How to plane a door with an electric planer

Updated: 22 October 2026

The door sticks on the new carpet, and an electric planer looks quicker than a hand plane. How to plane a door with an electric planer starts with whether this leaf may be reduced at all. An ordinary painted door, a hollow core, and a fire door are three different limits. The general pass is on [how to use an electric planer](/hub/tools/electric-planer/sub/electric-planer-how-to-use). Prices are on the [electric planer comparison](/hub/tools/electric-planer). Peter F. used GOV.UK, the BWF Fire Door Alliance, and the saved reviews on 21 October 2026. Before you switch the planer on

Look for a fire-door mark or smoke seals before you think about millimetres. GOV.UK's guidance on the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 states no more than 4 mm at the frame, and at the bottom a gap as small as practicable. The BWF Fire Door Alliance says follow that door's instructions: head and side gaps around 2–4 mm, and a threshold typically 8–10 mm in their wording. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland that England page is not the statute. A hollow door stops sooner than a solid rail. A Premdor CF 198 sheet allows up to 10 mm at the bottom on some rails. A Howdens FD60 sheet says 8 mm at the bottom and do not trim the top. Those figures belong only to that leaf.

Mark the carpet and take the door off

Close the door on the carpet you will keep, including a threshold bar if one is going back. Mark the rub in pencil, then add only the clearance the door needs to swing. Baker Finch's ordinary-door note talks about 5–10 mm over carpet. That is their fitting advice, not a legal gap, and it is not a target for a fire door. Take the door off the hinges and lay it on trestles, bottom edge towards you, so the cutter cannot meet the floor. Keep the pencil line until the last pass. A fence, where the Einhell, either Draper, or the Ryobi includes one, keeps the sole square. It does not set the gap.

Passes from each end toward the middle

Set a shallow pass. The listing maximum, often 2 mm or 3 mm in this set, is more than you want while you are still learning the edge. Work from each end toward the middle so the cutter runs into supported timber and the corners do not split. Let the motor reach speed before the sole meets the rail, keep pressure on the front shoe as you enter, and move it to the rear shoe as you leave. The two passes should overlap slightly, at the same depth, so you do not leave a ridge. Offer the door back before another round. Fit the bag or a hose before the first indoor pass. If the hollow core shows, or the pencil line would remove the solid rail, stop. A review that mentions fire doors on site is not permission to trim a certified leaf.

Seal, rehang, and when to stop

Paint or seal the fresh edge, including the end grain, before you treat the gap as final. Then rehang and check the head and the latch. On an ordinary door, a head that fouls the frame means check the hinges before you cut more timber. Call a joiner when a fire door has no written trim limit, or when the hollow rail is nearly gone. A planer does not restore a certificate. Depth and dust are in the electric planer buying guide. A lead or a pack in the hallway is on corded or cordless electric planer.

Common questions

How much clearance should I leave over a carpet?
Mark it from the carpet you will keep, not from a forum number. Baker Finch's seller note mentions about 5–10 mm over carpet for an ordinary door, and that is not a statute. For a fire door, GOV.UK's England guidance says the bottom gap should be as small as practicable, and the BWF says to follow the manufacturer.
Do I plane the door on the hinges?
Take it off. Support it on trestles with the bottom edge clear, so the sole stays flat and the cutter cannot meet the floor. A review that describes one vertical pass on a hung gate is one user's gate, not the way to trim an internal door over carpet.
How much can I take off a hollow door?
Only while solid timber remains in the rail. Baker Finch's fitting note says to saw, rather than only plane, if you need more than about 6 mm off the height of a hollow door. That is a seller's instruction, and your door may differ. One reviewer's claim of 13 mm off seven doors is not a limit you can copy.
Can I plane a fire door?
Only within the trimming allowance printed for that leaf, and not by guessing a forum gap. GOV.UK's England fire-door guidance and the BWF both point you back to the door's instructions, the seals, and a competent person. Do not remove the certification label. If you cannot find the allowance, leave the leaf alone.
What if the gap at the top would need a cut?
On a fire door, do not trim the top to compensate. Some manufacturer sheets, including a Howdens FD60 example, say not to trim the top at all. On an ordinary door, check that the hinges are seated and the frame is square before you remove timber from the head.
Should I seal the fresh edge?
Yes. Seal or paint the bare bottom, including the end grain, before you treat the gap as finished. Unsealed end grain takes up moisture from a damp room or a wet porch and can swell back into the carpet you have just cleared. Let the finish dry, then rehang and test the swing.
When do I call a joiner?
When the door is a fire door without a written trim limit, when a hollow rail is nearly gone, when seals or glazing are involved, or when the frame gap would have to grow past the small clearances the BWF describes. Also call one if the door still binds after a light, marked pass and you are no longer sure which edge is proud.
