Common questions about car parts

What is a mass air flow sensor?
It tells the engine computer how much air is entering so the computer can set fuel and, on many diesels, exhaust-gas recirculation. A replacement has to match the old sensor's number, pins and housing. This hub compares 11 complete sensors on amazon.co.uk, from about £17.99 to about £49.89. A wiring plug was left out because it is not the sensor.
Which mass air flow sensor is the top pick?
In this set the top pick is the HouYeen 6C11 insert at about £17.99, rated 4.2 from 98 reviews, for OE 6C11-12B579-AA. The best value is the HouYeen 8V21 at about £19.99, and that is a different Ford suffix. Neither award is a Bosch or dealer part, and neither means the car will pass the MOT.
Does a P0101 code mean you should buy a sensor?
P0101 means the airflow signal is outside the range the computer expects. Check the air filter, hose clips, oil on the element and the wiring before you order a meter. A new part can be the wrong number, and it can put the car into limp mode. The symptoms guide on the sensor comparison sets that order.
Will an engine management light fail the MOT?
On the GOV.UK MOT manual, an engine malfunction indicator lamp that is inoperative or indicating a fault is a Major defect for petrol cars first used on or after 1 July 2003 and diesels first used on or after 1 July 2008. The tester does not inspect the mass air flow sensor by name. Clearing a code is not a repair.
What is a mechanic creeper?
It is a low wheeled board you lie on so you can move under a vehicle that is already held by axle stands or a lift. It is not a jack, and it does not hold the car. Nine amazon.co.uk listings run from about £31.72 to about £97.99. None was load-tested.
Which mechanic creeper is the top pick?
The DAYUAN 97971 at about £35.95 leads this set: a stated 120 kg, a size of 100 × 48 × 12 cm, six castors, and 4.5 from 31 reviews. The BOOMSTART BS013 at about £43.21 is the best value, with 4.3 from 74 reviews on a folding seat. A stated capacity is not a load test, and the board still does not support the car.
Can you go under a car that is only on a jack?
No. A jack lifts the car. It does not hold it while you are underneath. Use axle stands or a lift rated for the vehicle, then use the creeper only to move yourself. The under-car safety page on the creeper comparison sets that limit.
