Kiln dried sand vs polymeric sand

Updated: October 2026

You watered the joints, waited overnight, and the sand is still loose under your shoe. That is the usual end of treating kiln dried sand as if it were polymeric sand. The two products fill a gap between blocks and then diverge: one stays unbound, and the other is meant to cure after a controlled wetting. None of the seven bags on the [Kiln dried sand](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/kiln-dried-sand) comparison is polymeric sand, including the listings whose bullets say setting sand, grout, or an alternative to polymeric sand. This page is the fork, not a ranking of those bags and not the brush sequence. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two joints, not two brands

Kiln dried sand brushes into a narrow block joint and stays as sand. Trade sheets tell you to use it dry. A polymeric sand is brushed in dry as well, then activated with water so the grains are meant to bind. Homebuilding & Renovating describes that step, and notes that the joint can still crack. Concrete block joints in this guidance are commonly about 2–5 mm. Pavingexpert treats polymeric compounds as a later category, often for joints around 10 mm and wider. Read the range on the bag you are considering. Dansand No Grow in this set is kiln dried sand with a high-pH mineral claim, not polymeric sand. The maker’s moistened polymeric product is not one of these seven ASINs.

What these listings actually are

Every bag in this comparison is kiln dried sand. Laeto’s 20 kg listing, £16.14 with 4.1 from 520 reviews, calls itself setting sand and an alternative to polymeric sand. It is a loose filler, not a curing joint at a silica price. Beige Dansand is £20.39 with joints up to 5 mm, and reviewers still report sand that never went hard. Grey Dansand says it resists erosion and does not state a hard cure. Both Specialist Aggregates bags and UHL state no set claim. If you need a hard joint, you are not choosing among these seven. The criteria for staying with unbound sand are on the kiln dried sand buying guide.

When polymeric sand earns the extra

Polymeric sand earns the extra when unbound sand will not stay, and when you will finish it properly. Block Paving Revive describes ordinary drives as laid with kiln dried sand that washes out, and polymeric sand as the joint meant to firm up on a slope. On a level patio you can top up, kiln dried sand is still the ordinary joint. On a fall that empties after every storm, a curing joint is the next buy. Brush polymeric sand in dry, clear the block face, then add only the water that product specifies. Surplus that you then wet can haze the concrete, which Tobermore notes. Contractor price bands in a Homebuilding article are not the £13.50 to £32.40 range in this set.

What this page will not claim

This page will not tell you which of the seven bags hardens, because none of them does. It will not call Dansand No Grow polymeric sand, and it will not price a polymeric product from this set. Dry joints and a diagonal brush, with no hose, are the short version. The plate and the top-up quantity sit on how to apply kiln dried sand. A sunk drive is no longer a sand problem on kiln dried sand for block paving. Buy a polymeric sand, from a listing that says it is polymeric and states a joint width, only when washout is the fault you are paying to change.

Common questions

Why is my kiln dried sand still loose after watering?
Because water does not make it set. Kiln dried sand is unbound jointing sand. Reviews on Laeto and on Dansand No Grow include people who watered the joint and still had loose sand. A polymeric product is built to be activated with water. These bags are not that product.
Is Dansand No Grow polymeric sand?
No. The beige and grey No Grow bags in this comparison are kiln dried sand with a mineral, high-pH claim. Dansand has sold a separate polymeric product that is moistened. That product is not the 10 kg or 20 kg No Grow listings here. Watering No Grow does not complete a cure the bag never had.
Is Laeto an alternative to polymeric sand because the bullet says so?
The bullet says it. The reviews do not. At £16.14 with 4.1 from 520 reviews, buyers report sand that stayed loose and weeds that returned. Use Laeto as plain kiln dried filler, which is why it is the best value in this set. Do not use the bullet as proof of a cure.
When is a curing joint the better buy?
When the unbound sand keeps leaving, especially on a slope, and you will brush it in dry, clear the face, and wet only what the instructions allow. On a level drive you are happy to top up, kiln dried sand is still the ordinary joint. A joint around 10 mm may sit outside the 2–5 mm window, so check the polymeric bag’s own range.
What goes wrong if polymeric sand is left on the block face?
The polymer can haze or stain the concrete when you water the surplus. Tobermore and paving restorers both flag that risk. Clear the face before activation. Do not copy that watering step onto kiln dried sand in the hope of a similar bond. You will only wet loose sand.
What should this comparison not pretend to stock?
A polymeric sand, a resin joint, or a lab result that any of these seven bags sets. The shelf here runs from UHL at £13.50 to the Specialist Aggregates bags at £32.40, and every one of them is kiln dried sand. Contractor price bands in a Homebuilding article are not these amazon.co.uk prices.
