MAF vs MAP sensor: which air sensor you have

Updated: October 2026

Someone has told you the air sensor is faulty, and the amazon.co.uk results all sound as if they measure air. A MAF vs MAP sensor decision is the difference between a mass reading in the intake pipe and a pressure reading on the manifold. Order the wrong one and the original code stays put. Kevin B. wrote this for Cars & motoring. None of the eleven listings in our [mass air flow sensor comparison](/hub/car-parts/mass-air-flow-sensor), checked on 19 October 2026 and priced from about £17.99 to about £49.89, is a manifold pressure sensor. Two different measurements

A mass air flow sensor measures how much air is entering and turns that mass into a signal the computer uses to set fuel. Bosch UK's air-mass note describes that job, not a MAP sensor. Hot-wire and hot-film designs both infer mass from heat. A hot-film title is still a MAF. A MAP sensor measures manifold absolute pressure through a membrane. NGK NTK draws the line: the MAF sits between the filter and the manifold, and the MAP reads pressure. A boost sensor is a MAP on the charged side of a turbo. Both can cause limp mode, smoke and a warning lamp. The measurement is not interchangeable.

Where you find them

The MAF is in the intake duct, between the air filter and the throttle or the turbo inlet. In the Ford reviews it is a flange beside the air box: a plug and two Torx screws on a Galaxy, and a Transit swap of about two minutes. Weights run from 58 g for an insert to 400 g for a housing such as the GELGP Mokka assembly. A MAP or boost sensor is on the inlet manifold or in a hose on the boost side, usually a smaller sender with a pressure port. If the failed part was on a hose after the turbo, or screwed into the manifold, it is not an insert from this comparison. Once you are holding a MAF, count the pins. Five-pin and eight-pin housings are different parts here.

Diesels, EGR and turbo cars

Many turbodiesels have both sensors. NGK treats the diesel MAF mainly as an input for exhaust-gas recirculation, while the MAP or boost sensor reports manifold pressure. Smoke, an EGR code and a boost code can arrive together. Replacing only the mass meter can leave the lamp on. Do not assume every diesel has a MAF. The code and the old part decide. P0100 to P0103 name the mass air flow circuit. P0101 is a range judgement, so a leak after the meter can set it on a sensor that still works. That check is on the MAF sensor symptoms page. A code that names manifold pressure or boost points at the other part.

What this comparison actually sells

Every listing in the comparison is sold as a mass air flow sensor. None is a MAP sensor. The choice is which MAF matches the old number, the pins and the housing, from about £17.99 to about £49.89. A wiring plug at £8.79 was removed because a connector is neither part. Use the MAF sensor buying guide only when the connector matches a mass meter you removed. 6C11-12B579-AA, 7M51-12B579-BB and 8V21-12B579-AA are different families. If the failed part is on the manifold, leave this category. Fitting the flange meter is on the how to replace a MAF sensor page.

When to stay, and when to leave

If the old part is a flanged meter in the intake pipe and the code names mass air flow, stay in this comparison and match the number. If the part has a pressure port on the manifold or a boost hose, this category is the wrong basket. A connector is neither sensor.

Common questions

Can a car have both?
Yes. Many turbodiesels have a mass air flow sensor and a manifold or boost-pressure sensor at the same time. NGK uses the MAF as an input for EGR control, while pressure is a separate measurement. A turbo on the bonnet is not proof you have a MAF. If you have both a mass-air code and a boost code, replacing only one sensor can leave the lamp on.
Which fault codes point at the MAF?
Codes that name the mass air flow circuit, including P0100, P0101, P0102 and P0103, point at that meter or at the air path around it. A split hose can set P0101 on a sensor that still works. A code that names manifold pressure or boost is a different component.
Will a MAP sensor fix P0101?
No. P0101 is a mass air flow range or performance code. A manifold pressure sensor measures a different quantity and will not supply the airflow signal that code is judging. Leaks and restrictions set P0101 as well, which is why the intake hose and the air filter come before the basket. A MAP in the order does not clear P0101.
What is a boost pressure sensor?
A boost pressure sensor reads pressure on the charged side of a turbo. NGK NTK treats that sender as a variant of the MAP, not as a mass air flow meter. If your code says boost and the part sits on a hose after the turbo, you want that sensor, not a MAF insert from this comparison. The two can be faulty together on a diesel, and they are still ordered as separate parts.
I ordered a connector. Is that either sensor?
A connector is neither. A wiring plug listed at £8.79 was taken out of this comparison because it is a harness piece, not a mass air flow sensor and not a MAP sensor. It can be the right plug for a meter you already have, and it does not replace the meter or the pressure sensor. Match the OE number of the sensor itself before you add a lead to the order.
