Wooden dowel or steel alignment pin: which pin to fit

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are aligning a table leaf or a model-railway baseboard, and a wooden pin and a steel pin are both in the basket. A wooden dowel or steel alignment pin is a job choice. Glue the wooden pin if the joint stays shut. The steel pin only lines boards up, and you still add a clip or a bolt. Prices are on the [heavy duty dowels comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/heavy-duty-dowels). Peter F. is the DIY & tools editor. A pin that lines up, and a pin that stays glued

The split is whether you will open the joint. A steel locator stops the boards sliding while a bolt or a clip pulls them together. A glued wooden pin is there so the joint stays closed. Station Road’s usual note is two dowel assemblies, with clips or bolts doing the clamp. Drill the mating ends together. One trade pack uses a 7.5 mm bit. Shentu and ZenithQuest state an 8 mm hole, so leave that bit on the trade pack. Lee Valley’s table-leaf sleeve is drilled slightly oversize so the leaf can move, and you still bolt or clip the leaf after it is lined up.

The steel pins in this set

ZenithQuest, B0FYF6K1DS, is about £7.99, carbon steel for an 8 mm hole, with a galvanised finish claimed. The title says 16 pairs, the pieces field says 32, and the items field says 16. The star line is 5.0 from two ratings and no review bodies. Shentu, B0H457QB31, is about £8.99 for 16 knurled pins titled 8 × 24.5 mm. The material field says iron, and there is no review line. A 250 lb bullet is a listing claim only, and it does not transfer to ZenithQuest. The knurl can grip an 8 mm hole while the boards still pull apart. Station Road still wants a clip or bolts. A hinge insert and a birch rod do not locate a baseboard.

Not a pattern-makers dowel

A pattern-makers dowel is a brass disc about 25 mm across. Kirby and Wells sells that set with an 8 mm hole. Station Road calls the brass type more accurate. Shentu and ZenithQuest are knurled 8 mm locators, not that disc, and not Fixaball DIN 6325 pins. A joint you will never open wants the wooden pin.

When to go back to a wooden pin

Choose the fluted wooden pin when the faces should stay glued: a cabinet, a frame you will not unbolt, or a repair that began as a wooden stub. ZEONHAK is the 8 × 40 mm pin when the hole measures 8 mm. A 6 mm hole wants a 6 × 30 mm pack. Glue is not in the packs. The drill is on the how to fit a fluted dowel pin page, and the pack choice is on best wooden dowel pins UK. A snapped stub belongs on the flat-pack dowel repair page. Use steel only when you will open the joint, and still fit a bolt or a clip.

Common questions

Will a steel pin hold two baseboards together?
It lines the ends up. Station Road says alignment dowels do not secure the boards, and that clips or bolts do. Two assemblies per joint is the usual note. ZenithQuest and Shentu only locate an 8 mm hole. You still add the clip or the bolt. The 250 lb bullet on Shentu is not that clamp.
Are these amazon pins pattern-makers dowels?
They are knurled steel locators. A pattern-makers dowel is a brass disc about 25 mm across with a short peg. Kirby and Wells sells that as a 25 mm set with an 8 mm hole. Shentu is 8 × 24.5 mm at about £8.99. ZenithQuest is the carbon-steel pin for 8 mm holes at about £7.99. Fixaball DIN 6325 pins are a machined third product, not these listings.
What hole does each steel pin state?
Both state an 8 mm hole. Shentu’s title is 8 × 24.5 mm. ZenithQuest names 8 mm and does not state a length in the fields used here. A trade pack’s 7.5 mm bit does not belong on either listing. Lee Valley’s slightly oversize sleeve lets a table leaf move. Measure your own hole before you treat 8 mm as the size already in the timber.
Can I glue a steel pin into a cabinet instead of a wooden pin?
Use the fluted wooden pin if the joint should stay shut. ZEONHAK at 8 × 40 mm suits an 8 mm hole, and a 6 × 30 mm pack suits 6 mm. You still supply wood glue, because the packs leave it out. A steel pin has no flute and is meant to come apart. If you might unbolt the cabinet later, fit the steel pin plus a bolt and leave the glue out.
Why do the ZenithQuest counts disagree, and is 250 lb a test?
The title says 16 pairs, the pieces field says 32, and the items field says 16. Those three lines cannot all be the parcel. Shentu’s 16 pins and 8 pairs can be one count, though the material field says iron and the bullets say galvanised carbon steel. No review says what arrived. The 250 lb line is a Shentu bullet, not a test, and it does not apply to ZenithQuest.
When is the wooden pin the one to buy?
Buy the wooden pin when you will not open the joint. A glued cabinet, a frame, or a snapped wooden stub wants the fluted pin at 8 mm or 6 mm, plus glue you supply. Buy the steel pin when a table leaf or a baseboard has to come apart, together with a bolt, a tee-nut or a clip. If the diameter is still unknown, measure the hole before you choose either pack.
