An engine stand holds a car or motorcycle engine off the vehicle so you can bolt to the block, turn the unit and roll it on a firm floor. It does not lift the engine out of the bay. An engine crane does that, and an engine leveller only balances the load while it hangs. If the engine is still in the car, look at an [engine support bar](/hub/lifting-equipment/engine-support-bar) or a rated crane before you buy a stand. On amazon.co.uk the usual home-garage tool is a steel rotating stand with a locking head and castors, in stated steps around 350 kg, 450 kg and 900 kg. Keep one capacity figure that the title, the bullet and the plate share. The checks, in order, are the type, then one capacity in kilograms, then the head and the wheels. A non-rotating cradle, a strap cart and a motorcycle bench stand are different purchases. This page does not adopt either figure as the single rating. Do not read that pound line as a 450 kg car stand.

The best engine stands in detail

YOLANDO Chevy engine cradle MY100

Rank 1

YOLANDO Chevy engine cradle MY100

∼£55

Our view

The YOLANDO MY100 is a rolling Chevy cradle at about £55.21, with 4.7 from 57 amazon.co.uk ratings and a bullet that states 750 lb. The listing is for small-block and big-block Chevy engines, and it says the cradle is not compatible with GM LS. The specification table does not give a kilogram rating, and it does not describe a rotating head, so this frame does not index a block through a locked angle. Assembly uses the included hardware and basic tools; the listing does not call the job tool-free. Three-inch swivel castors are stated, and brakes are not. The item weight is 7.8 kg, which is the cradle. In this set it is a move-and-store tool for those Chevy families.

Pros

  • 4.7 from 57 amazon.co.uk ratings, at about £55.21
  • The listing names Chevy small-block and big-block and excludes GM LS
  • One stated load, 750 lb, rather than two figures
  • 3 inch swivel castors, with hardware and instructions included

Cons

  • No rotating head is stated, so the engine does not index on a lock
  • A kilogram capacity is not in the specification table
  • Brakes are not stated

Best for: You are moving or storing a Chevy small-block or big-block and you do not need to turn the engine.

Less suitable: You have a GM LS engine, or you need a locking head for a rebuild on the bench.

Common questions

Will this cradle fit a GM LS engine?

No. The listing says it is not compatible with GM LS engines.

What load does the listing state?

A bullet states up to 750 lb. A kilogram figure is not in the specification table.

What tools does assembly need?

The listing says all hardware and instructions are included and that setup uses basic tools. It does not say the assembly is tool-free.

Performance Tool W41037 strap engine stand

Rank 2

Performance Tool W41037 strap engine stand

∼£162

Our view

The Performance Tool W41037 is a strap rolling stand at about £161.88, the highest price in this set, with 4.6 from 73 amazon.co.uk ratings. The title states 750 lb and the specification states 340.19 kg, so those two lines describe one load. Adjustable width and depth and cam-buckle straps are included, the specification says assembly is not required, and the castors are 3 inches. A rotating head is not described. The item weight is 5.28 kg, which is the stand, not the engine. The model field prints W54152 against part W41037. Review text behind that star line is not treated here as United Kingdom ownership. It is a rolling strap cart for an engine that is already out.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 73 amazon.co.uk ratings
  • The 750 lb title and the 340.19 kg specification describe the same load
  • Cam-buckle straps, adjustable width and depth, and assembly not required on the specification
  • 3-inch castors

Cons

  • No rotating head is described
  • About £161.88 is the highest price among the seven listings
  • The model field prints W54152 against part number W41037
  • At 5.28 kg this is a strap cart, not a four-arm workshop stand

Best for: You want a strap cart to roll an engine that is already out, and you do not need to turn it on a locked head.

Less suitable: You are rebuilding on the bench and you need adjustable arms and a locking head.

The title states 750 lb. The specification field states 340.19 kg. Those two lines describe the same load.

Does it include straps?

Yes. The bullets say adjustable cam-buckle straps are included.

Does the listing describe a rotating head?

No. It describes a rolling stand with adjustable width and depth and straps.

DETYI motorcycle engine stand E7120

Rank 3

DETYI motorcycle engine stand E7120

∼£57

Our view

The DETYI E7120 is a motorcycle bench stand at about £56.86, with 4.2 from 34 amazon.co.uk ratings and an item weight of 4.2 kg. The title states 1,000 lb, and the specification table does not give kilograms, so that pound line is not a plate you can set beside a 450 kg car stand. The fitment bullet names 50 cc to 500 cc single-cylinder engines, motorcycle engines, ATV engines, and inline 2, 3 and 4 cylinder engines, while the title also says car and engine repair. A 360 degree rotation is in the title, and a lock count is not. A question on the page asks whether it has wheels, and the bullets do not answer it. The package is about 36 × 32 × 10 cm. Keep it for the small engines the bullet names.

Pros

  • Adjustable length and height for the small-engine fitment in the bullet
  • 4.2 from 34 amazon.co.uk ratings, at about £56.86
  • The title states 360 degree rotation
  • Instructions and hardware, with no complicated tools stated

Cons

  • The item weighs 4.2 kg against a 1,000 lb title, and no kilogram plate is stated
  • The listing does not say whether it has wheels
  • The title’s car-repair wording is wider than the fitment bullet

Best for: You are supporting a small motorcycle, ATV or inline engine that matches the fitment bullet.

Less suitable: You need a car-engine stand, or you are reading 1,000 lb as a 450 kg workshop rating.

Which engines does the fitment bullet name?

50 cc to 500 cc single-cylinder engines, motorcycle engines, ATV engines, and inline 2, 3 and 4 cylinder engines. The title also says car and engine repair.

Does the listing say it has wheels?

A question on the page asks whether it has wheels. The bullets and the specification table do not answer it.

Sealey ES350 engine stand, 350 kg

Rank 4

Sealey ES350 engine stand, 350 kg

∼£104

Our view

The Sealey ES350 is listed at about £103.90, and the title and the size field both state 350 kg. The item weight on the listing is 16.3 kg, the colour is red, and the dimensions line prints 18 × 88 × 21 cm. amazon.co.uk shows 4.0 from 5 ratings. Two UK reviews in the extract talk about arrival condition: one says it does the job but looked used, with marked wheels and missing paint, and the other says the paint was chipped, the engine-holding part was twisted, and burrs were painted over. This amazon.co.uk extract does not describe the head, the arm count or a fold. Sealey’s ES350.V3 instructions still set a 350 kg limit, a 360 degree head and a 700 mm maximum load length. Take it when you want that plate and you will return a twisted head. Leave it when the dressed engine is not clearly under 350 kg.

Pros

  • The title and the size field both state 350 kg
  • Named Sealey model ES350, with an item weight of 16.3 kg
  • The maker’s instructions state a 360 degree head and a 700 mm maximum load length
  • 4.0 from 5 amazon.co.uk ratings

Cons

  • Both UK reviews in the extract describe chipped or missing paint, and one describes a twisted holding part
  • Head, arm count and fold are not in this amazon.co.uk extract
  • Five ratings, at about £103.90, against a 450 kg AB Tools listing with no reviews

Best for: You want the Sealey ES350’s 350 kg plate and you will check the head and the paint before the engine is bolted on.

Less suitable: The dressed engine is not clearly under 350 kg, or you want a longer UK review record than five ratings.

Two UK reviews are in the extract. One says it does the job but looked used, with marked wheels and missing paint. The other says paint was chipped, the engine-holding part was twisted, and burrs were painted over.

Does this extract describe the rotating head?

No. The bullets only say Sealey tools and equipment. Head, arm count and fold are not in this extract. The maker’s ES350.V3 sheet still states a 360 degree head.

T-Mech folding engine stand, 900 kg

Rank 5

T-Mech folding engine stand, 900 kg

∼£150

Our view

The T-Mech 210914F3 is the most fully specified rotating stand in this set. The title and a bullet state 900 kg / 2,000 lb, the specification field prints that load as 9E+2 kg, and the amazon.co.uk price is about £149.99. It lists a 360 degree head with eight positions at 45 degrees, four adjustable arms, six castors, two rear brakes, legs that fold inwards, and a work height of 810 mm. amazon.co.uk shows 3.8 from 11 ratings. Of the three UK reviews in the extract, one calls the support sturdy, one reports excessive play in the head, and one says it arrived damaged, with poor welds, and that a refund was denied. Assembly is required, and the frame is painted alloy steel in orange. The 900 kg line does not cancel those notes, so the pin and the welds need a look before an engine goes on. On the score used here it is the top pick because the load, the locks, the wheels and the brakes are stated together.

Pros

  • Title and bullet state 900 kg, with eight lock positions at 45 degrees
  • Six castors and two rear brakes
  • Legs fold inwards, and the work height is listed at 810 mm
  • Four adjustable arms on a rotating engine and gearbox stand

Cons

  • 3.8 from 11 amazon.co.uk ratings, including a report of excessive head play
  • One UK review says it arrived damaged, with poor welds, and that a refund was denied
  • About £149.99, and the specification field is written as 9E+2 kg

Best for: You want a folding rotating stand with a stated 900 kg load, eight locks and brakes, and you will inspect the head and the welds on arrival.

Less suitable: You need a long UK review record, or the dressed engine already fits a 450 kg plate and you would rather not pay about £149.99.

Does this stand fold?

Yes. The listing says the legs fold inwards for storage or transport.

AB Tools rotating engine stand, 450 kg

Rank 6

AB Tools rotating engine stand, 450 kg

∼£80

Our view

The AB Tools AV471, at about £79.75, states a single load of 450 kg and six locking positions at 45 degree increments. That is the clearest mid-range rotating specification among the seven listings. The page says the fit is fully adjustable and universal, and it does not state an arm count, so universal is a listing phrase rather than a bolt pattern you can check on the block. It says you can manoeuvre the stand around the workshop, and it does not give a wheel count or a brake. amazon.co.uk shows no star line and no reviews in this extract, which is the limit at this price. The colour is green, the warranty line is 12 months, and item weight and dimensions are absent from the table. For a home petrol rebuild that sits under one honest 450 kg figure, it is the best value rotating stand here if you can buy without an owner sample.

Pros

  • One stated load of 450 kg, rather than two conflicting figures
  • Six locking positions at 45 degree increments
  • About £79.75, below the Sealey ES350 and the T-Mech prices in this set
  • A 12 month warranty line on the listing

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk star line or reviews in this extract
  • Wheel count, brakes, fold and arm count are not stated
  • Item weight and dimensions are missing from the specification table

Best for: You want a rotating workshop stand with one 450 kg figure and six locks, at about £79.75, and you accept a listing with no review sample.

Less suitable: You need brakes, a folding frame, or UK owner comments before you mount an engine.

Six locking positions, set at 45 degree increments.

Does the listing state how many wheels it has?

No. It says you can manoeuvre the stand around the workshop, and it does not give a wheel count or a brake.

Garvee rotating engine stand

Rank 7

Garvee rotating engine stand

∼£57

Our view

The Garvee listing at about £56.99 is a folding rotating stand with four adjustable arms and 3.6 cm hex bolts, and this amazon.co.uk extract has no star line and no reviews. The title states 340 kg and a four-castor base. A bullet states 680 kg and 1,500 lb, and five swivel castors with lockable central wheels. Those are two loads and two castor counts, so this comparison does not adopt the higher figure. The frame is listed as Q235 alloy steel in red, the item weight is 19.4 kg, the size is 85 × 75 × 90 cm, and a bullet says the frame folds with tool-free assembly. The head is described as 360 degrees, and the lock count is not stated. Until the page settles on one load and one castor count, there is no single plate to match to a dressed engine.

Pros

  • A folding frame, with tool-free assembly stated
  • Four adjustable arms on a stand listed at 19.4 kg
  • About £56.99 if a later listing settles on one load that covers your engine

Cons

  • The title states 340 kg and a bullet states 680 kg and 1,500 lb
  • The title says four castors and a bullet says five
  • No amazon.co.uk reviews in this extract, and no lock count

Best for: You already know which of the two load lines and which castor count is on the plate in the box, and that single figure covers the engine.

Less suitable: You need one stated kilogram figure before you buy, or you need UK owner comments on this listing.

How we compared

Scores use the seven amazon.co.uk listings kept here, with shelf prices, stars and review notes read on 19 October 2026 and scored on 20 October 2026. No lab test and no workshop weigh-in. A high score is a listing that states one job, one load and a head you can lock. It is not a measured safety rating. The five parts below sum to 100. Deductions sit outside that total: a further cut applies for UK reviews that describe a twisted head, head play or arrival damage, for a 1,000 lb title on a 4.2 kg bench stand, and for a model field that does not match the part number. The highest score is the top pick. Best value is the £79.75 stand with one 450 kg figure and six locks, and it is a different product.

1

Type fit

25%

A rotating car or gearbox stand scores higher than a Chevy cradle, a strap cart or a motorcycle bench stand. Pick the type for the job before the brand.

2

One capacity figure

20%

Title, bullet and specification should agree on one load. A split rating stays low. A pound title with no kilogram line scores below a single kilogram plate. If the lines disagree, the higher number is not adopted.

3

Head, wheels and brakes

15%

Stated lock positions, castors and brakes score here. A missing wheel count costs points. A head that locks without play is part of the buying check, not a lab measurement.

4

Amazon stars and sample

25%

The amazon.co.uk star line is scaled, then the review count is added. A listing with no star line scores 0 on this part. US and Canadian review text on a UK page is not treated as UK owner evidence.

5

15%

The shelf price in GBP is judged against the type of stand, not against the biggest number printed in a title. Prices are the 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk figures.

Engine stand buying guide

Choose the type of stand for the job, then keep one capacity figure that the title, the bullet and the plate all share. A crane still has to lift the engine out. A stand does not do that.

What to check before you buy an engine stand

An engine stand holds the engine, and often the gearbox, after it is out of the vehicle. You bolt to the block, lock the head, turn the unit and roll it on a firm floor. It does not pull the engine out of the bay. An engine crane does that job, and an engine leveller only balances the load while it hangs. The checks, in order, are the type, then one capacity in kilograms, then the head and the wheels.

Best for

  • A home mechanic rebuilding one petrol engine on a concrete floor, with a separate crane to lift it out
  • A workshop that will inspect the stand under PUWER and wants one stated kilogram plate

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who still has the engine in the car and has no rated crane and slings
  • A motorcycle owner who is reading a 1,000 lb bench-stand title as a car rating

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Keeping the higher of two ratings

Garvee states 340 kg and four castors in the title, and 680 kg and five castors in a bullet. This comparison does not adopt the higher load or either castor count as settled.

  2. 2

Reading a bike stand as a car stand

DETYI’s title states 1,000 lb on a stand that weighs 4.2 kg. The fitment bullet names small bike, ATV and inline engines. That pound line is not a 450 kg workshop plate.

  3. 3

Standing under the engine or rolling it backwards

Sealey’s ES350 sheet says lock the plate, push from behind the post, do not pull a loaded stand backwards, and do not work underneath. A twisted head or painted-over burrs are a return.

What to weigh up

One capacity figure

High

The title, the bullet and the plate should name the same load in kilograms. Sealey ES350 states 350 kg in the title and the size field. AB Tools states 450 kg. T-Mech states 900 kg / 2,000 lb, and the specification field prints 9E+2 kg. Performance Tool’s 750 lb title matches 340.19 kg in the specification. YOLANDO states 750 lb and does not print kilograms. DETYI states 1,000 lb and does not print kilograms. Garvee states 340 kg and 680 kg.

Head, wheels and floor

High

A rebuild stand needs adjustable arms and a pin or screw that locks the angle, unless you only need a cradle for storage. AB Tools lists six locks at 45 degrees. T-Mech lists eight locks, six castors and two rear brakes, and the legs fold inwards. Sealey’s instructions say the ES350 head swivels 360 degrees and the maximum load length is 700 mm, and that you push from behind the post rather than pull a loaded stand backwards. Brakes matter if you must park on a slight imperfection.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Home mechanic

You are rebuilding one petrol engine on a concrete floor, and you already have a separate crane. The AB Tools stand states one 450 kg figure and six locks at about £79.75. It has no amazon.co.uk review sample in this extract, and it does not state brakes or a wheel count.

Workshop user

You want the fullest stated rotating specification in this set: 900 kg, eight locks, six castors and two brakes. The T-Mech stand is that listing, at about £149.99. Where employees use it, HSE treats an engine stand as equipment to inspect under PUWER. UK reviews here still report head play and arrival damage.

Motorcycle owner

You need a bench stand for a small bike, ATV or inline engine, not a car stand. The DETYI E7120 weighs 4.2 kg and the fitment bullet names 50 cc to 500 cc singles and inline engines. Do not read the 1,000 lb title as a 450 kg workshop rating.

Common questions about engine stands

Which engine stand is the top pick?
The top pick is the T-Mech engine stand (B0CTTVYVBP) at about £149.99. It scores 83 because the title and a bullet state 900 kg, with eight locks, six castors, two rear brakes and folding legs. amazon.co.uk shows 3.8 from 11 ratings. One UK review reports play in the head, and another says it arrived damaged with poor welds. Inspect the pin and the welds on arrival. The 900 kg line is a stated plate, not a lab test.
Which engine stand is best value?
Best value is the AB Tools rotating engine stand (B0GK29YC9Z) at about £79.75, score 69. It states one load of 450 kg and six locks at 45 degree increments. amazon.co.uk shows no star line and no reviews in this extract. Wheel count, brakes, fold and arm count are not stated. It fits a home petrol rebuild under that 450 kg figure if you can buy without an owner sample. It is a different product from the T-Mech top pick.
Does an engine stand remove the engine from the car?
No. An engine stand holds the engine after it is out, so you can turn it and roll it. An engine crane lifts it from the bay. An engine leveller only balances the load while it hangs. The crane must straddle the stand, and a stand cannot extract an engine. How those tools split is set out in engine stand vs engine crane. If the engine is still in the car and you have no rated crane and slings, stop or use a workshop.
How much weight should an engine stand be rated for?
Use one kilogram figure that the title, the bullet and the plate share. If they disagree, do not keep the higher number. Sealey states 350 kg, AB Tools 450 kg and T-Mech 900 kg. Garvee states 340 kg in the title and 680 kg in a bullet, so neither figure is settled. As a rule of thumb, forum posts put a Land Rover TDV6 near 202–205 kg dry. Dressed engines are heavier, and a 350 kg plate does not cover every large diesel or dressed big-block.
Do home garages need a LOLER certificate for an engine stand?
A private home garage is not the employer duty that LOLER places on lifting equipment at work. HSE’s page on working under vehicles puts an engine hoist on a 12-month thorough examination and slings on 6 months. That does not turn a stand in a private garage into a 12-month certificate. In motor-vehicle repair, HSE OC 803/69 names engine stands as equipment PUWER regulation 6 expects to be inspected at suitable intervals. It does not fix that interval at 12 months.
Is the Garvee stand rated at 680 kg?
This comparison does not treat the Garvee listing (B0GS1B48Y9) as a settled 680 kg stand, or as a settled 340 kg stand. The title states 340 kg and four castors. A bullet states 680 kg and 1,500 lb, and five swivel castors. The price is about £56.99, the head is described as 360 degrees, and a lock count is not stated. This amazon.co.uk extract has no star line and no reviews. There is no single plate to match to a dressed engine.
Can the DETYI stand hold a car engine?
The DETYI E7120 (B0F6WCG8HT) is a motorcycle bench stand at about £56.86 with an item weight of 4.2 kg. The title states 1,000 lb, and the specification table does not give kilograms, so that line is not a 450 kg workshop plate. The fitment bullet names 50 cc to 500 cc singles, motorcycle and ATV engines, and inline engines. The title also says car repair. Keep it for the small engines the bullet names. amazon.co.uk shows 4.2 from 34 ratings.
How much do these engine stands cost?
On these amazon.co.uk listings, read on 19 October 2026, prices are about £55.21 for the YOLANDO cradle, about £56.86 for DETYI, about £56.99 for Garvee, about £79.75 for AB Tools, about £103.90 for the Sealey ES350, about £149.99 for T-Mech and about £161.88 for the Performance Tool strap stand. A same-day snapshot showed other 450 kg stands from the mid-£50s to about £85. These are point-in-time prices, and they can move.

Our verdict

The top pick is the T-Mech folding engine stand at about £149.99. It scores 83, the highest of these seven, because the title and a bullet state 900 kg together with eight locks, six castors and two brakes. UK reviews in the extract still report head play and arrival damage, so the pin and the welds need a look before an engine goes on. Best value is the AB Tools stand at about £79.75, a different ASIN, score 69, with one 450 kg figure and six locks and with no amazon.co.uk review sample. Skip the T-Mech if a 450 kg plate already covers the dressed engine. Skip AB Tools if you need brakes, a folding frame or owner comments first.
