PE pipe comparison 2026: diameter, pressure, price

The best PE pipes, compared.

Top pick: Gardena connecting pipe 25 mm, 50 m – Highest score in the set: 25 mm in the title, 50 m, 6 bar printed, and 4.7 from 1,837 reviews for a sprinkler or pipeline coil. Best value: ilauke 15 m supply tube with fittings – About £13.99 for 15 m at 6 mm outside, a 2 mm wall, 5 bar and 1/4 inch fittings, with UK reviews on a fridge and a filter. Updated October 2026.

A PE pipe search in the UK covers three jobs that share a name. Black PE or LDPE is the garden tube. Short 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch tube feeds a fridge or a filter. None of them is a checked blue service coil. Outside diameters run from about 6 mm to 25 mm and are not substitutes. Its specification says and a bullet says PE, and the WRAS wording has no approval number. The title says 50 m and the specification says 1 m. If the garden branch might be another plastic, read [MDPE or PVC for garden water](/hub/rods-and-pipes/blog/mdpe-or-pvc-for-garden-water). Blue or service pipe is for buried cold drinking water, and shops still call that.

Question 1 of 2

Which job is the pipe for?

The best PE pipes in detail

Gardena connecting pipe 25 mm, 50 m

Rank 1

Gardena connecting pipe 25 mm, 50 m

∼£97

Our view

The Gardena 2701-20 is a black polyethylene coil with 25 mm in the title, 50 metres, and a maximum of 6 bar, at £96.95. The star line is 4.7 from 1,837 reviews, the largest file in this set. UK reviews call it durable once you use a proper cutter, and they also call it stiff: tight corners need elbows, and one reviewer used a hot-air gun to coax a bend, which is their method, not a printed instruction. A UK review says ordinary blue water pipe fitted the same connectors and cost less. The specification block also prints 1 inch outside diameter and 1 inch wall, so treat 25 mm in the title as the figure to check, and do not average the two lines. Fittings are not in the box, and there is no WRAS number. It is a sprinkler or pipeline supply, including a buried garden run if you push the pipe fully home, not a checked drinking-water service.

Pros

  • 25 mm in the title, 50 m, and 6 bar printed
  • 4.7 from 1,837 reviews
  • UV-stabilised claim, and above or below ground in the bullet
  • UK reviews that finished a sprinkler run with a square cut and a full insert

Cons

  • £96.95, and fittings are not included
  • Stiff from the coil, so tight bends kink it
  • Specification also prints 1 inch outside diameter and 1 inch wall
  • No WRAS number; a UK review preferred cheaper blue pipe in the same connectors

Best for: A Gardena sprinkler or pipeline main of about 50 m, if you buy the connectors separately and cut the end square.

Less suitable: A new drinking-water service to the house, a 1/4 inch fridge, or a tight corner you hoped the pipe would follow without an elbow.

Common questions

Can this coil go underground?

The listing says the pipe can be laid above or below ground and claims it is UV stabilised. It does not print a WRAS number.

Are the connectors in the box?

Included components says no. The scope line is one 50 m pipe.

Why do the measurements disagree?

The title says 25 mm outside diameter and 50 m. The specification block also prints 1 inch outside diameter and 1 inch nominal wall thickness. Those lines are both on the capture.

ilauke 15 m supply tube with fittings

Rank 2

ilauke 15 m supply tube with fittings

∼£14

Our view

The ilauke set is 15 metres of 6 mm tube, a 2 mm wall, a cutter and a box of 1/4 inch fittings, at £13.99, with 5 bar printed on the listing. It carries 4.7 from 168 reviews. UK reviewers used that length from an LG filter to the sink and on an American-style fridge. The specification row says POM and a bullet says PE. The same bullet names NSF, WQA and WRAS with no approval number, so those words are a claim, not a directory entry. UK reviews also say there are only a couple of blue clips, and one buyer returned the set because the fridge nut had no olive. Another UK review found the house-supply connector was not the thread on their tap.

Pros

  • 15 m, 6 mm outside, 2 mm wall and 5 bar printed
  • Cutter and 1/4 inch fittings at £13.99
  • 4.7 from 168 reviews
  • UK reviews that reached an LG filter and an American-style fridge

Cons

  • Specification says POM and a bullet says PE
  • NSF, WQA and WRAS named with no number
  • Too few locking clips, and a fridge nut returned for a missing olive
  • House connector did not match one UK tap thread

Best for: A cold 1/4 inch run of about 15 m, when you check the olive and the tap thread before you close the cupboard.

Less suitable: A buried 25 mm service, hot water, or anyone who needs a WRAS number you can look up.

Common questions

Will this reach a fridge along a run of cupboards?

The listing states 15 m at 6 mm outside diameter. UK reviews use that length for an LG filter and an American-style fridge. One UK review says the house-supply connector was not the thread they needed.

What is the pipe made of?

The specification row says POM. A bullet says PE tubing and claims NSF, WQA and WRAS with no approval number. Those lines are not the same.

Does every joint get a locking clip?

UK reviews say there are only a couple of blue clips, not one for every connector. One UK review returned the set because the fridge nut had no olive.

Qrity 1/4 inch PE tube, 2 m

Rank 3

Qrity 1/4 inch PE tube, 2 m

Our view

The Qrity 1/4 inch tube is 2 metres of PE at £7.99, with a size line of 6.35 mm and no fittings in the package. Across 20 amazon.co.uk reviews, rated 4.5, reviewers who like it say the wall stays round and does not kink, and a US review seated it in 1/4 inch push-fit and compression fittings. The one UK review measured a bore of about 2–3 mm and found it too narrow to siphon between containers, which matters if you expected a garden hose. An Italian review measured 6 mm outside against a 6.5 mm pack label, and the dimensions line also prints 0.6 cm, so check the end before you buy matching fittings. There is no pressure figure and no WRAS number. At 40 g it is a short cold-water spare, not a buried supply.

Pros

  • 2 m at £7.99 with a 6.35 mm size line
  • 4.5 from 20 reviews, with comments that it does not kink
  • PE named in the bullets
  • A US review cut it to length and seated push-fit fittings

Cons

  • No fittings in the box
  • UK review: bore about 2–3 mm, too narrow to siphon
  • No pressure figure and no approval number
  • One review’s outside diameter did not match the pack label

Best for: A 2 m spare for a 1/4 inch cold fridge or filter line, when you already own the fittings.

Less suitable: A buried drinking-water service, or any job that needs a wide bore or a pressure figure on the listing.

Common questions

Can this 2 m tube feed a fridge?

The listing names refrigerators, ice makers and reverse-osmosis systems. It does not name a fridge model. A UK review describes a hard tube with a bore of about 2–3 mm.

Are fittings included?

The package line is 2 metres of PE hose. No fittings are listed.

What outside diameter is printed?

The size line says 6.35 mm. The dimensions line also prints 200 x 0.6 x 0.1 cm. There is no separate wall thickness.

GREDIA 3/8 inch tube and fittings, 5 m

Rank 4

GREDIA 3/8 inch tube and fittings, 5 m

∼£14

Our view

The GREDIA box is 5 metres of 3/8 inch tube, a cutter and ten push-fit fittings, two each of a ball valve, elbow, Y, straight and tee, at £13.99. The star line is 4.3 from 227 reviews. UK buyers use the length for a filter change or a short RO repair, and one UK review says the parts held 80 psi on an RO/DI filter. The same UK file includes a cutter that snapped on first use, and a coffee-machine install where every fitting was replaced with John Guest. Shut-off valves and elbows weep in reviews from outside the UK as well. The material row lists PE and PVC, while a bullet says food-grade polyethylene, with no approval number. There is no 3/8-to-1/4 reducer in the pack.

Pros

  • 5 m plus ten 3/8 inch push-fit fittings and a cutter for £13.99
  • 4.3 from 227 reviews
  • Wall stated at 1.5 mm
  • UK reviews that finished a filter or RO repair with the spare fittings

Cons

  • Cutter snapped in a UK review
  • Fittings replaced with John Guest after leaks
  • No 3/8 inch to 1/4 inch reducer
  • PE and PVC on one row, and food-grade with no approval number

Best for: A 3/8 inch cold filter or RO run of about 5 m, if you pressure-test every joint and you can replace a weak cutter.

Less suitable: A 1/4 inch fridge inlet, or a drinking-water install that needs a WRAS number.

Common questions

Are the fittings push-fit?

The listing says quick-connect push-fit and no tools. UK reviews include a cutter that snapped and fittings that were replaced with John Guest.

Does it step down from 3/8 inch to 1/4 inch?

The pack list is 3/8 inch fittings only. A review notes there is no 3/8 to 1/4 reducing coupling.

Is food-grade the same as a WRAS number?

The bullet says food-grade polyethylene. The capture does not print a WRAS number or a temperature limit.

Qrity 3/8 inch PE tube, 2 m

Rank 5

Qrity 3/8 inch PE tube, 2 m

Our view

This Qrity listing is 2 metres of white polyethylene at £7.99, stated as 3/8 inch, with no millimetre outside diameter and no fittings. The star line is 4.0 from 17 reviews. The only UK review in the file uses the tube as a low-pressure air line: it routed without kinking, held in push-fit connectors, and cut with a utility knife. A Spanish review reports an RO system and a fridge dispenser, and also calls the price high for the length. A French review calls the diameter small and the tube rigid. There is no pressure number on the specification block. A US mention of 230 psi is a review, not a listing rating. Two metres will not cross a long run of kitchen units.

Pros

  • Material row says polyethylene
  • 2 m at £7.99
  • UK review: routed without kinking on push-fit connectors
  • 3/8 inch stated on the size line

Cons

  • No millimetre outside diameter and no wall thickness
  • No fittings in the box
  • Only 17 reviews, and the UK text is an air line
  • 2 m is short for a fridge pulled out along a run of units

Best for: A short 3/8 inch spare when you already have the connectors and you only need 2 m.

Less suitable: A 1/4 inch fridge inlet, a buried main, or anyone who needs a printed pressure rating.

Common questions

Is this the same pipe as the 1/4 inch Qrity tube?

No. This listing states 3/8 inch and polyethylene, at the same £7.99 for 2 m. It does not print a millimetre outside diameter.

Does the box include fittings?

The package line is 2 metres of PE hose. No fittings are listed.

Can it be used on a fridge?

The bullets name refrigerators and ice makers. The captured UK review uses the tube as a low-pressure air line, not as a measured drinking-water install.

B2C black LDPE tube, 16 mm

Rank 6

B2C black LDPE tube, 16 mm

∼£36

Our view

The B2C coil is black LDPE, 16 mm outside, with a title inside diameter of 13 mm, a 1.5 mm wall and PN6, at £36.28. The title says 50 metres. The specification says the item length is 1 metre. All the review texts in the file are tagged United Kingdom, at 3.9 from 50, and several call it fair value against branded micro-irrigation tube when they received a usable length. Those same reviews say the wall is solid, so it will not drip along a bed, and that it kinks if you try to zig-zag it. Fittings pop out or leak: one review measured a 14 mm bore, and one could not seal a Hozelock fitting. Buy it only after you decide which length line you are paying for.

Pros

  • 16 mm outside, 1.5 mm wall and PN6 printed
  • LDPE named as one material
  • UK reviews that used it as a solid supply on a micro-irrigation system
  • £36.28 if the 50 m title is what arrives

Cons

  • Title says 50 m and the specification says 1 m
  • Solid wall, so it is not a soaker
  • Kinks on bends
  • 13 mm fittings leak or pop out; one bore measured 14 mm

Best for: A solid 16 mm garden distribution tube, after you confirm the coil length and buy fittings that match the bore you measure.

Less suitable: A drip-along-the-bed soaker, a drinking-water main, or a tight zig-zag bed.

Common questions

Does this pipe drip along a bed?

UK reviews say the wall is solid. It is a connecting tube. It is not described as porous.

How long is the coil?

The title says 50 metres inside a 1 m to 100 m range. The specification line says item length 1 metre. Both figures are on the capture.

Will 13 mm fittings seal?

The title says 13 mm inside diameter. UK reviews report fittings that pop out or leak, and one review says the bore measured 14 mm.

NONDK black PE tube, 12 mm

Rank 7

NONDK black PE tube, 12 mm

Our view

The NONDK listing prints a black PE tube at 12 mm outside, 9 mm inside and a 1.5 mm wall, priced at £9.09. The only length named in the bullet is 10 m, inside a sentence that says two lengths are available and then stops. The pack is 436 g and 22 × 7 × 7 cm. The technical block also prints battery and power-source fields that do not describe a hose. There is no star line and no review text on the capture, so durability, UV life and whether 3/8 inch connectors actually grip are untested here. The bullet says the tube handles a large pressure and does not give a bar or PN figure. It is hose only: no emitters, no timer and no drinking-water number.

Pros

  • 12 mm outside, 9 mm inside and a 1.5 mm wall all printed
  • £9.09
  • Black PE aimed at drip or sprinkler fittings
  • Hose only, so the price is not a fittings kit

Cons

  • No reviews and no star line
  • Length sentence names 10 m and no second length
  • No pressure number
  • Battery and power-source fields on a hose listing

Best for: A 12 mm black tube for 3/8 inch irrigation connectors, if you measure the coil when it arrives.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs reviews, a confirmed length, or a drinking-water approval.

How we compared

Seven amazon.co.uk listings are scored from 0 to 100. Stars count up to 35, the review count up to 20, checkable print up to 20, the box and UK use up to 15, and price for the job up to 10. No pipe was laboratory-tested for pressure, bore or a drinking-water approval. Deductions apply only where the score note names them: a thin review file, no reviews, fittings that leak or pop out, a snapped cutter, or a fridge nut returned with no olive.

PE pipe buying guide

Start with the job, then the outside diameter, then the pressure figure that is actually printed. A fridge tube, a 16 mm bed and a 25 mm coil do not answer the same question. Blue service pipe for buried drinking water is PE80 or PE100 to BS EN 12201, with a WRAS number, and it is not one of the seven rows. Black tube in this set is for the garden. Short tube is for a cold appliance. PEX and yellow gas PE stay off this table.

What PE pipe means in the UK

PE pipe in the UK is three buys that share a name. Blue PE80 or PE100 service pipe is for buried cold drinking water, and shops still call that MDPE. Black PE or LDPE is for the garden. Short 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch tube is for a fridge or a filter. PEX is the hot-and-cold plumbing plastic. Yellow PE is gas pipe. You judge drinking-water pipe by BS EN 12201, PE80 or PE100, SDR or PN, outside diameter and a WRAS number.

Best for

  • A gardener matching black 12–25 mm tube to the fittings already on the system
  • A kitchen fitter replacing a cold 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch fridge or filter line

Not ideal for

  • A buried wholesome supply that needs blue PE80 or PE100 and a WRAS number you can look up
  • Hot water, yellow gas pipe, or a soaker that has to drip along a bed

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Mixing diameters that share the name PE

About 6 mm, 16 mm and 25 mm are all in this set, and they are not substitutes. A 1/4 inch fridge tube will not feed a Gardena sprinkler connector. A 16 mm pipe with a stated 13 mm bore does not take every fitting sold as 13 mm.

  2. 2

Treating food grade or WRAS as an approval number

WRAS approval is a named product against BS 6920, for a stated maximum temperature, for up to five years. A bullet that says food grade, or that names WRAS with no number, is a claim. None of these seven listings was checked here as BS EN 12201 pipe.

  3. 3

Paying before the title and the specification agree

B2C’s title says 50 metres and the specification says 1 metre. Gardena’s title says 25 mm outside diameter and the specification also prints 1 inch outside diameter and 1 inch wall. ilauke’s specification says POM and a bullet says PE. Do not average those lines.

What to weigh up

Job and outside diameter

High

Name the job before you compare a price. Buried wholesome water, a non-potable garden branch, and a cold appliance are different pipes. Outside diameters in this set run from about 6 mm to 25 mm. A 6 mm fridge tube does not replace a 25 mm coil, and a 16 mm garden tube does not replace either. Blue service pipe, which is not an ASIN on this page, is often 20 mm, 25 mm or 32 mm outside diameter. Trade pages treat 25 mm as the usual house service. Match the outside diameter to the fitting.

Drinking-water claims, pressure and conflicts

High

For drinking water, require a WRAS number and BS EN 12201. WRAS approval is a named product against BS 6920, for a stated maximum temperature, for up to five years. Food grade, or the word WRAS with no number, is only a claim. ilauke’s bullet names NSF, WQA and WRAS with no approval number, and the specification row says POM while a bullet says PE. GREDIA’s bullet says food-grade polyethylene, the material row lists PE and PVC, and the capture prints no WRAS number.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Sprinkler or pipeline coil

You want about 50 m of black polyethylene for a Gardena sprinkler or pipeline, with 25 mm in the title and 6 bar printed. Buy the connectors separately and cut the end square. This is not a checked drinking-water service, and the specification also prints 1 inch outside diameter.

Cold fridge or filter run

You need about 15 m of 6 mm tube, a cutter and 1/4 inch fittings for a cold fridge or filter. UK reviews used this length on an LG filter and an American-style fridge. Check the olive and the tap thread. The WRAS words have no approval number, and the specification says POM while a bullet says PE.

3/8 inch kit with fittings

You want about 5 m of 3/8 inch tube with ten push-fit fittings and a cutter, at the same about £13.99. Pressure-test every joint. A UK review snapped the cutter, and another replaced the fittings with John Guest. There is no 3/8 inch to 1/4 inch reducer in the pack.

Common questions about PE pipes

Which PE pipe is the top pick in this comparison?
The Gardena 2701-20 is the top pick for a sprinkler or pipeline coil, not for every job that uses the words PE pipe. It is black polyethylene, 25 mm in the title, 50 m, with 6 bar printed, at about £96.95. The star line is 4.7 from 1,837 reviews. Fittings are not included. The specification also prints 1 inch outside diameter and 1 inch wall, and there is no WRAS number. A buried drinking-water service is blue PE80 or PE100 to BS EN 12201, which is not this coil.
How much does PE pipe cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this set the shelf prices are about £7.99 for 2 m of Qrity tube, about £9.09 for NONDK, about £13.99 for the GREDIA kit and the ilauke 15 m set, about £36.28 for B2C, and about £96.95 for 50 m of Gardena. The B2C title says 50 m and the specification says 1 m, so the price per metre depends on which line arrives. A trade blue 25 mm coil is not an ASIN here. Screwfix shows 25 mm × 50 m at £53.99 and £55.99 including VAT.
Are these listings blue MDPE service pipe?
No. Blue service pipe is PE80 or PE100 to BS EN 12201, often 20 mm, 25 mm or 32 mm outside diameter. Trade pages treat 25 mm as the usual house service. Blue marks buried potable water and is not the UV-stable colour for above ground. The seven listings here are small-bore tube, black 12 mm and 16 mm coil, a fittings kit, and Gardena 25 mm × 50 m. None prints a WRAS approval number. Food grade, or the word WRAS without a number, is only a claim.
What outside diameter should I match?
Match the fitting to the outside diameter printed for that job. About 6 mm, 6.35 mm, 3/8 inch, 12 mm, 16 mm and 25 mm appear in this set, and they are not substitutes. A 16 mm pipe with a stated 13 mm bore does not take every fitting sold as 13 mm. One B2C review measured a 14 mm bore and could not seal a Hozelock fitting. The Qrity 1/4 inch listing prints 6.35 mm. A UK review of that tube measured a bore of about 2–3 mm.
How deep should a buried water pipe be?
The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require enough cover to stop a buried fitting freezing. Water Regs UK says 750 mm to 1,350 mm, with notification outside that band, from the boundary stop tap to the tap. The same body of guidance cites the Scotland 2014 byelaws and the Northern Ireland 2009 regulations. Ordinary PE can be permeated by fuel, so contaminated ground is a reason to call a professional, not a reason to reuse garden tube. This page did not measure cover on any listing.
Should I use PE pipe or PVC for garden water?
Black PE or LDPE in this set is a solid garden tube: Gardena at 25 mm, B2C LDPE at 16 mm with PN6, and NONDK at 12 mm outside. Solid LDPE will not drip along a bed. PVC is a different pipe, with its own diameters and solvent joints. The PVC pipe comparison is the place for that material. Do not treat a PE coil and a PVC waste or pressure pipe as the same fitting.
Can I install yellow gas pipe or the water-company side myself?
Gas work under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 must be competent, and work done as a business must be Gas Safe registered. Yellow PE is gas pipe. Do not cut or bury it as a water job. On the water side, call a professional for the undertaker’s side of the stop tap, for cover outside 750–1,350 mm, for ground that may be contaminated, and for a joint that has already leaked into a wall or a flat below. A householder’s side of a new cold supply still needs the water company’s size and a WRAS number.
What should I check on the listing before I pay?
Read pressure only as printed. Gardena states 6 bar and also 87 psi. B2C states PN6. ilauke states 5 bar. The Qrity tubes, GREDIA and NONDK do not print a bar or PN figure. Resolve conflicts before you pay. B2C’s title says 50 metres and the specification says 1 metre. Gardena’s title says 25 mm outside diameter and the specification also prints 1 inch. ilauke’s specification says POM and a bullet says PE. Do not average those lines. Nothing kept here is hot-water pipe.

Our verdict

The Gardena 2701-20 is the top pick for a sprinkler or pipeline coil: 25 mm in the title, 50 m, 6 bar printed, and 4.7 from 1,837 reviews. Push the pipe fully home on a buried garden run. It is not a checked drinking-water service, fittings are extra, and the specification also prints 1 inch outside diameter and 1 inch wall. The ilauke 15 m kit is the best value at about £13.99, with 6 mm outside, a 2 mm wall, 5 bar and 1/4 inch fittings. UK reviews reached an LG filter and an American-style fridge. Check the olive and the tap thread, and do not treat the WRAS wording as a number you can look up. The other rows are shorter tube, a 3/8 inch kit, or black irrigation coil with a length or review gap.
