The best kiln dried sand, compared.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

Kiln dried sand is fine washed sand dried so it flows into narrow joints on flexible UK block paving. The laying course is a different sand, and a mortar is a different joint. The set is plain silica, No (kiln dried sand plus a high-pH mineral), or colour-matched sand. Judge a bag by dryness, a grain for a joint of about 2–5 mm, and whether the listing sells a filler or a cure. Watering does not turn this sand into a cured joint. Plain, mineral and colour bags are separated in the [kiln dried sand buying guide](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/kiln-dried-sand/sub/kiln-dried-sand-buying-guide). A bag of sand will not lift a drive that has already sunk.

The best kiln dried sand in detail

UHL kiln dried sand 19 kg

Rank 1

UHL kiln dried sand 19 kg

∼£14

Our view

UHL's 19 kg bag is the cheapest shelf price in this set at £13.50, about £0.71 per kilogram, and the listing shows 5.0 from 2 reviews. The bullets describe kiln dried, low-moisture sand for block joints, artificial grass, resin-bound work and landscaping, and they do not claim a weed treatment or a set. The title says made in the UK, and the date first available is 15 June 2026. The technical line prints 1 × 1 × 1 cm next to 19 kg, which is not a usable bag size. The saved listing contains one of the two reviews: the sand filled patio gaps after years of dirt were cleaned out, and that review states no fault. Two ratings are not a reliability record, so the low price is the reason to look, and the stars are not.

Pros

  • 19 kg at £13.50, the lowest price in this set
  • No weed or hard-set claim on the bullets
  • The one written review describes filled patio gaps
  • Title says made in the UK

Cons

  • 5.0 from only 2 reviews, one of them in the saved listing
  • No sieve size, colour, joint width, or coverage
  • The size line prints 1 × 1 × 1 cm beside 19 kg
  • First available 15 June 2026, so the listing is new

Best for: You want the cheapest plain bag and you will not treat two five-star ratings as a test.

Less suitable: You need a stated grain, a colour match, or a review file large enough to judge washout.

Specialist Aggregates light grey 15 kg

Rank 2

Specialist Aggregates light grey 15 kg

∼£32

Our view

Specialist Aggregates light grey granite sand is a 15 kg kiln dried bag at £32.40, about £2.16 per kilogram, with 4.4 from 30 reviews. The listing states a grain of 0.1–0.7 mm and a light grey granite colour, and it does not claim to stop weeds or to set. It is sold for jointing grey granite paving and for loose display. Six reviews are in the saved listing: buyers praise the granite colour match, two call it expensive, one says rain washed it out, and one found the shade too light. There is no millimetre joint width and no coverage figure. Buy it when the blocks are grey granite and the colour is the point of the spend. It is a weak default if you only needed ordinary jointing sand at under £1 a kilogram.

Pros

  • Stated grain of 0.1–0.7 mm
  • Light grey granite colour named on the listing
  • No weed or set claim to misread
  • 4.4 from 30 reviews, with colour match as the praise

Cons

  • £32.40 for 15 kg, about £2.16 per kilogram
  • Only 30 reviews, and six written notes in the file
  • One review says rain washed it out
  • One buyer found the shade too light

Best for: You are jointing grey granite and want the sand colour to match the stone.

Less suitable: You want weed control, a hard set, or the cheapest filler for concrete blocks.

Specialist Aggregates black 15 kg

Rank 3

Specialist Aggregates black 15 kg

∼£32

Our view

The black Specialist Aggregates bag is 15 kg at £32.40, with a stated grain of 0.1–0.7 mm and 4.3 from 14 amazon.co.uk reviews. The bullets say it conforms to BS 7533 Part 3 for jointing grey granite and charcoal driveway block paving, which is this listing's claim and not a lab result from Products Compared. The same bullets also describe kiln dried black sand for crafts and event decoration, and they raise aquarium use without answering it in the spec table. Five reviews are in the saved listing: buyers cite the colour on block paving and a granite drive, one says the grains need to be finer for paving, and one review is an aquarium use. Fourteen ratings are too few to treat 4.3 as a settled record. Choose it for charcoal or black joints when you accept that sample size. Leave it if you wanted plain concrete-block sand with hundreds of driveway reviews.

Pros

  • Black colour with grain stated as 0.1–0.7 mm
  • Listing claims BS 7533 Part 3 for granite and charcoal blocks
  • Reviews mention the colour on block paving and a granite drive
  • No weed-free or hard-set promise on the page

Cons

  • 4.3 from only 14 reviews, five of them in the saved listing
  • One paving review wanted a finer grain
  • £32.40 for 15 kg, the same shelf price as the light grey bag
  • Craft and aquarium lines sit on a paving listing

Best for: You want black kiln dried sand for charcoal or granite blocks and you have read the BS line as the seller's claim.

Less suitable: You need a large UK review file, or you are buying sand for an aquarium.

Laeto kiln dried sand 20 kg

Rank 4

Laeto kiln dried sand 20 kg

∼£16

Our view

Laeto's 20 kg bag is plain kiln dried silica at £16.14, about £0.81 per kilogram, with 4.1 from 520 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest count in this set. The listing states a coverage of 20 m² and a fine grain, including a 0.5 mm line, and it does not give a joint width in millimetres. The bullets also call it setting sand and weed free for years, and one line presents it as an alternative to polymeric sand. In the first 50 UK reviews, buyers repeatedly say the sand stayed loose after watering and that weeds came back. One review describes a typical yellow-orange colour that did not match whiter sand already in the joints, and a perforated bag. It is the best value here when you want a cheap, well-reviewed filler and you will read those bullets as a sales line, not as a cure.

Pros

  • 20 kg at £16.14, about £0.81 per kilogram
  • 4.1 from 520 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Listing states fine silica and a 20 m² coverage
  • Usable as loose jointing sand if you do not expect a set

Cons

  • Bullets say setting sand; reviews say it stays loose
  • The weed-free claim is not what the review notes describe
  • No millimetre joint width on the listing
  • One review reports a perforated bag and a yellow-orange colour

Best for: You want the lowest well-reviewed price per kilogram for plain kiln dried sand.

Less suitable: You need a named colour, a stated 5 mm limit, or a joint that hardens.

The listing does not name a colour. One review calls it typical yellow-orange sand that did not match a whiter sand already in the joints, and mentions a perforated bag.

Dansand No Grow beige 10 kg

Rank 5

Dansand No Grow beige 10 kg

∼£12

Our view

This is the 10 kg beige Dansand No Grow bag at £12.32, about £1.23 per kilogram, with 4.0 from 369 reviews. The title and the item weight say 10 kg, while one specification bullet still says twenty kilogram bags, and the coverage line still reads 5–10 m², the same span as the 20 kg listing. Joints are stated up to 5 mm, matching the beige 20 kg page. Review titles praise the lighter bag and easy sweeping, and other titles say it does not set, that rain washes it away, and that weeds still grow. One review title says it was not suitable for Indian paving slabs. Carry this bag when 10 kg is the load you will lift and the joints are within 5 mm. Do not treat the 5–10 m² line as proof that half the weight covers the same patio as 20 kg.

Pros

  • 10 kg title weight at £12.32, easier to carry than 20 kg
  • Joints stated up to 5 mm
  • 4.0 from 369 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Review titles mention easy sweeping

Cons

  • A bullet still says twenty kilogram bags
  • Coverage of 5–10 m² matches the 20 kg listing
  • About £1.23 per kilogram, dearer than the beige 20 kg bag
  • Titles report no set, washout, and weeds

Best for: You want the beige mineral sand and a 10 kg bag is the load you will carry.

Less suitable: You are covering a large drive, or you need the page to agree on bag weight.

Dansand No Grow grey 20 kg

Rank 6

Dansand No Grow grey 20 kg

∼£28

Our view

The grey Dansand No Grow 20 kg bag is £27.99, about £1.40 per kilogram, with 3.9 from 698 reviews, the biggest review file in the set. The listing says the blend suits all paving types, resists erosion and rain, and does not give a millimetre joint limit or a coverage figure. The package line is 50 × 30 × 11 cm and the colour is stone dust. In the first 50 reviews, several buyers say the grains are thicker than ordinary kiln dried sand and will not enter a 1 mm block joint. Others waited for a hard set and still had loose sand, and weeds appear in the same pattern as on the beige bags. Take the grey bag when the paving is a matching stone-dust shade and the joints are wide enough for that grit. Leave it if your blocks are closed to about 1 mm.

Pros

  • Grey stone-dust colour in a 20 kg bag
  • 3.9 from 698 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Listing claims erosion resistance and does not promise a hard cure
  • Package size is stated as 50 × 30 × 11 cm

Cons

  • Reviews say the grain misses a 1 mm block joint
  • No millimetre joint limit on the listing
  • £27.99 is the dearest 20 kg bag in this set
  • Buyers still report loose sand and returning weeds

Best for: You want a grey mineral sand and your joints are wider than a hairline 1 mm gap.

Less suitable: You are topping up tight block joints of about 1 mm, or you want the cheapest kilogram.

Dansand No Grow beige 20 kg

Rank 7

Dansand No Grow beige 20 kg

∼£20

Our view

The Dansand No Grow beige 20 kg bag is kiln dried silica plus a high-pH mineral, listed at £20.39 with 3.9 from 308 amazon.co.uk reviews. The bullets state joints up to 5 mm and a coverage of 5–10 m², and they tell you to mix the bag because the contents can settle. Reviewers who liked it often mention an easy brush-in and a natural look on the patio. Others report weeds within a week or a few months, washout in heavy rain, and sand that never went hard. The same listing calls the bag setting sand and, in one bullet, driveway sand with weed killer, which is a stronger promise than the maker's line that this is not a weedkiller and that existing roots come out first. In this set it is the top pick when you want a 20 kg mineral bag that states a 5 mm joint, and you accept that the joint stays sand.

Pros

  • 20 kg beige bag at £20.39, joints stated up to 5 mm
  • Coverage line of 5–10 m² on the listing
  • 3.9 from 308 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Buyers praise the brush-in and the look
  • The bag is meant to be mixed before you sweep

Cons

  • Reviews report weeds within weeks or months
  • Heavy rain is said to wash the sand out
  • Called setting sand, yet buyers say it did not set
  • One bullet says weed killer, which the maker sheet does not support

Best for: You want a 20 kg mineral jointing sand and your block joints are within the stated 5 mm.

Less suitable: You need a joint that cures hard, or you are filling a gap wider than 5 mm.

Common questions

What joint width does this 20 kg beige listing state?

Up to 5 mm. The bullets also say to use it on a free-draining foundation with clean joints, and to mix the bag because the contents can settle.

Does the listing call it a weedkiller?

It says a high-pH formula inhibits weeds, and one bullet says driveway sand with weed killer. It also calls the bag setting sand and a self-setting alternative.

What do the UK reviews say about weeds and setting?

3.9 from 308 reviews. In the first 50, buyers praise the brush-in and the look. Others report weeds within a week or a few months, washout in heavy rain, and sand that did not set.

How we compared

Seven amazon.co.uk listings were scored on 19 October 2026 from the star line, the joint and grain figures printed on the page, and the shelf price in GBP. This is not a lab sieve test and not a weed trial. A 5.0 from 2 reviews is not treated as stronger evidence than a 4.1 from 520. Weights are Amazon evidence 35, listing fit 30, review outcome 20, and value 15.

1

Amazon evidence

35%

Star rating on amazon.co.uk, then a hard deduction when the count is two reviews, and a smaller deduction when the count is under about 30. A 5.0 from 2 is not treated as stronger evidence than a 4.1 from 520.

2

Listing fit

30%

A usable joint width, grain or coverage, and claims that match unbound kiln dried sand. Setting sand, weed free for years, or weed killer on a bag that reviews say stays loose is deducted. A size line of 1 × 1 × 1 cm beside 19 kg is deducted. A 10 kg title that still says twenty kilograms is deducted.

3

Review outcome

20%

Notes that the sand brushed into a joint score higher than a file that is mostly washout, a grain that misses a 1 mm joint, or a single written review.

4

Value

15%

Shelf price per kilogram. The cheapest bag does not win this block when only two ratings exist. A colour-matched 15 kg bag at about £2.16/kg is not scored as a cheap filler.

Kiln dried sand buying guide

Seven amazon.co.uk bags sit in this table, from plain silica at about £13.50 to colour-matched granite sand at about £32.40. Prices are the 19 October 2026 shelf. Buy the joint width, a dry bag, and a promise you can live with before you compare kilograms. Kiln dried sand fills a narrow flexible joint. It does not lift a sunk drive, and watering does not make it cure.

What is kiln dried sand?

Kiln dried sand is fine washed sand dried so it flows into narrow joints on flexible UK block paving. It fills the joint. The laying course is a different sand, and a mortar is a different joint. Empty joints let blocks rock. A bag of sand will not lift a drive that has already sunk. The seven bags fall into three types. Plain silica is Laeto 20 kg at about £16.14, with 4.1 from 520 reviews, and UHL 19 kg at about £13.50, with 5.0 from 2 reviews.

Best for

  • A dry top-up of block joints within about 5 mm
  • Plain loose filler when you will not treat the bullets as a cure
  • Grey granite or charcoal when the colour is the reason for the price

Not ideal for

  • A joint that needs to cure hard
  • A gap wider than about 5 mm, or a permeable pavement
  • A sunk drive, a moved edge, or an adopted footway

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Brushing damp sand into a damp joint

Damp sand bridges the top and leaves the joint hollow. The bag and the joints both need to be dry. A top-up after a wash waits until the paving has dried.

  2. 2

Watering the sand and waiting for a set

Kiln dried sand stays loose. Laeto and the beige Dansand pages call the bag setting sand. Reviewers say it did not go hard. A joint that cures is a different product.

  3. 3

Sharp sand, building sand or cement in a narrow joint

A flexible block joint of about 2–5 mm takes kiln dried sand and no cement. Sharp sand belongs in the bed. Judging weeds while roots remain misreads the Dansand mineral claim.

What to weigh up

Joint width and the promise

High

Joint width comes first. These bags suit narrow joints, commonly up to about 5 mm. Wide flag gaps are a different joint. Beige Dansand states up to 5 mm. Grey Dansand says all paving types and gives no millimetre limit, and reviews describe grit that will not enter a 1 mm block joint. Laeto, UHL and both Specialist Aggregates bags do not state a millimetre joint width. The bag and the joints need to be dry. Damp sand bridges the top and leaves the joint hollow. Then read the promise.

Grain, bag weight and price

High

Grain is stated on only two bags in this set. Specialist Aggregates light grey and black both print 0.1–0.7 mm. Laeto prints a fine grain and a 0.5 mm line, and no joint width. UHL says fine and gives no sieve size. Dansand does not state a grain on the spec table. Grey reviews often say the grains are thicker than ordinary kiln dried sand. Bag weight is the load you carry: 10 kg, 15 kg, 19 kg or 20 kg. The beige 10 kg title is the lighter Dansand.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Block joints within 5 mm

You are topping up flexible block paving and the joints are within the stated 5 mm. Dansand No Grow beige 20 kg is the top pick at about £20.39, with 3.9 from 308 reviews. Mix the bag. Existing roots come out first. Reviews still report weeds, washout and sand that did not set.

Plain filler, large review file

You want loose kiln dried sand and you will read setting and weed-free bullets as a sales line. Laeto 20 kg is the best value at about £16.14, about £0.81 per kilogram, with 4.1 from 520 reviews. The listing does not state a joint width in millimetres.

Grey granite colour match

The blocks are grey granite and the colour is the reason for the spend. Specialist Aggregates light grey is 15 kg at about £32.40, grain 0.1–0.7 mm, with 4.4 from 30 reviews. The listing does not claim to stop weeds or to set. Two written notes call it expensive.

Common questions about kiln dried sand

Which kiln dried sand is the top pick?
The top pick in this set is Dansand No Grow beige 20 kg at about £20.39. Joints are stated up to 5 mm, coverage is stated as 5–10 m², and amazon.co.uk shows 3.9 from 308 reviews. Reviews still report weeds, washout in heavy rain, and sand that did not go hard. The listing calls the bag setting sand. The maker's line is that this is not a weedkiller and that existing roots come out first.
Which kiln dried sand is the best value?
The best value is Laeto 20 kg at about £16.14, about £0.81 per kilogram, with 4.1 from 520 reviews. The listing states fine silica and a coverage of 20 m², and it does not state a joint width. The bullets say setting sand and weed free for years. In the first 50 UK reviews, buyers say the sand stayed loose after watering and that weeds came back. Read those bullets as a sales line.
How much does kiln dried sand cost?
On 19 October 2026 the seven amazon.co.uk bags ran from about £13.50 to about £32.40. UHL is about £0.71 per kilogram and Laeto about £0.81. Dansand beige 20 kg is about £1.02, beige 10 kg about £1.23, and grey 20 kg about £1.40. Both Specialist Aggregates bags are about £2.16 per kilogram. A merchant range of about £4–£8 a bag, quoted by a contractor, is context. It is not this shelf.
What should I check before I buy kiln dried sand?
Check joint width first. These bags suit narrow joints, commonly up to about 5 mm. Wide flag gaps are a different joint. The bag and the joints need to be dry, because damp sand bridges the top and leaves the joint hollow. Then read the promise: plain filler, mineral sand, or a colour match. Kiln dried sand stays loose. Only the Specialist Aggregates bags state a grain of 0.1–0.7 mm.
Does kiln dried sand stop weeds?
Do not expect years without weeds. Dansand says the mineral is a poor seedbed and that existing roots come out first. The maker and the Wickes sheet say No Grow is not a weedkiller. Beige listings also use a weed-killer bullet, which is a stronger promise than that sheet. Laeto's bullets say weed free for years. The first 50 UK reviews say weeds come back. Beige reviews report weeds within weeks or months.
Does watering kiln dried sand make it set?
Watering does not turn kiln dried sand into a cured joint. Waiting for a hard set is a common mistake. A joint that is meant to cure is a different product. Laeto and the beige Dansand pages call the bag setting sand. Reviewers say the sand stayed loose after watering. The grey Dansand listing says the blend resists erosion and rain, and it does not state a hard-setting cure.
How much kiln dried sand do I need?
There is no single coverage for every patio. CEMEX gives about 5 m² per 25 kg for a full joint. Dansand gives 20 kg for about 5–10 m². Paving.org.uk puts a top-up at one 20–25 kg bag per 15–30 m². Holcim, July 2025, gives about 7.6, 5.6 and 4.4 m² per 25 kg for 50, 60 and 80 mm blocks. The beige 10 kg page repeats the 5–10 m² line of the 20 kg bag.
When is kiln dried sand the wrong joint?
Get a professional if the drive has sunk, the edge has moved, the pavement is permeable, the joints need a bound fill, or the surface is an adopted footway. Sharp sand and building sand do not belong in a 2–5 mm block joint, and cement does not belong there either. A joint that is meant to cure is covered in the joint sand comparison. BS 7533-13 permeable paving uses grit, not ordinary kiln dried sand.

Our verdict

The top pick is Dansand No Grow beige 20 kg at about £20.39. It has the highest score in this set, with joints stated up to 5 mm and 3.9 from 308 reviews. Reviews still report weeds, washout, and no hard set. The best value is Laeto 20 kg at about £16.14, with 4.1 from 520 reviews, read as loose sand. Its setting and weed-free bullets are not what those reviews describe. UHL is the lowest shelf price, and 5.0 from 2 reviews is not a reliability record.
