Wooden dowel pins buying guide: measure the hole first

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are matching a loose chair rail or an 18 mm cabinet side, and the search mixes wooden pins with steel locators, a hinge sleeve and birch rods. This wooden dowel pins buying guide starts with the hole, then the thinner piece, then one diameter or a mix. Hardwood and heavy duty do not name a species or a test. Prices are on the [heavy duty dowels comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/heavy-duty-dowels). Peter F. is the DIY & tools editor. Five different things in one search

A fluted wooden pin is a short peg that glue holds in two holes. In this comparison that is the PanBeiQi mix, the ShiFaKa mix, the 6 × 30 mm packs, and ZEONHAK’s 8 × 40 mm bulk pack. ZenithQuest and Shentu are steel locators for a joint you will open. InnoHHustle is 50 polypropylene inserts, 8.5 × 9.6 mm, for a stripped hinge hole. Coowayze is six birch rods about 2.5 cm by 30 cm for crafts. If the remnant is wood and the joint should stay shut, stay with a wooden pin. A table leaf or baseboard you will unbolt is the wooden dowel or steel alignment pin page. Heavy on the title does not choose the diameter.

Diameter and length from the hole

MyToolShed’s buyer note, a shop guide rather than a British Standard, puts the pin at about one third to one half of the thinner piece. On 18 mm board that is about 6 mm to 9 mm, so 8 mm sits in the middle and 10 mm can blow a thin edge. A bigger pin is not automatically stronger in a thin board. These listings state 6 × 30 mm, 8 × 40 mm and 10 × 40 mm, plus ShiFaKa’s 50 mm lengths. An 8 × 40 mm pin cannot be buried 20 mm each side of an 18 mm face. Furnica puts about 15 mm in the face and about 27 mm in the edge. The drill sequence is on the how to fit a fluted dowel pin page. If the pin bottoms out, the faces will not meet.

Flutes, and a wood that is actually named

Wonkee Donkee pairs a fluted pin with a same-diameter brad-point bit. A plain pin buried at both ends wants about 1 mm of clearance. Flutes let glue escape. A smooth rod in a tight hole can trap glue and split the edge. Coowayze’s rods are smooth and about 25 mm across, so that rule does not apply. None of the ten packs states beech, FSC or DIN 68150. Hardwood on Yukesaky and Xatgiouy names no species. ShiFaKa says lotus wood. SCF Hardware’s beech pins, about ±0.2 mm to DIN 68150, are not these ASINs. Two UK reviews say the PanBeiQi pins measured about 0.5 mm undersize. That is not a printed tolerance. If the dry pin rattles, more glue does not make it sized beech.

One size or a mixed box

Buy one size when every hole matches. ZEONHAK is 1,000 pins of 8 × 40 mm at about £15.99. One UK review says the Xatgiouy 6 × 30 mm pins break very easily. For mixed holes, PanBeiQi is 90 pins at about £4.49, split not stated, at 4.4 from 3,255. ShiFaKa at about £7.99 prints the counts for 225. Which pack to open first is on the best wooden dowel pins page.

Common questions

Do I buy 6 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm?
Match the hole you measured. On 18 mm board, about one third to one half of the thickness is 6 mm to 9 mm, so 8 mm is the usual flat-pack pin and 10 mm is the size most likely to burst a thin edge. Measure an intact hole before you trust the packet. A 10 mm pin in a mixed box does not belong in every joint. A steel locator for an 8 mm hole is a different product.
How long should the pin be if the board is about 18 mm?
These furniture packs state 30 mm or 40 mm, and ShiFaKa also states 50 mm. You cannot bury 20 mm of an 8 × 40 mm pin in an 18 mm face. Furnica’s example for that pin puts about 15 mm in the face and the rest in the edge, plus a small glue pocket. If the pin bottoms out, the faces will not meet. Check the board before you use the longest pin in the box.
Does hardwood mean beech?
No claim on these ten packs equates hardwood with beech. Yukesaky and Xatgiouy print hardwood and name no species. ShiFaKa says lotus wood. The other wooden pins say wood. Beech to DIN 68150, about ±0.2 mm, is what SCF Hardware prints on its own pins, which are not in this comparison. Coowayze names birch, and those pieces are 25 mm craft rods, not a fluted furniture pin.
Is a mixed box better than 300 pins of one size?
A mix is the better basket when 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm holes are still unmatched. PanBeiQi gives those three diameters at about £4.49 and does not say how many of each. ShiFaKa at about £7.99 prints the counts, with only ten pins on each 10 mm line. Three hundred pins of 6 × 30 mm are the better buy only after a calliper has said 6 mm. A single chair does not need 1,000 pins of one size.
Are the birch rods and the hinge inserts the same product?
No. Coowayze is six birch rods about 2.5 cm by 30 cm for crafts, at about £10.99. InnoHHustle is 50 polypropylene inserts, 8.5 × 9.6 mm, for stripped hinge holes, at about £5.29. A fluted furniture pin here is 6 mm, 8 mm or 10 mm and much shorter. The sleeve belongs with a hinge screw. The rod belongs with a craft cut.
