How to use a car creeper

Updated: October 2026

You have the board, or it is on the way, and the job is under a car in a UK garage. How to use a car creeper starts with the car, not with lying down. The rule that you do not go under a jack alone is on [working under a car safely](/hub/car-parts/mechanic-creeper/sub/mechanic-creeper-under-car-safety). Capacities are on the [mechanic creeper buying guide](/hub/car-parts/mechanic-creeper/sub/mechanic-creeper-buying-guide). This page does not rank the boards in the [mechanic creeper comparison](/hub/car-parts/mechanic-creeper). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the car before you touch the board

Put the car on hard, level ground. A slope is a stop, and so is gravel or broken concrete for small castors. Chock the wheels that will stay down. Leave the handbrake on and the car in gear, then use the jack only to lift far enough to place axle stands. The stands go on the maker’s strong points, with the proper pins in. A screwdriver, a nail or a spare bolt is not a pin. Lower the car onto the stands and shove it, the check Haynes UK describes. If the car moves, you are not ready. The creeper comes out only after that shove has failed to move the vehicle.

Get on the board and move

Set the creeper on that same hard floor, clear of the car. Lie on your back so the board supports your back, your bottom and your head. Push with your legs. Hauling yourself along by the sill is how people knock a stand. Your chest adds height that no listing here measures. If a board about 12 cm high plus your ribcage will not clear the sill, you stop. You do not sit up under the car. If a castor is already loose, you do not use the board.

Check a folding board before you trust it

Before you lie on a folding creeper, confirm that the lock engages and that the castor nuts are tight, with the board empty. Reviews in this comparison repeat nuts that undo, a head section that will not lock, and parts missing so the seat cannot be built. A Hilka review describes a hinge that opened onto a shin. If the back drops when you raise it, you do not lie on it and you do not sit on it. A moulded board has no lock, and it cannot become a seat halfway through the job.

Stop, store it, and what the sheet forbids

When you pause, get off before you walk away. Push the creeper under the vehicle or stand it on end, and do not leave it where a wheel can roll into a stand. Draper’s 81908 sheet forbids three uses, and the ban covers this kind of board, not only that ASIN. Do not stand on the creeper. Do not skate on it. Do not put it under tyres. It is not lifting equipment. Leave the job when you lack rated stands and level ground, when air suspension or a falling cab is involved, or when the work is under a customer’s vehicle and the stand inspection is out of date.

When you get off

Get off if the lock will not hold, if a castor is loose, or if your chest and the board will not clear the car. If the lock, the castors or the clearance is wrong, you stay off the board.

Common questions

Do you jack the car before you use the creeper?
You jack only to place axle stands. Chock the wheels that stay down, use the maker’s strong points, fit the proper pins, and lower the car onto the stands. Shove the car. If it moves, you are not ready. The creeper comes after that. A jack left as the only support is not the setup, even if the board is already on the floor.
How do you lie on the board?
Place it on a hard level floor, clear of the car. Lie on your back so the board supports your back, your bottom and your head. Keep your chest in mind, because the sill clearance is the board plus you, and no listing here measures that gap. If you will not fit, you stop. You do not sit up under the sill to gain a few centimetres.
How do you move once you are on it?
Push with your legs. Let the heels steer. Pulling yourself along by the sill is a way to knock a stand or catch a hand. Roll out before you sit up. On a folding board, sit up only after the lock has held on an empty test, and only once you are clear of the car.
What do you check on a folding creeper before you lie down?
Check that the lock engages and that the castor nuts are tight, with nobody on the board. Reviews in this set describe nuts that undo, a head section that will not lock, missing conversion parts, and a hinge that opened onto a shin. If the lock does not hold, you do not lie on it. This check is not a ranking of those listings.
Can you use it on a slope or on gravel?
No. A slope is a stop, and gravel or broken concrete is a stop for a board on small castors. Use the same hard, level surface you already chose for the stands. Moving the job onto a drive that fails that test is the point where you leave the creeper in the garage.
Where do you put the creeper when you stop for a break?
Get off it first. Push it under the vehicle or stand it on end, and when you finish put it where it will not trip anyone or roll into you. Folding it flat is a storage option some boards offer. It is not a reason to leave it in a walkway. Do not stand it where a wheel can creep into a stand.
