Top pick: dobar Stecki pine 320 L – Highest amazon.co.uk star line in the set, 4.5 from 44, on a plug-in pine kit at about £86.63. Best value: dobar Lärchi larch 420 L – 420 litres at about £88.83, about 100 litres more than the pine for roughly £2. Updated October 2026.
A wooden compost bin is an outdoor timber kit for garden waste and raw kitchen scraps. You compare stated litres, whether a lid is in the box, whether you can reach the compost, and whether assembly needs tools. The Royal Horticultural Society says a useful bin keeps rain off, holds some warmth, drains and lets air in. Bins under 1 cubic metre still work, more slowly.
The score on each card is the star line, not a compost test. Saved review texts are from other countries, not a British winter. Capacity, a lid and access are set out in the [wood compost bin buying guide](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/compost-bin-wood/sub/compost-bin-wood-buying-guide).
Two dobar kits are plug-in boxes, pine at 320 litres and larch at 420 litres, and neither bullet list includes a lid. Two kits are spruce panel bins, 305 litres and 603 litres, and both package lines list an adjustable two-part lid plus hatches.

The dobar Stecki 58600FSCe is a plug-in pine kit about 78 cm square, listed at 320 litres, 14.7 kg and about £86.63. On amazon.co.uk it is 4.5 from 44 reviews, the highest star line in this set, which is why it is the top pick on this shortlist. The saved texts are from Italy, Spain and Germany, so they are not a record of a British winter. Reviewers often say the boards go together in a few minutes without tools, and one English-language text calls the timber good enough to order a second bin. A lid is not in the bullets or the included-components line, and one Italian reviewer bought a lid separately. Other texts describe grooves that did not match, two boards broken at the corners, and knotty timber. The listing does not say whether the pine is treated, and one reviewer reported warped boards after applying a preservative. The FSC line names European pine and prints no certificate code.
Pros
320 litres, about 78 cm square, at about £86.63
4.5 from 44 amazon.co.uk reviews, the highest star line here
Plug-in assembly; reviewers often finish in a few minutes
FSC pine claimed in the bullets
Gaps stated at 3.5–4 cm
Cons
No lid in the bullets or the included-components line
Saved reviews are from Italy, Spain and Germany
Grooves that did not match, and boards broken at the corners, in the saved texts
Treatment is not stated; one reviewer reported warping after a preservative
Best for: You want a square kit under £90 that the listing says goes together without tools, and you can add a cover yourself.
Less suitable: You need a lid or a hatch in the box, or you want review texts from the United Kingdom.
The dobar Lärchi 58630FSCe is a plug-in larch kit about 79 cm square, listed at 420 litres, 23 kg and about £88.83, with Estonia as the country of origin. That is about 100 litres more than the pine Stecki for roughly £2, which is why it is the best value once the pine already holds the top pick. amazon.co.uk shows 3.7 from 19 reviews. The five saved texts are from France and Germany, none from the United Kingdom. The French text calls assembly easy and notes raw wood against the photos. Other texts say thin slats unclip or arrive cracked, and one reviewer thought the bin was smaller than the stated size. Two reviewers say the manufacturer sent them back to Amazon. A lid is not listed, the page asks whether the wood is treated without answering, and the FSC line prints no certificate code. The bullets state gaps of 3.5 to 4 cm, and another paragraph on the same page says about 1.0 to 1.5 cm.
Pros
420 litres at about £88.83, about 100 litres more than the pine for roughly £2
Plug-in assembly with no tools stated
FSC larch claimed, origin Estonia
About 79 cm square, 23 kg
Cons
3.7 from 19 reviews, and the saved texts are from France and Germany
Thin slats that unclip, and cracked boards, in the saved texts
No lid listed, and treatment is not answered on the page
One reviewer said the bin was smaller than the stated size
Best for: You want the most stated litres under £90 and you accept a plug-in larch kit with no lid in the bullets.
Less suitable: You need a lid in the box, UK review texts, or boards the saved reviews do not describe as thin.
The SOCOME kit is listed at about £132.05 as a 95 gallon Canada cedar outdoor bin, with an outer size of 80 × 49.8 × 89.9 cm. The specification field says Wood, not cedar, and the file has no FSC or PEFC line. The listing does not say whether 95 gallons is a US gallon or an imperial gallon. amazon.co.uk shows 2.5 from 17 reviews, and every saved text says Reviewed in the United States. A pull-out door is claimed, and the bullets say assembly takes 15 to 30 minutes if you wear gloves. Those texts describe thin wood, staples, screws and holes that do not line up, and several say the lid will not stay square or loses a hinge. One text says a hinge came out of the bottom piece within a week. The specification weight is 11 kg and the bullets say 22.04 pounds, so the page does not agree with itself on weight. The bullets do not list a lid, even where those texts describe one.
Pros
Pull-out door claimed in the bullets
Outer size 80 × 49.8 × 89.9 cm at about £132.05
Assembly time stated as 15 to 30 minutes
Some United States texts say it holds leaves and grass
Cons
2.5 from 17 reviews, all saved texts from the United States
Title says cedar; the material field says Wood
Thin wood, staples, and hinge or lid trouble in the saved texts
95 gallons with the gallon type unnamed; weight lines disagree
Best for: You want a claimed pull-out door at a mid price and you will check the timber and the lid on arrival.
Less suitable: You need a stated cedar specification, a UK review, or a kit the saved texts do not call thin.
The Moutta Q/CB/305 is a spruce panel bin, 66 × 66 × 79 cm and 305 litres, listed at about £199, with 25 kg on the specification line and about 24 kg in the bullets. The package lists an adjustable two-part lid and four recycled plastic rods for the hatches, which neither dobar kit lists. The assembly and user guide is in French. amazon.co.uk shows 2.0 from 2 reviews, both from France, which is too small a sample to treat as a pattern. One text says the bin lacks rigidity even on a fixed surface and that the lid does not fit together. The other text is a request to cancel before shipping, not a comment on the timber. The bullets claim spruce from PEFC-certified French forests and print no licence code. Treatment is not stated, and the page does not answer whether the bin can be used all year.
Pros
305 litres with a two-part lid listed in the package
Hatches on recycled plastic rods
Footprint 66 × 66 cm, the smallest square here
PEFC spruce claimed in the bullets
Cons
About £199, with 2.0 from only 2 reviews, both from France
One text says the lid does not seat and the bin lacks rigidity
Assembly guide is in French
No licence code, and treatment is not stated
Best for: You need a lid and a hatch in the box, and a footprint nearer 66 cm than 90 cm, and you can follow a French guide.
Less suitable: You want a UK review record, an English guide, or a kit under £100.
The Moutta Q/CB/603 is the largest kit in this set, 92 × 92 × 79 cm and 603 litres, listed at about £249, with 34 kg on the specification line and about 33 kg in the bullets. The package lists an adjustable two-part lid, four panels and four recycled plastic rods for the hatches, and the assembly guide is in French. The bullets claim spruce from PEFC-certified French forests, small openings between the boards and natural thermal insulation, with no temperature figure and no licence code. The raw file has no customer-review line and no review texts, so there is no amazon.co.uk star rating to quote. Treatment is not stated, and the page does not answer whether it can be used all year. You pay the highest price here for the largest stated volume and a lid in the box, without a review record to show whether that lid seats. The two French texts on the 305 litre Moutta stay on that ASIN and are not a score for this one.
Pros
603 litres, the largest stated volume here
Two-part lid and hatches listed in the package
Footprint about 92 × 92 cm
PEFC spruce claimed, with small openings stated
Cons
About £249, the highest price in the set
No customer-review line and no review texts in the raw file
Assembly guide is in French
Insulation is claimed with no temperature figure; treatment is not stated
Best for: You have room for about 92 cm square, you want a lid in the box, and you can accept a kit with no review record.
Less suitable: You need stars, an English guide, or a price under £100.
Yes. The package line lists an adjustable two-part lid and four recycled plastic rods for the hatches.
What wood does the listing claim?
Spruce from PEFC-certified French forests. No licence code is printed in the raw file.
Is there a star rating in the raw file?
No. The raw file has no customer-review line and no review texts.
How we compared
Five wooden amazon.co.uk kits, read on 19 October 2026, are on this page. There is no laboratory compost trial. The score on each card is the star line scaled to 100: 4.5 becomes 90, 3.7 becomes 74, 2.5 becomes 50 and 2.0 becomes 40. A raw file with no customer-review line scores 0. That number is not a timber test. The top pick is the highest score, the dobar pine kit. Best value is the other kit under £90 with the most stated litres, the dobar larch at 420 litres and about £88.83. Saved review texts from other countries inform the notes. They do not change the UK star line.

Wood compost bin buying guide
Match the stated litres to the space you have, then check whether a lid and a way to empty the bin are in the box. A high star line on a foreign review text is not a British winter.
What is a wood compost bin?
A wooden compost bin is an outdoor timber kit for garden waste and raw kitchen scraps. The five listings on this page fall into three groups. Two dobar kits are plug-in boxes, pine at 320 litres and larch at 420 litres, and neither bullet list includes a lid. Two Moutta kits are spruce panel bins, 305 litres and 603 litres, and both package lines list an adjustable two-part lid plus hatches.
Best for
A square of ground with a steady volume of garden waste
A small plot that needs a lid and a footprint nearer 66 cm than 92 cm
Not ideal for
Anyone who needs the kit to replace the council food-waste collection
A buyer who treats an FSC or PEFC bullet as a checked certificate
Mistakes to avoid
1
Buying the species word and not the lid
FSC pine, FSC larch, PEFC spruce and a cedar title are claims. No licence code is in these files. Both Moutta kits list a lid. The dobar bullets do not.
2
Treating 320 litres as a hot cubic metre
The RHS says bins under 1 cubic metre still work, more slowly. Every kit here is under that size. A 6 to 12 month guide from Gardeners' World is not a finish time measured on these listings.
3
Reading foreign reviews as UK weather
The star lines are amazon.co.uk numbers. The saved texts are from Italy, Spain, Germany, France or the United States. The 603 litre file has no review line at all.
What to weigh up
Capacity and footprint
High
Kept sizes are 305, 320, 420 and 603 litres, plus one kit sold as 95 gallons with the gallon type unnamed. Footprints run from 66 × 66 cm to about 92 × 92 cm. The RHS says a bin under 1 cubic metre still works, more slowly. Every kit here is under that size. About 78 cm square is the pine. About 79 cm square is the larch. The SOCOME outer size is 80 × 49.8 × 89.9 cm. Do not order a cover from a gallon line until you know which gallon the listing means.
Lid, access and the timber claim
High
Both Moutta kits list a two-part lid and hatches on plastic rods. The dobar bullets list neither a lid nor a door. The SOCOME bullets claim a pull-out door and do not list a lid. dobar says no tools. The Moutta guide is in French. SOCOME states 15 to 30 minutes. FSC and PEFC bullets print no certificate code, and the cedar title is not the material field. No file states a preservative, a rot warranty or a service life.
Which option suits you?
Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Steady garden waste
You can spare a square of ground and you will add a cover yourself. The dobar Stecki pine kit is about £86.63, 320 litres, about 78 cm square, and the listing says it plugs together without tools. It is 4.5 from 44 reviews. No lid is listed.
You want the largest stated volume under £90 and you can accept a missing lid. The dobar larch kit is 420 litres at about £88.83, about 100 litres more than the pine for roughly £2, at 3.7 from 19. The saved texts are from France and Germany.
You need a lid in the box and a footprint nearer 66 cm than 92 cm, and you can follow a French guide. The Moutta 305 litre spruce bin is 66 × 66 × 79 cm at about £199, with hatches listed. The star line is 2.0 from 2 French texts.
The dobar Stecki pine kit is the top pick. It is a plug-in pine box of about 78 cm square, listed at 320 litres and about £86.63, with 4.5 from 44 amazon.co.uk reviews. That is the highest star line in this set. A lid is not in the bullets. The score is the star line, not a compost trial, and the saved review texts are from Italy, Spain and Germany.
Which kit is the best value?
The dobar larch kit is the best value. It is listed at 420 litres and about £88.83, about 100 litres more than the pine for roughly £2. amazon.co.uk shows 3.7 from 19 reviews. A lid is not listed, and the saved texts are from France and Germany. The extra litres do not cancel the lower star line or the slat complaints in those texts.
How much does a wood compost bin cost?
On this page the shelf runs from about £86.63 and about £88.83 for the two dobar kits, to about £132.05 for the cedar-titled kit, then about £199 and about £249 for the two Moutta spruce bins. A same-day look at the larch URL showed £88.38, so the shelf price moves. Prices are amazon.co.uk listing figures from 19 October 2026. Other wooden bins named by Gardeners' World are context only and are not these five listings.
Do these kits include a lid?
Both Moutta kits list an adjustable two-part lid and hatches on plastic rods. The dobar bullets do not list a lid, and neither do the cedar bullets, though saved United States texts describe a lid on that kit. One of two French texts on the 305 litre Moutta says the lid does not seat. The 603 litre file has no review texts, so there is no record here of whether that lid seats.
What can I put in a wooden compost bin?
Use garden waste and raw kitchen scraps. Leave out meat, fish, cooked food, dairy and pet faeces. East Riding allows raw peelings, tea, coffee and eggshells. The Royal Horticultural Society mix is 25 to 50 percent greens and 50 to 75 percent browns. Several councils say about 50:50. Cool heaps do not reliably kill weed seeds. A home bin does not replace the council food-waste caddy in England.
Does an FSC or PEFC bullet prove the certificate?
No. The pine and larch bullets say FSC and print no certificate code. The spruce bullets say PEFC and print no licence code. The cedar title is not what the material field says; that field says Wood. Defra accepts FSC and PEFC when the paperwork is real. None of these files states a preservative, a rot warranty or a service life.
Does a wooden bin replace the council food-waste collection?
No. In England, from 31 March 2026, Simpler recycling requires weekly food-waste collection, and GOV.UK says that collection stays because not all food waste suits a home bin. Do not copy that date onto Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland without a local page. A wooden kit is for garden waste and suitable raw scraps. Other bin materials are in the compost bin comparison.
When should I get help?
Get help for rats in the house, a tenancy that says to report the site, or broken boards the seller will not replace. Do not cut timber that might be treated when the pack label is missing. Test Valley wants mesh with holes no larger than about 15 mm, and Norwich says rats can squeeze through 15 mm. The retailer owes satisfactory quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9. This page did not run a compost trial.
Our verdict
Five wooden compost kits are on this page, and none was run as a compost trial. The dobar Stecki pine kit, about £86.63, is the top pick: 4.5 from 44 amazon.co.uk reviews, the highest star line here, on a 320 litre plug-in box with no lid listed. The dobar larch kit, about £88.83, is the best value: 420 litres, about 100 litres more than the pine for roughly £2, at 3.7 from 19. Saved review texts are from other countries. A lid in the box starts with the Moutta kits, from about £199, on a much smaller review record.
Best overall
dobar Stecki pine 320 L
Highest amazon.co.uk star line in the set, 4.5 from 44, on a plug-in pine kit at about £86.63.
