Peter F.Editor

You meet it on timber and plywood, on a screed that is still shrinking, under electric underfloor heating, and under large porcelain. It does not stop a floor that bounces. You use an uncoupling membrane, reinforced tanking, or a tile backer board, and only on timber that is already rigid. What to check before you buy is set out in the [decoupling mat buying guide](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/decoupling-mat/sub/decoupling-mat-buying-guide). A Decoupling mat is chosen for the job it has to do. A decoupling mat, also called an uncoupling membrane, is the sheet bedded in tile adhesive so moderate sideways movement in the subfloor is less likely to crack the tile or the grout.

Question 1 of 2

What do you need printed before you pay?

The best Decoupling mats in detail

FloorNation 3 mm, 5 m²

Rank 1

FloorNation 3 mm, 5 m²

∼£58

Our view

FloorNation’s yellow roll is £57.95 with 3 mm, a stated 5 m², and a weight of 3 kg. The same listing’s dimensions are 100 x 20 cm, and the material field says stone polymer composite vinyl while the bullets describe a decoupling membrane. Four United Kingdom reviews, all positive and short, are word-for-word the same texts as on B0GZQFLZBH and B0GZQVCFR3. Buy it only after the seller confirms you are getting 5 m² of a 3 mm mat.

Pros

  • 3 mm stated
  • Cement-based adhesive named
  • Wood, concrete, and underfloor heating named
  • £57.95 if the 5 m² line is the true area

Cons

  • 100 x 20 cm does not match 5 m²
  • Material field says SPC vinyl
  • Only four reviews, shared with two other ASINs
  • No decibel figure for the sound claim

Best for: You want a stated 3 mm and a named cement adhesive, and you can confirm the roll area before you pay.

Less suitable: You need the square metres and the material field to agree before you order.

Common questions

How big is this FloorNation roll?

The title, the unit count, and the coverage field say 5 m². The dimension line says 100 x 20 cm. Those two figures are both in the listing and they do not agree.

What adhesive does the listing name?

Standard cement-based tile adhesive, for wood and concrete, porcelain, stone, ceramic, and mosaic.

What do the four reviews say?

They praise easy laying and, in one text, underfloor heating. None describes a defect. The same four texts appear on two other FloorNation ASINs in this set.

FloorNation 3 mm, £92.45

Rank 2

FloorNation 3 mm, £92.45

∼£92

Our view

This FloorNation listing is £92.45, 3 mm, and 15 kg, with part number 123 and a material field of stone polymer composite vinyl. It does not state square metres. The dimension line is 100 x 20 cm. Bullets claim a waterproof vapour barrier, electric and water underfloor heating, and standard tile adhesive for bathrooms and wet rooms. The four reviews match the other FloorNation files in this set. Skip it until coverage is confirmed, because the price cannot be turned into a price per square metre.

Pros

  • 3 mm stated
  • Electric and water heating named
  • Standard tile adhesive named
  • Wet rooms named in the recommended uses

Cons

  • No square metres
  • 15 kg beside a 100 x 20 cm line
  • Material field says SPC vinyl
  • Four shared review texts

Best for: You have already confirmed the roll area with the seller and you want the 3 mm claim in writing.

Less suitable: You are comparing price per square metre, or you need a colour and a coverage figure on the page.

tonchean 30 m x 1 m liner

Rank 4

tonchean 30 m x 1 m liner

∼£85

Our view

The tonchean liner is £84.99 for a light green roll listed at 30 m x 1 m, 0.5 mm, and 10.9 kg, in high-density polyethylene with polypropylene faces. A bullet uses the phrase tile waterproofing uncoupling membrane and describes cutting and laying another layer, which is not a fleece-and-stud method. Heating and adhesive are not named. The star line is 5.0 from one review and the file has no review text. Choose it as a large thin liner, not as a 3 mm cavity mat.

Pros

  • Coverage and thickness agree at 30 m x 1 m and 0.5 mm
  • Material named as HDPE
  • 10.9 kg and the model UKB10-10042 are stated
  • Bathrooms are named in the bullets

Cons

  • 0.5 mm liner, not a 3 mm cavity mat
  • Adhesive and heating are not stated
  • One review and no review text
  • Install bullet does not describe a fleece face

Best for: You specified a thin HDPE waterproofing liner and you want about 30 m² on one roll.

Less suitable: You want a 3 mm studded uncoupling mat with a fleece and a named tile adhesive.

Common questions

Is this a 3 mm decoupling mat?

No. The dimensions are 3000 x 100 x 0.05 cm, which is 30 m by 1 m by 0.5 mm. One bullet calls it a tile waterproofing uncoupling membrane.

Does the listing name underfloor heating?

No. The bullets name cement floors, ceramics, stone, basements, kitchens, and bathrooms.

Can it be used in a shower?

That question is on the listing and is not answered as a separate field. The bullets name bathrooms and a waterproof liner. There is no review text.

Nassboards orange 5 m²

Rank 5

Nassboards orange 5 m²

∼£50

Our view

The Nassboards orange membrane is listed at £49.99 with 5 m² in the title and 4.6 from 145 amazon.co.uk reviews. Across 25 United Kingdom texts, buyers often say it cuts and lays easily and costs less than other shops. One verified review could not match the roll to a white-fleece-down instruction. Thickness, weight, and adhesive are absent from the spec table, and the raw ASIN line reads B093XS6RG2 while the product URL is B093X9BHNP. It is the best value in this set only as a stated 5 m² roll with the largest review sample, not as a measured mat.

Pros

  • £49.99 with 5 m² stated in the title
  • 4.6 from 145 reviews, the largest sample here
  • Bullets name wood, concrete, and underfloor heating
  • Reviews often mention easy cutting

Cons

  • No thickness in the spec table
  • One review could not match the fleece face to the photo
  • Adhesive is not named in the bullets
  • Raw ASIN line and product URL do not match

Best for: You want the lowest price in this set on a roll whose title says 5 m², and you will confirm thickness on the live page.

Less suitable: You need a stated thickness, a named adhesive, or a datasheet before you tile.

Common questions

Does this Nassboards roll state a thickness?

No. The spec table has no thickness. The title calls it a plastic decoupling membrane and puts 5 m² at the end.

Can the listing be used with underfloor heating?

The bullets name wood and concrete floors, underfloor heating, porcelain, stone, and mosaic. They do not name an adhesive.

Which way does the fleece face?

The bullets do not say. One United Kingdom review says the picture and a seller reply said white fleece down, and the roll was the other way round.

Nassboards Pro Mesh

Rank 6

Nassboards Pro Mesh

∼£190

Our view

Nassboards Pro Mesh is £189.99 in beige plastic, with waterproof as a listed feature and underfloor heating in the bullets. The title offers three areas and the spec table locks none of them, and it gives no thickness or weight. Two United Kingdom texts are in the file: one bathroom timber floor with no reported tile movement, and one fleece that the reviewer found less secure than Schluter or Dural. At this price, with no area, it is the skip in this set until the variant is clear.

Pros

  • Mesh is in the product name
  • Waterproof is a listed feature
  • One review used it on a bathroom timber floor
  • Bullets name wood, concrete, and heating

Cons

  • £189.99 with no single coverage figure
  • No thickness or weight
  • Adhesive question is unanswered
  • One review faults the fleece bond

Best for: You already know which of the 30, 10, or 5 m² variants this price is, and you want the mesh name.

Less suitable: You are choosing on price per square metre or you need a stated thickness.

Common questions

Which size is £189.99?

The title lists 30 m², 10 m², and 5 m². The spec table does not choose one. Unit count is 1.

What adhesive should you use?

The listing asks that question. The bullets do not name an adhesive. They do name wood, concrete, and underfloor heating.

What did the two United Kingdom reviews say?

One used it on a bathroom timber floor and reported no tile movement. The other said the backing fleece is not secured like Schluter or Dural.

How we compared

Six amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the pages kept for this set. Weights are Amazon evidence 30, listing fit 40 and value 30. This is not a lab test, and a decoupling mat is not scored as if it were certified to BS 5385-3:2024. The two highest scores are tied and each listing has a material gap, so there is no top pick. The best value is the Nassboards orange roll.

1

Amazon evidence

30%

Stars and the review count on the amazon.co.uk line. The score drops when review text is missing, when the same four texts sit on three FloorNation ASINs, or when a UK text describes a fleece that faces the wrong way.

2

Listing fit

40%

A printed thickness, a coverage figure that agrees with the roll, a named substrate and job, a material field that matches the bullets, and a named cement or tile adhesive.

3

Value

30%

A stated area around £10 to £12 a square metre can score well if the area is credible. A 0.5 mm liner is not scored as a cavity mat. An unknown area cannot score like a known 5 m² roll.

Decoupling mat buying guide

Match the roll to the job before you compare the shelf price. Sideways movement, a wet room, and a cable-carrier mat are different buys. The six prices below are the amazon.co.uk lines in this comparison, from about £49.99 to about £189.99. A price per square metre is given only where the listing settles the area.

What is a decoupling mat?

A decoupling mat, also called an uncoupling membrane, is the sheet bedded in tile adhesive so moderate sideways movement in the subfloor is less likely to crack the tile or the grout. UK buyers meet it on timber and plywood, on a screed that is still shrinking, under electric underfloor heating, and under large porcelain.

Best for

  • A rigid, dry timber floor where the listing states a thickness and you can confirm the area
  • A stated 5 m² roll when you will check thickness on the live page before you tile

Not ideal for

  • A floor that bounces, or a wet room that still needs a sealed tanking layer
  • A cable-carrier mat, or a price per square metre where the area is missing or clashes

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying a craft mat, or reading waterproof as tanking

A craft cutting mat is not an uncoupling membrane. Tiles and grout are water-resistant, not waterproof. A wet room needs a continuous sealed layer at upstands, drains and pipes. A mat is that layer only when the maker says so and the joints are sealed.

  2. 2

Fleece up, overlapped sheets, or a sprung floor

Fleece-backed sheets bond fleece-down. Sheets are not overlapped unless the maker specifies a taped lap for waterproofing. A mat cannot stop vertical bounce. BAL’s note, citing BS 5385-3:2024, still wants the timber rigid before you tile.

  3. 3

Treating one set of four reviews as three brands

The same four United Kingdom texts appear on the three FloorNation ASINs in this set. That is one sample, not three. Where square metres and the dimension line disagree, do not invent a price per square metre.

What to weigh up

Job, substrate and build

High

Name the job before the price. The mat is for lateral movement. BAL’s deflection note says it cannot stop vertical bounce, so a sprung floor is a tiler’s job. Wood and concrete are named on the FloorNation and Nassboards bullets. The Tile Association, reporting BS 5385-3:2024, says timber is a poor base in wet or frequently damp rooms, and that direct tiling to plywood and other wood-based boards is no longer allowed.

Coverage, waterproofing and the review sample

High

A coverage figure has to survive the dimension line. Nassboards orange says 5 m² in the title at about £49.99, about £10 a square metre if that is the variant, with 4.6 from 145 reviews. One UK text could not match the fleece face to the photo. FloorNation’s yellow page says 5 m² and also 100 x 20 cm, so no price per square metre is given. The other two FloorNation listings are about £92.45 and about £127.95, both 3 mm and 15 kg, with no square metres.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A timber kitchen floor

You are tiling a timber or plywood floor that is already rigid and dry. The FloorNation yellow roll states 3 mm, wood and concrete, and a cement-based tile adhesive, at about £57.95. The same page also says 100 x 20 cm against a 5 m² line, so confirm the area before you pay. A mat does not stop bounce.

Electric or water heating

You need a listing that names underfloor heating, and you will confirm the roll size. The FloorNation page at about £92.45 names electric and water heating, standard tile adhesive, and wet rooms. It does not state square metres, and the dimension line is 100 x 20 cm beside 15 kg. None of these six is a cable-carrier mat.

A stated area at the lowest price

You want the lowest shelf price on a roll whose title says 5 m², and you will confirm thickness on the live page. The Nassboards orange membrane is about £49.99 with 4.6 from 145 reviews, the only large sample here. Thickness and adhesive are not in the spec table.

Common questions about Decoupling mats

Which decoupling mat is the top pick in this comparison?
No top pick is awarded. The Nassboards orange roll and the FloorNation 3 mm listing that states 5 m² both score 61, and each has a material gap. The orange roll has no thickness in the spec table. The FloorNation page states 3 mm and also prints 100 x 20 cm against a 5 m² line. A tied score with those gaps is not a winner. The best value is named separately, on the orange roll.
Which listing is the best value?
The best value is the Nassboards orange membrane, about £49.99, with 5 m² stated in the title and 4.6 from 145 amazon.co.uk reviews. That is the lowest shelf price in this set and the only large review sample. Thickness, weight and adhesive are absent from the spec table, and one United Kingdom review could not match the fleece face to the photo. It is the best value as a stated 5 m² roll, not as a measured mat.
How much does a decoupling mat cost on amazon.co.uk?
Shelf prices in this set run from about £49.99 to about £189.99. A price per square metre is stated only where the area is credible. Nassboards orange is about £10 a square metre if the title’s 5 m² is the roll. The tonchean liner is about £2.83 a square metre, and it is 0.5 mm, not a 3 mm cavity mat. Where the area clashes or is missing, no rate is stated. Other UK shop rates are not these ASINs.
What should you check before you buy a decoupling mat?
Check the job first. The mat is for sideways movement. It does not stop a floor that bounces. Then read thickness, a coverage figure that matches the dimensions, the named substrate, and whether an adhesive is named. Waterproof on a title is not a wet-room system. Heating on a bullet is not a cable mat. None of these six is a cable-carrier mat. If square metres and the dimension line will not reconcile, do not invent the size.
Does waterproof on the title mean the room is tanked?
No. Tiles and grout are water-resistant. They are not waterproof. A wet room needs a continuous sealed layer at upstands, drains and pipes. A mat is that layer only when the maker says so and the joints are sealed. The Tile Association, on BS 5385-3:2024, says timber is a poor base in wet or frequently damp rooms. None of these six listings shows a UKCA or EAD line. NHBC wants wet rooms watertight behind the tiles.
Can you tile straight onto plywood?
Not under BS 5385-3:2024, as The Tile Association summarises it. Direct tiling to plywood and other wood-based boards is no longer allowed. You use an uncoupling membrane, reinforced tanking, or a tile backer board, and only on timber that is already rigid. BAL cites 15 mm as the minimum plywood thickness, screws at 300 mm centres, and up to 0.8 kN/m² extra dead load. If the floor deflects, call a tiler. A mat does not fix bounce.
What if the roll arrives wrong?
If the fleece faces the wrong way, or the size does not match the title, start with the seller. That is a fault with the roll, not a reason to invent a thickness. The hub note on a 30-day right for a faulty item sets out that returns point. One Nassboards review could not match the fleece to the photo. The three FloorNation listings share one set of four texts.
When should you call a tiler, and what if the floor is not flat?
Call a tiler when the floor deflects, the room has a floor drain, the joists need stiffening, or the coverage and the dimensions will not reconcile. A sprung floor should not be tiled on the strength of a mat. Fleece up, overlapped sheets, and a perimeter joint filled solid are fitting mistakes. A decoupling mat does not flatten a screed. An uneven floor is a different product, in the self levelling compound comparison.

Our verdict

No top pick is awarded. The Nassboards orange roll and the FloorNation listing at about £57.95 both score 61, and each has a material gap: no thickness on the orange roll, and a 5 m² line against 100 x 20 cm on the FloorNation page. The best value is the Nassboards orange roll at about £49.99, with 5 m² in the title and 4.6 from 145 reviews, the only large sample in the set. The tonchean roll is a 0.5 mm HDPE liner, not a 3 mm cavity mat. Nassboards Pro Mesh is about £189.99 with three areas in the title and none locked in the spec table.
