Electric planer buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a door that catches on a new carpet, and the amazon.co.uk grid is full of 82 mm, 2 mm, and brand names that may not be the brand of the tool. This electric planer buying guide is the order of checks: chip depth per pass, planing width, whether a dust bag is in the box, and whose battery the body will take. Prices and the twelve-row table stay on the [electric planer comparison](/hub/tools/electric-planer). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. compared the saved listings and public UK sources on 21 October 2026. We did not plane a test piece in a lab.

Chip depth and width

Width and depth answer different questions. Most rows state an 82 mm planing width, the size B&Q and ManoMano UK treat as the usual handheld iron. A door edge is narrower, so 82 mm rarely stops a carpet job. Millimetres per pass do. The Einhell TC-PL 750 states up to 2 mm. The DEKOPRO and the Draper 57564 state 0–3 mm. A shallower first pass is on how to use an electric planer. On the Draper 57564, 15.5 mm is the rebate, and the chip depth is 0–3 mm. The saved Ryobi R18PL-0 states 0–0.4 mm, so several millimetres means many passes. We do not average that with a different Ryobi page. That split is on corded or cordless electric planer. The Hilka leaves width and depth off the attributes.

Dust, fence, and knives

The Health and Safety Executive treats wood dust as a hazard that needs extraction, and at work that points towards a class M vacuum. A bag is in the box for the Draper 57559, the Draper 57564, and the Ryobi. It is not in the Einhell box list. The KATSU included line is the planer only. A fence steers the sole. It does not collect chips. A spare is not a blade you can always change. The Ryobi includes two reversible TCT blades. One Draper 57559 review calls the blade change very difficult. One KATSU buyer could not undo the bolts and returned the tool. A Hilka reviewer found a blade blunt after about twenty metres of decking and could not get a replacement.

Plug, volts, and whose battery it is

A corded planer on UK mains should arrive with a BS 1363 three-pin plug. Electrical Safety First says not to use a travel adaptor, and to unwind an extension reel fully. Several listings print no voltage. Check the plug. One Draper review reports a sheared earth pin. That is a return, not a taped adaptor. The Ryobi R18PL-0 excludes the battery and charger, so £97.37 is not a complete kit. The blayram listing says the body takes Makita 18 V batteries, then says the included packs are not for original Makita tools. Compatible with is a battery-shape claim, not proof you bought that brand. With no packs of your own, a lead is the simpler purchase.

What the star line does not prove

A star is a fraction. The count behind it is the evidence. The Einhell line is 4.5 from 6,008 reviews. The Ryobi is 4.7 from 1,198. The Draper 57559 is 4.4 from 159. The Hilka is 4.4 from 171, and the missing width and depth are still missing. The blayram line is 5.0 from five reviews. The YWBL-WH file has no customer-review line. Five stars from five people is not a stronger public record than 4.5 from thousands. Who that points to is on the best electric planer page. The comparison scores use those star lines and listed features. They are not a workshop trial.

Common questions

Is 82 mm the width I need for a door?
Yes for the edge of a normal internal door. 82 mm is the width of the cutter, and that edge is narrower. The number that changes the job is the chip depth. If a listing does not state a width, as the Hilka attributes do not, you cannot borrow 82 mm from the other rows.
What is a sensible chip depth per pass?
Lighter than the maximum on that listing, which here is about 0.4 mm, 2 mm, or 3 mm depending on the model. BuildWiz UK describes about 0.4–0.5 mm as a starting habit, and that is a practitioner method, not a figure on every amazon.co.uk page. On the saved Ryobi listing, 0.4 mm is already the stated maximum.
Why does one listing say 15.5 mm?
On the Draper 57564, 15.5 mm is the rebating depth in the bullets, and the chip depth is 0–3 mm. The attribute that stores 15.5 mm matches the rebate, not one pass across a door bottom. A rebate stop is useful when you mean to cut a step. It is not a deeper setting of the same knob.
Do I need a dust bag?
You need a way to catch the chips indoors. A bag is in the box on the Draper 57559, the Draper 57564, and the Ryobi, and it is absent from the Einhell box list. A bag can still fail: one Draper 57559 review says it split by the fourth door. A hose is the fallback reviews describe. At work, HSE guidance points to extraction rather than sweeping.
What plug should a corded planer have?
A UK three-pin BS 1363 plug, used in a UK socket, not through a travel adaptor. Electrical Safety First makes that point for jointers and planers. If the earth pin is damaged, as one Draper 57559 reviewer reported, fit a proper replacement plug or return the tool. Do not tape a continental plug into an adaptor.
Does compatible with Makita 18 V mean it is a Makita?
No. On the blayram listing the brand field is blayram. The bullets say the body accepts Makita 18 V batteries and that the packs in the box are not for original Makita tools or a Makita fast charger. The same split applies to the SWTHM body and DeWalt pack codes, and to the YWNYT body and Milwaukee M18 codes.
