Indoor greenhouse with grow lights

Updated: 21 October 2026

The seedlings are leaning toward a grey window, and a plain plastic cover has only made the lean warmer. An indoor greenhouse with grow lights is the right spend when that room stays dull, and a wasted one when the sill is already bright. This page is the lamp decision, beside the full [indoor greenhouse comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/indoor-greenhouse). Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk listings exported on 20 October 2026 and public UK plug guidance. There was no light meter reading. When a sunny sill is enough

Stand in the room at midday and look at the shadow. A south-facing window in March and April throws enough light for many UK seedlings. A clear cover there is a humidity tent. Gardeners' World places small indoor houses in good sunlight for herbs and tender plants. If your sill already does that job, a lighted frame at about £79.99 is buying a timer you may never need. A north-facing flat or a blocked window will not get daylight from a cover. Seedlings that stretch within a week are short of light. Sowing steps sit on the indoor greenhouse for seedlings page. Which? notes that some mini greenhouses include built-in grow lights, which is true of two listings here and false of the plain PVC tents. Wider criteria sit on the indoor greenhouse buying guide.

What the lighted models include

Barrina’s CX92Z states 72 W and 5000 K on a four-tier. The bullets describe four 35 cm LED bars, a timer, a hygro-thermometer, and a PPFD of 464 µmol/m²/s at 10 cm. That PPFD is the manufacturer’s claim, not a reading taken here. The price is about £79.99, with 4.5 from 11 reviews. Dimensions, cover, frame, and plug type are not in the technical block. Skip it if you need a printed footprint. Bamworld is about £36.99, with 4.4 from 61 reviews, a polyethylene cover, and a wood frame. The bullets describe three modes, including 3000 K and a 660 nm mode. Those are listing descriptions, not a spectrum test. The technical size is 32 by 16 by 44 cm, and the shelf bullets disagree. A bullet states 38 lb per shelf. The plug is not stated.

Timers and how long the lights run

Plants need a dark period. Leaving bars on all night is not endorsed here. Barrina’s timer lets you set an off time. Bamworld’s listing describes modes, not a full timetable. You still need a routine, even if that is a plug-in timer you add yourself. This comparison does not publish a tested hour count. A gardener’s rule of thumb for many fruiting seedlings is a long day, often in the mid-teens of hours, with darkness overnight. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a figure from these listings. Long pale stems mean too little light, a lamp too far away, or a cover on a north window. LEDs do not replace daylight for every crop. The 5000 K title on Barrina is a colour claim, not a promise that any plant will crop.

UK plug and lead checks

Check the plug before you trust the lamp. Neither the Barrina nor the Bamworld raw file states the plug type. UK homes are nominally 230 V. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35, require mains equipment for a BS 1363 socket to carry a correct UK plug or an approved conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Electrical Safety First’s guidance is to look at the plug and the fuse. A two-pin lead in a UK socket is a stop. Switch an unsafe lead off and leave it off.

Who should skip integrated lights

Skip the lighted models if the conservatory or the south window already grows sturdy seedlings in a clear cover. You would be paying for Barrina’s kit at about £79.99, or Bamworld’s stand at about £36.99, to duplicate the sun. The DIVCHI four-tier at about £17.29 is the top pick in this set for shelves and review volume, and it has no lamp. The two-tier at about £14.29 is the best value only when two short shelves are enough. Neither needs a socket. Which kit fits which job, beyond the lamp, is on the best indoor greenhouse page.

Common questions

Do I need grow lights in a north-facing flat?
Often, yes, if seedlings lean within a week and you have no brighter window. A PVC cover holds humidity there and does not add sun. A south-facing sill in spring is a different flat: many sowings cope without LEDs. Barrina and Bamworld are the integrated options in this set. Their plugs are not stated, so confirm a BS 1363 plug. A plain tent is enough when the daylight is already doing the work.
How does Barrina compare with a lamp on a plain tent?
Barrina puts four bars, a timer, and a hygro-thermometer in one listing at about £79.99, with only 11 reviews and no printed footprint. A DIVCHI or Ohuhu cover is cheaper and has no light, so you add a lamp you can already vouch for. Do not copy an uncertified strip from a review photo. Either path still needs a correct UK plug. Choose Barrina for the bundled timer. Choose a plain tent when you already own a safe lamp and want the shelf unit at about £17.
Is the UK plug included and safe?
The raw files do not say. You have to look at the lead that arrives. Mains equipment for a UK socket needs a BS 1363 plug or an approved conversion with a BS 1362 fuse. That is the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35. If you get a two-pin plug, stop. Do not run the bars through a loose adapter. A competent person should deal with a lead you are not happy to use.
Will LEDs stop leggy seedlings?
They can, when the lean is caused by a dull room and you give a daily dark period. They will not fix a tray that is sealed, overwatered, and far from the bars. LEDs do not replace daylight for every crop, and the Barrina PPFD line is a listing claim at 10 cm, not a test from this comparison. Watch the stems after a week. Stockier growth means the setup is helping. A continued lean means the light, the distance, or the hours are still wrong.
Can I leave the lights on all night?
No. Seedlings need darkness as well as light. An all-night run is extra heat, extra cost, and a poor habit. Use Barrina’s timer or your own timer so the bars go off. A set titled at 72 W uses about one kilowatt-hour in 14 hours. That is arithmetic from the title, not a quoted bill. Moisture and a live lamp are a worse mix than a dark shelf. If the tent is dripping onto a bar, unplug it.
