Mini greenhouse for a balcony

Updated: October 2026

You have a flat, a lease, and a balcony that looks wide enough in a photograph of a four-tier rack. A mini greenhouse for a balcony is a sail of film on a floor the building, not a garden centre, has rated. Products Compared checked the nine amazon.co.uk listings in the [mini greenhouse comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/mini-greenhouse) on 16 October 2026, plus the RHS pages on roof gardens and the Leasehold Advisory Service note on alterations. We did not measure your slab, and there is no universal kilogram-per-square-metre figure to hand you. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. English Class E rights for a greenhouse in a householder’s garden do not belong to a flat.

Depth before brand

Most shelf houses in this set are about 40–50 cm deep. That is the number to mark on the balcony before you care which logo is on the cover. JUNGLE STONE and the VOUNOT four-tier are about 49 cm deep and about 158–160 cm tall, around 69 cm wide, though JUNGLE STONE also prints 64 cm. The extra-wide DIVCHI is still 45 cm deep, but it is 105 cm wide and 160 cm tall. The VOUNOT tunnel is 270 × 90 × 90 cm. It is a bed cover. On most balconies it is the wrong shape: too long, 90 cm deep, and no shelves.

Wind on an upper floor

The RHS treats wind and sun as the dominant facts on a balcony or roof, and it says weight limits are strict and specific to the building. A film rack is a sail. The frames in this set that print a credible weight are a few kilograms: Ohuhu 3 kg, the VOUNOT four-tier 4.1 kg, JUNGLE STONE 4.5 kg. Ohuhu is the only listing that states wheels. UK reviews like moving it, and they also say the brakes are poor. They do not pin a 162 cm cover to a balcony in a gust. How to weight a frame on soil or slabs belongs with the habits on the how to use page.

Lease, fixing, and the escape route

The lease decides what you may do where the landlord controls that part of the building. The Leasehold Advisory Service makes that the starting point for alterations. A freestanding cover that is not fixed to the fabric is not the same step as drilling the wall or the railing. It can still be forbidden. If the lease is silent, silence is not a yes. Do not drill the railing because a guy-line would make the house feel safer. Balcony Grower, writing for people growing on balconies, makes the same practical point: wind destroys light houses, and drilling needs consent. Approved Document A is about structure. It does not publish one load that every UK balcony shares.

Where the weight sits

The RHS says heavy containers on a balcony or roof belong near the structure that can carry them, not out on the weakest edge, and that you ask what the design load is. Compost, water, and pots dwarf the 3–4.5 kg frame. A shelf stated at 10 kg or 15 kg is the seller’s limit for that shelf, not the balcony’s limit. Put the heavy pots low. High weight tips a narrow rack. On a balcony, a falling pot is over the edge or onto the walkway. If the agent cannot tell you the design load, do not invent one from a forum and then fill four shelves.

Common questions

Do I need the landlord’s permission?
You need to know what the lease allows before you fix anything, and often before you leave a tall cover in place. A freestanding rack is not automatically an alteration, and it is not automatically allowed. Written consent is the clean record. A verbal “should be fine” from a neighbour is not the landlord.
Can I drill the railing?
Only with consent from whoever controls that part of the building, and only with a fixing that suits the railing. A film house does not justify a hole you cannot make good. If consent is refused, you do not drill a smaller hole. You leave the house off the balcony or you use a freestanding weight the lease also allows.
How heavy is too heavy?
There is no single legal number for every UK balcony. The RHS says the limit is strict and belongs to that building, and that heavy pots should sit near the structure. Ask the managing agent for the design load. Do not copy a shop’s kilogram-per-square-metre range into your plans. The frame itself is only a few kilograms. The compost is the load.
Is the 270 cm tunnel a balcony product?
Not for a typical flat balcony. It is 270 × 90 × 90 cm, built as a row cover, with stakes in the bullets for soil. A long terrace that is genuinely yours to use is a different site, and the lease still applies. Shelves in the 45–50 cm depth are the listings to discuss first.
Should the heavy pots go on the top shelf?
No. High weight tips a light, narrow rack, and a pot that falls on a balcony has somewhere worse to land than a patio. Use the lower shelf for anything heavy, and keep the upper shelves for trays and small herbs. A stated 10 kg or 15 kg is the seller’s shelf line, not permission to load the top.
What if the lease is silent?
Ask. Silence is not consent to drill, and it may not be consent to store a tall cover on a shared balcony. Put the question to the landlord or the agent in writing, including the size and that you will not fix it to the wall unless they agree. If they will not answer, do not guess your way into a dispute with a 160 cm sail already assembled.
