How to join PE pipe: square cut, insert, hard stop

Updated: October 2026

You have a coil or a short fridge tube, and you want the joint to stay dry. How to join PE pipe depends on which pipe you are holding. A 25 mm service pipe takes a liner. A 1/4 inch tube takes a small push-fit and, where the nut expects one, an olive. Soft 16 mm pipe takes a barb that matches the bore you measured. Diameters and prices for the coils in this set are on the [PE pipe comparison](/hub/rods-and-pipes/pe-pipe). A purchase through those links can earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Cut the end square

John Guest’s MDPE guide says cut square without crushing, then chamfer, fit the insert flush, mark the depth, push to a hard stop and tighten firmly. Pipestock uses the same opening for compression and push-fit. The 16 bar and WRAS lines on that page belong to those fittings, not to Gardena’s 6 bar bullet. A hacksaw is only acceptable if the end is then square and deburred. A rough end damages seals. On Gardena reviews, a knife or an angle grinder leaves a poor end. On the GREDIA kit, a UK review says the included cutter snapped and the blade came out on first use. If that cutter fails, use another. Do not force a chewed end into the O-ring. Support the bore on a short offcut. An ilauke UK review says the small cutters struggle unless the bore is supported. Which pipe you should be holding is the PE pipe buying guide.

MDPE compression and push-fit

This sequence is for 20 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm, the sizes John Guest names for inserts, not for 6 mm tube. Push the insert in flush, chamfer the outside edge, push to the hard stop, and tighten firmly. There is no universal turn count to copy onto every brand. United Civils notes that potable compression fittings should be suitable under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, and names BS EN ISO 17885 for mechanical PE fittings. That is a requirement on the fitting you buy for drinking water, not a sticker on a garden connector. The Gardena 25 mm coil uses its own connectors, bought separately. It kinks if you force a tight bend, so elbows are for the corners. One UK reviewer used a hot-air gun to coax a bend. That is a review, not a listed method, and heat can flatten the bore.

Small tube and soft irrigation pipe

On 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch push-fit, cut square and push to the stop. ilauke’s UK reviews include a fridge nut with no olive, and only a couple of blue clips. A missing olive is a return, not a nut you tighten harder. GREDIA’s pack is 3/8 inch only, with no reducer to 1/4 inch. Do not sleeve one tube inside the other. Soft 16 mm LDPE fails at the barb. B2C’s UK reviews say 13 mm fittings leak or pop out, and one bore measured 14 mm. Tug the fitting with the water off, then run the water before you bury the joint. The Qrity 1/4 inch tube does not kink easily, and a UK review found a bore of about 2–3 mm. The 15 mm tee and the tap thread are on PE pipe for a fridge.

Where you stop

Stop when the pipe is the water company’s side of the boundary stop tap, when the cover cannot sit between 750 mm and 1,350 mm, or when the ground may be contaminated. Ordinary PE can be permeated by fuel. The answer is barrier pipe, not a second attempt with the same fitting. Stop when a joint has already leaked into a wall or a flat below. Stop for any gas fitting. Yellow PE is not a water method. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require competence, and work done as a business has to be Gas Safe registered. This page does not teach electrofusion or a gas joint. If the fitting in your hand disagrees with the sequence above, follow that fitting and keep the square cut.

Common questions

Do you need a pipe insert on MDPE?
On 20 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm, John Guest recommends an insert, pushed in flush, so the wall does not collapse under the nut. A 6 mm fridge tube is not that size. Do not hunt for a 25 mm liner to stiffen a 1/4 inch push-fit.
How far should the pipe go into the joint?
To the hard stop, past the O-ring on a fitting made for that pipe. Mark the depth first. Gardena reviews blame leaks on a pipe that was not pushed fully home. Firmly is John Guest’s word for the nut. It is not a turn count for every brand.
Why do 16 mm irrigation fittings pop out?
The bore and the wall do not match the barb. On the B2C coil, UK reviews report 13 mm fittings that leak or pop out, and one measured bore of about 14 mm. Test one fitting on the pipe you received before you fit a whole bed.
What is different about a 1/4 inch fridge push-fit?
The cut is still square, and the pipe still has to reach the stop. The extra faults are a fridge nut with no olive, too few clips, and no reducer from 3/8 inch to 1/4 inch. A 25 mm liner is the wrong part. The valve on the 15 mm pipe is on the fridge page.
Does this page cover yellow gas pipe?
No. Yellow PE is gas pipe. You do not cut it or adapt it to a water fitting. Competence is required under the 1998 regulations, and a business has to be Gas Safe registered. If the pipe in the trench is yellow, stop.
