set is eight 4-flute mills at £16.99, in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 mm, so 7 mm and 9 mm are not included. Centre cutting is stated, the printed weight is 200 g, and a single cutting-length attribute reads 8 mm. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 921 reviews. Of the first 50 texts, ten are marked United Kingdom, and buyers describe light cuts in mild steel, aluminium, and brass. The title says high-speed steel while a bullet says tungsten steel, and the printed inch table does not equal the millimetre sizes. Reviews also mention dulling or a chip after one steel cut, rust on the tips, and metric cutters in packaging that suggested imperial sizes.

Pros

  • Centre cutting stated
  • 4.4 from 921 reviews
  • Light cuts on aluminium, brass, and mild steel reported
  • Eight metric diameters up to 12 mm

Cons

  • Listing says both HSS and tungsten steel
  • Inch table does not match the millimetre sizes
  • Skips 7 mm and 9 mm
  • Steel dulling, rust, and one report that larger mills were not centre cutting

Best for: Eight metric sizes for light non-ferrous work, if you measure the cutters and ignore the inch table.

Less suitable: A known carbide grade, true inch shanks, or the missing 7 mm and 9 mm sizes.

Common questions

Is it HSS or tungsten?

Both appear on the listing. The title and material line say high-speed steel. A bullet says ultra-fine tungsten steel. The listing does not resolve it.

Are the inch sizes right?

No. The bullet sets 1/16 inch equal to 2 mm and 1/2 inch equal to 12 mm. Reviews say the cutters are metric.

Do reviews support steel?

Some UK reviews say mild steel, aluminium, and brass were fine if the cut was light. Other reviews say the edge died on the first steel cut.

Hozly 5-pack 1/8 inch downcut O-flute, carbide

Rank 6

Hozly 5-pack 1/8 inch downcut O-flute, carbide

∼£17

Our view

The Hozly DRZXQ3*22 is five identical solid-carbide downcut O-flute bits, all on a 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) shank, at £16.99. Cutting length is 22 mm. Overall length is 38 mm in one line and 45 mm in the size name, and the printed weight is 40 g. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 251 reviews. Reviewers describe a clean top edge on ply, MDF, poplar, and acrylic, including on a small 3018-style CNC, and they treat the five bits as spares when one snaps. A UK review on maple reports packed chips and smoke, and other texts describe snaps when the feed, the step, or a leftover plug catches the tool. Only three of the first 50 reviews are marked United Kingdom.

Pros

  • Solid carbide, downcut, single O-flute
  • 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) shank for a small CNC collet
  • Clean top edge reported on ply, MDF, poplar, and acrylic
  • Five identical bits kept as spares
  • 4.4 from 251 reviews

Cons

  • One diameter only, not a mixed set
  • Length lines conflict: 38 mm and 45 mm
  • Breakage, packed chips, and a diameter dispute in reviews
  • Only three of the first 50 reviews are marked United Kingdom

Best for: Backup downcuts for a 3.175 mm CNC collet on sheet goods and plastics.

Less suitable: Several diameters, a milling-machine end mill, or hardwood slots where chips must clear.

Common questions

Is this a mixed milling cutter set?

No. It is five copies of one 1/8 inch downcut. You get spares, not a size range.

What shank does it need?

1/8 inch, 3.175 mm. It does not fit a 6 mm or 1/4 inch collet.

Why do reviews mention smoke and snaps?

The bullet says a downcut packs chips and that you should slow the feed. A UK review saw smoke in maple. Other reviews report easy breakage.

QWORK 10-piece HSS4241 end mill set, 2-12 mm

Rank 7

QWORK 10-piece HSS4241 end mill set, 2-12 mm

∼£14

Our view

The QWORK WD45769 lists ten 4-flute end mills in named HSS4241, from 2 mm to 12 mm, at £13.99. That is the lowest price in this comparison, and the printed weight is 215 g. The bullets describe a straight shank for profiling, shoulder milling, and finishing, and they name wood, aluminium, and steel. The end is given as flat, centre cutting is not stated, and no storage case is listed. The amazon.co.uk capture has no customer-review line and no review texts, so there is no star rating for edge life or for whether the flutes match the listing. You are buying the grade name and the size list, then checking the cutters yourself.

Pros

  • Grade named as HSS4241
  • Ten metric sizes from 2 mm to 12 mm
  • £13.99, the lowest price in this comparison
  • Straight shank and four flutes stated

Cons

  • No customer reviews on the listing
  • Centre cutting is not stated
  • No storage case in the bullets

Best for: A listing that names HSS4241, if you will inspect the mills before use.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants review evidence, a stated centre cut, or a handheld router bit.

Socoje 2-piece rail and stile set, 1/2 inch

Rank 8

Socoje 2-piece rail and stile set, 1/2 inch

∼£22

Our view

The Socoje Router Bits Sets-002 is two rail and stile cutters with a 1/2 inch shank, at £21.99, for door and window frames on a router. The listing states 45# carbon steel, one flute, a round-over cut, and an enclosed lubricated bearing. A heat-resistant coating is claimed, with no coating name, and the printed weight is 360 g. Cutting diameter and maximum speed are not stated, and no case is listed. The amazon.co.uk capture has no customer-review line and no review texts, so there is no report of how the edge behaves in hardwood. This is a woodworking pair for a 1/2 inch collet, not an HSS or carbide end mill for metal.

Pros

  • Matched rail and stile pair for door and window frames
  • 1/2 inch shank
  • Enclosed lubricated bearing claimed
  • Round-over cut stated

Cons

  • 45# carbon steel, not HSS or carbide
  • No customer reviews on the listing
  • No cutting diameter or maximum speed stated
  • No case stated

Best for: Wooden door or window frames on a router that has a 1/2 inch collet.

Less suitable: Metal milling, or a router that only takes a 1/4 inch collet.

How we compared

Eight milling cutter sets are on this page. Scores use the amazon.co.uk listing fields and the review lines already captured for each ASIN. There is no laboratory test. Review evidence is 45 points, and a large sample outweighs a high star line on a handful of reviews. Listing clarity and fitness for the stated machine are 25 points. Repeated review complaints are 20 points, taken off when they appear in the same sample. Price against the pack is 10 points. A low price with no reviews does not collect that. A listing with no customer-review line scores 0. Under 10 reviews, the star line can stay high and the score stays off both badges.

Milling cutter set buying guide

Name the machine before you compare stars. A metric HSS end-mill pack, a small-shank CNC bit, and a rail-and-stile pair are different purchases. Prices on this page are amazon.co.uk listings, from about £13.99 to about £93.99.

What is a milling cutter set?

A milling cutter set on amazon.co.uk is not one tool. In the listings for this comparison, three families share the search phrase. The first is a metric high-speed-steel end-mill pack for a milling machine or a mill-drill. QWORK, ASNOMY, HSEAMALL, AFUNTA, and Oudtinz are that family, from about £13.99 to £16.99. The second is a small-shank carbide or coated bit pack for a desktop CNC. Hozly is five identical 3.175 mm solid-carbide downcuts at about £16.99.

Best for

  • A small mill cutting aluminium, if you inspect the edge
  • A desktop CNC on MDF, ply, or acrylic with a matching shank
  • Door frames on a router that already has a 1/2 inch collet

Not ideal for

  • A 2–12 mm end-mill set in a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch router collet
  • A plunge when centre cutting is not stated
  • Staff on an unassessed machine, or joinery that is fire-resisting

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

A metric set in a router collet

A 1/4 inch collet is 6.35 mm, not 6 mm, and 12 mm is not 1/2 inch. Most of a 2–12 mm end-mill set will not go in a UK handheld router. Router bits are not end mills.

  2. 2

Plunging because the mill has four flutes

Four flutes do not prove centre cutting. ASNOMY states Center. AFUNTA, QWORK, and HSEAMALL do not. If the set cannot plunge, add a slot drill.

  3. 3

Reading the bullet material list as a test

Reviews on the cheap HSS sets mostly describe light aluminium. Oudtinz prints both HSS and tungsten steel. Only QWORK names HSS4241, and that listing has no reviews. Do not call the others M2.

What to weigh up

Match the machine and the shank

High

Name the machine before you compare stars. A mill, a mill-drill, a desktop CNC, and a handheld or table router do not take the same cutter. The shank has to match the collet. Common UK router collets are 1/4 inch, which is 6.35 mm, and 1/2 inch, which is 12.7 mm. Desktop CNCs in this comparison use 3.175 mm or 1/4 inch. Metric end mills step with the cutting diameter, and several listings do not state the shank for each size. A 2–12 mm HSS set is for a milling machine.

Material, centre cutting, and the review sample

High

Read the material line against the reviews. The cheap HSS sets print long material lists. The reviews mostly support light cuts in aluminium, and sometimes brass, nylon, plastics, or careful mild steel. They do not confirm stainless, titanium, or cast iron. Only QWORK names a grade, HSS4241, and that listing has no review line, so the grade name is not evidence of edge life. Do not call the other sets M2. Oudtinz prints high-speed steel in the title and tungsten steel in a bullet.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Small milling machines

You mill aluminium and light steel on a mill or mill-drill, and you can inspect each cutter. AFUNTA is the top pick on review volume, at about £16.99 with 4.5 from 2,455 reviews. Centre cutting is not stated, so add a slot drill if you need to plunge. A 2–12 mm set does not fit a handheld router.

Desktop CNC sheet goods

You cut MDF, ply, or acrylic and the collet is 3.175 mm. Hozly is five identical solid-carbide downcuts at about £16.99, with 4.4 from 251 reviews. Slow the feed so chips do not pack. It is not a mixed diameter set, and it does not fit a 6 mm or 1/4 inch collet.

Door frames on a router

You want a rail-and-stile pair for wooden door or window frames, and the router has a 1/2 inch collet. Socoje is two carbon-steel cutters at about £21.99. The listing has no review line. Ignore the end-mill star ratings. It will not fit a 1/4 inch-only router, and it is not a metal mill.

Common questions about milling cutter sets

Which milling cutter set is the top pick in 2026?
AFUNTA’s ten-piece HSS set, about £16.99, is the top pick. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 2,455 reviews, the largest sample here, and the score ties ASNOMY at 90. The larger sample wins among listings with at least 100 reviews. Reviewers often report a clean edge on aluminium, brass, and careful mild steel. The same sample includes 2-flute and 3-flute pieces sold as 4-flute, plus rust and one empty box. Centre cutting is not stated. Check each cutter before the first job. This is a listing comparison, not a laboratory test.
Which milling cutter set is the best value?
ASNOMY’s ten-piece HSS set is the best value at about £14.24. It has the same score, 90, as the top pick, centre cutting is stated, and amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 1,595 reviews. Those reviews mostly describe aluminium, nylon, and plastics. Cast iron and steel drew failures in a minority of reviews. QWORK is cheaper at about £13.99 and names HSS4241, but the capture has no review line, so it scores 0 and is not the best value. The HSS grade on ASNOMY is not named.
Will a 2–12 mm end-mill set fit a router?
No. A 1/4 inch collet is 6.35 mm, not 6 mm, and a 1/2 inch collet is 12.7 mm, not 12 mm. Most of a metric 2–12 mm end-mill set will not go in a UK handheld router. Trend’s routing FAQ is the source for 6.35 mm versus 6 mm. Match the shank to the collet on the machine you own. Desktop CNCs in this comparison use 3.175 mm or 1/4 inch. See router collet sizes before you treat a millimetre size as close enough.
Should I buy HSS or carbide?
Buy HSS metric end mills for a small milling machine and light aluminium. Buy carbide when the spindle is a desktop CNC cutting MDF, ply, or acrylic, on a 3.175 mm or 1/4 inch shank. Hozly is five identical solid-carbide downcuts at about £16.99, 4.4 from 251 reviews. Genmitsu is eight mixed 1/4 inch profiles at about £93.99, 4.8 from only 8 reviews. They are not substitutes for a rail-and-stile pair. Slow a downcut so chips do not pack.
Can I plunge with a four-flute end mill?
Only if centre cutting is stated. Four flutes do not prove a plunge. ASNOMY’s listing says Center. AFUNTA, QWORK, and HSEAMALL do not state centre cutting. One ASNOMY review still says the cutters are end mills, not slot drills. If the set cannot plunge, add a slot drill. Clarke’s ET163, about £88.79 including VAT at Machine Mart, pairs slot drills with end mills. That set is context only. It is not one of the ASINs on this page.
What did the HSS reviews actually cut?
Stars on the cheap HSS sets are about 4.4 to 4.5. The reviews mostly support light cuts in aluminium, brass, nylon, and plastics, not stainless, titanium, or cast iron. Oudtinz, 4.4 from 921 reviews, has UK notes of light mild steel and other notes that the edge died on the first steel cut. Only QWORK names a grade, HSS4241. Do not assume the other HSS sets are M2.
How much does a milling cutter set cost?
In this comparison, HSS packs are about £13.99 to £16.99, and five identical carbide CNC bits are about £16.99. The rail-and-stile pair is about £21.99. The coated 1/4 inch mixed CNC set is about £93.99. Outside these listings, as context only, a Warco 11-piece HSS set was about £45, an Anchor five-piece 10–16 mm set was £49.99, and Clarke’s 20-piece ET163 was £88.79 including VAT. Those are not the ASINs compared here. Prices are amazon.co.uk listing prices, not a market survey.
When is the rail-and-stile pair the right buy?
Buy it for wooden door or window frames on a router with a 1/2 inch collet. Socoje is two cutters at about £21.99, stated as 45# carbon steel with one flute, a round-over, and an enclosed bearing. It is not an end mill, and the capture has no review line. It will not fit a 1/4 inch-only collet. A table-mounted router is a different purchase: see the router table comparison. Call a professional if the joinery is fire-resisting or the work cannot be clamped.

Our verdict

Eight listings do not share one spindle. AFUNTA, ten HSS mills from 2 mm to 12 mm at about £16.99, is the top pick: 4.5 from 2,455 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest sample among listings with at least 100 reviews, tied on score with ASNOMY. You still have to check flute count, because the same sample includes 2-flute and 3-flute pieces, and centre cutting is not stated. ASNOMY, about £14.24, is the best value: centre cutting is stated, the score is the same 90, and 1,595 reviews mostly describe aluminium. QWORK is cheaper and names HSS4241, but it has no review line, so it is not the best value. The carbide packs and the rail-and-stile pair stay separate purchases.
