Decoupling membrane: checks before you compare the price

Updated: 21 October 2026

A decoupling membrane is the sheet you bed in tile adhesive so moderate sideways movement is less likely to crack the tile or the grout. You need the facts that have to agree on the listing before a shelf price is worth comparing. The [Decoupling mat comparison](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/decoupling-mat) lines up six listings from £49.99 to £189.99, checked on 19 October 2026. This guide is the checklist in front of that table. Products Compared read those amazon.co.uk pages and public UK tiling notes. It is not a laboratory test. What you are actually buying

An uncoupling membrane is a slip layer, not a new floor structure. The Tile Association’s technical guide treats it as a way of coping with moderate lateral stress, and it still expects movement joints to run through the mat. If the boards bounce, the sheet does not remove that vertical movement. BAL’s deflection note says uncoupling cannot compensate for vertical deflection. That decision sits on the tiling plywood with an uncoupling membrane page. Cavity mats have recesses you fill with adhesive. Thin sheets are a different build. The clearest mismatch is the tonchean roll: a 0.5 mm HDPE liner, 30 m by 1 m, at £84.99, which uses the word uncoupling once. Treat it as a liner unless the live page shows studs and a fleece.

Thickness, coverage, and a material field that matches

A price per square metre is only honest when the area is one number you can audit. Nassboards orange states 5 m² in the title and costs £49.99, about £10 per square metre if that title is the roll. It does not state a thickness. One line reads B093XS6RG2 and the URL uses B093X9BHNP. FloorNation B0GZR4N5Q2 states 3 mm and 5 m² at £57.95, and also 100 x 20 cm, which is 0.2 m². Pro Mesh at £189.99 lists 30, 10, and 5 m² without saying which the price is. One FloorNation field names SPC vinyl, a rigid floor covering, not this membrane. Once thickness, area, and material agree, the best decoupling membrane in this set page says who can still use the roll.

Heating, waterproofing, and adhesive

Heating, a waterproof word, and the adhesive are not the same purchase. A temperature cycle is a reason people uncouple. It does not make every orange roll a heating mat. If your heating instructions name a particular membrane, buy that system or confirm this roll is allowed. A waterproof word is a claim until the joints, the upstand, the drain, and the pipe collars are part of the same system. The decoupling membrane or tanking page works through that split. FloorNation bullets that name an adhesive say a standard cement-based tile adhesive. Nassboards bullets do not name one. Schlüter’s data sheet 6.1 gives about 1.5 kg per square metre to bed DITRA and about 2.0 kg per square metre to fill the recesses.

What the review count can and cannot prove

Stars do not fill a blank area line. Nassboards orange is 4.6 from 145 ratings. Three FloorNation ASINs are each 5.0 from 4, and the four United Kingdom texts match. Tonchean is 5.0 from 1, with no review text stored. The larger sample still cannot invent a thickness the title never states.

Common questions

Do I need a decoupling membrane under every tiled floor?
No. You are buying a slip layer for moderate sideways movement, on timber that is already rigid, on a screed that is still shrinking, or under large porcelain. A stable concrete floor that the adhesive maker lets you tile directly does not gain a structure from an extra sheet. If the floor bounces, fix the floor first. The mat is not a stiffener, and it does not replace movement joints.
What thickness should I look for?
Where this set states a thickness it is 3 mm, except tonchean at 0.5 mm on a 30 m by 1 m liner. Those are different builds. Nassboards orange at £49.99 does not state a thickness, so you cannot treat it as a 3 mm mat. Schlüter-DITRA is the reference system on the maker’s UK page, and it is not one of these six ASINs. Match thickness to the adhesive and tile that maker names.
How do I check coverage on an amazon.co.uk listing?
Read the title, the dimensions, and the price as one sentence. Five square metres at 1 m wide is a roll about 5 m long. A line that also says 100 x 20 cm is 0.2 m². FloorNation B0GZR4N5Q2 states both, at £57.95 and 3 mm. Pro Mesh at £189.99 lists 30, 10, and 5 m² against one price, so the area is still unknown. Do not calculate a rate until one area survives.
Is a waterproof word the same as tanking?
No. Waterproof on these bullets is a claim, and none of the six files shows a UKCA mark or an EAD number. A wet room needs a continuous sealed layer at upstands, drains, and pipes. A mat is that layer only when the maker says so and the joints are finished as that system. Tiles and grout stay water-resistant.
What is a fair price per square metre?
Where the area is real, Nassboards orange is about £10 per square metre at £49.99 for a stated 5 m². The tonchean liner is about £2.83 per square metre at £84.99, and it is 0.5 mm, so the rate is not comparable with a cavity mat. Rolls with no single area have no rate yet. Other UK shops the same day often sat around £7 to £16 per square metre. That band is a rule of thumb.
