Indoor greenhouse for seedlings

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a packet of tomatoes or chillies, a windowsill that already holds last year’s pots, and a question about cover. An indoor greenhouse for seedlings is worth it when you need several trays in moist air, and it is a nuisance when one propagator lid would do. The models themselves are in our [indoor greenhouse comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/indoor-greenhouse). Peter F. used Royal Horticultural Society guidance and the amazon.co.uk notes in this set, from the 20 October 2026 export. There was no trial bed. A propagator lid or a tiered tent

A windowsill propagator is a tray and a lid. It holds humidity for one sowing, then you lift the lid. A tiered indoor greenhouse is shelves, a zip, and air that stays damp if you forget the door. The RHS says mini greenhouses are often better than a bare windowsill for raising seedlings, and that the shelves shade the tier below. Pick the lid for one or two trays on a bright window. Pick the tent when spring means several crops and you have floor space. The DIVCHI four-tier lists about 50 by 45 by 130 cm at about £17.29. The two-tier lists about 50 by 40 by 80 cm at about £14.29. An unheated plastic skin buffers a room. It does not hold a frost off a chilli if the room itself is cold. Measure the room first on the indoor greenhouse buying guide.

Sowing under the cover

Use fresh seed compost, firm it lightly, and sow thinly. Thick sowing is how damping off finds a mat of stems. The RHS links that disease to humidity, poor air, and seed that sits cold and wet. A zipped cover makes the humidity easy and the air worse. Water from below, then let the tray drain. Close the zip for germination if the room is cool, and open it to check moisture each day. Do not bake the tray in a south window with the door shut. The daily rhythm is on the how to use an indoor greenhouse page. Chillies and tomatoes both start this way in UK homes. A late sowing in a dull room stays small whatever the brand on the cover.

Growing on, and the shaded shelf

After the seed leaves open, the plants want light and less sealed air. Prick out before they tangle. The RHS is plain that a shelf blocks light to the one under it. Rotate trays every few days. If the bottom tray is always pale, it is a roof made of pots. UK reviews on the DIVCHI two-tier say tomato plants outgrow the two shelves quickly. At about 80 cm you do not have a long grow-on for a cordon tomato. The four-tier at about 130 cm gives more weeks. It is still not a fruiting greenhouse. Ohuhu’s bullets state 10 kg per shelf, which is not a promise that a mature tomato will be happy in a zip tent in June.

When light is the limit

A cover in a bright window can raise stocky plants. A cover in a north-facing flat often raises strings. Leggy seedlings are a light shortage, sometimes made worse by a closed skin that keeps them warm enough to grow and too dim to stand firm. Opening the zip helps the stems. It does not replace the sun. If the only place for the house is a dull corner, look at a model with LEDs or add a proper lamp, and read the indoor greenhouse with grow lights page before you spend about £79.99 on Barrina’s small review file.

Moving on and hardening off

Transplant when the roots hold the compost, not when the tent looks full. The two-tier’s tomato problem shows up here: the cover is already touching the tip. That is the moment to leave the tent. Chillies can stay in pots longer than tomatoes stay under an 80 cm zip, and they still need a bright place. Hardening off takes two to three weeks in the RHS account. The tent is not the last step. Increase outdoor time in a sheltered spot, and do not leave the zip shut for the whole fortnight. Nothing in this set is a stated frost cover. If your last frost is still ahead, wait.

Common questions

Is a tiered greenhouse better than a windowsill propagator?
It is better when you have several trays and you will open the zip. The RHS prefers a mini greenhouse to a bare sill for raising seedlings, with the drawback that shelves shade the lower tier. A propagator lid is better for one tray on a bright window, because it is easier to vent and it leaves the room alone. Buy the tent for volume. Buy the lid for a single sowing you will move on quickly.
When do tomatoes outgrow a two-tier house?
UK reviews on the DIVCHI two-tier, about 80 cm high, say tomato plants outgrow it quickly. Treat that house as a germination and early-pot stage, then move the plants. The four-tier at about 130 cm gives more height and still is not a summer fruiting house. If you know you will keep tomatoes under cover for many weeks, do not start with the two-tier to save about £3.
Can I start chillies in a mini greenhouse?
Yes, as a seed start in a warm room, with thin sowing and daily air after germination. Chillies need a long season in the UK, so the sowing date matters more than the brand of cover. A north-facing tent without extra light will make leggy plants. An unheated zip does not replace a warm propagator if your room is cold at night. The cover holds some humidity. It does not add weeks to a late sowing.
Do I need a grow light for seedlings?
You need extra light when the room is dull and the seedlings lean within days. A bright window is often enough in spring, and a plain PVC cover is then a humidity tool. Barrina and Bamworld are the lighted models in this set. Their plugs are not stated in the raw files, so check for a BS 1363 plug. Do not assume LEDs replace daylight for every crop.
Will the shelves shade the bottom tier?
Yes. That is a stated RHS drawback of shelved mini greenhouses. Put the plants that most need light on top, and rotate trays every few days. If the bottom stays thin and pale, move it up rather than closing the zip. Shade plus wet air is a good way to lose a tray. The tent did not fail at humidity. It failed at light on the lower shelf.
