Indoor greenhouse buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are in a flat or on a small porch with a tape measure. This indoor greenhouse buying guide starts with that space. The houses in our [indoor greenhouse comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/indoor-greenhouse) are covered shelves and one small box on amazon.co.uk, from about £14.29 to £79.99 in the export of 20 October 2026. Decide the job, then the footprint, then the cover, and only then a light and its plug. Peter F. read those listings and the UK review notes. This is not a lab test. If you buy through our amazon.co.uk links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are buying

An indoor greenhouse in this set is a small covered frame, not a glasshouse and not a heated propagator on its own. Most kept listings are a tubular stand, shelves, and a clear PVC or PE skin with a door you open by hand. The Royal Horticultural Society describes cheap mini greenhouses as useful for seedlings, and also as weakly ventilated, with shelves that shade the tier below. HavenlyCove is a polyethylene box with a magnetic door, listed at about £15.29, not a four-shelf tent. A propagator lid holds humidity for one tray, then it comes off. If you only need one tray for a fortnight, the tent is more furniture than you need. Sowing sits on the indoor greenhouse for seedlings page.

Footprint and tier count

Measure the floor and the ceiling before you fall for a tier count. The DIVCHI two-tier lists 50 by 40 by 80 cm. The four-tier lists 50 by 45 by 130 cm. The five-tier lists 59 by 45 by 175 cm. Ohuhu lists 69 by 48 by 162 cm. A 175 cm cover needs headroom above the zip. In a room with a low bulkhead, the two-tier is the one that still stands. Two tiers suit a short seed start. UK reviews on the two-tier say tomato plants outgrow it. Four tiers are the volume option at 130 cm. Five tiers buy height at about £23.99, with only 11 reviews. None of these listings state how many seed trays fit. Measure your tray against the printed shelf.

Cover, frame, and shelf load

PVC and polyethylene hold moisture, which is why a closed zip grows condensation. Cheap models vent by opening the door. The RHS treats still, wet air in a small volume as a mould risk. Nothing here is frost-rated. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 expect a cover to be safe in normal use. They do not turn a £17 tent into a storm shelter. The DIVCHI four-tier technical line says alloy steel. A detailed UK review says the tubes arrived as plastic. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should match the description. Do not paste that note onto every DIVCHI row. The five-tier does not state a frame. Ohuhu says 10 kg per shelf. Bamworld says 38 lb per shelf, about 17 kg, on a listing whose size lines disagree. Every other shelf load is not stated.

Lights and UK plugs

A bright south-facing window can run seedlings in a clear cover. A north-facing flat often cannot. Which? notes that some mini greenhouses include grow lights, which matches Barrina and Bamworld here and not the plain DIVCHI or Ohuhu skins. Pay for integrated LEDs when the room is dim. Skip them when the sill is already sunny. Barrina’s title states 72 W and 5000 K, with four 35 cm bars, a timer, and a hygro-thermometer, at about £79.99 and 4.5 from 11 reviews. Bamworld lists three LED modes at about £36.99. Neither raw file states the plug. It needs a BS 1363 plug, or an approved conversion with a BS 1362 fuse, before you switch it on. The lamp decision is on the indoor greenhouse with grow lights page.

Indoor, porch, or balcony

Indoors, the risks are heat, humidity, and a light frame. Keep the plastic off a radiator. Listings do not state a clearance. A porch against a wall is the RHS pattern. An open balcony is the hard case. Ohuhu reviews praise wheels, and they also warn that wind topples the house and the brakes are weak. A light PVC house needs weight and a tie outside. Do not treat “indoor and outdoor” in a title as a wind rating. If the cover, the plug, or a collapsed frame looks unsafe, stop using it. A competent person should see a mains lead that does not match a UK socket. Daily opening of the zip is on the how to use an indoor greenhouse page.

Common questions

How many tiers do I need for seed trays?
Match the height to the crop and the ceiling. The two-tier is about 80 cm and suits a short start, though UK reviews say tomatoes outgrow it. The four-tier is about 130 cm on a 50 by 45 cm footprint. The five-tier is about 175 cm and needs headroom. No listing states a tray count. Measure your tray against the printed shelf before you assume two or three will sit side by side.
What shelf load can I trust?
Only Ohuhu states 10 kg per shelf, and only Bamworld states 38 lb per shelf. The DIVCHI listings and HavenlyCove do not state a load. UK reviews on the four-tier describe mesh that bends under heavier pots. Treat an unstated shelf as a light seed-tray shelf. Wet compost in a large pot is a different job, and these pages do not give you a tested kilogram for it.
Is steel in the title enough?
No. The DIVCHI four-tier title and technical line point to a steel or alloy-steel frame, and a detailed UK review says the tubes were plastic. Read both. If the goods do not match the description, that is a Consumer Rights Act point, not a matter of taste. The five-tier does not state a frame material, so a steel assumption there is only a guess.
What plug should a grow light have in the UK?
A mains light for a UK socket needs a BS 1363 plug, or an approved conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Barrina and Bamworld do not state the plug in the raw files. Check the lead before you use it. Homes here are nominally 230 V. A two-pin lead is a buying problem, not a detail to ignore because the LEDs look bright in the photos.
Do I need wheels indoors?
Only if you will roll the house. Ohuhu is the only listing here that states wheels, at about £39.99. Reviews also say wind topples it outdoors and the brakes are weak. A house that stays in one corner does not need them. The DIVCHI four-tier is the simpler fixed shelf, with the cover and frame limits already described.
