Room thermostat buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are replacing a hall dial, or fitting the first proper control, and the results mix a £13.99 knob with a £129.99 wireless kit. A room thermostat buying guide has to separate those objects before you pay. The [room thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/room-thermostat) lists the four amazon.co.uk products. This page is the order of decisions: what the control switches, whether a programmer already exists, what is in the box, and what changes if a gas combi is installed in an existing home in England. The Products Compared editorial team updated this on 16 October 2026 from those listings and public UK sources. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Dial, programmable, or smart

Start with the job. A mechanical dial holds one setpoint and switches the heating call. It does not store weekdays. If a programmer already sits by the boiler, that box is the clock, and a dial can be enough. A programmable room thermostat stores a 5/2 or 7-day pattern on the stat itself. None of these four listings is that middle product. An amazon.co.uk ESI search on 16 October 2026 showed hard-wired programmable stats around £32, outside this basket. Here you are buying a switch, and the clock lives elsewhere. A schedule is useless if the switch voltage is wrong for the boiler.

Volt-free, relay, and OpenTherm

Many combi boards expect a volt-free pair: contacts that close to call for heat without sending 230 V into the board. The ESI bullets claim two-wire volt-free contacts. The voltage field says 230 V, which is the supply, not the switched output. The livager claims potential-free contacts. Read the boiler manual before you treat either dial as a drop-in. OpenTherm lets a compatible stat ask the boiler to modulate. The BEIS/BRE paper scores Class I on/off at 1 ErP point and Class V modulating load compensation at 3. The dials claim no class. Both tado X listings claim OpenTherm and a relay, and you use whichever interface the boiler manual already lists.

What changes when the boiler is replaced in England

Approved Document L Volume 1 (2021, 2023 amendments) is England guidance. Paragraph 6.2 says a new gas combination boiler in an existing dwelling needs one extra measure: flue-gas heat recovery, weather compensation, load compensation, or a smart thermostat with automation and optimisation. The Boiler Plus factsheet lists the same four, and the clarification paper says installers in England cannot opt the customer out. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are outside that paragraph. The rule does not name a brand, and it is not triggered by swapping a hall dial on a boiler that stays. The installer judges the smart option when the boiler changes.

Where the four listings sit

The ESI ESRTM (B00QGKSTD8) is a mechanical dial at about £13.99, with 4.4 from 1,139 ratings. An attribute line also says Wi-Fi, while the title and the reviews describe a dial, so treat that line as a conflict. It suits a two-wire volt-free swap beside an existing programmer. Reviews still report the scale several degrees out. The livager (B0FZ4Y89KP) is about £15.99, with 3.8 from 19 ratings. One buyer found the neon dead on a two-wire cable. The tado starter (B0D9QBPV51) lists Wireless Receiver X and the sensor. A bullet says no extra Bridge X is needed, although the title mentions one. AI Assist is £3.99 a month or £29.99 a year, and it is not compatible with tado V3+. The wired add-on (B0CWPG6G5W) excludes Bridge X.

When you stop and call an installer

HSE L56 puts a consumer control swap that does not open a gasway outside that part of the gas rules. Boiler replacement is Gas Safe work, and mains wiring in England and Wales sits under Part P. Stop when the cable count does not match, as in the livager reviews where a two-wire advert met three cores and the neon needed a spare conductor. Stop if the job grows from a new dial into a new boiler, because paragraph 6.2 then belongs to the installer. If you cannot point to the volt-free pair, leave the terminals alone and count the cores in the pattress before you order.

Common questions

Is a mechanical dial enough if I already have a programmer?
Yes, when the programmer decides the hours and the dial only decides the temperature that stops the call. The ESI ESRTM and the livager are that switch. They store no weekday programme. You still match volt-free or potential-free contacts to the boiler.
What does volt-free mean on a combi?
Volt-free means the thermostat closes a pair of contacts to call for heat without feeding 230 V into the boiler board. Many combi PCBs expect that dry contact. The ESI bullets claim volt-free two-wire contacts. Confirm the terminals in the boiler manual rather than reading the Amazon voltage field as the switched output.
Does OpenTherm matter if my boiler is only on/off?
It adds nothing if the manual only describes an on/off or volt-free input. OpenTherm is for a boiler that can modulate. Both tado X listings claim OpenTherm and a relay, so you use the relay on an on/off boiler. The two mechanical dials do not claim Class V.
Does Boiler Plus mean I must buy a smart stat?
Only when a gas combination boiler is installed in an existing dwelling in England. Paragraph 6.2 then requires one extra measure, and a smart thermostat with automation and optimisation is one of the four. The paragraph does not apply in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, and it does not apply to a dial swap on a boiler that stays. It names no brand.
Why is the tado add-on cheaper than the starter?
The add-on is about £79.99 and the starter is about £129.99 because the starter includes Wireless Receiver X and the add-on excludes Bridge X. Thread and Matter on the add-on need that bridge or another Thread border router. Bought first, the lower price leaves the boiler link missing.
